Description

An elder looking human male is here, slight and unassuming in stature. His hair is long, straight, and pulled back in a simple tail to keep it out of his way. His hair has noticabely gone over to a complete silvery-gray coloring with his age. His skin is weathered but mostly free of wrinkles, though he carries these around his eyes from years of smiling and laughter. He is thin and small-bodied, though he carries himself with an aura of authority. His face is thin, with strong bones under his tanned skin, and he has a small mouth. His thin eyebrows furrow slightly over large eyes of a striking blue color. Looking into them you see a strange mix of determination and zeal burning deep within. You note that though his gaze is intense, it carries with it a sense of tiredness and exhaustion. His cloak is thrown back to free his arms, and one shoulder carries a proud tattoo, the image of a black jaguar, in inks that glow with a barely constrained holy power. The tattoo itself seems to be staring back at you with the same intensity as its baerer, occasionally flashing fang and claw as if alive.

Role

Oshui the Slave Boy

Oshui's tale is a sad one, yet it is one that should leave the reader with
hope. To say Oshui has had a hard life thus far is perhaps the greatest
understatement of the year. Oshui was born to a small fishing village far
southwest of what is now called Whistlewood Swamp. He was destined to have a
simple, happy life there. His greatest achievement would have been dancing
with the prettiest girl at the summer festival and marrying her, taking over
his father's small fishing boat and proudly trading his wares up river to
make enough coin and goods to be happy yet not weathly. This was all not
meant to be, though. Fate had another tale for Oshui to spin.

On Oshui's worst nights he can remember the fire. He was only four years old.
He can still remember the screams of his sister as she burned alive, though
he doesn't understand any of it. They lined him up beside his mother along
with all the other villagers, nude and beaten near to death. The ones that
attacked and destroyed the village were merchants of a different sort,
slavers to be exact. Their leader walked up and down the line of villagers
tallying numbers on a small notebook. He stopped at Oshui and casually asked
his age. His mother had a sense of what was going on and she lied to the man,
claiming he was seven. The merchant captain grunted once and walked on. They
were all clasped in chains and sent on their way.

Oshui was a part of the half that survived the long journey in the hold of
the slaver ship, his mother was not. He had wept loudly until he had gone
hoarse. They arrived at a mountain system, he wouldn't be able to tell you
which. He wouldn't know how much he sold for, or even the purpose of him
being put to slave labor as a hauler. He just knew that he was told to carry
rocks and put them in carts, and when he didn't do this fast enough, he was
flayed alive by a slaver's whip. Oshui would not see the sun for fifteen long
months. 

Children are meant to develop with love, with kindness. It was not the case
with Oshui, It would be nice to mention how the slaves all banded together
and raised him as their own, or how they were liberated by raiders, but these
things didn't happen. Women were a scarcity in the mines, and children such
as Oshui were used by both slavers and slaves to replace the intimate touches
of a woman.

Oshui Reborn

Freedom did come to Oshui, though. Oshui remembered being warm for the first
time since his father's last embrace in the village. He remembered his
mothers smiling face, his sisters playful teasing, and before he knew it, he
was flying. He flew through the caves, flew over the mountain, and flew
across the land. He flew over great cities, and small villages like his own.
He flew over dark places, he saw much evil. He flew over places taken over by
war. He flew over beautiful places, pristine forests. He flew over great
clouds that brought him to tears with their majesty. He was free, he was
soaring. He flew to a great light, and when he got there he knew sorrow. He
wept for the world, for his own life, for the lives of the many who suffer
daily. Suddenly he felt as if he had a decision to make. He knew he could
enter the light and know peace and happiness, but he sensed a choice, a
second chance. He looked back down towards Thera, towards the cruelty, the
sadness. He nodded towards the world below. He indicated that it is there he
belonged, he would save the innocent from the monsters. He would bring Thera
peace and happiness. He felt a sense of pride and good wash over him, and he
fell asleep to its comfort. 

Oshui would not be able to tell you any of the above happenings, he does not
remember how he escaped slavery. What he does remember, is waking up flying
around and cooing madly. He fluttered over the fountain spewing water and
nearly drowned in it after he was knocked in by the water. A firm hand pulled
him out and chuckled, asking if Oshui was new to his wings. The elderly man
became concerned immediately and took Oshui to the Voralian City
Shapeshifter's Guild. The elders there were baffled at how a child as young
as Oshui might shift form into a dove, yet they knew he had potential to be a
great shapeshifter. They cast a 'breaking' which reverted Oshui forcefully to
his boy form, and asked Oshui a slew of questions which he didn't answer.
They worked with him, though, and eventually he would say a few words to
them. They understood he had no home, and made it clear that he was always
welcome in the Voralian City shapeshifter guild. Oshui liked that just fine.

Oshui and the Jaguar Goddess

Oshui grew up. A little bit. Seventeen years old now, he's had a lot of time
to think, to reflect, and to grow. He still isn't quite sure what happened
from the time he died as a slave to waking up as a dove in the fountain of
Voralian, but he is greatful for the second chance 
and wishes to make the most of it. To that end, he began to study the ways of
combat, learning that offensive shape foci and air shape foci are one of the
deadliest combinations in that regard. Oshui doesn't remember it, but the
feeling he had when flying free as an unbound spirit stayed with his soul.
When offered the chance at choosing to major in air, he took it. Oshui began
studying the ways of combat at once, learning that there were wands in the
world that would do severe damage to foes, even if he is not in his animal
form. 

Oshui then began to stalk prey, monsters he calls them. The monsters he hunts
are typically evil, though he would not be adverse to hunting one who isn't
evil if he is committing evil actions. Oshui was laughed at at first when he
made the claim he was going hunting, but after seeing the look in Oshui's
eyes when he returned from his ventures, his guildmates knew he was a killer.


Oshui was very troubled after the first few times he slayed the monsters. He
was encouraged to go speak with Baerinika and gain her advice and wisdom. He
did so, and then learned that he was not becoming a monster, that because he
uses his morality he will always feel sad, disgusted, and disturbed after a
kill. Baerinika told him she would be his guide during his mortal life of
hunting monsters, and this put him at peace. Baerinika wears two leather
strips as her main articles of clothing, and for a 17 year old boy, this did
not put him at peace. However, after hearing she cannot read minds or dreams
he was at ease again. 

Oshui is not certain of factions or paths just yet, he is very poor with
strangers. He keeps to himself, and is quiet mostly. His time as a slave boy
being raped during social development did not do wonders for his social
ability. Oshui has plenty of time to work through this, and many other of his
shortcomings though.

Oshui the Predator

He comes back to himself slowly. His claws..no, fingers now, are covered in
blood. His muzzle tastes of iron and blood, he spits a chunk of fleshy fur
from his mouth. He shudders to himself, and looks around. A corpse rests on
the ground in front of him, ripped to shreds by a wild beast, by him. This is
the third evil monster he's found slaying these particular elves, he wishes
they would fortify their defenses. He has been a Squire for a long while and
is happy to hold the position, joining the Fortress was a good idea. He feels
that with an established network to scout for he can assist with the
purification of Thera from evil better than if he were alone. Baerinika
approved the idea, she said she was proud of him. He flushes to himself a bit
at the praise and feels a warm glow radiating from his heart. Oshui is now an
Initiate of the Jaguar, this brings tears to his eyes when he dwells on it,
he never knew how far he could come, and he can only imagine how far he can
go with the Jaguar always at his side. The Fortress itself is quiet lately,
not that he minds, he still isn't one for lengthy speeches and words. He is
growing more and more confident in his abilities, though, and looks foward to
the day when his mere presence alone drives the darkness deeper into shadows.


He looks down sadly once more at the shredded corpse before him and sighs. He
looks up into the sky, leaps into the air, transforms into a fierce Skyflash,
and soars on, seeking new prey.

Oshui, More than War?

Oshui continues to live for the war. He had grown, he has come into his forms
and he is learning the intricacies of fighting with them. His hummingbird
heart is strong and beats a thousand times a minute, his dire wolf is fierce,
a physical representation of Oshui's spirit. Oshui enjoys the freedom of
flying higher and farther than he ever has before. Yet even with all of these
things working for him, Oshui is slightly troubled. 

During a conversation with Baerinika, it came up that Oshui lived for the
war, that he spent every waking moment living and breathing war. His mangled
body lay broken on the ground more often than not, and at times he became
dispirited. To this end, Baerininka asked him who he was outside of war,
saying she already knew herself but felt it was something Oshui needed to
discover. Oshui has given her question a great deal of thought since then.
The first thing he did to find out who he was outside of war was visit the
Inn of the Eternal Star. While he did get so severely inebriated he nearly
crushed his hummingbird beak all the way back to the Fortress on every tree
in the air, he decided the bar scene was not for him. He then moved on to
speak to an Acolyte on the matter. He asked Rosaline the Acolyte to help him
find the Light inside himself and what activities he might participate in to
bring about love and happiness. She launched into a long conversation on love
and why he should love everyone, but this was not what Oshui was seeking, and
before long he began to get itchy and flew away. Oshui's main issue with
Baerinika's task is that if he is off learning to have fun, it is guaranteed
that someone, somewhere is being murdered or molested by monsters. Oshui
continues to find the answer to who non-war Oshui is.

Soaring While Standing Still

Oshui has come a long way since last we checked on him. He has been made
Maran, marked by Baerinika, and assumed an active role of leadership as
Marshall of the Fortress. Oddly enough, he believes his greatest achievement
through it all is love. There is nothing purer in the world than true love,
and this feeling is evoked every waking moment of Oshui's life when he thinks
of Baerinika. Oshui came to her ruins broken of body and spirit, hoping to
find guidance to a greater path. What he found in this place was something
far greater. Every broken part of his soul was mended, every inadequate or
unconfident thought washed away. In Baerinika he has found someone who he
truly loves that inspires him to fight and try harder. His ability in combat
has grown, yet often times he finds himself overwhelmed and unable to escape
due to lacking foresight or overestimating himself. Oshui is still attempting
to learn his own limits, unfortunately the only way to do this is to fall
short in an attempt at winning a bout of combat and dying usually. Yet Oshui
is not careless and truly feels he has much to live for, both for the
Fortress and Baerinika. 

So that is where we find ourselves. Oshui continues to strive to better
himself in combat, to hunt with Baerinika as often as possible, to lead the
Fortress to new heights, and if overwhelmed to learn to bide his time and
wait for appropriate times to strike instead of wasting his life.

Oshui, Reflections

And now many years have passed. Oshui is an old man. He is distinguished and
silvery and aged very well, but still an old man. He never had time for
strength training in his youth and has never been as strong as other humans,
but now he feels weakness coursing through his body and is disheartened by it
at times. The cold mountain air of the Fortress no longer invigorates his
body as in his youth, it strikes deeply into his bones and makes even flight
seem a task instead of a joy. He carries himself well, though, even if he
often complains of his age to others. The only time he is without struggle
from it is when he is with Baerinika, who grants him vigor and leaves him
feeling refreshed. 

They have come a long way together, Baerinika and Oshui. Their relationship
has evolved into one of mutual respect and mature love. Oshui no longer frets
about things that caused him grief with regards to loving a Goddess as it did
in his youth, replacing the frantic energy with a quiet acceptance of his own
mortality. He knows that even after his spirit has passed into the earth of
her ruins, they will still be together, and this brings him joy.

Oshui has become a legendary figure of Thera. In some circles he is famous,
in others he is infamous. Through it all there have been many enemies,
spewing acid in words and anger towards him more often than engaging him in
physical combat. Luckily Oshui is very thick skinned and his enemies have
done no worse than was done to him as a child by his captors, only this time
Oshui is able to strike back with ferocity and justice. But for all the
enemies Oshui has encountered, he will remember the friendships forged with
the most fondness. Often times, even by his allies, he is marked as being
cold, callous, and calculating. Oshui loves as fiercely as he fights, even if
he doesn't verbalize his feelings in any and all directions. 

Oshui is the most renowned killer of his years. Oshui has more blood on his
claws at this point than the rest of the Squires and Maran combined. And yet
he fears it wasn't enough. He flies over Thera dutifully and yet he finds no
prey. He knows they are hiding, waiting. He knows that when age takes him
they will come forth with a vengeance. If Oshui has any fears of the future
it is this. It is his duty as Marshall of the Fortress to prepare the Light
for the dark days ahead. 

And so Oshui takes to the skies, if a little slower and with less energy than
he once did, but with a full heart and the knowledge that he can still make a
further difference with the few years he has remaining to this world.
