Description

Her eyes are large for her round face, and her hair hangs in soft draping loops loosely bundled behind her head. The course ends of her hair stick out here and there around her round face, and her lips are full and inviting under her small nose. Her black wool collar is open to reveal the slope of her neck, it's smooth beauty bearing the blemish of a broad, shining scar that makes a half-moon around her throat. Her cloak drapes close to her body, the black wool draping only to her elbows and doing little to protect her from the cold. Her torso is slender and her legs long and lean. The world is governed by two simple principles: life and death.

Pophris Riathilanthia, born as the fourth daughter to a minor house
in Teth Azleth, grew up immersed in these two principles.  As a
young girl, she innately knew that to remain living, she must appear
as simultaneously useful and a non-threat.  Had she been overtly
allied with one of her first two sisters, she would have met an
unfortunate end in a cave-in or hook horror incident.  If she had
shown designs toward climbing in status, her sisters would have
disposed of her through more direct means.  Walking in political
shadows induced Pophris to pursue training as an assassin.

The mightiest columns of the Underdark are formed over the millenia
until they one day form the support for all of Thera's surface. They
bridge the chasm separating the stony depths and the dirt grubbers,
yet these lithic structures are built slowly.  

Strength of spirit is built slowly, too, and this youngest daughter
sees the importance of building her spirit through the accretion of
power until the day she is strong enough to stand on her own, a
pillar of the Underdark.  And from the priests of Urtrekis she has
come to see how the principles which have guided her life will shape
her death, and the deaths of those around her.  Her training may
one day help her harvest spirits akin to the great columns of her
homeland, and those strong enough will cross the bridge from this
life into death.

A name for myself

While I was idling in a roadside inn, passing the time in pointless
games of chance, a sun-kisser approached and introduced herself as an
entertainer.  More likely a common tavern whore, but she named herself 
Uial and called herself a dancer and singer.  When the last of my coin 
had past into the pockets of the grinning gambler, I asked her to perform.

I can see how this one increases her tips, for she removed a good portion
of her clothing before ascending the stage and spouting a pathos-laden
ballad to some deceased lover.  Had it not been that I was a guest
among polite society, I would have struck her in the throat, I found it
so tiresome.

What is important was she had heard my name pass from the tongues of
travelers, and she intimated there had been a note of concern in their
voices. I have had a few successes in breaking open the corporeal
temple to allow spirits to journey beyond, and where it has been
possible I have given each a coin to pay the ferryman should they be
too weak to embrace salvation through Urtrekis.  

My duties supercede my desire for anonymity.  I continue my labors,
and I will embrace the burden of having a name.

Out of the Shadows and into the Shadow Sect

Pophris has had a long standing relationship with Ckath as an intelligense
broker, and after a centuries-long wait, he asked, "Why haven't you taken
the oath?"  Her answer, well-rehearsed in her responses to Jeikdurr and 
Damgril, the only other imperials to ask her, was "I've been waiting for 
someone for I respected to ask."

The two went to a secluded location and discussed Ckath's plans for 
assuming the Imperial throne.  Ckath would supply Pophris with coin, 
equipment and words of praise in Adarmar's ear, to the desired end of being
elevated to Shadowlord. In exchange, she would do her part in elevating 
Ckath to the throne, and when that would accomplished, he would lead her
into the Inferno to meet Dispater. Ckath claimed that it was he who had 
destroyed Jeikdurr's and Damgril's careers, and he stated that he would not 
be against leaving the Black Sect empty during his reign.  Pophris saw these 
as pleasant pandering to her tastes, but she was politic enough to give a 
wry smile at all the appropriate moments.

During this conversation, the hissing voice of Dispater joined them, and the
demon asked how accomplished Pophris was in her craft.  Pophris explained
that she was not by philosophy or tactics one to kill in the manner of a Blade.
Pophris had 26 assassinations to her name, which drew looks of approval from
Ckath, and Pophris was charged by Dispater to improve her skill until the moment
when Adarmar was to be dispatched.

Ckath asked her to swear two oaths, and the second of the two was to the Empire.

Steps

Added Tue May 4 16:39:48 2010 at level 40:

For much of my life, I have been cursed with this elvish-sounding surname, a
name in Teth Azleth that has damned my family to a position of near servitude
for the better part of a millenium.  But now, after years of innocuous smiles
and disarming endearments, I am on the cusp of power.  House Riathilanthia has
risen to the surface, and my name is uttered among my enemies in nervous
whispers and in false bravado.

I have many labors to accomplish before I complete my goals in this world.
I need progress in the art of assassination, and I seek to strengthen my
influence--and the Shadow sect's position--in the Empire.  When I completed
my obligation to Ckath, and assuming he takes me to visit Dispater without
the betrayal I expect, I will take my acquired power and tear down the First
House of Teth Azleth and all within it.

I hunger to earn power from Dispater's hands.  For centuries my prayers to
Urtrekis fell on deaf ears, but in Dispater I may acquire what I need, what I
deserve.  I will learn how to pay proper reverence to this devil, and then
from him whatever dark arts he may impart.
