Description
Deep bronze, bald, and tattooed, the human you study stands just
under six feet tall. His frame is narrow and bound tightly with
wiry muscles. His face is crooked, split by a nose that has been
broken too many times. Yet a wide grin full of large white teeth
is ready to join his large, deep brown eyes to give him moments
of charisma. Tattoos cover his visible flesh, wide bars and circles
of blue-black ink running the course of his skeleton. The strong
scent of sand and sweat surrounds him, and off-white billowing
cloth wraps his armor loosely.

Desert Cries

Colic is the name given to the incessant crying of a baby that has no
discernible cause. It generally lasts three to four months, and can
be a great hardship on new parents.
Among the nomadic people of the Araile Desert, however, a babe with
colic is considered a boon. It is said to be evidence of a battle
for supremacy among two souls reborn into the same child. The
parents are proud to be assured a strong-willed child once the
colic has passed, something that is necessary to withstand the
torrid desert clime.
In the child who would come to be known as Orbis, the colic lasted
a full year. His mother had passed in child birth. His father
endured the loss of his mate and the inconsolable babe for nearly
nine months before his despair caused a fatal error during a
routine hunt.
So the child became an orphan, which is not uncommon among his
people, for whom death is a constant part of life. A boy who was
physically healthy would have been a welcome addition to any of
his mother's sister's broods.
But there was a chilling rumor that the boy was accursed. The
tribal elders spoke out against such unfounded prejudice, but the
wise women held their tongues. Ultimately, the decision was for
the women to make. They began making arrangements. He was
marked with protective runes, to hold the evil spirit within him,
and raised among the children of the tribe until he could walk
and speak. None, not even his mother's sisters, claimed him as
their own. He was unnamed.
Through the treachery of the nomadic women, a trader from Hamsah
Mu'Tazz was led to believe that the boy was his illegitimate son,
which was a possibility he could not deny. Razzaq ibn Muqtafi
had traveled the deep Desert for much of his life, and knew the
young boy was to be a burden. But Razzaq was a man of
forethought and could see that a well-trained servant that was
native to the Desert would be invaluable as the trader aged.
So Orbis was raised travelling between the great city of Hamsah
Mu'tazz, the depths of the Araile Desert, and at times beyond.
He was bright and able, yet watchful. It was this watchfulness
that caused Razzaq to begin calling the boy Orbis, the name of a
lesser sun-spirit who's sight falls where ever there is light.
Razzaq never returned to the village of Orbis' birth. He raised
Orbis as a favorite slave, not a son. Orbis benefited from the
trader's competence, observing a careful, intelligent, charismatic
man. He also watched his guards, and learned to fight from them.
Razzaq approved. Orbis benefited from wide travels, encountering
many cultures. An unseen servant, he observed, listened, and
thought much.
There was but one area of the Desert that Razzaq avoided. Orbis
longed to learn of this unseen place, but even in the raucous inns
of Hamsah Mu'Tazz where tongues flapped like the wind, the topic
was met with suspicious glares.
