Description

Tall and lean, this elf stands just over six feet in height. His brown mixed with silvery strands of hair frames an once handsome, now aged and regal, face. Blue eyes are set below a strong brow. His hair is long enough to be pulled back into a braid that falls about to the middle of his back. His hands appear calloused and cracked. He appears to move about with the wary attention of one expecting violence at any turn. On a shoulder, you see part of a black jaguar tattoo, dotted with glowing white eyes. On his lapel, you notice some new stitching that appears to look like a large fish. Looking more closely you see that....

Role

A Base Born Elf pt1.

In Rolen's mind, he is, and always will be, the base born elf he entered this
world as.


He doesn't have this frame of mind in the sort of self loathing, or self
pity, or any sort of negative connotation, he has this frame of mind in that
his life it one that nothing has ever, or ever will be just given to him, he
will have to earn it by working harder, and more persistently than anyone
else that would be given it otherwise. This is the basis for hit courage, to
face being owed nothing, and finding a way to earn it anyhow.


Rolen was born to impoverished elves that lived around Darsylon. They were
not beggars, they didn't hunt, they just did not have much other than each
other. They worked for what they had, doing any job offered to them, for
whatever coin that was offered. His first work was to clean the styes of a
pair of boars a nearby neighbor had trapped in the woods. They were to be
fatted up for a few years before being sold to the King's court for a feast,
and neighbor that caught them didn't really want to do the nasty work
himself.


Rolen didn't mind it, it was a steady source of coin for the family for the
time he did it, and he got to help haul the butchered carcasses to the city
when the job was done. It was there, for the first time that he saw the
riches and finery that life had to offer, and it was also then that he saw
that perhaps someday he could earn a part of that for himself.


His menial work continued from that day in the city, for himself and his
family as well, but from that day Rolen showed the courage within him by
aspiring, and working for, more than this life. He started with training his
body. He saw the soldiers guards in the city, and how strong and imposing
they all looked. He knew to be like them, he would have to train like them.
This led to other work, like picking up a broken hoe shaft one day and
swinging it, not for working the soil, but to strike at a target. He did this
until his hands bled from the work, but he knew that this would be how he
could find jobs that needed that sort of skills.


More hardship than the usual came for Rolen after he had started this added
work of training himself for other work. A famine had fallen on the kingdom
of Darsylon, and the lowest of peoples felt it the most. Game was scarce,
crops were poor, and jobs did not exist for a time. It was over these seasons
that he was left alone as the last of his family name, Sharnodri, the rest of
his family weakened by the famine and succumbing to natural causes their
bodies could not withstand in their weakened state. It was no bodies fault,
and kindness came from many over those long months, but everyone need take
care of their own in lean times, and to the Sharnodri name, there was not
enough to take care of each other.

A Base Born Elf pt2.

After he was alone, Rolen broke from the routine that he had followed before.
Going wherever his heart led him for the day, and reveling in the freedom of
it, even when he felt the pangs of loss from his family being gone. It took
some time after the famine for his strength to return, once food was able to
be more easily and afford ably found. More often than not, his heart led him
to focusing more on weapons training.  He spend days watching soldiers work,
learning how they did things, and trying his best to copy it. He began to
save money from the work he could find, hearing that the Theran academy
would take warriors to show the basics to, for those that could pay for it.


He left home, leaving his name registered as a citizen of Darsylon, but he
set out, knowing he likely wouldn't come back the same, because he had the
courage to seize something new, something different, something better.

Odd Jobs and New Proposals

After the academy, Rolen continued his newly found freelancing nature,
following the lead of anything that caught his eyes and ears and looking for
jobs to do from anyone that was offering. He realized in hindsight, that some
of this caution to the wind attitude led him to some less than savory
individuals. A woman name Saldria and a man named Brundlir, had asked him to
some simple work, a delivery for one, and something of a strong-armed
acquisition for the other, but nothing against the Light was asked or done
and Rolen didn't think much of it at the time. Months later though, after
doing some jobs for the Order of Acolytes in Loch Grynmear, he was paid with
a ring that helped him to more clearly see auras about those that were truly
evil within their heart, and it was after this point that he was able to see
Saldria and Bundlir for what they really were.


While he was going from job to job, and new proposal was brought to his
attention. Not an odd job like the others, this one was something of a cause
to stand for, and a duty to uphold. The Captain of the Fortress of Light was
who spoke to him, and asked him about joining the individuals there. Rolen
respectfully delayed taking the offer and making the pledge of seeking to
join, never having considered himself in that way before. But looking closer
at himself, he made realizations of how much he had changed since leaving
Darylson. It was still his home, he visited there and did some commerce
(which was another keen calling he had taken up since the academy), but he
was hardly the dirty waif that looked for any sort of work that might earn
him a copper for a days work. With his new advances in the warrior guild, and
the experiences that had led him to new ways of thinking, he eventually
accepted the Captains words and pledged before the Tara'Bal, and began this
new chapter, that of a Squire for the Holy Brigade of Light.

Strength From the Eye of the Storm

Rolen was young the first time he remembered feeling an inner strength
stemming from seeing chaos happening around him and finding a way to stay
calm within it. There was a storm passing through, and his mother had told
him that it was a violent one which would be loud and she and the others
needed to keep the shutters and doors held fast, so he would be alone in the
middle of the small house, but he should stay calm. He sat there, alone with
the winds growing louder and hearing the shouts of his family as they
struggled to hold their tiny home together against the raging winds and rain,
staring at the flame of lone candle in the center of the table. His heart
raced, he was very young and the storm was frightening, and he felt like as
the flame danced wilder and wilder as the winds fought their way through
cracks and crevices of the house he heart danced wilder with it. Then,
suddenly, the flame stopped dancing and calmed itself, and he calmed with it.
He could still hear the winds raging outside, but now the flame was calm, and
so was he. After a short time, the flame began to dance again, but Rolen
remained calm, remembering the flame at rest, and he felt strength inside to
remain calm while chaos danced around him.


In coming years, and to this day, Rolen remembered that calm flame. As the
chaos rises around him, and or he himself is that chaos as he strikes against
enemies, he keeps that flame fixed in his head, keeping his mind calm still,
relying on it for inner strength.

Sitting by a Campfire pt1.

Sitting on the ground with his back to a log and a crackling campfire to his
side, Rolen watched a fishing line extending out into the placid waters. The
sun was setting and his vision was a mix of colors seen from the fading
sunlight, and muted greys as his elven eyes saw though the darkness coming
from the onset of twilight. This was the longest he had ever spent time
simply relaxing, or trying to relax. It was hard to do so when your instincts
were always wound up and ready to react, seeing enemies behind the bushes,
and hearing covert movements in the leaves, but it has been enough time away
at this point that here next to the fire and fishing simply because it was
enjoyable, he was indeed relaxed, and it opened his mind to be able to just
drift, and think about matters that had long gone unthought.


In previous conversations with Lady Baerinika, he had talked about his family
legacy, and not wanting the family name of Sharnodri to die with him. He'd
recently thought about retiring for good, finding a young elven maiden to
settle down with and start a family, so that the name could be rekindled and
live on, but, the thought didn't feel right at the time, and it didn't feel
any more right as he remembered how to relax now. It felt like his name would
die more in that path, not less. Glancing off to the glade over his shoulder,
he could see several indistinct mounds there, marked with weathered stones.
How had it been so long that he had seen his family buried there, how had so
much time passed of him not being part of a family, one that lived just to
try to keep living and supporting each other. He ran a hand over his fine
clothing as if just remembered he was wearing it, and gripped the steel shaft
of his weapon, Fury of the Phoenix, before drawing one of the heartseeker
daggers and looking at his own reflection in the shining blade. His fathers
eyes, he was told he had them, and his mothers chin. They looked back at him
now even though their graves hardly stood out from the earth around them, it
had been so long. Their legacy, lived on in him, and was sealed, there was no
changing that now, and the strong people that they were was already forgotten
by those who would forget, and would never be forgotten by those who would
not. It wasn't the time now to try to seal the legacy of it the Sharnodri
name, it was time to see to leaving a mark for the Fortress of Light, and the
Spearmaiden, Lady Baerinika.

Sitting by a Campfire pt2.

He had always been particular about seeking out and doing well in any job. It
was how his family survived, and he was still always proud to see a job well
done. But, Marshall of the Fortress of Light, marked follower of the
Spearmaiden herself, although he had always treated these as a job, very
special ones, it was time to see them as more than that. These, were not
temporary, there was no point that the job was finished, not in his lifetime,
and it was something he realized now as he took some time for himself, that
these honors were his life now, his own new namesake. He was the last
Sharnodri, but he was not be the last Marshall, the Light willing, and he was
not the only faithful of Baerinika. The path before him now, was to seal
himself into these forever, stop doing the job, and accept that he was now
living the life, the life of not only the Marshall, but one that is a sworn
follower of Baerinika as well, with entwined callings to stand for the Light
against the darkness and be a force that not only held it at bay, but chased
the wicked into the darkness itself, a landslide filling in the darkest
places and snuffing the life from it there.


Snapping out of his drifting thoughts, Rolen scrambled to his feet as his
fishing line snapped sharply under the surface and the pole arched forward.
Pulling the rod free he began playing the fish on the other end he could
already feel was quite large.
