Description
Before you stands a young gnome mage with pale skin. His hair is dark and
looks slightly unkempt. He stands nearly three-foot tall, common among his
kin, but still short compared to humans. His eyes are a deep purple with a
reddish hue to the iris. His clothes are pristine and adorned with gaudy
symbols, mostly arcane. His eyes sparkle with delight as he takes in the
world around him.

A Quiet Romance

The quiet sounds of the forest can barely be heard as you near this waterfall
along the river Nanthor. Birds singing and insects chirping are lost to the
roar of the water as it cascades down the rocks and into the pool below. As
your gaze moves about the clearing you notice a small pool that forms off to
one side. A beautiful gnome female can be seen as she gently scrubs her hair
with her hands, washing the weeks grime away. The icy cold water doesnt
bother her as the bright sun warms the rocks she sits upon. Her thoughts are
elsewhere as she continues to go about cleaning herself. The faint splashing
of water doesnt bother her, nor does she even seem to notice them.
You turn your gaze toward the source of the rustling and realize that
something or someone is standing in the shadows of the cave just behind the
waterfall. As the woman continues to wash a pale face can be briefly seen
through the leaves. Green eyes gaze upon the form of the woman with a primal
lust. The figure makes another move within the cave and you realize that it
is a male svirfneblin. He has a bow slung across his back and a sword is
belted to his hip. His clothing is all shades of mottled browns, greens, and
blacks for blending into the wilds. He is obviously a ranger by trade and
his prey now sits upon the rocks, seemingly oblivious to her stalker.
The woman makes a subtle gesture and moves her body so that the svirf can
more easily see her features. She ducks a quick glance to see where the
figure is and you now realize she knows exactly what she is doing. The svirf
dives through the waterfall into the icy water and the woman feigns surprise
to see him, covering herself in an attempt to be modest. The svirf is not
dissuaded and quickly swims near to the. A familiar smile passes between the
man and woman as you realize this is all a game to them. The svirf takes the
woman up into his arms and together they make their way off into the cave,
out of your field of vision. You begin to wonder what they do. You then
shake your head as you realize exactly what they do!
An Uncommon Child:
Added Wed Feb 24 13:52:07 2010 at level 22:
A few months has passed since you have noticed the woman at the mountain
pool. Your gaze has wandered farther up the river Nanthor to a place where
many people have come to live in a small tented community. A shrine of some
sort rests off to the northeast, and many different types of people roam
within these plains. You have come to find the Oneheart people and your gaze
is suddenly drawn to a woman who looks much like the one you saw a few months
back. She is still beautiful, and a glow now permeates her presence. She
has grown a bit in the middle section. You realize that she is now with
child and you chuckle at your past thought. Other women within the Oneheart
camp encircle the woman and attempt to hand her baskets of food, and herbs
and other things she will need for what comes. It appears that she politely
thanks them all and gathers what is needed. You notice that she then
approaches an Elderly Oneheart Matron near the entrance to a tent where smoke
rises through the hole at the peak of the tent. The Matron nods at the young
woman as she approaches and opens the flap to the tent welcoming her with an
open invitation. The beautiful young woman disappears within and moments
later the svirf ranger can barely be seen near the side of the tent, his ear
pressed against the leather.
Hours go by and nothing really seems to be happening. Suddenly the Matron
flings wide the flap of the tent and calls out in a calm, but hurried tone.
Other elderly Oneheart women quickly make their way to the tent with supplies
in hand. One of the elderly women makes a motion to a large Oneheart man and
points him toward the river. He quickly collects the large pot at his feet
and makes his way to the river, filling it with water. He then places the
pot above a large fire and patiently waits for the water to boil. Once the
water is ready the man uses a large piece of wood and carries the now boiling
water to the tent where the elderly woman went. Soft cries can be heard from
the tent that eventually turns to the screams of a woman in pain. The
screaming continues for hours and eventually subsides. Another screaming has
taken the place of the woman though as the cries of a newborn babe resound
across the plains. The svirf ranger, knowing that his child was born safely,
ghosts away into the nearby caverns.
It Takes A Village

Years have gone by since your gaze last fell upon the plains where the child
was born. You look about for the woman and you find her near the river with
a young male child. The child sits on the ground and watches a tall man as
he makes motions in the air. The child squeals in delight as lights pour
forth from the man's fingertips. He sits in awe as fire dances between the
palms of the man, and you realize he is learning about magic.
A few days later you find the boy sitting again, but now with a different
mystic. This one bows its head and utters prayers and things happen without
the sizzle of magic. You realize that the boy is learning from this mystic
about prayer and the gods.
A few days later the boy is found again, but this time he is with a mystic
that not only uses his hands to perform wonders, but also transforms his body
into different animal parts and fights with quickness that no man can match.
The boy delights in the teaching and looks to his mother for support. She
nods her head and smiles and converses with the mage in front of the boy.
They seem to reach an agreement and the boy is clasped on the shoulder by the
mystic. A sense of power seems to flow as the man touches the boy and they
both smile with enthusiasm, as if a bond has just been formed. The mother,
seeing the passing of the bond smiles, but tears can also be seen through her
eyes as she gazes upon her son.
A year or two has gone by and now you see the young man walking without his
mother. It would seem that her love for him was enough to let him go and
follow his own path.
Teaching A Man To Fish

Many years have passed by since the last time you saw the svirf ranger
anywhere near his son. That does not however mean that the figure has not
eluded your vision. You realize this is definitely the case for the young
man as you notice the svirf ranger out from the caves in the southern reaches
of the camp and the young man shows no surprise. The young man instead
smiles and nods at his father. The father nods back and motions for the man
to follow him. This time you are fortunate enough to be able to keep up with
the two men as they make their way deeper in the caves.
You notice as the father turns to the son and points toward an alcove of a
cave. You surmise that the father is teaching the man about the bear that
lives within this cave by the motions he is making and the way in which he
moves. Having completed the lesson the men move farther along the cavern
system and you see them stop and look to the ground for tracks. It is
obvious to you that the man is teaching his son the tricks of surviving in
the wilderness even though the boy has not taken up his fathers full path.
The thought begins to go through your mind that perhaps this svirf has deep
feelings for the son in front of him. Many men would be upset that a son
would not care to follow his profession, but it would seem to you that this
father has decided to let the son choose his own path. The father truly
understands the nature of freedom, a trait the son has grown to love in
return.

Your gaze finally comes to rest upon the young man as he sits within a tent
with two pieces of parchment in front of him. He holds a pen in one hand and
you notice an ink jar sitting near him on the ground. As your gaze falls
upon the man you cant help but read what he is writing. He picks up the
first parchment and begins
Dearest Mother,
I thank you for all that you have done for me. You carried me for many
months as a babe within you, and gave birth to me in agony. You again
carried me for many years as I ran about the encampment and you were always
there to take me to the healers when I would fall and bump my knee. You had
the foresight to teach me as a young boy to cling to the thoughts of our
ancestors and to love the beauty around me. I thank you so much for the many
lessons I learned, even when I didnt want to. You taught me so much about
Thar-Eris and about the freedom to choose. You even allowed me to follow in
the ways of being a shapeshifter when the other promising young boys wanted
to be warriors or priests. It is hard to explain sometimes, but I feel it
all around me. The sense of magic is strong as I walk within the woods and
caves and come in contact with the animals. I just know Ive made the right
choice. I feel so much more alive when Im taking on the form of the animals
who roam free about us.
Thank you for always believing in me and supporting me. Thank you also for
all of the times that you let me go traipsing off into the caves with father.
I know your love for him is not strong, but you had care enough for me to
allow me to learn from him. I thank you, and I think many more people will
thank you as I grow stronger and fight for the mother as she cries out in
pain. I know what I must do, and it is my hope that the Outlanders will
allow me to join them.
With all of my love,
Ralue

Upon the second parchment the young man writes
Father,
It is my hope that you find this note and that it is not used by a squirrel
to make a nest for her babes. Though that would be a great thing, this note
is important. I want you to know that your teaching was invaluable. Your
trust in my decisions was gracious and your love for the lands inspiring.
It is my hope that in your travels you hear of my deeds as I go now from this
encampment to seek the wild places on my own. The mother needs my abilities
and I will give to her what I can. Magic flows freely through me and I feel
it coming to me from her as well. This power is great and can not be taken
for granted. It will be used to help the return of Thar-Eris.
Regards,
Ralue
The young man finishes the letters and takes them with him as he picks up his
traveling pack. His feet begin to quiver as he utters a phrase and suddenly
they are replaced by hooves. He makes his way from the tent never to return
to this meager shelter.
