Description
Standing at a mere four feet in height, this male duergar carries a hefty
bulk on his compact frame. Well-toned muscles ripple under skin an inky
shade of black to expose a masked strength. Piercing red eyes that seem to
almost glow in darkness look out from a broad face. His large nose hangs
crookedly to the left above a wide mouth with grimy teeth. Thick locks of
oily black hair are bound by loose bands that fall down the sides of his
head and intertwine into his beard that comes to one long point at his
waist.
A dark gray metal mask with a polished finish covers the upper right side
of his face, hiding little of his distinctive look while still protecting
the temple. He wears a loose black shirt that is largely hidden behind his
beard and tucked into a set of wide pants held tight by a dark leather belt
and ending in a pair of matching boots. A large pack with wide shoulders
sits tightly against his back while bulging at the seams. Several weapons
hang from his waist and he frequently moves a hand to rest on various hilts
in a thoughtless motion of comfort. Great care has been taken to keep his
clothing and weapons clean and in good repair.

Early Life
Added Tue Feb 28 09:40:15 2023 at level 1:
A pudgy baby duergar boy was born in the middle of the night, his first
cry coming as the last blood of his mother pours onto the floor below him.
The midwife holds up the baby to his father, but the look of disgust on his
face says it all and Rogdan becomes one of the many unwanted babies to be
born in Aran'gird.
The years pass as Rogdan grows in weight much more quickly than height,
his survival set only as his future is. They always need more miners and
he will join them the very next day. Despite the availability of food and
some measure of safety, his life has been one lived in constant danger.
His peers are as brutal as any of the adults. It is a common sight for
many of the youth to be sporting at least one bandage, as they fight
for status and the little that each other has. Rogdan has survived by
moving quickly despite his bulk, outrunning many that would chase or
squeezing into surprisingly small spaces to hide.
Last Night
Added Tue Feb 28 09:40:46 2023 at level 1:
Rogdan had intended to try to spend his last street night in a place that
he had never been found at yet, what should be a guaranteed night of
safety before he moves into the miner's barracks and is protected by the
guards. It wasn't a great surprise when he heard Valatar call out 'I know
you are here fatty'. Val had been a constant presence in Rogdan's life,
one of torment and hate for years. She was tall and was a fierce fighter,
so much that he had never been able to do more than run from. She clearly
sought her last chance to dominate him, but this spot would be trouble. He
had never been found here because it was near the edge of their city, few
came this far and none would hear his cries of pain this late.
Rogdan looked down at the few possessions he had - a few small shards of
mithril that shined in the light, a pale mushroom that was to be his
dinner, and a few coils of rope that he had just found today. There was
a way, but it would take luck. He lifted the rope and moved as quietly
as he had ever moved to creep down behind Val. She was looking through
an abandoned building, clearly not knowing exactly where he was. Rogdan
had to make a quick decision, and calculated the risk worth potential
revenge. He slipped behind her and slipped the rope up and over her head
before pulling it tight. A surprising strength entered him and his bulk
allowed him to keep his feet as her final kicking feet stopped. He looked
down and realized that she was alive, just breathing quietly asleep.
First Day
Added Tue Feb 28 09:41:27 2023 at level 1:
When Valatar was found the next day midmorning, she had asphyxiated on her
own vomit. A rope had been wrapped around her neck and then strung around
her hands and feet behind her back, pulling her entire body taut. The more
she panicked and struggled, the faster she would end her own life.
Rogdan reported for duty on time that morning to start his career in mining,
but had not accomplished more than beginning to learn the first pathways in
the mines before two guards came for him. He had heard the rumors spread
faster than the guards had come, and knew Val had died. It surprised him a
bit, he had not intended for her to exactly die but he didn't find himself
disappointed either. He went went willingly but was surprised they were
escorting him calmly without aggression. Rogdan found himself led through
several hidden passageways before ending up in the dungeons of the Palace.
He expected this, but was surprised when he was released before a foul
smelling duergar male. He eyed him up and down before saying, 'I am Yinral
and you will be my apprentice. I hear you are good with rope, grab some
from that coil there and let me teach you where you failed last night'.
Dungeons
Added Tue Feb 28 09:42:10 2023 at level 1:
Rogdan spent the next few years as an apprentice to Yinral, who he learned
was the head interrogator and torturer for the Palace. He was never accosted
again, in fact most found themselves walking in a different direction when
he came down the street. He found that he had enough coin to live well in
the city, though he found that the only place that was home was in the
dungeons. He kept a room to rest across from Yinral, soon becoming used to
the screaming cries of pain so that he could easily snore through them.
Over these years, Rogdan found that he had a natural talent for helping with
securing the prisoners for interrogations. He could use lengths of ropes and
the correct knots to stress many different joints and cause immense amounts
of pain. There was a sense of study mixed with art in the craft, and he fully
dedicated himself to mastering it as best he could from Yinral. He enjoyed
the work, despite the fact that at the end of the day he felt more trapped
than he would have been in the mines. Everyone was so uncomfortable with him
around that he had been asked to stay away from anywhere there was drink and
food, instead having whatever he wanted brought to him. It did not help that
while his entire kin were foul mouthered and brutish, Yinral had instilled a
way of speaking that kept the foul mouth out of any discussion that needed
precision.
Overworld
Added Tue Feb 28 09:42:44 2023 at level 1:
He knew there was more to life than being stuck in a dungeon, so one night
he simply slipped out the front gate and headed to the surface. He found
that terrible damned ball in the sky agony for the first months, but soon
his eyes adapted. Still, the sun caused great irritation to his skin and
he will break out in hives if he spends too much time out. This caused him
to spend much time indoors, visiting many libraries to determine where he
could pursue his life above. Rogdan was not a strong reader and many of
these first trips had him sounding out new words quietly, but over time
he found it easier until he didn't even notice he had mastered the skill.
After reading about the guilds of Thera and finding not all would accept
a duergar, Rogdan settled on the thieves' guild. What better way to avoid
the sun than to simply keep to the shadows. Now that he has an opportunity
to learn of his own free will, he takes advantage and dabbles lightly into
many topics. He even found word of another library that takes works from
any that can be added. Rogdan plans to seek out the Eternal Library and
see if there is room for a book about ropes and all the ways they can be
used.
A familiar pattern emerges that does remind Rogdan of home, the constant
presence of guards walking the battlements and roads of Galadon. This
inspires Rogdan as who truly is most free if not the guard who can walk
wherever they need to go. While they are called to strike the wanted, he
notices those of the Tribunal use the guards as a shield. He has read of
those that will hunt him from the savages to the east to the fortress to
the north and decides that the power of the guard behind him be of great
aid. Rogdan will pursue it earnestly, even if it is convenient as it will
give him the free time to learn.
The Spire
Added Tue Mar 21 15:14:12 2023 at level 51:
Rogdan found a unique life within the walls of the Spire. He was
mostly welcomed with open arms and despite some initial warnings
he found the first place he belonged. He found people who would
run to him if he was put to magical sleep without a hesitation
for their own life. He though it was rather foolish to throw
your life away that easily, but he did appreciate finding people
who would do it for him.
He grew in both skill and in titles within his guild, but still
struggled with the full master of every nuance of the rope. Rogdan
had visited the Eternal Library and browsed around it, and with
great glee found no current reference point to the art of the rope
and binding people with them. He wanted to write as an expert, so he
still returned back to mastering his abilities frequently between his
duties.
He told the Provost, Tiarumas, directly that he wanted the position of
Vindicator in the Spire. He expected to be chided for being too eagar,
but surprisingly was given the posting he asked for in Hamsah while he
pursued it. After advancing considerably, he hoped his name would be
thought of when the position came to be but knew it was still a dream
for the future.
