Description
A short and squat figure idles here, bony limbs sprawling from its rotund
little figure like broken twigs shoved into an apple. A vacant gaze
rests upon his face, overpowering severely awkwardly proportioned
features: a wide, angled snout resembling an ignored thorn breaking the skin;
a broad half-sneer punctuated by yellowed lower teeth biting over top of his
upper lip; and large, wet eyes akin to the bulbous globes of a frog. At
the top of his forehead, just beneath his helm, you see a large, partially
healed gash, a nasty wound that was likely the gifted by the viscious
overhead swing of a giant axe. Strapped to his back are a number of wooden
bows of various sizes, and a large quiver packed overtight arrows, their
fletchings torn, warped and bent. Across his belt is a fearsome assortment
of rare knives, fangs, and talons. Most curiously, a large bag hangs at
his waste, soaked with what appears to be either red wine or fresh blood.
Role
The Very Hungry Goblin
Added Thu Nov 12 11:19:21 2020 at level 22:
Ragglerut was a very hungry goblin. Oh how his belly grumbled, so desperate
always for any scrap of flesh, any chunk of meat. He would always do anything
for food!
That is why the Orcs liked him. Ragglerut the goblin was prized of his litter
for his ever-so-strong hunger drive. Hungry goblins were obedient goblins,
after all.
And so it was that Ragglerut was always eager to please the Orcs of Grinning
Skull - never satisfied, he always wanted more bacon, more steak, more, more,
more. Even an old cave mushroom would often be enough to get his attention.
Hungry as he was, Ragglerut took to often testing his surroundings to see if
they were edible. He discovered most things that moved were edible, things
that looked like they used to move were edible, and things that didn't move,
while probably not edible, still might be.
And once Ragglerut was released to be the independent but easily-controlled
hunter he was bred to be, he was thrilled to discover a world full of tasty
treats. Alas, Ragglerut was very slow to learn that not everything would
allow itself to be eaten.
The Special, Secret Idea
Added Mon Dec 14 15:27:16 2020 at level 28:
One day, the hungry little goblin Ragglerut heard that the great Goblin
King Skreenak was loose in Thera! The Goblin King was so powerful that when
he tried to take his tribute from a village, an angel had to come down from
above to stop him! Ragglerut wondered how another little goblin could have
become be so great and so feared.
As his curiosity grew, so did his hunger for more than stale steak or rancid
bacon. He wanted to find Skreenak, and learn to be a scary goblin like
him. Those big orcs wouldn't boss Ragglerut around anymore. Those sneaky
assassins wouldn't try to skewer Ragglerut anymore. With the Great Skreenak's
help, Ragglerut thought, he could eat whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
Maybe he could even walk into Galadon whenever he wanted, and buy berry pie!
And so Ragglerut set about to find the Great Goblin King Skreenak. Finding
Skreenak was Ragglerut's special idea.
The orcs who fed, trained, and armored Ragglerut could never find out about his
quest. Oh, how furious they would be if they knew their faithful little minion
had even thought about stepping out of line! That's why finding Skreenak was
also a *secret* idea.
Ragglerut could have very much used the big orcs' aid, of course. He noticed
that the large black altar where the orcs stored their spoils was always full
of things like tiny glowing keys, perhaps for unlocking unknown treasures, and
giant heavy rafts, likely for traversing wide seas to far away lands. The big
orcs clearly knew much about this big land. But Ragglerut did not. And as much
as he had learned while racing about on his giant spider, he still knew not
where goblin Kings dwelled.
Ragglerut knew one thing - people were talking about how the evil Goblin King
had found a forgotten dwarven treasure room. But as much as dwarves were known
for finding nice treasures to steal, they were also know for forgetting lots of
rooms. How would he ever find such a place when the world was full of random
forgotten dwarf tunnels?
But Ragglerut was a clever little goblin, and he had some ideas for how to get
help. It is not in a goblin's nature, after all, to just do things for himself.
Ragglerut would start by seeking out the wisest and most powerful figures in
Thera, who would surely be able to reveal clues he sought without even
remembering the random whims of some lowly Grinning Skull skulker. The heros of
Thera had much wisdom to share, they just needed the right motivation to share
it.
Ragglerut and the Goblin King

Ragglerut was frustrated. He had beseeched and extorted Thera's most notorious
heros for wisdom, but none were wise to the goblin king Skreenak's whereabouts.
* He bargained with Galadon's Kingpin, Jisko Jones, but there was no insight
to be bargained for.
* He appealed to the dark needs of the terrible mummy, Itzenxilaatl
Rubrumstell, but the mummy knew no news of Skreenak.
* He even disguised himself as an innocent gnome looking for dwarven treasure
to win a nugget of knowledge from the Inn of the Eternal Star's reknowned
Taleteller, Boldr the storm giant, but the Taleteller was a stupid fat
know-nothing.
As Ragglerut grew hungrier and hungrier for answers, little did he know that
the immortal Goblin King was watching and amusing himself with the foolish
little goblin's failures. He sent little Ragglerut this way and that, testing
his resolve, but like a starved rodent sniffing out a hidden scrap, Ragglerut
persisted.
Finally, the hungry little goblin stumbled into a tunnel hidden in plain sight,
right off the path he walked everyday. Bones and excrement and blood lined the
walls and floor, and instinctively, Ragglerut followed it to its end, and there
discovered it - Skreenak's lair. Almost instantaneously, the terrible goblin
king arrived right out of the mists, pulled by a hideous train of enslaved and
beaten gnomes. Ragglerut suddenly questioned his situation, and cowered before
the terrible sight of Skreenak Bloodmaw!
But King Skreenak was unlike any king Ragglerut had ever known. While he wore
the finest in riches, like most kings, he also traveled with a portable
throne of gold, and he did not take pleasure in Ragglerut's cowering. He told
him instead to stand tall, and spoke to Ragglerut as if he were, well, just
anyone. Ragglerut was so used to bowing and kneeling and begging and
flattering, it didn't feel right to speak to the one who had what he wanted as
if he were an equal. That changed things for Ragglerut. Skreenak told
Ragglerut to act big and be big, and promised rewards in return. He also,
incidentally, made Ragglerut give him lots of stuff.
Ragglerut left the goblin king's lair feeling dangerous, conniving, and with his
life full of possibility. But it wouldn't be long before Skreenak would ask for
even more stuff.
Ragglerut and the Very Big Problem
Added Sat Apr 10 00:01:01 2021 at level 40:
Ragglerut was a hungry little goblin who wanted so much to become big and scary, just like
the great goblin king, Skreenak. But after successfully holding court with the goblin
king himself, Ragglerut found himself with a very big problem.
For Ragglerutt boasted to the immortal goblin king that he could gain as much with guile
and craftiness as an orc could with blood and bashing. This led the clever Skreenak
Bloodmaw to challenge Ragglerut to do no less than unseat the long-lived chief of Grinning
Skulls, Zodslag Nightrage. Ragglerut was just a lowly goblin who couldn't even touch a
Theran hero, what did he get himself into? On to of that, Ragglerut thought the old chief
had been good to him. He once gave Ragglerut a magic dagger made of water! But Skreenak
knew secrets that Ragglerut had yet to learn. Bad, terrible secrets!
As Ragglerut probed about the Grinning Skulls village, he slowly uncovered horrible
truths. First, Ragglerut discovered that Chooltog had been ordered to not lteach Ragglerut
how to make his own steaks - the chief wanted to ensure that this lone little goblin could
only get tasty steaks from the orcs he served!
Then, Ragglerut found out that Tremblefist was not allowed to tell goblins which items of
Thera's great cabals he held. Ragglerut realized that he truly was nothing more than a
errand-runner bred by Zodslag's village to run all over the land fetching this or that. This was the real problem!
But Zodslag Nightrage was both a fierce and clever orc. He towered above all other orcs,
wielded a big giant sword, and won the orc's loyalty with gifts and feats of victory. No
orcs even considered challenging him. Not Nulgha Five-Eyes, the fierce Mundugu who filled the altar with the spoils of his victims. Not Burzbog, the fierce Shig-Ru who scared
Paladins into hiding. But there was one - a mean orc who never gave Ragglerut any snacks
or armors - Omugug. Omugug raced through the lands leaving corpes in his wake, and openly
pried Ragglerut for information on Zodslag, not ashamed to admit his desire to find him,
even though the two were never, ever awake at the same time. Ragglerut didn't like Omugug.
But Omugug might have to be the answer to his very big problem.
Omugug and the Very Daring Rescue
Added Mon Apr 19 12:34:10 2021 at level 40:
One day, a foolish little goblin named Ragglerut got himself into a great deal of trouble.
As everyone knows, goblins are not strong readers, and so it was far from Ragglerut's
fault that didn't understand the laws of Galadon; nor was it his fault that he couldn't
see a sneaky magistrate assassin hiding in the alleys watching for law-breakers,
unwitting or not.
Ragglerut just wanted the guild guard's fist of lightning to protect himself with from
Sqrebik the Record-Keeping arial. That evil, lusty anti-paladin kept tricking Ragglerut
into forgetting to drink his daily spider venom, and repeatedly sneaked up on him and
enchanted him to sleep, just so could suck the little goblin's soul into his big javelin.
Ragglerut did not like that.
But when Ragglerut tried to pry the lightning out of the guild guard's hands, oh what a
commotion! Before he knew what happened, out of nowhere someone slapped manacles on him
and two big fat guards pounded him to a pulp and confiscated all his money and weapons!
Now, Ragglerut could get more money, but he had spent a lot of time collecting these
special weapons. Not only did he lose the sharpest little axe in the land, but also the
sharpest tiny dagger of iron in the land! But worst of all, he lost his three magical bows
- one bow he had held since he first learned how to shoot arrows.
Ragglerut was most upset! So he decided that he would break into the Spire and steal his
weapons back! But those sneaky Tribunals were still about, and made him a wanted criminal
yet again! As Ragglerut attempted to flee Galadon, he was met by the Enforcer himself, and
where he again met justice face first on the ground.
It was at this point that Ragglerut entreated the very mean orc Omugug to help him. Omugug
himself was already a wanted criminal. Ragglerut knew not what for, but surely Omugug
could break in swiftly and steal back some of Ragglerut's special, special weapons?
Ragglerut had been trying to win Omugug over with promises of helping him overthrow the
stupid old chief Zodslag, so maybe he would help?
Omugug would. Omugug marched straight to town, and before Ragglerut was even corporeal,
the form of Omugug returned, bloodied and bruised, but with two arms hugging three fine
bows. The orc dropped them on the ground and had just muttered "I barely make it..." when
all of a sudden another pair of big guards lept on top of him, fists flying, and
finished poor Omugug off right before Ragglerut's astonished eyes.
As Ragglerut collected his bows, he thought to himself what a good chief Omugug would
make.
Little did Ragglerut know, this would be the last time he would see the mean but brave
orc Omugug.
