Description

This man is short yet by no means scrawny. His arms and legs look like they decided to grow outward instead of upward and compliment a beefy chest with their girth. His skin is a stark white, making it appear as though he were covered in frost, save the shining sheen. He has a beard of medium length and scraggly, that is a color somewhere between black and gray, as if black were the real color but it were flecked with dust. Above the beard his lips are thin and generally drawn taught underneath a large and blocky nose. His eyes are slate gray, hard and marked with the lines of hard labor. He wears no hair on his head, which calls attention to an ugly scar that runs like a stripe over the left side of his skull. His clothes are actually an assortment of thick armors that cover most of his body. He wears few weapons but seems to be constantly flexing his thick, meaty paws, as if they themselves might be weapons.

Role

The Old Dwarf

Added Mon Nov 14 20:40:51 2016 at level 20:
Oxias sat on a rock and took a deep breath. He had just made an exhausting and dangerous journey out
of the underdark and needed a place to rest. The sun, a marvel to him he had only heard about until
now, would have to wait until tomorrow for more admiring as it was beginning its decent under the
horizon and night was about to set in. He had just taken store of his dwindling rations and was trying to
form a small fire when an uncomfortable feeling washed over him, as if someone was watching him.
Cautiously, Oxias looked up from where he knelt and was shocked to see an old graying dwarf sitting
across from him on a rock and staring right at him.

-Jes come from the underdark, have ye?- the old dwarf asked casually. Oxias nodded at him, uneasy and
a bit dumbfounded the dwarf was able to get right up on him like that. Years growing up in the
underdark tunnels had made him careful, and while new to the surface, he had searched the nearby
area before settling down and found it empty.

-Bah! You undersiders ain fer knowin how to build a good fire up here on th surface! Let me help yer
with that- the old dwarf pronounced as he knelt down beside the fire. Before Oxias could even respond
the old dwarf reached into the pit and with a few quick motions had the wood sparking so fast Oxias
could hardly tell what had been done. Nodding with satisfaction the dwarf jumped up and produced a
satchel from, well, somewhere and pulled some food out of it and began preparing it for the fire all the
while chatting about how every dwarf knows how to make a good fire as it was in their blood just as the
smithing trade was.

Before long Oxias found himself in conversation with the strange dwarf, his nerves settled and himself
oddly at ease as they watched the food cook over the fire. -So, whyd you come up? What be causing
you ta leave th underside? You be lookin like youve the hands o a craftsman! Surely them ain run
outta work down there. the old dwarf inquired of Oxias.

Under normal circumstances, especially of late, Oxias would be very guarded to answer such a personal
question to a stranger, but, there was something reassuring about the old dwarf that Oxias instinctively
liked and made him comfortable enough to get past any inhibitions. -Well, I be a stoneworker from
down near lower Cragstone. I be a Diamondjaw, finest stoneworkers there be down there! Oxias
Diamondjaw be me full name, but, ye can call me Oxy. All me friends do. An, well, this is me tale- And
with that Oxias told his story.

Oxias's Story

Added Mon Nov 14 20:44:15 2016 at level 20:
Oxias started at the beginning, explaining to the old dwarf about how he worked on a crew as a tunneler
in the under led by his older brother, Olaf. Their family going back for generations were some of the
finest stonecutters in the underdark. They, like many svirfnebli, had an affinity with the earth. He told
him how he had a relationship with the stone. He would feel it, and smell it and listen to it and the stone
would tell him its secrets. Oxias could tell where the stone was strongest and weakest. He could tell
where the stone was hollow or would change from one type of rock to another. He was so good at it he
would often breaks rocks with his fists, amazing people and making it look like he had hands made of
iron. It was a skill passed down through his family, many using it for all sorts of different trades, but his
brother had found a use for it in creating tunnels and he as a young svirf had just begun working for his
brother when the councilman from Cragstone that oversaw all the exterior construction operations died
suddenly.

The dead councilman was replaced by a no-nonsense council woman, named Doritea. She was very
ambitious in the tunnel system she intended to create and began demanding near impossible
workloads. Not long after that, cave-ins started happening in the tunnel system regularly. Because of
that, Doritea surprised them all by publicly denouncing the quality of the tunnelers work, calling it
ineffective and outdated. There was a better way she claimed. She proposed giving all the tunneling
contracts to the earth invokers, saying their magic has proven to be more efficient and less dangerous.
As it were currently, invokers did assist on some crews but the bulk of the work was done by laborers.
The tunnel crew leaders became upset and suspicious over this, because they knew that Doriteas family
had close tied to the invokers guild in Cragstone and so to settle the matter a meeting was called before
King and council to determine who would get the tunneling duties going forward.

Olaf left the worksite and went to attend the meeting. There, he watched as before the council Doritea
gave a very convincing speech pointing to all the cave-ins that had been happening recently and the
deaths that accompanied them. She gave evidence that, while flimsy and circumstantial, seemed to
prove that all this was a result of the current mining practices and went to further show that in the areas
the invokers did help the work had been more successful and less accident prone. Convinced by her
arguments, the council decided to turn all the contracts over to the invokers.

Oxias's Story II

Added Mon Nov 14 20:47:56 2016 at level 20:
Upset over the whole situation, Olaf decided to visit Doritea to see if he couldnt personally persuade
her to change her mind or at least make some concession to keep him and his crew working. Upon
arriving at her chambers he found that she was not alone and overheard a conversation he knew he was
not supposed to hear. Doritea was being thanked by several people and there was mention that they
hope her payment was satisfactory and something else about the drow who had assisted in the cave-ins.
Olaf was stunned by what he heard. Doritea had been paid by someone, presumably the invokers guild,
to cause the cave-ins and get them the contracts! With drow help nonetheless! This was high treason.
And all over what? Furthering the agenda of magic and her own wealth and power?

Olaf tried to leave before he was noticed, but, it was too late. Doritea and three men he recognized from
the invokers guild came walking out of the chamber before he could leave. Pretending that he just
arrived and hadnt heard anything Olaf nervously pleaded his case to Doritea as if nothing were amiss.
To his surprise she granted his request that his crew, and his crew alone, could stay at work but only if
he returned to work immediately lest they fall behind schedule.

Olaf returned to the work site completely flabbergasted and incensed about what he had witnessed. He
told the whole story to Oxias, and after some deliberation he decided the right and only thing to do was
to bring this to the king instead of remaining the sole tunneling crew at work. He decided they would
leave first thing in the morning.

That night Oxias got up to relieve himself away from the work camp and while he was away he heard a
huge rumble. In a panic, Oxias ran back to the camp site only to find that it had been caved-in. Hot with
rage, Oxias left immediately for the city. He knew what had happened. Doritea knew that Olaf had
overheard her, that was why she granted his request to keep working. It was so she could get him away
from the city and eliminate them all. Only he survived and that was something she didnt plan on. Oxias
would go straight to the king and tell him everything and she would be finished. Unfortunately, for
Oxias, things didnt go as planned.

Somehow word of Oxiass survival reached Doritea as soon as he entered the city and before he could
get to the kings chambers he found himself being placed under arrest and thrown into a cell. Outraged,
he screamed and yelled at the guards and pled his story but none would listen. He sat in the cell for
several days before being brought to stand trial before the court. By then, Doritea had been able to
build up charges of gross negligence against him for the cave-in that killed his brother and had everyone
believing her. She even went so far as to suggest he might more sinisterly have been behind all the cave-
ins.

The Rest of the Story

Added Mon Nov 14 20:50:02 2016 at level 20:
Oxias tried to give his side, the truthful side, of the story to the king and council, but, Doriteas work had
already been done and done very convincingly. No one believed him since he couldnt offer any proof to
support it and she denounced his story as a shameful attempt to cover up for his misdeeds. She even
went so far as to call for his execution.

Fortunately for Oxias, the King did not think him capable of purposely causing the cave-ins and showed
him some mercy. Instead of executing him, he merely banished him from Lower Cragstone. The king
ordered the guards to take him immediately outside of the city and release him into the underdark with
a weeks worth of supplies. Once there, Oxias ran as fast as he could away from Cragstone, hoping to find
the surface before he could be the next casualty of one of Doriteas accidents.

Oxias completed the story by telling the old dwarf of his hatred for Doritea and his hatred for the magic
cause that she promoted. He loved his brother dearly, as they were so close, and he was gone all
because of her scheming for magic and power. His trust in people had truly been shaken. From then on,
his trust would not be easily given and anyone betraying that trust would feel the full weight of his
grudge and ire.

-Thats some story, lad.- The dwarf said nodding his approval as the fire began to burn down to cinders.
It was getting late and Oxias turned to his pack to get his bed roll out.

-An by Ysaloeryes good eye, I be tellin you if yer lookin for a place ye should seek out the Battlerager
Village. It be a right place fer one such as yerself. One full o the hatred such as ye. One with courage to
stand up fer yer beliefs. Seek it out, lad. Aye, seek it out.- The old dwarf said from behind Oxias back.
Intrigued by the words, Oxias turned around to ask more about this Village only to find the dwarf was
gone.

Seeker and Battlerager

Added Sat Nov 26 14:27:36 2016 at level 31:
Oxias listened to the words of the mysterious dwarf and joined the Battlerager Village in their war
against magic. He also recalled the dwarf mentioning Ysaloerye, something about her good eye. Upon
joining the Village Oxias learned who Ysaloerye was and about her stonemasons. With his trade history
in tunneling and affinity to the stone, Oxias felt it important that he seek her out. He journeyed to her
Shrine in Akan and spoke with her priestess. The priestess gave Oxias a task to complete which he has
spent many hours contemplating. He feels that he knows how to complete the task and will bring his
results back to the priestess soon with the hopes it will be satisfactory and lead to his acceptance as an
apprentice stone mason.

Not long after joining the Village Oxias found himself in a long and tense battle with an imperial
necromancer. He managed to separate the necromancer from its zombies in the Galadon graveyard and
with the caretakers keys in hand, stood watch over the foul creatures awaiting their masters return.
While on his vigil he was attacked from the shadows by a Tribunal thief named Sevina. She stole the
caretakers keys from him and allowed the necromancer to rejoin his army and summon Oxias behind
closed doors where he was afflicted with all sorts of dark maladies and defeated.

Angry that the thief Sevina would so blatantly aid scummy necromancer, Oxias questioned her about it.
Hed never done anything to that thief before and was stunned to find her answer was that she had
asked Oxias to travel with him once and he politely turned her down. Since he did not aid her on that
day she felt that as reason enough to aid the necromancer in killing him. Oxias felt outraged at the thief
and her callous and trite reason to assist a necromancer of all people. He was so enraged at her but
knew that he had to keep it in check. He was afterall, a berserker of the Battleragers now and it would
be distracting to his purpose if he were to spend his time plotting his vengeance against her. Even so
knowing he could not move against Sevina, he would never forget what she did to him and her
pathetically lame reason for doing it. He would take his scorn for her to his grave.

Apprenticeship and the Rites

Added Fri Dec 16 15:00:14 2016 at level 51:
Oxias has apprenticed as a stonemason to Ysaloerye. He was tasked with creating a work of stone and so
he decided that with all that is happening in Thera with the Horn of Fate, that he would create a mural
that represented these events, as well as pieces of himself. He references the horn and the crumbling
Nexus Island, as well as the rise of the new mage tower and finally a memorial for his brother and the
three ultimate hates of his life to date.

Oxias also competed in the Rites of War for the leadership of the Village. It was there he met his
Paragon for the first time and was impressed by her unique style of cursing, so he decided to imitate her
as a way of honoring her. He was still quite young when he competed but was very pleased with how he
performed, only having been defeated by the might Drillmistress. For his performance he was called to
the test of Wits, something he would probably admit to being ill-prepared for. He up until that point had
never put much thought into how he would lead the Village if given the chance and so he winged it, and
he feels like it showed. That being said, he never felt like he had a chance to win Commander to begin
with. He figured Wabailla was a shoo-in for Commander, especially after she dominated all rounds of
combat.

The real disappointment for Oxias came when Wabailla said she would name Rettia over him as
Drillmaster should she be selected as Commander. He had only met Rettia once up until that point and
didnt know anything about her but figured that his accomplishment in the Rites would have been
enough to earn him that position. Rettia and Wabailla must have much more history together than Oxias
realized. The real surprise came when Rettia was chosen over Wabailla. He felt some sympathy for
Wabailla because he knew that she had to been feeling the greatest disappointment of all.

The one thing Oxias came away from the Rites knowing is that if he ever got a second chance to
compete in them he would be much more prepared for the Test of Wits.

A New Work

Added Sun Dec 25 14:25:54 2016 at level 51:
Oxias presented his design to Ysaloerye and through some questioning she showed him that the piece was
lacking. It was not inspirational. It was a mural just on himself and what was happening around him. It
didnt even really incorporate anything about the faith into it. Oxias left the cavern resolved to start over
and redesign his work.

He did not know how to turn his life history into something inspiring so he opted instead to do something
instructive for those seeking the faith. He chose to create a statue with three figures, each representing one
of the three aspects of the faith: earth, combat and rage. He made little reference to himself in the earth
and combat figures but decided to incorporate some hints into his past and motivations into the third
statue of rage. Despite him being more closely aligned with the earth, he chose this one as he felt it was
the one best suited to visualize a part of himself.

The Greatest of Days

Added Wed Dec 28 17:34:23 2016 at level 51:
Memorable days are often few in a life and them taken together can often summarize that life as if it were
the synopsis of a book. Oxias has had a few memorable days in his life. The day he met the dwarf, the day
he got his first wizard kill, the day his brother died and the day he became apprenticed as a mason. Oxias
recently had another such day, and while at the time the day was stressful and even frightening, it wound
up being one of the most memorable days of his life.

It was the day he defeated the fearsome Scarabite mummy, Undaraxyl, and the wretched Sevina. Twice.

Once again Sevina has shown her true colors by throwing her hat in the ring with a necromancer and once
again it caught Oxias by surprise. Only this time he prevailed, defeating both in combat. Now that sounds
pretty glorious, but, it does test ones mettle to fight a mummy in a graveyard and even more so to come
out on top. But what was most trying of all was what came after the battle.

Having defeated the pair in the Oryxx Steppes, Oxias found himself exhausted, sick with disease, and
unable to move. He rested there for nearly a day and still hadnt recovered enough strength to go home.
This was when he realized that the pair were coming back and he wouldnt be recovered in time to leave.

As Oxias knew, they summoned him back to the graveyard deep within the Steppes and flinging himself
into a bloodthirsty rage, Oxias was able to defeat the pair for the second time! And in the bloody rage he
found the strength to walk home but the mummy had different plans. It began summoning creatures to
oppose Oxias and prevent him from making it out alive. It was only by sheer force of will and a little bit
of luck that Oxias actually did make it back to the Battlerager Village. Once there he fell out of his rage,
near death, and slept an entire day. He then went and got drunk in celebration. Rare are such victories
over such powerful foes.

The elation of the wondrous victory was tempered soon after when he learned that he had once again been
passed over for Village leadership. He had a feeling things would occur this way and told himself he was
OK with it. If he could not be leader he would set his sights on another goal and try to earn the reputation
of MageSlayer. Two mummy skulls should certainly help there.

Mageslayer

Added Tue Jan 31 09:09:10 2017 at level 51:
Life certainly has its ways of coming full circle. For Oxias, the disappointments of being passed over for
leadership within the Village had been long forgotten. He found enjoyment on the work to attain his new
goal of becoming a Mageslayer. He and his good friend Grembolin even had a contest going of sorts until
Grem discovered that he wasnt actually winning the contest like he previously thought. It still mattered
little as the contest was all in good fun and a friendly test between good friends.

As Oxias progressed and he felt he was nearing the point to which he might be considered worthy of that
title, the Commander Rettia decided to step down, opening up a whole mess of complexities for Oxias
that he hadnt wanted to deal with at the time. He wanted to accomplish his goal of achieving Mageslayer,
but, what if the Rites were held before he could do that?

He had accomplished so much since the previous Rites that it would hard for him to not compete for the
position and not be considered seriously. He had earned reputations, some serious and some light-hearted.
He was known as the Butcher of the Battlefield, a fearsome reputation to be sure. He also seemed to have
attracted the attention of the divine when a talking doll appeared in his possession in the likeness of
Thror. Could this really be the subtle influence of Thror, thought to be long missing from the pantheon?

Fortunately for Oxias, he did achieve his goal and was recognized as a Mageslayer. Lord Jormyr came
down and awarded him with a belt strung with the stinking skulls of the wizards he had slain. Certainly,
one of the proudest moments in his life. Now he could turn his attention to competing for leadership
without any hesitation born out of the thought of abandoning a long sought after goal.

Oxias has also been working diligently at perfecting his Masonry for the Biddy. He refined his piece of
work down to the point where he is hoping to be worthy of learning the secrets of shaping stone with his
mind and setting it for all time within her cavern.

Mason, Commander and more

Added Fri Apr 14 10:54:35 2017 at level 51:
It seems like a century ago that Oxias achieved his goal of becoming Mageslayer. Actually, that might be
because it was. Many important things have transpired for Oxias since then. Sometime after Rettia
stepped down Oxias was named Commander of the Village. It was surprising to him that he was named in
lieu of the Rites, but, it shouldnt have been too much so as Izqi had hinted at a Commander being named
without a Rites in his last meeting with her. That was so long ago. He missed Izqi and hoped she was well
existing beyond the cares of mortality.

Oxias also became a full Mason of the Paragon. His statue of the Three Masons was finished to the
Biddys satisfaction and now stands proudly displayed in her cavern for any who wish to learn about the
faith to see. And that really was what the statue is supposed to be. A teaching tool for aspiring masons.
The Biddy hinted at more learning to come and it was not until recently that Trkroo has decided to teach
him about the smithing side of the faith. Despite his age advancing, Oxias is excited to learn more of what
Ysaloeryes Inn has to offer.

Finally, Oxiass suspicions about the red-haired dwarf doll were confirmed. It was actually Thror and in
perfect likeness of him. Thror revealed himself to the Village and honored Oxias and the Drillmaster with
some good old-fashioned sparring.

Between the new step in the faith and the revealing of Thror, Oxias hopes for excitement in the days
ahead, for his age grows and body wanes, and they could be his last.
