Description

A long, lithe figure, Rasst moves with feline grace. His fur is a dull brown and short, matted heavily with mud, sweat, and other strange substances of natural origin. His razor-sharp claws extend and retract in step with his careful, calculated breathing. Citrine eyes glare maliciously from beneath his furry visage, scanning the surroundings relentlessly for any prey. Scars run up and down his body, some pulling the fur back completely to reveal unnatural, permanent memories of battles fought with magic, not claw and metal.

Role

The Massacre

The hooded apparition glided closer.  A skeletal hand reached from beneath a
inky black cloak and pointed towards the shivering form of a young felar
well-camoflauged (but not well enough) in the knot of a birch.
"You...." the voice rasped ominously, "...will not be so lucky as the
others."  Rasst was suddenly overcome with a sinking feeling upon surveying
the carnage before him, the smell of rotting felar already starting to
permeate the hot swamp air,
bodies of the rest of his pack littering the once peaceful swamp.  The sheer
terror of these words caused the young fela to slump to the ground weakly. 
The horror's bony finger beckoned ever-so-gently at Rasst, and the fela felt
like his soul was being extracted from inside him.  Suddenly, his will was no
longer his own, and as if in a dream, he moved slowly yet awkwardly, like a
mindless golem, bent to the lich's desire.

Death would have been a kind fate for this poor soul.

A Gruesome Task

"Good..", mused the lich.  "My minions are sinking in a quag somewhere in
this cursed swamp, so you will have to do."  "Collect your friends' femurs,
all of them.  The Dark One is waiting."One by one, Raast watched in horror
as his own hands slashed the fur and penetrated the flesh of his family and
friends, deboning them skillfuly, unconciously, and against his every
impulse.  He vomited in revulsion at least once, but his paws kept going,
relentlessly doing the lich's task.  An hour later, the bones lay in a pile
near the center of the carnage.In the meantime, the lich had been
assembling the various body parts strewn about into a bloody mass of living
flesh and gore.

The flesh golem now moved, oozing and squishing, towards the
pile and clumsily picked it up.Rasst lay on the ground motionless nearby,
emotionally and phsyically exhausted, praying to the spirits for death.The
lich turned to leave, golem in tow, but almost as an afterthought, he lifted
his bony finger in the air and twirled it.  Like dog on a leash, Rasst was
jerked to his feet and forced to attention.  "Now then," intoned the lich,
"there is a certain ruin I want to visit in this forsaken swamp, a temple
where during the Month of the Winter Wolf, the sun will illuminate the
farth-", the lich droned on.  It continued to discuss the various nuances of
the Theran Calendar and the vessel by which his almighty Lord would be
summoned to this plane and the overwhelmingly massive number of different
sufferings Thera would face (a list the lich had alphabetized them for the
listeners' pleasure).  Of course, none of this mattered to Rasst, and so by
the time the lich had reached "Misery by Maleficent Menstruation of Magma",
Rasst was now two swamps away.

Reborn

Added Sat Apr 16 18:36:10 2011 at level 23:

Rasst ran until he could run no more, then he collapsed to the ground in a
heap.  Some say he slept for weeks, others, mere minutes.  What all
swampdwellers who came to watch this spectacle can agree on is that, when he
awoke, he was not the same fela that scampered through the muck for fun only
a day before.  His eyes now glowed a dark citrine, and behind his icy stare
was a being full of anger, rage, and suffering.There would be no more rest,
no play, only destruction.  It was time to train.  Soon, the twisters of
nature, the shacklers of man, they would all know the law of the swamp.In
the end, everything turns to muck.  Some things just get to the bottom a
little faster.

From Kitten to Cat

Rasst poked the recently deceased necromancer that he had chased down and
slain beneath an elm with his still-bloody spear, half expecting the bones to
rise up and weave their dark magic on him, like the Lich that he had faced
years ago.  Instead, its arm came apart from its body and flopped to the
ground.Rasst recoiled in fear, as he knew powerful necromancers were known
to hurl their limbs at unsuspecting foes, and that life and death were never
clear when dealing with the necromantic arts.  Instead, the arm just sat
there, rotting away.  A vulture landed and started pecking at the thumb.  As
he realized the mortality of the dark wizard, his apprehension was washed
away, and a cold wave of hate surged over him.  He had thought the killing
would alleviate some of the painful memories that still echoed around his
brain, but instead the killing had made them more vivid than ever.  The
anguished screams of his friends still rang through his head like a clarion
call!  The anger swelled up within him, and for once, he felt powerful - gone
was the scared little felar who wilted under the gaze of the Lich - here was
a true predator, ready to become both champion and terror of the wilds....


The hulking giant grabbed his chest in agony, trying to staunch the blood
from his pierced heart, then fell down face first into the swamp.  Rasst
collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.  A mixture of blood and sweat pooled
on Rasst's chest, as he lay flat on his back wrapping his wounds with a
mixture of tree bark, mud, and leaves.  Rasst had waited nearly a month for
his prey, knowing that this particular fire giant, for use in his dark arts,
favored a particular sort of mushroom found only in this swamp.His defeated
foe lay face down in a shallow bog, blood still oozing from deep gouges in
his back made by razor-sharp claws.  Defiler after defiler had fallen to his
spear, but yet, Rasst's anger and hatred for them only grew with each passing
victory.  Rasst would destroy them all.He would honor Thar-Eris with the
majesty of his hunt.  And the Ancients would honor him with the mantle of
Nightreaver.  All this he knew to be true, in time.  The ever-patient hunter
would be patient once more.  Rasst dismantled the remnants of the snare so as
not to trap a stray animal, and headed towards the Tree.
