Description
Quzevril is fairly tall for a dark-elven man at six feet of height. His
posture is proud, straight-backed, with chin held high. There is an overall
openness, even brashness, about that pose which belies the dark-elven
reputation of guardedness and treachery. That pose, along with his apparent
lack of aversion to sunlight, hints at a long life, or even an upbringing,
spent above the surface of Thera. His attire and effects appear martial in
nature, with weapons and a shield kept meticulously clean. A well-made
travelling cloak wrapped about his broad shoulders has a deliberate
insignia embroidered possibly by a skilled craftsman, yet the insignia is
not of a prominent organization. His long bluish-silver hair is worn in an
elegant, yet practical, half-up ponytail. The upper half of his hair is
held back by a silver barrette studded with opalescent blue moonstones,
whose shade and shimmer flatter the colour of his well-groomed locks.
Quzevril is fine of face and fair of form. His arms and legs are long and
lithe, ending in fairly large hands and feet. His frame is reassuringly
sturdy for an elf, with an impressive height and breadth enhanced by his
poise and breezy confidence. His face is broad with a strong jaw and chin,
and his lips are full and expressive, often curving into a warm, engaging
smile, a sarcastic smirk, or a sympathetic frown - fluidly adapting
wherever his conversations lead. Smooth, unmarred ebony skin kept in
perfect condition gives him a gentle, inviting aesthetic. With eyes of a
warm maroon, and harmonious facial features never straying too far from the
averages of a dark-elven male, Quzevril exudes an effortless, soothing charm.
Role
House Dralythir
Added Tue Mar 19 09:46:00 2024 at level 11:
The plains to the north of Udgaard are home to farming communities of
unremarkable size. These communities are ruled by local lords who regularly
pay just enough tribute to Udgaard Loke to keep his armies well-fed and
away from their farms. Of these local rulers, they are typically organized
into clans roughly fashioned after the typical aristocracy that runs much
of Thera. One of these ruling houses is House Dralythir, which ruled the
farming regions Harjelan, Osterlund, and Varmlan.
If that name sounds familiar, it is because it is the name of a historical
figure, the Empress Sulirye Dra'lythir. House Dralythir is missing an
apostrophe, and no, it is not an error in my narration. House Dralythir is
a young upstart House, wanting to borrow the prestige of a prominent name.
The house comprises dark-elves as the main aristocratic family, and since
they had risen quite recently into a position of nobility, they had to
invent a better name to surpass their historically humble beginnings. So,
they picked the name of the most famous dark-elf mortal adventurer they
could think of at the time, and that was the Empress Sulirye. Another famed
contemporary, Xzelyx Vo, was the Commander of a village of savages, and
thus not an appropriate role model for a would-be noble house. When they
adopted the name based on the stories they'd heard, they were ignorant of
the exact spelling of the esteemed Sulirye's last name.
Every Dralythir noble child knows the story of their house's ascent by
heart. The previous rulers grew fat and greedy, and extracted more taxes
on top of the already hefty tributes paid to Udgaard Loke. Greed and
oppression are all well and good, but not when it tips over into a peasant
revolution. The founding Lady Dralythir, Quilevane, was a Healer of some
talent and a follower of the Lord Rillan. Walking amongst the peasants,
curing their ailments, lending a listening ear, spreading her words with
conviction and eloquence, Quilevane soon gained a loyal following. When the
oppressive rulers pushed too hard, Quilevane's followers grew into an
unstoppable tide, and armed with farming implements and Lord Rillan's
blessings, these followers overthrew their rulers and installed Quilevane
as the new beloved leader.
Quzevril Dralythir
Added Tue Mar 19 09:46:26 2024 at level 11:
Since then thirteen generations have passed, and Lady Quilevane Dralythir
had passed away. The house was ruled by her great-grandson Quelthenas, and
Quzevril was born, ten generations below that ancient patriarch. Since dark
elves live very long lives and reach sexual maturity many hundreds of years
before they die, families spanning so many generations are not uncommon.
Quzevril was the most promising child of his cohort. Like all the most
promising young Dralythirs, Quzevril trained as a Healer. That guild has a
particular prestige in this family due to its role in the founding mother's
victory. Groomed from a young age to someday become a Lord, Quzevril was
full of self-assurance and even entitlement. He viewed his position, and
the position of his house, as the natural order of things. He was taught
from a young age how to walk the tightrope of rulership, to project power
and authority, and yet to always be aware that same power could easily
crumble in a flash if he should make too many mistakes. The peasant masses
who toiled for his house, could just as easily destroy his house if their
bellies were unfed and their hands idle.
No expense was spared in young Quzevril's education. He was trained in arts
ecumenical, martial, and even intellectual. He eagerly devoured knowledge
of fields as diverse as geography, transmutation, physical science,
politics, herblore, and so on. But, as with many adventurers, this was
not enough for the overwhelming ambition of our hero.
First World Problems
Added Tue Mar 19 09:46:47 2024 at level 11:
It was very hard, being Quzevril. Such talent, such elegance, such merit,
to be squandered away and wasted for many many generations until some
patriarch or matriarch saw fit to appoint him the successor. Yet, as many
as nine elder generations of talented people stood between him and his
desired position. Though the Dralythirs were dark-elves, being newer
generations born of migrants to the surface, they did not practise the
same constant creative destruction that allowed younger houses or younger
elves to rise suddenly to power by murder.
Quzevril initially plotted to murder his way to the top. Of his many fields
of study, one he devoted exceptional attention to was the study of poisons.
Despite his best efforts however, such study would draw up no solutions
for him. A House full of Healers? Might as well try to poison a dwarf.
Then, he contemplated more martial means. A heavy mace to the head could
end a life quicker than a Healer could come. But, in the crowded environment
of House Dralythir, he would easily be caught. Quzevril considered also
enlisting some peasants to act as his proxies in murder, but alas, his house
was too successful in its stewardship of Harjelan, Osterlund, and Varmlan.
A less-ambitious young elf would be content to wait, and in the meantime
enjoy a life of comfort and privilege. But not Quzevril. Quzevril was the
best. He was the best in many generations. Maybe even all of them. He would
rule. Who has power over House Dralythir? Udgaard, of course. Udgaard took
tributes delivered by House Dralythir every year. And so Quzevril set off
for Udgaard.
Udgaard's Yokel
Added Tue Mar 19 09:47:08 2024 at level 11:
In Udgaard, Quzevril's eyes were opened. All of Thera he had learned from
books and tutors, but they did not prepare him for experiencing it in
person. Streets full of wealth and crime and power and secrets. Hierarchy
nested so many levels up, he could imagine twenty degrees of separation
dividing him, a young Healer working in the guild, from Udgaard Loke
himself. It fascinated him, energized him.
Quzevril had to start somewhere. He took the work he could do best, which
was to work as a Healer. Healers are wanted everywhere, universally loved
and easily worshipped. It was a better path to power than most. Things
went well very quickly as one might expect, between Quzevril's guild and
his natural talent, charm, and hard work. He was a rising star in Udgaard's
hierarchies, and he was enormously pleased. In a decade he hoped to
whisper in Udgaard Loke's ear and persuade him to install Quzevril as the
new head of House Dralythir.
Until he saw something which aroused his ambitions even further. He saw an
adventurer, a duergar priest, who visited a few times. Each time he visited,
he would spent a pile of gold on various potions and dusts. He even
occasionally slew men-at-arms and looted their corpses of pitch-black rings,
and brazenly walked away with no punishment from Udgaard. He appeared and
disappeared as if on a magical whim, moving more quickly than Quzevril had
ever seen any denizen of Udgaard do. Such careless, wondrous power!
Rapid Summons
Added Tue Mar 19 09:47:51 2024 at level 11:
One day, when this priest appeared again, and was buying the healing
services of an Afskyelige child, Quzevril stepped forward boldly, not
fearing for his life. He questioned this priest, and by some strange stroke
of fate the priest did not strike young Quzevril down where he stood.
Perhaps the priest thought it so unusual to be approached by a mere denizen,
that he patiently answered all the questions. To Quzevril's amazement, this
priest claimed to have seen Lord Rillan in person, being an adventuring
worshipper of the Lord. Not one of House Dralythir, even those Healers who
prayed and used his power, had ever had the privilege to meet the Lord in
person! Quzevril made a fateful decision right at that very moment. He
asked to become an adventurer. He would give what gold he had, which was
considerable.
The duergar shaman rubbed his beard and wrinkled his nose: aye, more gold
can't be hurtin'. Empire's coffers always be needing more bleedin' gold all
the burnin' time. Alright kid, ya give me a moment and ye hold on tight aye,
it be feeling mighty uncomfy yer first time. Just gimme yer name before we
start aye.
Then, the duergar shaman closed his eyes and hummed in prayer, and vanished
with a pop. Quzevril recognized that it must have been the word of recall,
taught to the shamans' guild. Then, he felt a lurch in his stomach and the
entire world whirled blindingly around him. Slightly nauseated, he could
still manage to look around. Incredible! He was in an even bigger city
than Udgaard. Cleaner, brighter, a bit less miserable, but still oozing
wealth and power and a lot more people living here by far. He gazed about
in wondering awe.
His reverie was interrupted by the grumbly duergar shaman: oy, quit yer
gawpin' before some urchin picks yer pocket. Summoned ya 'ere to Galadon,
yer at the dark temple. If'n ya can see a way down then maybe ya one of us
special enough to go see the Academy.
And so Quzevril's story begins.
Summary
Added Tue Mar 19 09:48:23 2024 at level 11:
Quzevril was born as a scion of a noble dark-elven house which ruled some
remote farming regions north of Udgaard. This house came to power several
centuries ago, by way of a bloody revolution led by the founder, which
overthrew the previous rulers and placed the founder at the top. Thus she
founded the noble house Dralythir, named after some famous dark-elven
Empress called Sulirye Dra'lythir.
Quzevril had a privileged upbringing, and was considered one of the most
talented Dralythir children of his generation. He was very well educated,
and did well in his role, but the prospect of having to wait so long for
his turn to become the Lord of the house made him look for quicker means
of achieving power. Murder was infeasible, so he travelled to Udgaard,
which was a major regional power to which his house paid tribute. While
slowly working his way up the Udgaard system using his healing abilities,
Quzevril ran into a duergar shaman adventurer who seemed to move around and
act with impunity and spend vast sums of gold at will.
He was so impressed with this adventurer that one day he approached, and
learned more about what adventurers do. He was exceptionally impressed that
this duergar had actually met Lord Rillan in person, whereas normal non-
adventuring priests who worshipped him had no chance to see him in person.
So Quzevril paid a good sum of money, asking to be made into an adventurer.
The duergar asked his name, then recalled, and then summoned him to the
dark temple where he was told to head down into the Academy.
Characteristics
Added Tue Mar 19 09:49:03 2024 at level 11:
Quzevril is exceptionally well-educated and intelligent, and often speaks
with sophistication and bombast.
Unlike other dark-elves, he will not come across as arrogant when speaking
to others. He prefers to use charm and persuasion when interacting.
Being from a noble house that rules over farming regions, he has a deep
connection to the sphere of Earth. Earth nurtures and sustains all, and is
the true deep source of life and power. In Quzevril's philosophy, power is
always sustained by bedrock. Just as life is sustained by Earth, so is
political authority sustained by the obedience of the masses.
He will seek Lord Rillan. Lord Rillan is the main God of his noble house,
and Lord Rillan's philosophies are what speak to him the most.
Quzevril is exceedingly ambitious, and wants to climb to as high of a
position as he can. In time, he will find the Empire an appealing option
for him, for its power far exceeds the humble power of his own noble
house. In time, Quzevril will reach such heights that he will wonder how
he ever thought being the ruler of House Dralythir was his end goal.
Update - Early Religion
Added Thu Apr 18 06:42:49 2024 at level 51:
At the 12th title, Quzevril decided to embark on a voyage to find Lord
Rillan's shrine and pray. The Lord granted Quzevril a portion of his power,
but bade Quzevril perform several tasks.
First, he was to exhance his charm, not just with charming equipment,
directly in the core of his being through hard training.
Second, Quzevril must never hesitate. Act decisively.
Third, spread word of Lord Rillan's magnificence and generosity to all.
Fourth, write to Lord Rillan a study of his tenets.
Finally, Quzevril must grow within the Empire and satisfy his ambition.
Update - Empire
Added Thu Apr 18 06:43:05 2024 at level 51:
Quzevril took the Blood Oath from the Shadow Lord, Mauotto, during a time
when Mauotto waged war against the Fortress and Quzevril aided him with
prayers. After the Blood Oath, it was a simple matter of donating gold to
earn the Prelate's approval to gain the first rank of Citizen and Divine
Voice.
There, Quzevril remained for a long while. He explored vast swathes of
Thera and advanced to the pinnacle of his guild, alongside the Dread Lord
Neshamar xun-Oloth and a shapeshifter who was a brief companion out of
convenience.
After reaching the pinnacle, the Emperor was much pleased with Quzevril's
services as a Divine Sect member, and over three separate promotions,
raised him to the status of High Priest. Quzevril felt himself infused with
a newfound vitality upon becoming one of Thera's prominent leaders.
Update - Further Religion
Added Thu Apr 18 06:43:52 2024 at level 51:
Of Quzevril's religious tasks, he had completed them all. Then, he sought
out Lord Rillan a while, though his Lord was silent. A test, thought
Quzevril, and he was determined to bear as heavy a burden as his Lord could
ever demand.
One day, Quzevril awakened. Lord Rillan soared in the heavens above, visible
to all mortals, but by reflex, Quzevril greeted first the mortals of the
Empire. Upon this slight, Lord Rillan smote Quzevril with the very Earth
itself. Quzevril knew he had erred, and made his pilgrimage to the shrine.
There, Lord Rillan chastised him for not putting him first, and left
without any further words. Quzevril was devastated, but he knew that a
faithful priest must always bear all challenges with equanimity and
fortitude, and so he did.
Quzevril is a very goal-oriented, ambitious person. So he set out a check-
list of things he shall do in penance, and declared them to his Lord, in
his Lord's shrine. Lord Rillan's statue shifted, as if in recognition of
his young priest's promises. A sense of relief flooded Quzevril, and then
he took his Lord's continued silence as a sign that he should proceed to
perform his penance.
Some adventure then continued in the Underdark and Teth Azeleth, with the
rest of the Council. Then, Lord Rillan appeared in the heavens once more,
and Quzevril made haste to leave the party to attend to spiritual matters.
He went to the Lord's shrine and sat before the statue, penning scrolls of
praise to Lord Rillan, which was one of his declared penances. Then, the
omniscient Lord appeared before him, and further communion between God and
follower ensued. To summarize, the tasks Quzevril shall perform are:
First, to pen scrolls praising his Lord's magnificence and generosity, and
give them to the people, along with gifts of gold. Second, to visit the
younger rank-and-file Citizens, and generously aid and guide them to
greater heights. Third, to master thoroughly the systems of banking and
trade, by unlocking the final skill of trade connections. Fourth, to
become one of the richest people in Thera. Finally, to build up his
foundation of power in the Empire and eventually seek out the throne.
Update - Imperial Intrigue
Added Thu Apr 18 06:44:14 2024 at level 51:
The Dread Lord Neshamar xun-Oloth, Quzevril's closest comrade, approached
him one fateful day and asked a series of questions culminating in a truly
profound question: would Quzevril support him in a call for a coup against
the sitting Emperor, Hranik?
The conversation was long, but the essence of it was that Quzevril committed
to supporting the Dread Lord's candidacy. Quzevril, the recent High Priest,
raised by the Emperor, felt no particular disloyalty to the Emperor. But,
he recognized there was greater merit in the Dread Lord, and truth in what
the Dread Lord said. The Emperor, though dutiful, was not a talented leader.
More often he sought to find treasures in dark places, but would not lead
well in battle against the Empire's enemies. The Dread Lord, on the other
hand, was more than capable in both.
Talent like the Dread Lord's comes once in a generation, Quzevril knew, and
leadership like this could raise the Empire to a new golden age of glory.
So Quzevril made the fateful decision to support the initiation of a coup,
and to vote for the Dread Lord.
Update - Interactions with the Imperial Leaders
Added Thu Apr 18 06:44:33 2024 at level 51:
Dread Lord Neshamar. This is Quzevril's closest comrade, one could even say
friend. He is talented, generous, an exemplar of Lord Rillan's faith, and a
skilled leader and excellent fighter. The only fault Quzevril ever found in
Neshamar was that Neshamar was willing to perform a quest for Cantydine, a
suspected associate of the Scions openly seen with Nightwalker servitors.
Shadow Lord Mauotto. He inducted Quzevril into the Empire with the Blood
Oath. He has fallen a few times in battle, and always did not lack courage
to enter the fray. Yet, Quzevril found his mutterings somewhat
scatterbrained, and did not approve of his travelling with a chaotic Orc
called Watclawsh.
War Master Brenwade. Like Mauotto, brave in charging into battle. Like
Mauotto, tending to fall in battle too carelessly. Quzevril likes Brenwade
well enough, but did not have as high of an esteem as he did Neshamar.
Emperor Hranik. Of the Council, Quzevril sees the Emperor the least. The
Emperor had always been fair to Quzevril, and Quzevril is grateful for the
promotions from the Emperor to the position of High Priest. However, he did
disapprove of the Emperor's lack of leadership during situations of war, in
one instance this led to Hranik and Mauotto falling in combat at the
Destructor to the powerful Drillmaster, Hrendya. Overall, Quzevril has a
positive opinion of the Emperor, but believes Neshamar would make a more
powerful Emperor.
Updates 2 - The Imperial Coup
Added Mon May 6 10:51:34 2024 at level 51:
The Imperial Intrigue ended with a victory for Neshamar. Long live the new
Emperor! Quzevril breathed a sigh of relief. He had assuaged Hranik's
concerns enough that he thought Hranik did not suspect him. Nevertheless,
Neshamar was the better choice and happily the Empire's fortunes rose with
Emperor Neshamar's coronation.
The days of being consistently outnumbered and defeated by the rebels soon
drew to a close. Not an absolute close, but the war situation became much
more balanced. When both High Priest Quzevril and Emperor Neshamar were
around, seldom could the rebels find any victory. Quzevril is very proud of
his contribution to the newfound Imperial might, and he credits himself and
Emperor Neshamar as the chief architects of this glorious new era.
Quzevril knows he still has further to work on in terms of leadership.
Neshamar leads the troops into battle with concise, precise instructions,
allowing even the less talented fighters to overcome strong foes. Quzevril
has done this several times, but more work must be done to continue to
burnish his reputation as a great leader.
Quzevril has ambitions to fulfill more roles in the Empire. First, he
wishes to morally lead the Empire in more ways. As High Priest, he has a
unique ability amongst the Sect Leaders to promote and demote in other
Sects. This Quzevril has used to raise up worthy members of other Sects.
But more than that, Quzevril wishes to morally guide the Empire in matters
concerning war and associations with those non-Oathed which may or may not
be appropriate for an Imperial. For example, Quzevril does not approve of
overly close relationships with the Orcs, though he may accept Orcish aid
in a war against the rebels.
Second, he knows that as Thera's most competent Healer, he is uniquely able
to empower the Empire and only the Empire to lead a trip to take down the
most fearsome of foes that Therans have ever heard of. The ancient dragons,
the dragon queen Tiamat, and even the challenges of the Water Temple. The
new Emperor plans such trips, and Quzevril will be a keystone in enabling
these great feats.
Updates 2 - Completing Tasks of Religious Growth and Penance
Added Mon May 6 10:52:39 2024 at level 51:
Earlier, Quzevril vowed to perform tasks to grow in his Lord Rillan's faith:
First, to pen scrolls praising his Lord's magnificence and generosity, and
give them to the people, along with gifts of gold. Second, to visit the
younger rank-and-file Citizens, and generously aid and guide them to
greater heights. Third, to master thoroughly the systems of banking and
trade, by unlocking the final skill of trade connections. Fourth, to
become one of the richest people in Thera. Finally, to build up his
foundation of power in the Empire and eventually seek out the throne.
Of these, Quzevril has accomplished most except the throne. With Emperor
Neshamar so worthy and marked by the Lord, Quzevril is content to remain in
the position of High Priest. When it is time to seek out the throne, he
knows that the very masses, the very Earth itself would make its weight
known in that direction. Citizens would admire his leadership and cry out
for him to rise further. This does not happen, because Emperor Neshamar is
a worthy leader. But everyone has a replacement, and if Neshamar should
flag in his enthusiasm for serving the people. Well, then Quzevril is
ready to nobly take on the mantle of sacrifice for the Citizens.
Suffice to say, Quzevril is making headway in that direction. Aiding the
young and building up his support base, it gradually empowers Quzevril
and gives him more political power for the future.
As for whether Quzevril is one of the richest. He thinks he must be, with
more than three thousand gold in the bank. But he cannot be sure until he
next hears from the resplendent Lord himself.
A Pair of Crossing Splitting Mauls of Gold and Stone
Added Thu Jun 13 10:43:05 2024 at level 51:
Quzevril laboured and toiled immensely. In the intervening decades, the
Emperor Neshamar, with the aid of his Lord Rillan, announced a project to
permanently enhance the Imperial Lands with a Monument to Imperial Law.
Quzevril submitted a design for it, and also devoted six thousand pieces of
gold to the effort, which required a grand total of sixty thousand gold
coins raised by the collective Empire.
Quzevril's was the highest donation by far. And his design of the Monument,
with the likeness of Lord Rillan, gave the highest praise and priority to
his patron Lord. He made a great many contributions as an exceptionally
talented Healer, winning countless battles against the rebels of Redhorn,
Ostalagiah, and Prosimy, and even mighty Dragons and mighty subterranean
monsters and rulers.
Alongside all these victories in the material world, Quzevril regularly
penned scrolls of moral philosophy, inspired by Rillan's tenets, to the
Empire, and established himself as a leading figure just below the Emperor
Neshamar. He knew he had the respect of the people.
So one day the Lord Rillan appeared to Quzevril, and with a great gift in
hand Quzevril supplicated before his great Lord, and was rewarded with the
mark of the Lord Himself. A pair of crossing splitting mauls of gold and
stone. Quzevril was beside himself in rapturous joy. And he received yet
further missions from the Lord Rillan.
First, to punish Travanz for disrespecting the Lord. Second, to succeed
Emperor Neshamar and fill the void after his inevitable death by old age
or even a possible early retirement. Third, to learn of the new Lord
Xathanael, make contact with his followers, and perhaps even recruit a
follower of Xathanael's. Fourth, to restore Quzevril's fortune to its
former glory, before his massive donation to the Monument project.
