Description
Looking to be about five feet seven inches tall, this lean woman
seems to be a rather ordinary human. With her black eyes, short
brown hair and rather unpretentious clothing, only her stance
seems somewhat unusual. She seems to be flowing even when still,
like a river in constant motion. Even asleep, it does seem she
would be on her feet and jumping within a second.
No visible tattoos are shown on her exposed skin and the build
seems to be quite ordinary, no bulging muscles albeit she
does seem to be rather fit. No one would call her a beauty despite
regular features of her face due to the rather menacing look
hidden deep in her eyes. Or maybe due to the unnerving
smooth movement as she shifts with the sun and the shadows.
Role
The toils of mediocrity
Added Sat Aug 20 20:22:49 2016 at level 1:
In all her sixteen years, Rettia struggled to overcome her rather
pronounced mediocrity. Both her parents, a leather maker and a
homemaker, were nothing special. Her older brother, now a helper
to his father, an apprentice leather maker, never strived to be
anything different and just slipped into the assumed role in life.
Rettia wanted to be something more than just be married off to some
boring artisan or, if lucky, a lesser lord. She always wanted to
escape, but with nothing in the way of special gifts or skills, that
seemed to be impossible. Especially disgusting was the ease with which
the students of the magic arts can flicker the light between their
fingers off and on, not to say of more difficult spells. She never
had "the spark" or ability to channel magic as was discovered during
the regular magic test sponsored by the Galadon Invoker guild.
With no physical special abilities, even training rather hard at it,
she could never build any muscles, even after a rigorous year of
training under her retired uncle who used to be a guardsman.
He even went as far as saying that she'd never be of any use in battle,
even to save her life, and gave up to go back to leisure drinking.
The only noticeable skill she had is seemingly to go completely
unnoticed, perhaps due to her completely usual looks and stature.
While treating it with contempt, Rettia nonetheless decided to take
advantage of the only advantage and, in secret from her parents, went
to train to the Galadon thief guild to see if they need a young student.
There she discovered that indeed, her calling is in staying completely
mediocre so that anyone would discount her and dismiss from their mind
or not notice her presence at all in the first place. Practicing at the
market, she never ran out of fresh fruit. Her favorite trick, however,
was to sneak up on a solemn guard and tie his shoelaces together.
Still hating herself, even at war with herself, she decided to use the
opportunity to overcome her challenges as best she could and set out
from her home on the path of more rigorous study of the arts of thieving
and sneaky fighting that perhaps could lend her the opportunity to
become less mediocre over time. Indeed, she would even try to present
herself as overly intimidating to hide the fact she's nothing special.
Rettia's last name
Added Sat Sep 10 22:32:59 2016 at level 13:
As most things about her, Rettia behated true last name was Lederer.
Of course, that does not sound remotely interesting at all, and, gladly,
most of the people would not know a difference if she shortened it to
a much more appealing Ledere. That sounds foreign instead of boring.
Also, if anyone who knows her overhears, it still sounds the same.
The slow overcoming of nothingness

It was dark in the city of Voralian on a moonless night.
Only the cries of the scared commoners were heard as a fire giant warrior and the drow
invoker slayed them in cold blood.
I had to be careful as I followed them around, for the warrior was a big muscling guy.
Should he notice me, I'd be bashed against the wall and dead from the swing of his axe.
The invoker, however, looked rather frail and if I could get him alone, well, I had a chance.
Waiting for my moment, I stayed in the shadows.
The night over, the day has begun, making the job more difficult.
But then the warrior must have realized that his guildmaster would be proud of his kills.
He went to his guild, leaving invoker behind for just a second.
Striking quickly, I slid my leg behind his before he can become invisible.
And just four slashes of my quick sword later, he was a cold corpse.
The warrior ran out to help, but all he could see was a shadow against the guild walls.
Slowly, but surely, Rettia started to overcome her fears and sharpened her knife
on the throats of others, targeting mages most of all as they seemed powerful
previously, but turned out to be not much of anything when striken quickly.
The war within her not quite over, but a battle has been won. And more than one.
The abject mediocrity
Added Thu Oct 13 19:21:18 2016 at level 26:
The Rites were held, where Rettia expressed utter inability to perform anything,
much less impress anyone with her mediocre abilities.
In all her battles, even when she had a plan, her below-par combat
abilities did not allow her to execute on that plan. Everyone else
was simply better, stronger, more prepared, can hit harder,
defend herself with conviction, strike more quickly, and just
generally outclassed Rettia all the way.
Very embarassed and hating herself even more, Rettia steeled her
will not to commit suicide then and there and resolved to work much
harder to become at least on par with the other villagers.
One day will come, some day, when she will be worthy to participate in the Rites.
Maybe.
The unexpected honor
Added Mon Dec 5 23:25:45 2016 at level 51:
Rettia was perhaps the weakest at the Rites, as quite expected.
Failing the wire at every single fight she had, she lost them all.
However, what she found herself needing to do is to call on all to unite and
defeat an unexpected lich who decided to show up at the Rites.
It was the right thing to do at the time and reckoning of it plus a few
timely wires in a group fight were probably the reason why she was chosen.
That was certainly unexpected and while a bit more sure of herself, Rettia
is still trying to hide hard that she is still weaker than most and hating herself
for it. Still a bit torn with herself and hating being at war with her soul,
she reckoned to gain advice of Jormyr, who knows of War the best.
