Description

A dainty man stands here. There's no better word to describe him. He's petite and finely dressed, with elaborately coiffed hair in ringlets down to his shoulders. More of his brown hair is pulled back into a delicate ponytail down to the center of his back. His hands are well manicured and largely without calluses as far as you can see. Not overly muscular (dainty, you recall), and rather short, for a human, his movements are nonetheless quick and precise. His face is rather handsome, or would be to some, you suppose, with sharp dark eyes and a full set of shining white teeth. When he opens his mouth to reveal those teeth, though, you note a rather malodorous smell. Looking closer at the rest of his face, you see he is unshaven and somewhat dirty. It is as if he cares just enough to keep his hair and clothing neat, but only so far. As you take in the rest of him, it strikes you that the awful smell from his mouth is liquor and bad breath.

Role

Upbringing and Sarrah

Added Tue Apr 22 23:43:41 2014 at level 13:
Resdrenn is the son of wealthy upbringing. He led an indolent lifestyle while
growing up. Servants to take care of his whims, private instructors to bore him
to extremes with all of their lessons and maundering political, economical, and
social commentary.

Despite his best efforts, however, some of what his parents wanted him to learn
managed to seep in. He had a mostly good heart - lazy, unmotivated to help others,
but knowing right from wrong and generally wanting to do the right thing. He also
became fair of speech and knowledgable about the world. That last was the main
thing that interested him in his studies - Theran lore and geography.

Still, Resdrenn felt rather alone. The crushing weight of his parents' expectations
bore down on him, and life seemed pointless. Everything was already decided for him,
or so it seemed - he would grow up, inherit his family's money, and carry on their
legacy. His life's story had already been written.

In fact, the only thing that brought any sense of joy or purpose to Resdrenn's life
was the time he spent with his younger sister. A prodigy at an early age, Sarrah was
selected to attend a very prestigious school in a far-away land. Her abilities were
nothing short of miraculous, said the recruiters who came. She could meld the divine
with mystical energies. It was nearly unheard of. But she lacked control. She would
learn, they said. Learn with them. When she returned, they said, Resdrenn and his
parents would not recognize her.

That should have been a warning sign to them.

Missing Sister

Added Wed Apr 23 00:26:29 2014 at level 14:
The missives started simply enough. Classes were strange but exciting.
She got lonely sometimes, but everyone was very nice to her, and she felt
very welcome and appreciated. She was learning a great deal.

The missives began to slow. Then nearly stop completely. His parents sent word
to the institute, inquiring after her. They were told not to worry, she was merely
so busy learning new things that she hadn't had time. Letters started to come again,
in fits and starts, but they were...different. Even Resdrenn's parents noticed that
Sarrah's...tone...seemed different. Bleak, at times. The last one they received
was an apology from her - she would not be able to come home for their annual Feastday
celebration, her studies were too deep and too important to her to stop now. She hoped
they would understand. She would write again when she was able, but for now, the
holy and mystical energies she was learning to shape were so wonderful. Be happy
for me, her letter implored.

Her parents set about at once, with plans to visit the Institute and get to the
bottom of things. The caravan they took was assaulted enroute. No survivors. The
stewards that had been left with Resdrenn in their care had an investigation performed,
but there was no conclusive word on what had happened. Only that the caravan had
been ripped to pieces. And that both divine and mystical energy residues remained.

On the run

Added Wed Apr 23 23:18:55 2014 at level 17:
The loss of his parents, coupled with the strange events surrounding Sarrah,
drove Resdrenn into a somber isolation. He would frequently take long walks
away from the manor, easily eluding those who had been appointed as his guardians.

It was on his way back from one of these walks that he caught a whiff of smoke in
the air. Quickening his step, he soon saw what he had feared. The manor and the
outlying buildings were all ablaze. Wounded servants were being carried by others,
while some attempted in futility to battle the flames.

Resdrenn realized that it was intended, and likely assumed, that he was dead now.
He crept close enough to hear some of the servants lamenting him. His riches, his
entire life, had been ripped away from him. Surely it involved his sister, somehow.

From that point on, the boy became Resdrenn, his old name left behind, and began a
new life, looking over his shoulder at every turn.

After two years of running, he was out of options. Joining the Academy was an act
of desperation. He had heard of a place called the Fortress of Light. Perhaps there
would be safety there. And perhaps aid. And maybe, just perhaps...answers?

Joining the Brigade

Added Sat May 3 23:33:20 2014 at level 31:
After aiding a relatively inexperienced Squire retrieve the radiant crystal
Orb from the Scarabite temple, Resdrenn found himself inducted into the Fortress
as a Squire himself. The Lady had seen fit to bring him in, in the absence of both
a Marshall and Captain.

Resdrenn found himself rather purposeless. His days consisted of hunting the wicked,
training when the wicked were nowhere to be found, and performing other Squire duties
such as interviewing other potential Squires. The Fortress library held nothing of
value in his search for his sister. He heard whispers, however, of additional tomes
that were made available to Maran and Acolytes. And still more made available
to the Elders of the Fortress - Captain, Marshall, Cardinal, and Elder Prophet.

Perhaps out of the unchanged ways of a selfish, spoiled rich boy, or perhaps
because of love for his sister...or even perhaps because it was the right thing
to do...Resdrenn decided to redouble his efforts to purge the wicked and become
a Maran, and perhaps eventually, a leader. He knew he was not ready and would not
be for some time. But eventually....

Interlude

Added Sat May 3 23:48:46 2014 at level 31:
I remember the night vividly.

I was crouched, attempting to stay in the shadow of an old, abandoned
wagon on the side of the road. The bandits I was hiding from were not
stupid, however. They would inspect the wagon, and I would be gutted.

I remember the fear, twisting my gut into knots. "So much for the great
crusade to find my sister." I thought bitterly. "Ended in a pool of blood
on the side of a road that nobody has used in years, over a bag of twenty
copper."

I was already wounded, and my fighting skills were meager to non-
existent back then, so fighting them was not an option. They were
searching methodically. I remember having a glimmer of hope when
one of them called out that his feet hurt and he wanted an ale.

Perhaps they would give up the search, realizing I had nothing they
wanted, and turn around?

The torch nearest me stopped it's search for a moment and started
moving away. Then a voice like a lumberyard foreman called "I don't
care if yer feet fall off, Hagsmarg! Keep lookin' until ye find the
wretch!" The torch resumed it's pattern.

My heart sank. The leader of the bandits would find me in minutes.
I readied myself, planning to try to stick him with my tiny knife
and make a run for it, though I knew there was nowhere to go.

His torch grew closer, until my shadows were nearly gone. He had
to know I was there, but he kept a methodical pace. Just then,
his torch went out.

Thunder boomed, seemingly from nowhere. What had been a well-lit
night became dark as pitch, as clouds rolled in swiftly and covered
the full moon. Rain started coming down in sheets and torrents. The
abandoned wagon offered only a little protection from this sudden gale,
but I drank in the wind and rain as if it were pure ambrosia from the
Heavens. Perhaps it was.

Even the heartiest of bandits wanted no part of being out in that any longer,
and so it was that I survived.

That is the first of many times in my life that a sudden storm has struck
near me, and nearly every time has saved me in one way or another. I do not
understand, but I do not feel I need to.

As Resdrenn finished his tale, the Acolyte chuckled and shook her head.

"If you say so, Squire. I still think it is foolish to stand out in the rain
like a ninny. But it is your life. Just do not come crying to me if you catch
your death of cold!"

Interlude 2

Added Sun May 11 22:16:33 2014 at level 34:
"My father was...exceptionally gifted. His mental capacity and his
ability with magic was legendary. He had made a name for himself,
and soon his services commanded gold in extraordinary amounts.

Mother, on the other hand, made no money, and what little she did
come across went almost solely to the poor. She was as devout and
spiritual as my father was gifted. It is said her touch alone could
heal the worst injuries short of death. Some even spoke of the dead
themselves raised up by her. She took no credit, of course, and said
it was the power of the Gods, not her, that aided those poor folk.

How the two of them met and settled to have children is not the point
of this story, nor am I attempting to boast about my lineage. In fact
I was born with absolutely no magical ability, nor any sort of 'divine
conduit' in my soul.

No the point of this story is to tell you that compared to my sister,
mother and father were pebbles to a boulder. She was born with the
spark, magic flowed through her as if she had come through the Veil
herself. And divine power as well. She healed a five-year-old scar
on a chambermaid the first time she had one of her 'episodes'. She
was three months old.

The episodes were the problem. As wonderous as she was, my sister was
completely unable to control her abilities. Mother and father were
able to keep the worst...contained...after a fashion. But it was no
permanent solution. That is when the recruiters came."

"Ah yes, you've told me a bit about them. What do you think they did
to your sister, Resdrenn?"

Resdrenn lifted his gaze from the floor and looked into the eyes of
the Acolyte.

"I'm afraid they've turned her into a weapon. A terrible weapon. Gods
help us all if I am right."

Maran

Added Fri May 16 08:34:52 2014 at level 42:
Resdrenn finds himself in the role of a Maran of the Fortress. In much the same
way he joined the Fortress in the first place, there was no ceremony, no grand
speeches - just the way Resdrenn preferred. Instead, it was a simple bit of the
Lady Baerinika taking note of something. What exactly that "something" was...
Resdrenn wasn't certain. Competency perhaps? Wisdom? Skill? Empathy?

At any rate, now he had the mantle of the Maran, and the associated responsibility
to go along with it. And, he made note of, access to more tomes in the Brigade's library.
And that realization brought another. It hit Resdrenn rather square in the forehead.

He was no longer doing this just to find his sister.

He sat down suddenly when it dawned on him. He'd always been ready to strike down the wicked,
yes, but it had always been secondary to his goal of finding his sister - or at least finding
out what had been done to her.

Now...now he realized what a selfish goal that had been. He still wanted to find her, help her...
but he could not let that be his primary motivation any longer. What good was saving one girl,
even his sister, if the rest of the world fell to the darkness?

Standing with a new dedication, he concentrated intensely and brought a bright silver broadsword
into his hands in a blaze of light. A grim determination crept into his face, and he strode
out of the Hall of Light, to find some way of bringing more Light to this world.

Marshall

Added Thu Jun 12 22:35:50 2014 at level 51:
"I am in need of a Marshall, Maran. Do you believe you are fit for the job?"
"I do, Lady."

With that exchange, Resdrenn finds himself as one of the mortal leaders
of the Fortress of Light. Honored, humbled, he seeks to prove that he
is indeed worthy of the mantle of responsibility.

The duties seem to come naturally. He'd already been showing the more
inexperienced squires of more advanced ways of protecting themselves beyond
the abilities afforded to them by the radiant crystal orb. He'd shown
many squires and scribes the paths to various secluded places, and
shared much of his experience, gained from his formative years of life
on the run.

Now he finds himself fostering the even more inexperienced, such as
some of the squire applicants. One of them did not even know how to
find the center of town in Arkham. Challenges. Additional duties.

But he has not forgotten his sister, nor will he ever. The final
new thing to come with the title of Marshall is access to the Elder's
Section of the Fortress Library. And there, he found a tome of ancient,
largely useless, knowledge. Within its pages was a small tidbit. Possibly
nothing.

Or possibly everything.

Sarrah, Found and Lost, Part I

Added Tue Jun 17 21:35:59 2014 at level 51:
The trip was...well, arduous just wasn't even in it. Bogs filled
with violent beasts (and worse smells), ruins that teemed with undead,
wicked groups of bandits, forests filled with razorweed and worse...
and that was just the first few days past the eastern boundary of the
Mapped World.

All of those dangers had been accounted for - if not precisely, in some variant
or another. It was a week's travel or more until something more sinister
revealed itself. And while that first bit was bad enough to shake the
soul of most men, it was only the start. By the end, the change
had come, and the drinking had started. A changed man. A harder man.

Sarrah, Found and Lost, Part II

Added Tue Jun 17 21:51:41 2014 at level 51:
There had been a small village there, at one point. Or so it seemed,
anyway. The surrounding environs were relatively well tended, with
a lack of thick forest growth and even some rudimentary trails.

The trails meandered this way and that, but all seemed relatively
centered around the location of the oddity.

And an oddity it was, and no other name could be conjured to describe
it. A hollowed-out half-sphere, perfectly round at the edges, five
storm giants across. At one point it must have been smooth-walled,
though the dirt along the edges had begun to settle and pool at the
bottom. Rains had come and gone, too, and so the bottom had a small
amount of standing water as well.

It looked as if one of the gods had fashioned a giant rounded scoop
and had dipped into the land there as if needing a dollop of butter
for some fantastical flapjack.

A few hours further travel revealed the beginning of the bodies.

Sarrah, Found and Lost, Part III

Added Sat Jun 21 23:22:25 2014 at level 51:
Bodies technically, though "remains" or "bits of sinew, flesh, and bone" would
be a more accurate term. Most likely it was what was left of the inhabitants of
the scooped-up dome-village a few hours back.

They'd been...scattered. Almost as if used as decorative pieces in some sort
of unholy festival. Strewn from trees, propped up in all manner of position,
piled and stacked to form macabre pillars. It was ghastly.

There were more things like that along the way. Worse things. Too abominable to
describe. At last, however, the journey bore the fruit of revelation:
The Academy.

On the surface, it seemed relatively "normal." As normal as something like
a pristine building in a vast well-kept clearing in the midst of a foul marsh
can be considered, at any rate.

Exploration of the facility was fruitless, however. It's hallways were clean,
neat, and devoid of life, sentient or no. A more in-depth search, over the course
of a few hours, finally revealed a hidden passageway.

And beyond it, Sarrah.

Sarrah, Found and Lost, Part IV

Added Tue Jun 24 22:32:42 2014 at level 51:
The creature was recognizable as Sarrah, but only by unnatural means. The right side
of it sprouted angelic wings, though tattered and gray. The left side was a thick
sort of demon-scale wing. Both wings held the creature aloft perfectly, however, as it
hovered there. A slow, rhythmic flapping swept forth a fetid odor, like the smell of
diseased, rotting flesh in a hot, enclosed space.

Mystical energy crackled around the abomination. Sarrah's gifts for Magic and Divine had
certainly manifested strongly. Hideously, grotesquely, strongly.

The details of the battle aren't important to recount here. It involved a great deal of
near death, and eventually a dagger plunged directly into the throat of the unholy beast
that had once been Sarrah Smythington.

Later that day, the drinking started.

Resdrenn after Sarrah

Added Tue Jun 24 22:43:04 2014 at level 51:
Resdrenn is lost. He puts forth the sham of being Marshall, but feels just that -
a sham. He's taken to drinking at inappropriate times, in inappropriate amounts.

He has become more bloodthirsty and petty, as well as vengeful. He hates the gods,
though he is not foolish enough to disrespect them and draw their ire. He blames
them for what happened to his family and his life. Deep down he knows they are not
to blame, and bad things just happen, but having to kill his own sister, the last
of his family, has driven him over that razor's edge that a Maran must walk.

The Scribe Corwyn has done all he can to bring Resdrenn around, but it is as if
Resdrenn is...reveling in his state. He wallows in it. Until he wants to be helped,
he won't be. He's become unkempt, flippant, and no small degree of irritating to
those he fights with and against.

Worst of all might be his change of stance on those who follow the grey path. Before,
he considered them misguided. Now, once they have performed any wicked act, he
simply lumps them in with the wicked, intending to see them as dead as the rest
of those who are not "pure of heart."

If only he could see himself clearly, he might put himself in that same category.
