Description

Taut and thick muscles ripple beneath the coal black skin of the wicked looking duergar before you. A grotesque scar on his cheek prevents him from being able to close the right side of his mouth completely, and from within the confines of his nasty maw are a set of stained teeth. A greasy black beard hangs to the center of his broad and muscular chest, and the scarred knuckles of his hands indicate that this fellow is no stranger to the violent rigors of life. His heavy hooded onyx eyes make him appear rather sleepy or disintrested, but the tenseness of his body gives one the impression that he's ready to pounce when action is needed.

Role

The Beginning part 1

Added Fri Mar 11 01:30:46 2011 at level 34:
The duergar clan gathered themselves inside the massive cavern that
served as the town square within their subterranean warren. Hundreds of
burning sconces lined the walls, but they did a poor job illuminating the
inky blackness of the Underdark, and the thick acrid smoke that they
emitted burned the lungs of even the heartiest of the duergar.

The clan crowded around three central stalagmites. From these
stalagmites hung rusty, yet well used manacles, that turned these natural
formations into crude whipping posts. Three terrified duergar were
shackled to these formations, whining and pleading for mercy from the
angry and mocking crowd.

A middle-aged warrior king with a battlescarred face, easily ascended a
rather large boulder near the pleading prisoners and raised a thick
fingered hand above his head. The restless noise of the crowd quickly
silenced. The warrior stroked his greasy black beard thoughtfully and
bellowed to his clan below, "The three wretches before you been found
guilty of desertion of the war band when we did be raidin' the
settlements of the invadin' Svirfnebli!"

The duergar populace screamed with outrage, and a few fist sized stones
flew from the anonymous crowd and struck the shackled prisoners. The
leader allowed himself a brief moment for a smile and allowed his people
to carry on for a few seconds longer before raising his hand once again
to silence and halt his mob.

"The punishment...... 200 lashes!" The crowd roared happily and danced
wildly before the three prisoners.

Within the fray of the sweaty duergar mob, stood an adolescent duergar
who neither cheered nor danced. He simply stared with intense malice at
the pitiful duergar chained to the center stalagmite. Oringus, was
absolutely mortified that his father had shown such incredible weakness
during the raid. He had always known his father was not a great warrior,
but such a lack of discipline was something that Oringus could not
stomach. Strength was all that mattered to Oringus, strength and the
power that came with it, and all of that might be taken from him if the
clan thought him to be weak like his father.

The warrior king gazed over his sea of duergar, pointed to three of his
largest and most brutal fighters, and beckoned them forward. They
eagerly arrived at the chained men and picked up the ragged leather
whips thay lay before them on the ground.

The king roared at the top of his lungs, "Punish these cowards for their
weakness! Begin!"

The recently annointed torturers raised their whips above their heads and
rained down savage blows upon the bare backs of the chained duergars.
The whips snapped through the air, and quickly turned the dark skin of
the duergar into a pulpy mess. The prisoners howled fiercely, but none
howled more fiercely or desperately than Oringus' father.

The Beginning part 2

Added Fri Mar 11 01:34:27 2011 at level 34:
Oringus, enraged by his father's weakness, stepped out of the crowd and
advanced towards the warrior whipping his father. He savagely kicked the
torturer in his ribcage and snatched the whip from him as he dropped to
his knees in pain.

A pair of the king's bodyguards charged towards Oringus, thinking that he
was trying to rescue his pitiful father.

*CRACK*

*CRACK*

The bodyguards stopped short. As soon as Oringus had disarmed the
torturer he rained down two savage blows that knocked the wind from his
father's back. The entire cavern became deathly silent.

Again Oringus whipped his father, and a chunk of flesh cartwheeled into
the air. The cavern stayed silent. Even the other two torturers stopped
their ministrations and turn to watch the young boy whip his father.

Again and again the whip snaked and cracked as Oringus continued with the
flaying of his father. Traditionally these whippings were never meant to
be fatal, the purpose was to humiliate and injure, and then to serve as a
living warning to those who might wish to defy their king in the future.

But Oringus did not believe that his father deserved such a lax
punishment, for that punishment would never lift the taint that his
father had brought upon his name. Oringus rained down blows with such
fury, that his father lost consciousness after the 37th blow. But
Oringus did not stop. Nor did he stop on the 104th blow when it was
clear that his father was no longer breathing. Oringus did not stop. He
did not stop until the 200th blow smacked wetly onto the now skinless
back of his death father.

Oringus was covered in sweat and panted heavily when he calmly took in
his surroundings. He said nothing, but quietly coiled up his whip and
placed it on the ground. He turned to the king, bowed deeply, and exited
the cavern. He knew he'd never rise to power within his clan, there was
too much bad blood associated with his name. He gathered his sparse
belongings and retreated from the warren. He would go elsewhere. He
would go to the surface world, and carve his own path in life. A path of
strength, and a path where he could leave his tainted family name behind.

The Empire

Added Wed Mar 30 00:22:28 2011 at level 48:
Oringus fled the Underdark and his duergar clan to seek a new beginning
to his life. A beginning away from his traitorous and weak father. A
beginning where no one would know of his past.

He arrived to the surface world seeking a place that would grant him an
opportunity to become powerful and at the same time allow him to display
his strength as a warrior. He joined the Empire and found a place for
himself within the sect hall of the Blades. He grew strong quickly, and
became a rising foot soldier in the wars against the enemies of the
Imperial Throne.

Oringus advanced to the rank of Imperial Blade within the Empire. He was
satisfied with his quick success, and while an Imperial Blade is a well
respected station within the Empire, Oringus still wanted more. He
wanted to be stronger, and to be known as one of the Elite Blades within
the sect hall. Oringus spoke to the War Master Zasowski about his
desires, and was told that there was a spot within the ranks awaiting him
if he filled the purse of the War Master with 100 gold coins.

Oringus was pleased that there was a station awaiting him, but was
somewhat dismayed that the only thing holding him back was a sack of
coins. Oringus felt that the strongest should be awarded the status of
Elite Blade by merit alone, but he quickly understood that even though
the coin would be going into the pocket of his War Master, it would be
better for the Blades and the Empire if he were to rise in power,
regardless of how it was done.

Unfortunately, Oringus did not have 100 gold coins. But the Shadow Lord
did. Oringus borrowed to money from the Shadow Lord on the condition
that Oringus pay back Sivyh, and promise to vote for Sivyh for Emperor*
should Oringus ever be the position to do so.

The deal was made, Oringus paid the Warmaster Zasowski 100 gold coins,
and he was promoted to the status of Elite Blade.

*Sivyh has since become Emperor.

Scourging the Sins of the Father pt 1

Added Wed Mar 30 00:23:35 2011 at level 48:
Oringus grew strong within the Empire, and was pleased with the lifestyle
that the power brought him. However, something in his past always nagged
at him, and at times gave him doubt about his own strength. He did not
want to falter and fail when faced with challenge, like his craven father
did. Oringus wanted to be tested, to prove to himself that he would not
wither up and quit when opposition came his way. Little did Oringus
know, but he would soon be tested.

It was a sweltering day in Hamsah Mutazz when Oringus awakened in the
warrior guild from a long rest. The ever present flies of the desert
city buzzed annoyingly around his face, and he swatted at them angrily.
A pounding at the door of the guild startled Oringus. He opened it to
find a beaten and bruised Imperial recruiter.

"Blade!" the recruiter panted, "the Village has stolen the Codex! You
must get it back."

Oringus nodded grimly and closed the door. Facing the village would be a
challenge, the only other imperial of note was just an Imperial citizen
from one the mage guilds, and Oringus did not trust them greatly. And
guarding the battlerager village were the assassin Axulix, and the great
beast of a barbarian know as Karkarrak. The challenge would be great,
and Oringus feared that it would be something that he might not survive,
but Oringus decided that this challenge was put forth before the gods of
Thera to prove his mettle as a warrior.

Oringus marched towards the village, and sure enough Karkarrak was there
waiting. A bloody battle ensued, and both parties were forced to
retreat, but Oringus was not able to slay the guardian giant and return
the Codex to the rightful place in the Emperor's throne.

Oringus charged in again, but this time he met his fate when the great
fire giant entwined his legs and beat him senselessly with his massive
swords. While his body was destroyed, his spirit remained strong, and he
rested for awhile before charging to the village once again.

Again he was met by Karkarrak, but this time Axulix was with him as well.
Again he was beaten senselessly, but again his spirit remained strong.

The third time Oringus traveled to the village, the assassin was gone,
but a ranger from the clan of the cloud giants joined Karkarrak in the
defense of the village. Oringus, his will forged from his recent
defeats, heavily beat upon the cloud giant Voirthot, and sent him running
to the woods. And now it was just Oringus and Karkarrak once again.

Oringus knew that he would never be able to best the barbarian on his own
terms. The giant was just too big and too strong, and Oringus would
never be able to slay him while Karkarrak awaited him from within the
crude barbarian village. So Oringus lured Karkarrak out, to battle him
away from the guardian of the village.

Scourging the Sins of the Father pt 2

Added Wed Mar 30 00:25:06 2011 at level 48:
A great battle ensued within the Ruins of Ostalagiah. Both wielded their
weapons like masters, as they grunted and battled violently. It did not
look like Oringus was gaining the upper hand, and when the great giant
entwined him once again, it appeared that Oringus would be faced with
defeat for a third time.

But Oringus' heart did not falter. He hastily threw down his trusty
halberd and swung his meaty fists at the Karkarrak's head in an attempt
to knock him senseless. He failed, and Karkarrak unsheathed his swords
to finish the duergar for the third time. However, just as the great
Karkarrak was about the hack him to pieces with his swords, Oringus took
one last deperate shot at the giant's massive head. Oringus balled his
fists and with all of his remaining strength struck at the giant.

Karkarrak fell limp to the ground, unconscious from Oringus' well timed
blow. Oringus quickly untied his feet from Karkarrak's flail and raced
to the village. The guardian giant of the village sneered angrily when
Oringus came at him with a flurry of fists and rage. But the giant was
no match for newly forged Oringus. Oringus quickly brought the giant to
his knees and returned the Codex to its rightful place in the Emperor's
throne.

Oringus sweaty and exhausted after his trial realized that he was not and
would never be his father. Battered and beaten he had soldiered on, and
his father and his father's name would never again be a burden on this
Imperial Blade.

From that day forward Oringus decided to change his surname to IronHeart,
a name to serve as a constant reminder that while his father was weak, he
was strong. And that even under the most trying of times, his heart and
courage would not break.
