Description

This spry looking svirfneblin stands at a modest height, approximately three feet tall, with a slender, compact build. His skin, a dusky shade of gray, is untouched by weather, suggesting a life spent indoors. His eyes, small and keen, dart about with sharp precision, taking in every detail of his surroundings. His hair, a tangled mass of wiry black strands, is meticulously braided and adorned with small, intricate charms and beads. He moves with a quick and nimble grace, his every movement deliberate and calculated. His attire, a hodgepodge of wizards robes and armor, is immaculately clean and well-maintained, with each garment neatly pressed and free of any blemishes or wrinkles. From his polished boots to the finely embroidered trim of his cloak, every aspect of his appearance exudes an aura of fastidiousness and attention to detail.

Role

The Three P's

Added Tue May 14 18:35:49 2024 at level 12:
As little Oultuun Outlescort entered the lunchroom of the Upper Cragstone
Elementary School, he knew The Three P's would see him through. It was always
a problem for Oultuun to manage the big, noisy room full of children. Oh,
bards and scholars might speak of planar rifts, ancient primeval gods, and the
Barons of old, but everyone knows an elementary school lunchroom is the most
chaotic of all places in the realm. Places like the lunchroom were the whole
reason things like the Three P's even existed!

A giggle rippled through the children at the sight of Oultuun. Not one of
happiness and mirth - the other kind. Oultuun tried to keep his nervousness
and hurt feelings at bay. "The Three P's," he told himself. "Stick to the
P's!"

Brave face on, he said aloud, "Step one. Find empty table." He surveyed the
lunchroom, identified one lonely table in the corner.

"Step two. Proceed to table." Amidst the snickers and sniggers of the other
children, he made his way to the table he'd identified in Step 1.

"Step three. Select chair." Oultuun inspected each chair for old gum, hair,
pee spots, or any other unwanted circumstances. He found a clean, sturdy
looking wooden chair and selected it.

"Step four. Position self in front of chair. Step five. Look behind you before
sitting." (This one had proved very important to add to his steps Oultuun
remembered bitterly. One day another child had pulled the chair away as he sat
down.) "Step six, sit."

Having completed steps seven through eleven, he took his first bite of the
cave lizard sandwich his mom had made. She'd put in his lunch box along with a
napkin perfectly folded into a right triangle. Delicious. He smiled, full of
the satisfaction of a well-executed procedure and a tasty lizard. Even the
chiding of the other children couldn't get him down. No sir! That was the
power of the Three P'S.

"Process. Protocol. Procedure," he said to himself with a nod.

Life's Work Discovered

Added Tue May 14 18:37:23 2024 at level 12:
On the day Oultuun graduated from Upper Cragstone High School very little had
changed. He still had a process for everything in his day. He still loved his
mom's cave lizard sandwiches. He still ate lunch alone at the cleanest empty
table he could find. And that was all fine with Oultuun. He didn't much care
for change.

The day after graduation, Oultuun realized change had come whether he cared
for it or not. For when he awoke, there was no school to go to, so he couldn't
execute his "Prepare for School Procedure." It was also not the weekend, and
thus he could not execute his "Weekend at Home Procedure" either. (Step one of
that one was always to sleep an additional 10 minutes. He could splurge when
he wanted to.) And as Oultuun went through the day he found more and more
circumstances for which he didn't have a procedure, process, or protocol.

The hardest part was when lunchtime came. It was a weekday. Lunch should be at
school with a cave lizard sandwich and a napkin folded to right angle. His mom
found him at the kitchen table at precisely twelve noon staring at his empty
lunchbox.

"Oh darling," she asked him, "are you alright?"

"You didn't put a cave lizard sandwich in my lunchbox because it's not a
school day, even though it's a Monday."

"No 'P' for that, eh?" his mother asked.

"Confirmed," Oultuun replied sadly.

There was a long silence. Oultuun's mother had been dreading this day. She
knew how difficult it would be on her special son. There was no preparing him
for it though. Oultuun had always had his own (very specific) ways of dealing
with things, and if you tried to get him to deviate it really wasn't pretty.
So, she'd been waiting for the right moment to address his future. She guessed
this was it. Finally she asked, "Have you given any thought to what you're
going to do now that you've graduated?"

"There is no post-graduation procedure!" Oultuun shot back, the pain and
anxiety he felt was evident in his tone.

"Well," his mother said, "Perhaps step one to the post-graduation procedure is
to find a post-graduation procedure."

Oultuun, whose eyes were still on his empty lunchbox, cocked his head
thoughtfully to the side. His mom always had a way of sorting things out. And
all at once, Oultuun knew what his life's work would be:

Find the procedure for making procedures!

"Mom, I'm going to need a cave lizard sandwich," he said. "There's work to be
done!"

Mom.

Added Tue May 14 18:38:39 2024 at level 12:
Several years on, Oultuun had come to be regarded as something of a scholar.
It was unusual for a svirfnebli, as was his choice to join the transmuter's
guild, but both fit his ambition of find the Procedure for Making Procedures
perfectly. Every day he rose at precisely six in the morning, executed his
Morning Tea procedure, then got to work until noon, at which point he joined
his mother in the kitchen for a cave lizard sandwich.

He kept a notebook in which he documented every procedure he could find. Not
just his own, but the procedures of others as well. Some they didn't even know
they had. For example, Olin had an entire bar-cleaning and glass-washing
procedure down pat. He'd just never given it a name! Now Oultuun made sure the
procedure had a name, Olin's Bar Wipe Down and Glass Polish Procedure, and it
was precisely documented in Oultuun's notebook. As it should be.

One day, notebook in hand, at precisely twelve noon, Oultuun sat down at the
kitchen table for his sandwich and scheduled twenty-seven minutes of chit chat
with mom. It was always the highlight of his day. She was the only thing he
loved more than the Three P's.

"How's the work coming?" she asked him.

"Very well, I think! I have developed eleven procedures for capturing and
documenting a procedure now."

"Fascinating!"

"Confirmed," Oultuun said and executed the Cave Lizard Sandwich Consumption
Procedure, step one. "I've been thinking about turning it all into a book."

Oultuun's mom perked her ears with interest. This was as close as her son had
ever come to mentioning some kind of gainful employment. "That sounds like a
fine idea," she said, "I think that's just what you should do." She smiled.
Oultuun was a special boy, and that had made his life difficult. But he was
going to be okay. She could see that.

Oultuun smiled back. Social situations were always difficult protocols to
manage, and sometimes he had a hard time understanding what people meant. But
not with his mom. He always knew what she was thinking, and he was very happy
to see that she was proud of him. He executed the final step of his Cave
Lizard Sandwich Consumption Procedure. Tasty as ever.

He reached for his notebook, and his mom reached to clean up his plate. As she
did, her eyes widened with sudden shock and pain. She dropped the plate. It
shattered. She suddenly clutched her chest and let out an unnatural gasp. She
fell to her knees, then onto her stomach, motionless. Oultuun screamed.

"MOM?!"

Into the Big World of Thera

Added Tue May 14 18:39:51 2024 at level 12:
After the funeral, Oultuun discovered that the Three P's weren't much help
when it came to grief. The only protocol for the bereaved was time. The
process had only one step: wait. Wait for your pain to lessen. Wait to be used
to the absence of the person you loved. Wait to be okay with being alone, with
having the only person who ever understood you absent from your life forever.
Wait. It was a terrible procedure.

Oultuun thought that leaving home might assuage some of his hurt. Every time
he looked at the kitchen table where he and mom shared so many meals and
talks, he felt like a cavefisher had reached into his chest and clawed his
heart to pulp. He knew he would never execute The Cave Lizard Sandwich
Consumption Procedure again. Nobody could ever make them as good as his mom.

After a time, a broken-hearted Oultuun had an idea. While his mother could
never be replaced, the Witch Ishuli was known to be a patron of scholars and
authors. Perhaps he could chat with her about his book once in a while, and
she might even catalog it into her Eternal Library. It was something to
distract him, anyhow.

He also reasoned that he should find a place to live where he'd be up close
with the Three P's. The Spire of the Blood Tribunal seemed like a good place
for that. It was all a poor substitute for mom, but it was a way forward from
the heartache he felt. So, he executed his Packing Procedure, slung his
knapsack over his shoulder, and headed out of Upper Cragstone and into the
great world of Thera.
