Description
The hooded human man before you looks rough around the edges.
He moves with a brazen swagger his well defined muscles taut
beneath his toned and bronzed skin. Every inch of exposed
skin is covered in what appears to be a tattooed rune, glyph,
or fresh scar. His head is completely shaved. The shorn areas
being covered with the jagged lines, and concentric circles of
an intricate network of tattoos. His face would be considered
handsome, but for a series of vicious looking white scars which
detract from his good looks, but adds intrigue to his overall
appearance. An assortment of silks, and leathers comprise the
bulk of the protections adorning his strong frame and seem to
have been tailored for comfort.
Role
Early Life
Added Wed Dec 1 19:51:18 2021 at level 1:
Grew up in Voralian to a city guard, and a simple
simple serving girl. They were lovely people. Good
of heart, and compassionate to those in need. A
solid foundation for a boy like me. My father took
time to teach me his craft, and letting me help him
upkeep his armor, and weapons. Childhood was simple
and pleasurable for a time. Some days he would let
me walk around the city with him. Meeting the good
people, and looking at all the shops. Sometimes
we'd even go up on the docks and look at all the
fishermen with their fresh catches. He would also
take the time to point out important people to me.
He told me of the Fortress of Light, and showed me
real acolytes and maran as they walked the streets
of our beloved city. Real heroes. Good men and
Women that safeguarded those with good hearts.
My fathers schedule gave him the flexibility to
meet up with my mother at her work and escort her
home after dark. It was a night like this that
they were set on in the streets by Brigands and
Thieves. It was that very night that my whole
life changed.
Darker Years
Added Wed Dec 1 19:53:46 2021 at level 1:
At the loss of both of my parents, I was to be
shipped off to balator to live in an orphanage.
Having no other family that I knew of, there
were few options for me other than this, and the
Captain of my fathers guard said this was the
standard protocol for children bereft of parents.
I agreed to go, but in my heart I couldn't leave
the city my parents had raised me in too. I fled
the caravan on the eastern road, and made my way
back to Voralian city. It was here that I learned
of the seedier underbelly of such a pristine city.
I ran with other urchins, learned how to survive
on the streets. Nothing major. A pie from a
window sill. A pair of trousers from a clothes
line. Simple things that helped me survive.
I came to realize that the streets I grew up in
were not as safe as I once thought. The wicked
of Heart would slaughter shopkeepers, guards and
children almost on a daily basis. The alleys
and taverns were stuffed full of those who sought
to take advantage of those less fortunate. That
had to change. I knew I could be the one to do
that.
Azorinne
Added Wed Dec 1 19:57:30 2021 at level 1:
It was on a simple fishing trip with a couple of
other urchins that I found the broken stairway.
It was a daunting thought to be under the gaze of
such a pure being. I spent days hoping I did not
offend her with my petty theft. I spent weeks
pondering about what my life could be like serving
her tenets. Surely I could do such a thing, and I
could also clean up the streets of voralian city in
service to her.
Religion had never been a purpose in my life. Now
though, I could feel it calling to me. I will
learn more about her tenets, and see where I can
serve within the ranks of her religion.
Simple goals for a simple man
Added Wed Dec 1 19:59:06 2021 at level 1:
My goals are simple, at least for now. I will
join the fortress. My father spoke highly of
the Maran, and from what I've seen their goals
align with my own.
I will make an honest attempt at becoming the
leader of the Voralian City thieves guild. The
rot in the underbelly of the city will better
be fought with the backing of an organization
like that guild. Spy networks and enforcers
pointed in a more positive direction.
I will explore my relationship with the Lady
Azorinne. Her tenets touch my heart, and I will
spend time reflecting on them so that I might
serve her in a more formal manner.
An Awakening Faith
Added Sat Dec 11 15:42:55 2021 at level 26:
It is instinctual at this point in our lives. People
know in their hearts that things grow better in the
light than in the dark. Through the teachings of
Azorinne it is possible for a broken and fractured
people to live as a restored and unified community,
maturing into a new humanity in her grace, a divine
reflection of her character as Azorinne's holy people
The nourishing goodness we innately hunger for grows
in the open, in the community of justice and mercy,
not hidden in the dark where people connive injustice
and spin lies to gain power. Azorinne's light blesses
Thar-Eris(Thera) with fruitfulness, but the world has
been less than productive because of the darkness.
This is why I hunt. To cull back that darkness, so
that her light might thrive. So that her children
may flourish. So that good may know fruitfulness.
We are not being asked to investigate the works of
evil, or to publish critiques of the darkness. That
would be a waste of effort(fruitless). We would be
focused on the shame of the darkness instead of the
glory of the Lady. No, we expose those works of dark-
ness as fruitless and shameful simply by being the
alternative, being the brightness of Azorinne's
productive presence in this world.
The War between Light and Darkness
Added Sat Dec 11 15:47:48 2021 at level 26:
People hear war and they view this fight as something physical.
Clashes of blade on axe, blood in the fields and streets. It
is so much more though. The conflict between light and darkness
rages on so many levels it is hard for mortal minds to fathom.
To be victorious in a war, one must win not only the strategic
resources, and territory of an opponent, but they must win the
hearts, minds, and spirits of the people.
I look at it like that old proverb I heard from a traveling bard.
The proverb of the pebble in a pond-
If a pebble gets dropped into a pond, small ripples run out from
it. In most circumstances, the ripple runs out of energy and
dissipate over time and distance. The pond remains the same.
But every now in then, with a little bit of Azorinne's grace,
a pebble drops in. A ripple runs out, and it meets with another
ripple. The two meet, and they grow together. Another ripple
joins in, and then another. Pretty soon a large swell is growing
in an serene setting, and you find yourself suddenly going some-
where, perhaps quite unexpectedly.
I share this because in our daily lives, Maran tend to focus on
the war one dimensionally. The sword on axe example from before.
But the squire texts demonstrate the wisdom of elders past in
listening to our Acolyte brethren, because sometimes words and
deeds win battles, hearts, and minds better than blades. When
I say a kind word, or grant a small mercy it is a ripple in a
sometimes serene, sometimes turbulent setting. I can see the
ripple form before me, but what happens beyond that is only for
the gods to know.
Acts of kindness - Food for the starving, a gift given to needy
children, a kind word. All of these are weapons to be used in
the fight against the darkness. Granting those mercies on the
ones who need them, and on those under our power, be they
friend or foe can create an effect, and amplify the power and
reach of the light into places we have perhaps never seen before.
Perhaps even a Path to Redemption.
The Path to Redemption
Added Sat Dec 11 15:52:57 2021 at level 26:
I have spoken to many of my maran brethren over the course of
my tenure in the fortress thus far. Many of them seem single-
minded in their devotion to bringing about an end to the wicked.
I know this path is bloody. I know the line I walk between the
light and the darkness is a narrow one. I believe in my heart
though that there are more than one path to the victory we
seek. I was awoken to this thought through a running battle
I had over the course of a number of days with a dark-elven
transmuter named Wumriu. First blood was drawn by me. I saw
the complexion of his skin, the nature of his heritage and I
struck. It was a pitched battle that he soon fled. Though
when he returned he was prepared for the fight. It was my
turn to flee.
This battle took place over a number of days. No victor,
and only pain and suffering being the ultimate takeaway
from this fight. I had to change my tactics. But, how.
How do I win a fight against a foe as slippery as this.
I did the unexpected. I apologized for striking him. I
think it took him aback, as he was uncertain how to
proceed. He asked what brought about this change. In
reflection of my own actions, I told him that I judged
him based off his heritage without actually knowing
through. I walk this path because one way or the other, he
will be brought to justice. Either he will accept my offer,
or I will bring the judgment of the light down upon him and
he will be forced to stand before Azorinne for true judgment.
I say this because as I fight this war, I need to fight it
in a way that does not harm me physically, mentally or in
the worst case, spiritually. This much blood, and this
much violence must be tempered with reflection and with
heart so that I can live with myself for the actions I must
pursue. I don't know if this is the right path, and taking
the time to speak to some of those around me leads me to
believe that it is not. I do know, however, that I can live
with myself if this mercy is granted to those I fight. If
all I do is kill, and kill, and kill, what does that gain me?
What does that gain the light? Nothing but more blood. The
cycle is broken with the offer of redemption. The anger that
builds with each defeat settles less on those we slay, and in
the end, if they accept? Does this not strength the light as
well? A victory is a victory, whether it is perpetrated by
words or blades. The light grows in strength, and one less
vile being is there to threaten the lives of the innocent.
No, the Path to Redemption isnt just a call for ethical beha-
vior. Its a call to embody the brilliance of Lady Azorinne's
teachings.
A Vow in the Light
Added Sat Dec 11 15:54:32 2021 at level 26:
My vow is simple. The absolute preservation of the light.
Though as I studied the texts of the maran and the acolytes
I came to realize that this was considered their vow as well.
I just had never thought of it in that context. Though
perhaps with further reflection I just made that vow in my
heart and followed through with it by joining the ranks of
the Maran. Just remember though, that being a crusader for
the light does not prevent me from being a good man. I can
do things other than shed the blood of the wicked. Random
acts of kindness and other thoughtful expressions of can
bring about victory for the light as well. I will not lose
my way.
Tenet of Judgment
Added Sat Dec 11 15:57:53 2021 at level 26:
This tenet has always been the easiest for me. We as people
tend to judge on a daily basis. Be it as simple as whether
we're going to eat that moldy food found in an alley, or a
tougher judgment on whether we're going to strike that foe,
or engage in that fight. I've always had a knack for making
those decisions, for staying objective when forming a solid
opinion. I also like to think I have good sense in my judg-
ments, especially in matters affecting action. Lately though
I've been running into various situations that have caused
me to reflect and rethink about the way I apply my actions
and opinions as I prosecute this war against the darkness.
I will continue to try to fashion my beliefs wisely, and
I will attempt to remain objective in the judgments I form.
Tenet of Justice
Added Sat Dec 11 15:59:01 2021 at level 26:
I have a decent understanding of Justice. Though I think
I need more experience with it before I can form a truly
objective opinion. I will continue to fashion my thoughts
and opinions on how this is to be dispensed as I progress
down this path with the maran.
Though in the meantime, I will continue to admnister what
I think is the proper Justice for any given situation I
come across.
The Tenet of Mercy
Added Sat Dec 11 16:02:20 2021 at level 26:
This concept at first was foreign to me even though as I
spent time reflecting on it, I cam to realize I was the
subject of mercy in my youth. As mentioned above, it was
simple acts of kindness when I was a child on the streets
that gave me hope for the future. I was someone else's
ripple, that through the grace of Lady Azorinne joined
other ripples, and am now flowing into a unexpected place.
Small mercies have shaped the man I have become. Through
those mercies I can now enact others onto the world, be
they acts of kindness, forgiveness, or the staying of a
blade while in the midst of conflict. I will continue
to study this tenet in an attempt to better myself as
not just a maran, but more importantly as a man.
We strive to be the Lady's vessels. I will continue to
spread and maintain the Light to the best of my ability.
Wumriu's Rejection
Added Sun Dec 12 09:11:44 2021 at level 28:
The offer for redemption was given. As was time.
Wumriu has soundly denied the offer by taking
the imperial oath. That path is closed to him
now. I will focus on destroying his earthly body
now, and his soul will stand before the Lady for
Judgment now. My heart is at peace with this.
A Meeting with Lady Azorinne
Added Sun Jan 2 21:00:00 2022 at level 51:
I finally did it! I finally got the nerve up to seek
out my Lady. It was wonderful. Inspirational. It was
just what I needed to find the courage to continue on
my path as one of her vessels. We spoke a great deal
about the different facets of her religion, and I put
my fears to rest about not being able to speak with any
authority on some of those subjects. We had a couple
of interesting folk stop by too, and listen to our talk.
I can only hope that they came away from it a bit more
enlightened than they did before. I am a fool for not
having approached her sooner, but as she said herself-
Faith finds people when they need it most. She has
truly set my heart afire with the possibilities for
the future, and I will do everything I can to spread
word of her.
The Emperor of Thera
Added Sun Jan 2 21:03:28 2022 at level 51:
A more foul being I've never met. It shames me to
admit though, that in a face to face confrentation
with this thing, I am nearly useless. I don't say
this out of cowardice or fear. I say this simply
because when I look at my efforts objectively, I
simply have great trouble standing against his dark
power. So for this I will play to my strengths. I
seem to have the most effect against him when I turn
to my thieving trade. As such, I will focus less on
standing toe to toe with him, and more on cleaning
out his pouches when possible. I think he can see
me when I am cloaked in shadows, but I am uncertain
as to how well. I will have to test this, and take
some time to forewarn my brethren in the brigade and
hall of light that I will be focusing more on taking
his resources, than actually stepping to fight him.
If I can deplete his wands from his pouches, I can
strengthen our casters with them. If I can take those
disgusting embalmed body parts from him, he can no
longer use them to destroy my fellows. I think this
can work. I will be a thorn to his palm, and a
bramble to his feet. I can weaken him so that those
better suited to direct confrontation will have more
success in future fighting.
The Hearts and Minds Initiative
Added Sun Jan 2 21:08:03 2022 at level 51:
I am going to focus some of my time on winning the
hearts and minds of the good folk of Thera. They
have been preyed upon by countless dark warriors,
brigands, and practitioners of dark magic. I seek
a way to create good will for the fortress. That way
when this war is won someday, the people can know and
trust us. So that when a Maran or Acolyte walk the
streets, the children know that they have a protector
in their midst. This very feeling had a profound
impact on me as a young urchin in the streets of
Voralian city. I would do what I can to see this
feeling continue for my brothers and sisters in the
light. More on this to come.
The Hearts and Minds Initiative continued
Added Sun Jan 23 14:23:57 2022 at level 51:
A long forgotten front to our war, the people have suffered
in ways we have taken for granted. Their cities burn, their
parents and children die to senseless violence, and what is
supposed to be a peaceful and prosperous existence is often
upended by acts of cruelty and despair. They are preyed upon
almost daily with their homes and livlihoods being threated
and yet they persevere. They pick themselves back up and
through a strength seldom seen in this world, they begin to
put their lives back together one step at a time. The hearts
and minds initiative is a way to help with this. Our primary
goals have always been the utter preservation of the Light.
Though the paths of our two organizations vary in the ways
we prosecute this, the end result is always without question.
I fear we have become so focused on our war, that we have
neglected our most important battlefront. The People. With
this in mind, we start a recurring theme in the Fortress,
where we will go out amongst the people. Spreading good
will and cheer in the simple hopes of letting them know
that somebody cares for their plight. We see their homes
destroyed, and we hear their cries of anguish and pain at
the loss of their families and friends. We carry with us
the burden of that loss so that they don't have to do it
alone. We will provide hope to the masses, and create
good will among the people. For often times it is our
blades they see flash in their streets, and though our
motives are pure and righteous. A faceless blade can also
cause fear. This initiative will help the people to know
their protectors. To put a face behind those blades, so
that they understand our purpose for employing them, and
they can ultimately trust that they have an ally in us.
The Elder Prophet
Added Sun Jan 23 14:24:55 2022 at level 51:
I fear her grief over the Captains death is all consuming.
She has made statements, and performed actions that have
caused me great concern in the near past. I understand
that grief shapes us into new beings as we experience it,
but it is another facet of this war we fight whose burden
we must learn to bear. She has always been my rock. An
example of a good and kind person that I've always looked
up to. I know Captain Vlijerous was a guiding force for
her, but I don't think she knows that she is that for me.
I want to help her with her grief, but I don't know how.
I will try to talk to her about it. Help her however I
I can. My hope is that she can learn to carry this grief
the way Maran do, and perhaps over time it will not be so
debilitating. I have my fears though. I just hope that
my efforts will help prevent her from doing something
that she will ultimately regret.
