Description
Iridescent feathers adorn this arial's narrow head, and a ragged
tuft of black extends out of the back of his head like the
stuffing from a duck-filled pillow. Gold irises stare blankly
at the world on either side of a glistening-thin ebon beak,
and his graceful neck is covered with the same rainbow-hues
as his head when the light hits it just right. A broad frame
supports a muscled chest to power his wings, and a pouch dangling
from his belt has a loop of cord hanging from it.
Role
His Mercenary Interests
Added Sun Jul 22 15:54:08 2018 at level 14:
As a general rule, arials dislike the water, and Oliopterix Ragplume was no exception,
so when an unscrupulous merchant asked the rogue to haunt the docks of his hometown
and disrupt the sea trade with a few quiet disappearances, Ragplume was happy to take
his money. This, however, set the first stage toward his dislike of magic.
As he was quietly dumping cargo and the occasional body into the sea,
quietly minding his own business, a woman of some means stepped into his
face and demanded to see the manifest for the cargo he was handling. Ragplume
smiled sheepishly, then drove a dagger into her side. For most merchants, that
would have been enough, but this one uttered words in an archaic language
and the rogue was quickly overcome by a mind-splitting headache that completely
incapacitated him.
Eventually, he recovered, but Ragplume's first experience with magic was unpleasant.
His second experience with magic was with a shapechanger who called himself Hoobis,
a veteran in his craft and quite a charming salesman, too. He sold Ragplume a splendid
set of wing-armors for an unbelievable price considering their rarity, and the rogue
was elated until their magic expired with the setting of the sun and crumbled into
dust.
From these two seemingly unrelated, and to others, inconsequential events Oliopterix
Ragplume's perception of magic was irrevocably damaged, and as he traveled Thera
and learned of the terrible devastation wrought by its accidental and intentional use,
magic should be stripped from mortal hands.
Too young to enlist in the army of Battleragers, this arial volunteered to
serve on the supply train or to tend their wounded.
Upbringing
Added Mon Jul 23 15:38:55 2018 at level 15:
First, he is a thief.
With this in mind, you might accurately guess that his father was a successful
businessman or politician, and you might also guess that his mother was a loving, yet
distracted, woman who oversaw the domesticate well-being of her household.
The winds of war are fickle, though, and if one is not agile or astute, the market
for arrows and artichokes might dry up or the merchant might find that his
business has been undercut by a ruthless competitor.
So what does one do? You become more ruthless-er.
So it was that Oliopterix Ragplume found himself skirting the brighter-lit
streets as his father's fixer, trying to deal with problem clients, creditors,
and competitors. And he relished in it, the grit and grins that came from
battling against the other shipping companies, the strongarm tactics and the
political maneuvers that are part of being successful.
But Oli was not ready to settle down quite yet, to take over his father's company.
It was time to see the world, to bloody his knuckles and his beak before getting
a wife and growing fat.
Personality
Added Mon Jul 23 15:52:38 2018 at level 15:
He fancies himself the student of politics and psychology from having had
the upbringing as a merchant's son, and he will try to concoct a plan before
rushing in to stir things up. He is impish, but he is fairly loyal to
those he would name friend.
Expect Oli to try to ferret out the motivations of friends and enemies,
and where possible, use those to his own advantage. Although he will fight,
he prefers to work from the shadows, causing the plans of others to blow up
in their faces, and he will blister if he feels others are trying to manipulate
him in a similar fashion.
The war.

Dearest Mum,
A bit of news today for you. I defended the honor of a few ladies in
Voralian City today from a pair of ruffians from the bowels of the earth,
and as a reward, I have been recruited into a fine battle regiment under
the command of Ghar Bellwhether.
Now I heard you, but do not fret. I will be safe, as I have become a medic,
going around tending the wounded and mending the fortifications. Two fine soldiers
spoke on my behalf, Ssysthra and and a dwarf called something like Groutblossom,
and then Ghar showed me around their fortified village. There is even a cook
named Grime that has this delicious roast venison! Fresh, always.
Give my love to all,
Oli
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Added Fri Jul 27 21:49:11 2018 at level 17:
Father,
You would be proud of me, but I have become a
business owner for relatively little cost. You may
have noticed the public announcement from the royal
tax collector that several people were delinquent in
paying their taxes. Bazii, the royal tax collector,
hired me to recover the deed to a shop found in Akan.
I traveled to that dingy hole and spoke with Malkor,
and when he refused to cough up the deed, I applied
other persuasive techniques until he did.
Traveling back to Bazii, I offered to pay the dwarf's
back taxes in exchange for ownership. The tax collector
agreed, and for a 25000 copper (and the forfeiture of
of my collector's fee as a bribe to Bazii), I became
the owner of Malkor's shop.
I do not know how much revenue I will collect from the
general store, but if I can add a couple more properties
and disrupt some of their competitors, I believe we can
generate a steady flow of income we can reinvest into
your shipping company. A priority, of course, will be
to make sure that none of those magical flying ships
are not purchased by your competitors, but rest assured,
I will take care of that before it becomes a problem.

Holy Dog of War (enciphered and sealed)

My dear sister,
News of our father's death weighs heavily upon me,
but I cannot in good faith assume the responsibilities
of the family estate given the political stew in which
I find myself embroiled. I presently will have my position
as the Bandit King taken away, in a deal I have struck
with an ambitious shadow of the Empire, but this may
cause him to be seen as a rival by the current Shadowlord,
with whom I have also befriended, if such exists among the
Imperials. We shall see which triumphs, but I must keep my
fingers upon the pulse of these relationships lest I find
myself floating in the harbor.
Today the blood of three magi I gave to thicken the
holy Veil that the a Lord of Battle draped over his Theran bride
to protect her from the power of the divine. Importantly,
one of the dead was the Dread Lord--it is imperative that
we keep the Empire weakened and at each other's throats so
our own precious necks are safe. For this reason, when I
have seen an opportunity to sow doubt with sect membership
and between sects, I have followed with a dash of rain
and the sunshine of my support. I have done so heavily
among the Blades as well as the shadows, and even whispered
honest trifles to the Voice, Gillador, in hopes of winning
him into our confidence before delivering him a meaningful
defeat.
Entrust this knowledge to no one, and the scatterd ashes of
this letter to the sea.
My love to you and mother, and I will write again when I can.

On my doorstep (enciphered and sealed)
Added Fri Nov 16 18:02:27 2018 at level 51:
My dear sister,
Although this is inappropriate for me to pass along,
you, yours and your grandchildren are the last of my blood,
and I wish to see safe. Take what action you must after
reading this letter, but let your tongue be still and
convey these written words to the ashes when you are
done reading them.
Evidence mounts that a necromancer, long since dead, may
have found a way to come back from whatever hell to which
he was assigned to kill a devout worshipper of his god and
love. Jealousy moves him, so it is said, and it is feared to
what lengths he may go in his desire for revenge.
I have ordered my Drillmaster to begin field exercises
with our soldiers to prepare them for 'fights with a slight
surge' of Imperial necromancers to mask our plans.
A veteran field agent I have sent to recover artifacts
which may be useful in sealing this abomination up for good
in a baffling, otherworldly location right on my doorstep.
A promising dwarf I have sent to discover the physical materials
and divine instruction necessary to make this plan a reality,
and I am also actively recruiting a paladin to join the village
to provide spiritual guidance and a distinctly different
viewpoint to aid us in the impending battle.
I hope all enfolds according to plan, that I might retire
someday having gifted Thera a modicum of safety, but in the
interim, please take my grand nieces and nephews on an adventure
to Hillcrest.
My love to you, and I will write again when I can.
Oli
