Description

Standing at about five feet six inches, this diminutive male moves with the deceptive ease of his drow ancestry. His clothing is scant and selected for ease of movement, and his slender fingers occasionally caress a thin blade he has strapped to his thigh. His hair is cropped short, white shocks standing flat like bristles of brush, his eyes seem to be made of amber, and around those eyes and his thin lips are a hint of laugh lines, although there is little humor in his gaze. His collar is open, revealing a lithe neck with a few minor scars and an adamantite chain bearing, of all things, a small mithril pendant supported by blisters and lesions such as are common when mithril and drow flesh meet. As you examine him, you also notice

Looking over at his sister, he let the feeling of hate wash through him
and away like blood borne away by a subterranean stream. She was a 
conjurer, and he was a male. Her place was secure in the realm, and
his place was securely below hers, and that just wouldn't do.

He pushed the emotion toward the cold fire as the weapon master had
taught. If his face betrayed his feelings, a demon would wake him in
the night, and he would cease to draw breath. Better it would be to
set the breakfast table and slip away quietly.

She settled into her chair, her back regally straight and her white hair
flowing in long luscious curves. Confident, poised, her mother's favorite.
His sister showed great promise as a conjurer, and she would slide into
power as effortlessly as this knife into the hollow below her long slender 
neck.

He was surprised when he realized what he had done. Her eyes were
vacant, and there was surprisingly little blood as the angle of his
stab had let most of it fill her lungs. A spatter of crimson from a lone 
gasp covered the table, but it was a clean kill that would mean his
death if he stayed in the city.

He would travel light, move quickly, and seek out those who also
had betrayed their magic-using mistresses and masters.

My head throbbed and my eyes ached from the vicious abundance of light in the room. 
I closed my eyes, and I strained to  hear who else might be in the room. A shuffling noise,
hard leather against a dirt floor, a rustle of fabric. There was this scent, too, a musky
odor, the pungent sweat of a male laden with the smell of old age. I slowly slipped my
hand down my side, feeling for my knife.

''A conjie, fargin 'ell, ain neh likely bein done that to 'im, as me wipin yer arse wi' me
beard, Drillmaster.'' 

''This is what Tahren reported,''  a silken voice responded. ''A mage's blood has sanctified
his soul.''

''Well it wer'n neh conjie that bit its beak inta 'im. An the size of tha 'ole in 'is shoulda an
the feva o tha poison in that holy blood o 'is speaks o the munsters o the Great Dark.''

''He is one of ours now, Master Rihald. Patch him up properly, and send him to me when
he is fit for duty.''  The sounds of the room swirled away into fever dreams of my
family chasing after me through the underdark.

Earning one's keep

I woke again amid a long monologue of half-hearted dwarven invective, cursing the 
airs of wood-elves and foolhardiness of drow who fight cavefishers without proper 
triage. Despite the barrage, it was clear that that he took satisfaction from his work.

''Yer bein a dumb bastid with the sense o lint from a troll's navel, you is, fightin a
fisha. Yer eyes shoulda seen 'im, an it ain no sense ter what yer done.'' 

He prodded my shoulder, and I gave an involuntary groan. ''Yer thinkin I kint tell
when a man is tryin ta fool me by takin on the fake sleep? I ain yer wet-nurse ya 
tea-drinkin nancy! Up wit yer an feed yerself, an then we see yer ter be earnin yer
keep.''

I found myself hoisted into a seated position and wooden bowl thrust into my hand.
''Ya kin starf or ya can eat wit yer eyes closed, but ya kin belief I wol beat yer senseless
before I wol be feedin ya agin.''

I had no tableware, but the smell of the gruel kindled a hunger inexplicable to my
upbringing. Like a rothe-herder I dipped my fingers into the bowl and began
shoveling the paste into my mouth. I was ravenous.

''Yer legs liable ta be wobbly, as ya were asleep for three days an rollin in the feva,
but we is goin' ta have a swell o blokes in here soon bleedin ta all get out, an
we is goin ta need that pallet ya bin hoggin all week.'' He tossed something that
landed lightly on my shoulder, and when I touched it I felt a sheer piece of
cloth. ''Peel tha there bandich apar' an drape it overt yer eyes like a weddin veil.
That should help yer adjust some, an when we get our firs' customers from today's
warrin ya kin help by movin cots an' washin wounds.''

I wiped my hands on my trousers and took the gauze and wound it loosely
over my eyes. Cautiously I opened them, and the stabbing light caused me
to curse in my native tongue. ''How do you stand it, dwarf?''

''Quit yer bitchin. We got boys comin in wit real pain, an' stories o glory 
they will tell ta the tavern wenches an they ta their bastids long from now.''

And even as he spoke, men were being carried in, and the smells of blood
and burnt flesh filled my nostrils, and the lamentations of the wounded
filled my ears. Even with my limited knowledge, the dwarf found things for
me to do between applying poultices to poisoned flesh, setting bones, and
dressing wounds. His work was an art, and I admired his mastery over life
and death.

The angel and the devil

A surprising battle has recently erupted over Ozriwddyr's future.
On the one hand, the current emperor, Merf, has repeatedly offered Ozriwddyr
the Warmaster spot if he will defect to the Empire. As counterpoint, an acolyte
from the great white fortress in the Redhorn Mountains has repeatedly engaged the drow
in conversations designed to persuade him to change his ways.

Power, command, and a chance to become emperor and through that position destroy the Black Sect
is a bit enticing, but Deaer's efforts to teach Ozriwddyr strike the drow as more genuine, even
if they are misguided.

Ozriwddyr sees Deaer's offer as a test, a true challenge, and he has resolved to reform inasmuch
as it will not lead him to betray the pledge he made to Tahren and those who follow it with him.
