Description

With a complexion colored in the hues of master carved petrified oak a man is here stolid in his resolve. The angles of his clean shaven face are hard chisled and austere, the reflections of any ambient light pool in the wells of his deep gray eyes. His jet black hair is pulled back from his high brow in a myriad of intricate tightly woven braids that are intertwined with precious gems and talismans of hammered metals, it flows over his shoulders and down his broad back past the thick meticulously worked and oiled belt at his waist. Light plaited metal chains interwoven with supple cured leather hide strips crisscross the mans's chest forming a light but protective hauberk. A deepwood drum and swords are strapped in a a cross across his back fastened securely by uncured leather straps. The man's arms, thick and supple bear no adornment other than the pristine sheen of his skin.

Chapter 1

The song of the cicadas always seemed more prevalent during the time between
times. The ephemeral moments preceeding the metamorphosis from dark to light
and again from light to dark. Their individual calls melding into a pulsing
orchestration of chirps, buzzes, hums, rhythmic ticks and harmonizing drones
carried the melody of their anthem into the distant surrounding desert. The
pace and dynamics varying as if a means by which to convey to one another the
comfort found in their common existence.
Oilioll pulled the cowl of his cloak a bit lower and nestled into the crook of
the boulder and settled into the task of completing his hours of practice for
the day.  He played scales upon the horn first and then took up the harp to
rehearse arpeggios in each key. When he achieved the tasks without error he
turned to the drum at his side and keeping time with the cicadas song,
subdivided each beat first in half, then in quarters, triplets, sixteenths,
finally reaching a furious crescendo of thirty-second notes rifled through
with crisply accented sixty-fourths. All the while he focused intently on 
melding the sounds he created with those of the desert locusts. The instrument
of his voice was always saved for last as it was his favorite to use. He would
not allow himself to sing until he had advanced his skill to play the others
in some small measure.
It had taken years to memorize the songs of all of the native peoples of the
Desert of Araile, though in so doing he had commited to heart the history of
his ancestors.  He stood and set his posture so as to project his vocalization
appropriately.  He sang wailing against the coming darkness.  The songs were
of loss and destruction, the desolation that came to a wonderous civilization
surrounding a vast lake. The catastrophe magic had brought down upon the 
denizens turning the thriving center of life into the sweeping ocean of
strange crystalline red sand at his feet. He rehearsed the songs of the
Thri-Keen, of those peoples that now resided in the Oryx Steppes and of his 
own nomads of the Sands.  Each of the chants, choruses and arias carrying the
common themes of loss and rebirth. The clear meaning and feeling of each always
touched Oilioll deeply within his soul, the foulness of magic was the source 
of all ills.
As darkness fell and the cicadas grew silent and still, Oilioll turned from his
singing and whipped his cape about to fan the embers of his campfire. Far to
the northeast the blackness of the night deepened into a swirling void over
the Chasm of Eternal Night.  The young bard stood his post with earnest
determination, the first watch was his, for the first time he would stand
sentinel in solitude.  He repeated the vow he had made to Tahren, setting it
to a tune of his own making. Never again would magic destroy the lands of
Thera. Those that took up arms against it would know victory no matter the
consequences. He would lead them in song.

Chapter 2

Added Wed Feb 28 14:59:50 2024 at level 28:

Oilioll had taken to the Hut of Remembrance often of late.  Something about the
way the sounds he coaxed out of his horn and his voice reflected from the walls
off the ceiling, down to the floor and back to his ears there was unlike any
other rehearsal venue he'd found.  The clarity of the disparate tones was 
more pronounced there and due to the unique acoustics of the room, if he was 
able to measure the timing of his attacks and releases just so, he could in
certain moments, harmonize with himself.  Rapidly alternating between roots,
thirds, fourths and fifths, the notes would reverberate in the air blending 
into consonance, disonance and resolving once more.  The relative peace he
found there enabled him to come closer to mastery of his craft and with each
repetition the movements grew closer to instinctual.  His voice rising and 
falling in tone and intensity in concert with his horn genuinely and from his
soul.

In those moments, as he traversed every possible scale and each possible 
rendition of the songs he had committed to memory he found focus in the
isolation of the task. He poured over the fundamental philosophies of his Lord
the Mighty Panmorne.

Oilioll was relatively new to the ranks of the BattleRagers, and as such knew
that his voice did not carry the weight of his elders and of the veterans. He
made it his goal to inspire his cabalmates by example. By achieving mastery of
his craft and by applying the teachings of his Lord to his decisions and his
actions.  The challenge before him was formidible but so was his will to take
the opportunity in hand and to excel in the doing.  As long as his body had
breath in it, he would give his voice to the cause. No matter the cost.
