Description
You gaze upon an ebon-skinned figure dressed unambiguously in the apparels of
a rogue, a brigand and a pirate. Cocked at a jaunty angle on his head is a
three pointed hat, which shades his glinting black eyes from most who would
dare to catch his gaze. Knowingly or not, he clicks his dirty, yellowing
teeth on occasion as if to mark some petty annoyance.
Perched on his shoulder there sits perhaps the most evil looking parrot you
have ever seen. Beautifully decorated with red and green plumage, there is
something very unsettling about its eyes - as if they speak witness of some
horrible carnage that should never be recounted to mortal ears.
Though it is hard to believe there is much intelligence in the creature, you
can almost feel the mockery in its gaze as it beadily observes your
attentions towards its master.

Fuming with the loss of his ship, Padraigs sense of rage was like a canker,
eating away at his heart. The thieves and assassins that infested Theras
cities were so alike the thieves who had stolen his ship that sometimes he
would see the faces of those same men around him. Filthy tieven fockers, he
would mutter under his breath, whilst sharpening his daggers.
One day he caught one running on foot by some other pursuers. A quick look
about him was enough to be sure the eye of the law was off him for a moment.
It was just enough to step in front of his prey and sink his dagger into the
hapless assassins heart. He relished the look of pure surprise on his
victims face as the life ebbed from his crumpling body.
Aint gonnae be doin no more sneakin around now, are we, he said, with a
broad grin writ large upon his face.
It was to be the first taste of a thirst that was hard to slake.
Of Mindflayers and New Beginnings

Padraig had only twice before heard the name of the Mindflayers tales both
told by men so drunk they could hardly hold onto the bar. Some nonsense about
a cult of warrior-mages devoted to using mind-control. He had barely taken
any notice when he had heard the blatherings in the first instance, filing
them mentally where one might place boogymen or other such tales made up to
scare children. The irony was not lost on him.
After Padraig had finished screaming his guts out and hammering his fists on
the wet sand. After he had got his puff back after the exhausting swim,
Padraig gathered himself on the shores of the windswept beach where he had
swum for miles and responded to the croak of this parrot with an equally
desultory grunt:
- 'I guess it's jus' you an me, burd.'

-What're ye doin on me ship, ye frecken tight suited pansy? growled Padraig,
dagger instantly in hand as he walked towards the man, the red mists ready to
descend.
-I wouldn't do that if I were you. called a mocking voice from the poop.
Hovering into view, a humanoid figure garbed in the finest vestments Padraig
had ever seen slowly floated towards him, his beautiful, diaphanous robes
shimmering in the light and moving of their own accord, independent of the
wind's command. His eyes were green and glowed with a hidden pulsating force
of power that seemed fit to pour forth at any moment he chose.
Padraig spat an oath at the figure and cocked his hand back for the throw of
the dagger which was going to land squarely between the eyes of the figure in
black. It was only the feather-light touch of Malfoy's rapier resting lightly
on his jugular vein that gave him cause to reconsider.
-Traitorous dog! he seethed, turning a colour of red seldom seen outside of
slaughterhouses.
-This is set up, ain't it?
-Oh no... I wouldn't be so hard on him... came that same languorous voice.
-You see, you and I are very much alike. We are, to put it simply, both
thieves. But while you steal men's cargos, I seek a rather more valuable
prize their souls.
-You wha?.... came Padraig, in a rather weaker tone than he had anticipated.
-Yes, my dark dwarven catch... You and your ship are quite a prize and you
you are I think the jewel in the crown. I have long sought for one as
stubborn and unsuggestible as you, and I think I have finally done it. Now
maybe my master will accept that I am ready to take my place amongst the
rightful ranks of my peers.
Raising forth a bony finger and pointing at Padraig, the exquisitely garbed
figure uttered a stream of whispers which flowered from his lips like honeyed
perfume through the air, provoking sighs of ecstasy from the rest of the
bystanders, and which held Padraig rooted to the spot.
He looked at the figure and felt all of his malice and antagonism fall away.
Instead of a strange foe aboard his ship, he saw his friend. Such love the
crude pirate had never felt for anyone before.
He was drinking in a tavern, running round the bar playing stamp-the-weasel
with mates! he was wenching the finest Seantryn had to offer! All in the
stare and magic stream of words of the mysterious stranger... He was running
his hands through the thickest and purest doubloons in all Thera! He was
having his ear pecked by his effing parrot!
-FARGN! yelled Padraig, as his parrot took a huge nip at his ear. The
foghorn shout seemed to have an unsettling effect on the mysterious figure,
whose flow of whispers started to falter. Beads of sweat were forming on his
face as he struggled to maintain the rhythm and intonation of the spell he
was weaving.
The standoff was all the time Padraig needed. Shoving Malfoy with violence
enough to send him reeling down the deck, he was off in bounding strides for
the sides of his ship. The figures in black who observed him were aghast.
They had never had cause to doubt their master's powers now, and did not have
the slightest idea that Padraig was about to throw himself overboard.
In fact the first dawning of that comprehension was not the splash down
below, but the beat of the parrot's wing

The moon was full bright over the lapping waves of the Aryth, and as he
puffed on his pipe in the captain's lodgings, Padraig felt a deep sense of
contentment wash over him. The raid had been a total success. The frightened
faces of the merchant crew as they frenziedly handed over their alcoholic
cargo (rather than be forced to walk the plank) brought a smile to his face
as he recollected the day's events. Even the bird had gone to sleep and was
perched in near stillness on his shoulder.
But something was not quite right and he could not put his finger on it.
Normally on such a working day, his men would be packing the decks, making a
ruckus and singing shanties, with the occasional fight to spice up the dreary
routine of a sailing life. But although he had recalled some stirrings and
voices earlier, it was now completely quiet. Frowning and scratching his
greasy black beard, Padraig stumbled drunkenly to the door of his cabin,
awakening the brightly plumed parrot on his shoulder, which let out an
irritated squawk.
The midships were indeed packed full of his men all with dreamy smiles on
their faces. But there was something terribly wrong with their motion. The
purposeful swagger of those who had found their sea-legs years ago had been
replaced with the shambling gait of zombies, and as they walked, it was plain
to Padraig's eyes that there was no purpose in their movement. Turning the
language blue with choice oaths, he called out to the nearest.
Malfoy!, he slurred
Wha' in the name of Baerinika's frilly white undercrackers is goin' on?
This one o yer jokes, boyo? Because if it is, it'll be the keel fer yer
arse!
It was as if he had never spoken. The pipe fell from his mouth as Padraig
observed his bosun walk past without so much as a nod for acknowledgment. It
was then that he noticed that he and his crew were not alone. A man dressed
in a figure-hugging black one-piece costume strolled past and immediately
turned, fixing Padraig with a disinterested and cold stare. He yelled across
the board:
Sir - it's not worked with this one! Seek further command!
