Description
This storm giant is average height for his race, standing somewhere between
fourteen and fifteen feet tall. His build is strong and solid with broad
shoulders and thick arms suggesting a life of constant physical training or
hard manual labor. His skin is a light gray in color and while smooth in
general, it is textured like you would see on a specific type of coral known
as brain coral. He has a kind face with eyes that are a bright ocean blue
color. He has shoulder length hair that is thick and a similar texture to
green algae, but has a gray coloring.
Role
Overview
Added Tue Dec 8 12:33:21 2020 at level 11:
Ranil lived alone with his brother, who was an invalid after extreme PTSD
upon returning home from going out to fight against evil. He took care of
him, but was alone since his brother had somehow developed fear of the water,
or at least had an extreme reaction more when going into it. They lived on
the shores of Voralia's Tears, which was a close to water as he felt
comfortable for his brother.
As the years went on, Ranil's mercy grew as he felt for his suffering
brother, and as part of it, he started to train in ways of combat so he could
show that mercy to others, so that he could fight against evil in their
stead. He started with a mace he carved from driftwood, which was how he
developed a favor for large two-handed weapons, and developed a knack for
healing in keeping his brother hale.
His brothers name was Ranu, which Ranil took for a surname in honor of him.
Ranu died after initially starting to show some signs of coherence returning,
but he also shows great remorse that Ranil had to care for him and soon after
disappeared after leaving a note indicating he was going to kill himself.
Ranil looked for him for a time, but redoubled his efforts of training and
grew even more dedicated to becoming a paladin to join the Fortress as a
Maran.
The vow he spoke to himself was "I will fight evil, so that others might find
peace" and will seek the Lady Azorinne, who he recently heard of and seemed
to suit his path.
His ethos is orderly, which came from his years spent in routine of caring
for his brother and also finding time to train himself.
Fortitude Defined
Added Thu Dec 10 17:38:59 2020 at level 15:
It was hard for Ranil when Ranu came back home, as to be expected. Their
parents had died when he was very young, and that event was the reason his
elder brother had left home to go to war against evil. They were from near
Loch Terradian and leaving a youngling alone was not a strange occurrence,
there were plenty of others to care for him. But once Ranu came back a shell
of himself, Ranil led his brother away from the lake to find comfort once it
was clear the water for some reason was no home now to his brother, and
caused him excess stress.
He did what he had to do after that. He learned to wipe the drool from Ranu's
face or in this air the skin would dry and crack and cause sores. He changed
Ranu's clothing, and cleaned him when he soiled himself. He cried at night
with Ranu when night terrors set in, and despite all this instead of pity for
his brother, he found respect growing instead. He found strength when his
brother needed it, like his brother found strength when he felt it was time
to go out and fight against the ones that killed their parents. Fortitude
kept Ranil from giving up, because he was all his brother had, and if he was
not strong enough now to help him, Ranu was no longer able do it himself.
Later when Ranu started to speak again often spoke about how strong Ranil had
become. He was proud at first, but then he began to realize Ranu wasn't only
saying how strong his little brother was, he was also saying how weak he
himself thought he was. And though he started to downplay it to bolster is
brother up instead, he did start to see that he WAS strong. Strong enough to
do what was needed when someone else was not. It applied to here and now with
caring for his brother, and it applied to elsewhere as well, doing important
things in Thera like his brother tried to, but being strong enough for him,
and others like him, so that they didn't have to be strong, he had the
fortitude within himself to do it in their stead. That was when his vow
started, and when he lost it brother, it was what led him to saving someone
else's brother or sister this time, and fight so that they would not have to.
What Bad Dreams Are Made Of
Added Thu Dec 31 10:47:59 2020 at level 32:
Ranil still dreams of Ranu. It had always been a good way for him to remember
his brother's face, which was becoming harder to call to mind while waking,
but lately the dreams have not been from good memories. The dreams have
started to be the reoccurring sort, ones of when Ranu was starting to become
more lucid, but also having more bad dreams of his own about what had broken
him before he returned home. Necromancers.
He never really got a good description of what Ranu dreamed of. Even when he
started talking again he wouldn't talk about that, but the things he said in
his sleep painted a good enough picture. Words like zombie, crimson scourge,
poison, undead, and nonsense muttering of something that sounded like GRZZS,
that is what he heard when Ranu had these sort of dreams. He always suspected
it was related to necromancers, but he didn't know for sure until more
recently.
Fights against the enemy of the Light have been going well. He was adjusting
to trying to let enemies think they had an advantage so they would commit to
the fight, and then when they were going on the offensive, Ranil had learned
to turn the tide on them and have them completely caught off-guard. But
necromancers for him, had become the same challenge that had apparently
besieged his brother. The spell that lulled him to sleep was the first thing
to deal with, and then even when that was avoided those undead things in the
numbers they walked with was very difficult to deal with. He had fought them
still, but it had not gone well, and he was resorting to trying to summon the
zombies and other undead from their side to fight them in that way, while
thinking of new tactics to use for a direct encounter. He hadn't learned to
turn undead, but perhaps it was time to utilize some precious practice
sessions with the guild for that, and see if it might help in gaining some
new advantage.
