Description

Though this svirfneblin appears almost entirely as a ball of interlocking armor you believe underneath it is male. He stands just a shade over 3'6", but you suspect that his armor is giving the illusion of more height than actually exists. Through the very small cracks you can see that he is pale skinned, though there appears to be some sort of oil (no doubt for his armour) spread over his skin. The armour itself is meticulously maintained, even given it's highly mismatched state. Plate melds seamlessly with stone, dragon skin, bone, leather, and other, more exotic materials.

Role

Olum and Elam, the GemHeart twins.

Added Fri Apr 15 17:52:34 2011 at level 15:
Olum was born a full twenty four hours before his younger twin Elam. From
the beginning they shared a deep twin-bond, experiencing each other's pain as
their own and being aware of each other's presence. Olum often speculated
that he no doubt coaxed Elam out, after discovering the outside world not
nearly so bad as it seemed at first.

To others, the relationship always looked different. It was often said that
Elam was making up for lost time, or that he was overcoming his initiation
timidness with great gusto. Olum knew the truth of the matter, but the fact
remained that Elam rushed ahead in nearly every area. Elam walked first,
Elam talked first, Elam even joined the Academy a full decade before his
older, and more cautious brother. While others saw Elam as a prodigy, Olum
knew the truth. That which allowed Elam to race ahead was Olum, ever
plodding behind, ready to step in and save his little brother.

Even when it was obvious that Olum had misgivings about Elam's magic, Elam
rushed ahead with his conjuration studies. It was, in fact, having to save
Elam from his first earth elemental that persuaded Olum to join the Academy
proper and focus on his martial training. Even still, Elam never learned and
plowed ahead through the conjurer ranks. In Elam's mind, they were
unstoppable, and as twin-bonded brothers, their place amognst the greatest
Seekers of Balance was assured. Olum was not nearly so convinced, but he
would have followed... if it had gone that way.

Hell or High Water. Well, Mostly Hell.

Added Fri Apr 15 17:59:45 2011 at level 15:
Instead, while Olum slept, resting his tired body after a hard day of weapon
training, Elam called forth a devil from the Inferno. What went wrong, or
perhaps horribly right, depending on your viewpoint, the world may never
know. Instead of a bearded devil, or one of the lesser abashi, Elam managed
to call forth something greater. Something much greater.

As pain ripped through the twin-bond and startled Olum awake, he already knew
it was too late. Dragged back in to the Inferno by whatever fell beast he
had conjurered, Elam was gone. Olum wept for the pain, and the loss, but
made his dutiful way to the healers, ready to comfort his brother once they
called his spirit back into in a new body. Olum only hoped that his brother
might learn his leason.

Hours later, Olum awoke upon the healer's table, nightmares of fiendish
torture echoing weakly in his mind from his link with his brother. It took
some time for Olum to figure out what had happened. The pain too great to
bear, he must have succumbed to unconciousness, but why was Elam still in
pain? The dawning horror was almost too much to bear. This devil that had
captured his brother was not going to torture and discard him, letting him
escape through death. No, this devil meant to keep him.

Olum brushed the healer's away, for he was not hurt, and they could not help.
Elam's folly had cost Olum his brother. But Olum knew his path now, where he
had always struggled to follow Elam's. Olum would travel deep into the
Inferno, though he knew not where exactly his brother was held and pull his
ass out of the (hell)fire. But Olum would not rely on magic, which had so
thoroughly betrayed his brother, but upon his martial skills. He would save
his brother, though he may not deserve it, and he would save others from
similar folly, but he would do it his way. Olum would seek out the
BattleRagers and their strength in his quest.

Seeking Daevryn and the strength of the Earth

Added Mon Apr 25 18:01:30 2011 at level 29:
Olum worked tireless with his weapons and grew in strength within the warrior
guild. He worked to show his prowess to the villagers, that they might
welcome him within and let him build a hut. Olum worked very hard at this
immediate goal of joining the village, but he did not lose sight of his
ultimate goal to rescue his brother. While he felt the straing of joining
the village would do well to test his abilities and prepare him for the road
ahead, Olum didn't think it would be enough in itself. After all, to venture
into the most dangerous place a Theran can venture will require more than the
ability to catch magi between ones axes.

To this end Olum found the teachings of Lord Daevryn to be most suitable.
Goal-driven, Olum can set intermidiate obstacles to be met and overcome to
prepare himself. Like the Earth presses upon stone until a gem of
unfathomable hardness is created, so too must Olum press himself to become
the greatest version of himself. Anything less than that, and Olum cannot
hope to conquer the circles of the Inferno. In this, Olum believe he knows
the process, but is unsure of the details by which to shape himself into that
which he must become. He believe that Daevryn can provide the guidance that
Olum needs to set himself tasks that will prepare him properly.

Building a Hut

Added Sat Apr 30 10:23:05 2011 at level 32:
Olum has completed an important trial in his life in joining the village,
building hit hut there, and becoming a full member. This was a difficult
trial, and Olum knew much of defeat at the hands of his enemies. However,
this was a strengthening experience. Olum learned how far he could extend
himself, and how far he could not. Olum learned when to fight and when to
run. Olum learned when he could not run and had to fight. Now that Olum has
found a place and learned the path of the defender, he must learn these
lessons anew with the powers of the bloody head fueling him. After all, with
his ability to cure poisons and plagues and to heal himself, Olum can extend
himself further than before.

Olum enjoys his new brothers in arms, but some seem to behave so much like
his true-brother Elam, that he wonders if they were not cut from the same
stone. They extend themselves beyond their abilities, relying on Olum to
save them. They treat his minstrations as something that takes no effort,
and deserves no praise. No doubt Olum could take some vengeance and teach
them a lesson, but it is not his personality to do so, and so he stoicly aids
them, even when, were he not there to preserve them, they would certainly
fall and perhaps learn something from their failure.

Yzekon: Olum the survivor.

Added Sat Apr 30 10:31:42 2011 at level 32:
Olum is not prepared to begin his quest to rescue his brother. Nor even to
prepare himself for said quest by venturing in to the dangerous lands that
live in Theran lore as true tests for the explorer, but when the opportunity
to see Yzekon came up, he could not pass it up. Olum saw this as an
opportunity to observe how others would lead and deal with such a task, and
it was most rewarding. Where the others who came that were not hero's of
Thera fell quickly, Olum survived. When the expidition leader fell, Olum
survived. Olum knew this was bad, but assumed (badly) that others would have
paid attention on the way in, and that they would know the way out. Olum
learned not to rely on others to keep him safe in an area such as this. The
knowledge of how and where to retreat is precious, and should be guarded by
everyone.

After the expidition leader fell, chaos ensued. None left knew where to go,
or how to get out. Olum watched in dismay as his brothers in arms fell, one
after another, until only he and Kolsad remained. For Olum, weary from the
experience beyond mortal bounds, it became a kind of morbid game. To
outsurvive each person was a victory, and Olum wanted to win. Alas, his need
to protect made him lose this game of death, for as he followed Kolsad to aid
him, he was beset on all sides by duergar and fell just moments before the
giant. Olum learned much, but what he learned most was what not to do.

Hyu and the Dragon Pipe.

Added Wed May 4 19:34:52 2011 at level 37:
The death of Hyu was quite tough for Olum. It seemed like a failure on his
part, especially since he saw the fight and passed him by, believing Hyu
could handle himself against Chioth. Olum learned a valuable lesson. Those
who are not constantly calling "Patches!" are the ones most likely to need
them. Perhaps it was pride that kept Hyu from calling for aid, but Olum
believes he should have been there to aid anyway. It is, after all, his
purpose within the village. This is a lesson he will not soon forget.

As Hyu's ghost visited the village shrine after his passing, Olum was given a
very special gift. Hyu's most prized possession. A pipe shaped like a
dragon. Olum does not know the origin of the pipe, or it's significance to
Hyu, but it is a finely crafted item. A work of great skill and meticulous
craftmanship. Olum believes that it is perhaps Hyu's master work as a smith.
Having a father who makes his living as a gemcrafter in Upper Cragstone, Olum
has a great appreciation for level of dedication and skill needed to achieve
such a masterpiece.

As Olum has not dedicated himself to a skill such as this, at first he saw it
as a failure within himself, much like Hyu's final demise. But as the morose
of Hyu's passing also faded, Olum drew inspiration from the shape of the
piece. Olum might not possess the skill to create such an item, but he could
test and forge himself in another way to prepare himself for his final task
of rescuing his brother. And so, Olum began collecting dragon lore on the
lesser dragons of Thera. To defeat them and thus strengthen himself for his
ultimate quest.

1) Two black dragonlings of Ysigrath: Defeated
2) Red dragon of the sewers of Galadon: Defeated
3) Jade dragon of the Jade Mountains: Defeated
4) Baby jade dragon of the Lost Elven Vaults:
5) Yellow dragon of the Wastes of Nonveil:
6) Black Dragon (?) of Barovia:
7) Copper Dragon of the Ugruk Foothills:
8) Midnight Dragon (and dragonlings) of Eryn Galen:
9) Onyx Dragon of the Onyx tower of Arboria:
10) Silver Dragon of the Silver Tower of Arboria:
11) Dracolich of the Mausoleum:
12) Sea Dragon of the Aryth Ocean:
13) ...?

Executive Summary/Update

Added Mon Jun 6 18:39:38 2011 at level 51:
Olum views everything, or nearly everything, he does as a defensive or
protective act in one for or another. He protects his brother's in the
village through his skills as a defender. He seeks to protect the mages he
kills from themselves and their dangerous use of magic. He is trying to
protect his twin brother by returning him from the Inferno.

Olum is goal and results driven, almost to a fault. In defending his home
(the village), he will pursue this goal of defending relentlessly. This
caused some friction with Gurzgred and is likely to continue to do so with
other characters.

Olum has completed the first task undertaken for Daevryn by slaying 17 lesser
dragons (and one ancient dragon) in memory of Hyu and the dragon pipe he gave
to Olum at his passing.

Olum's personality might come off as bland, but this on purpose, as he stands
in almost direct opposition to everything Elam was. Any vice he saw in Elam,
he seeks virtue in the opposite. As such, he doesn't drink, tries not to
speak out of turn, keeps his emotions in check and generally behaves in a
strict fashion. Even his svirfneblin heritage has been somewhat tempered by
his moving from Lower Cragstone to Hamsah Mu'Tazz.

Olum has begun exploring the Inferno and testing his gathered lore on the
place to begin mapping out where his brother might be located and how best to
rescue him. It has been slow going, but encouraged by recent expiditions
with fellow villagers to the acient dragon lairs, he is likely to begin this
in earnest.
