Description

A male human of average height but with broad shoulders stands with his feet planted firmly on the ground and his well muscled arms folded across his broad chest. His clothes are a mixed bag of armors and garbs. He seems not to care about his attire other than its function. His eyes are sunken and surrounded by dark, greyish looking skin that make him look like a brawler. Those eyes never cease dart and scan the surroundings for any sign of trouble. Dark veins can be seen through his pale and transparent skin, threading down the length of his neck and disappearing below his neckline. They reappear like black rivulets running down his wrists and the backs of his hands where they snake right up to his finger tips. His nails on his hand are long, bruised looking, like they have been hit with a hammer. Dark brown hair can be seen protruding below his headwear and below the hairline are those sad and lifeless eyes again. His long robes will occasionaly betray the sight of a weapon on his belt as he moves. Among his armors you notice particularly that he wears:

Role

Hapam Wood.

Added Mon Jul 23 02:17:54 2012 at level 15:
'The world is good, the world is wood.' That was the mantra by which most of the
people who lived in and around Hapam Wood. There were all manner of trades
that existed in the area but the area thrived due to the extremely good quality
wood that the trees produced. This was sold on as plain old wood, decorative
furniture, children's toys and all manner of utensils and things for the home.
Merchants came from far and wide to do trade with the people of Hapam wood
for it was known that those who tried to take the wood from the people of
Hapam wood without their permission (and it was seldom given) often did not
come back out of the wood. The woodsmen who tended and harvested from the
wood considered themselves to be more like a shepherd who watched and lived
off their flock. Ronas Broadoak was one such woodsman and well respected
within the community due to his knowledge of the woods and his sense of what
was right and what was wrong. He was like an unofficial magistrate of Hapam wood.

Dark roots.

Added Mon Jul 23 02:19:07 2012 at level 15:
In the middle of the forest a dark robed mage stands in a decorative looking circle.
Within the circle there are a number of ornate looking items, five to be exact and
each one sits at the point of a star. Around the circle, 5 other hooded men stand
with a smaller person in a hood, perhaps a child or a women held in front of them.
The chanting began deeply but softly and then slowly began getting louder and
louder until it suddenly stopped. The woods were silent and the only motion came
from the 5 robed figures who pulled the robes off those stood in front of them to
reveal 5 naked women who were clearly with child. The robed mage let out a high
pitched scream and simultaneously the 5 women had their throats cut and their
bellies opened by the sharp daggers held in the hands of the men stood behind them.
The ground in the middle of the circle opened up into a dark portal and 5 demonic
quasits emerged. They looked at the dead women lying at the edges of the circle
and began to whine and let out a high pitched cry that was more like a wounded
animal than the child they almost resembled. They began walking about the circle
looking for a weakness and as they did so the dark robed mage continued to chant.
Suddenly and without warning the demonic looking quasits burst through the circle
and each grabbed the, now screaming, robed men around the circle. They clawed at
faces until they were eyeless and then they dragged them into the portal. The dark
robed mage began to panic and was waving his arms frantically as his chantings got
louder and faster. Then he stopped as he saw a dark-skinned, black horned creature
begin to emerge from the portal. He turned and ran through the woods, unable to
scream as each breath was a precious few more metres closer to safety. He could
see a light up ahead and scrambled through the edge of the wood towards a cabin.
As he broke the tree-line by a few feet the black horned creature grabbed him from
behind, by the neck and lower back in a paralysing grip and flew back to the woods
with him screaming 'Nooooooooooo!'
Ronas Broadoak and his wife stepped away from the window and looked at each
other. Role + 'Did you see that, Ronas?' she whispered.
'Yes, love.' Replied Ronas sternly. 'There is something in the woods. I need to go.'
'No, don't go!' she cried. 'I have a bad feeling'.
Ronas smiled as he said 'You always have a bad feeling'.
'I have a duty to the woods' and with that he grabbed his axe and left to investigate.

Back at the portal, the dark robed mage was lying in various places around the circle
and the black horned creature was crunching on a jawbone. The ground shook and
the black horned creature disappeared through the portal as thin bloody, black roots
began to push through the ground and a black tree began to take shape about the
portal.

Into the woods.

Added Mon Jul 23 02:20:13 2012 at level 15:
Ronas traipsed through the bracken and ferns that littered the forest floor with his
eyes wide and his axe held ready in his hands. He was so focused that not even the
lonely distant 'hoot' of an owl distracted him. Darkness that was not usual was in the
woods this night and he would need to keep his wits about him.

As he passed the great oak the locals called 'Green Noah' he suddenly smelt it. The
unmistakable smell of charred and burning flesh. It filled his nostrils and his eyes
watered as the stench seeped into his senses. He followed his nose, cautiously, to
where he felt the stench was rooted.

As he approached the smell thickened in the air and he was horror struck at the sight
that lay before him. The circles, the drawings, the bloodso much blood, the burning
bodies and there in the middle of it all, a tree so black it stood out in the already dark
woods. It was like nothing he had seen before and it all just felt wrong to him.
He cleared the area and piled the bodies into a small pyre to burn away the evidence
of what had happened and he would tell nobody about it. Nobody should come here
again.

With the task completed he turned and ran back to his dwelling and the relative safety
provided. He would tell his wife that it was youngsters from the nearby village being
fools and that he would see their parents in the morning and make sure their arses were
tanned with a flexible birch branch. He closed his eyes as he lay in bed that night and the
horrifying images remained, etched on the back of his eyelids it seemed.

The loss no man should suffer.

Added Mon Jul 23 02:21:25 2012 at level 15:
It was almost a full week since the horrors Ronas had witnessed in the woods and the
images that were etched on the back of his eyes were beginning to fade. His son was
approaching his second year and his wife was busying herself with preparations for
the picnic and party that would be held at teatime later.

Ronas was resting on his front porch when he saw a runner from the village coming
quickly through the clearing towards him. The message was that a man had been caught
stealing from the woodpile and the Hall was about to sit and place judgement and so he
was needed. He was thought highly of in the region and was often asked to use his wisdom
and good sense in these matters - like an unofficial magistrate.

Ronas got up slowly and wandered inside, his normally broad shoulders, hunched at the
thought of explaining to his wife that he would have to go and miss his son's birthday
picnic or at least the start of it. She was furious and her face dark, but she had to let him
go and fulfil this duty.

His last words to his wife before he departed for the village were 'I will be as quick as I can
so I can be at the trickle-stream by 3pm. I don't want to miss out!'
Ronas was as good as his word and the judgement was passed, the man was guilty and in
the stocks for the week and Ronas made his apologies quickly and sped off towards the
trickle stream and his family picnic.

When he got there he saw the cloth by the stream and most of the food and drinks laid
out upon it but his wife and son were not there. He though they may be paddling by the
guddling pool, where he used to tickle trout, so he crept up to scare them but when he
jumped out there was nobody there. Confused and a little worried he called out for them
and to his dread he got no reply. He searched frantically for them for the best part of two
hours and then his own fear washed over him like icy water and ran towards the place
where he saw the black tree - whispering to himself 'Not there, they would not go there'.
Then his stomach felt like it had stones in it as he picked up their trail just past 'Green
Noah', the great oak and he knew they were at the black tree.

His heart was heavy and tears ran down his face as the trees opened up before him to reveal
his wife and young son standing in the branches of the black tree with nooses tied around
their necks. They were both crying fearfully and his wife mumbled 'I could not stop..' just
before she took her son's hand and stepped off the branch and felt the short drop and the
sudden stop. They kicked their legs, a little, as Ronas ran towards them, axe in hand, then
eyes bulged out of their sockets and their tongues lolled out of their mouths as they
moved no more.

Unrivaled Pain

Added Mon Jul 23 02:24:08 2012 at level 15:
Ronas let out a cry like that of a grizzly bear, pain and anguish lost in his fury and anger.
He swung at the base of the black tree with his axe, swing after swing after swing. His fifth
swing caused a splinter to leave the trunk and it embedded itself into his hand but he did
not stop, even though the wound burned like fire. Then a dark red sticky looking liquid
began to run from the trunk of the black tree as his axe cleaved into it. Only when he barely
had the strength to stand did he stop to see the damage he had done to the black tree but
to his angry surprise he saw that when the 'blood', it looked like blood, ran from the trunk
it had no damage to it at all. Ronas wept openly and offered a prayer to the gods. As he did
so a chill wind swept through the branches of the black tree. He stepped backwards and
stumbled over an unearthed root and knocked himself out on a rock.

Rumours and truths

Added Mon Jul 23 02:25:02 2012 at level 15:
Ronas did not remember how he had gotten back to his cabin but awoke to the hollow
emptiness of a room that had once known love and life but was now empty and pitiful.
The wound on his hand from the splinter had gotten worse despite the poultice he had
applied to it. The darkening skin had now travelled as high as his shoulder and his entire
arm felt cold to the touch. Perhaps it was dying, he though, dying as his heart does with
the loss of his family.

By this time it was well known in the region that Ronas' wife and young son had mysteriously
disappeared and that he would not even speak of them. Rumours were rife that he had killed
them in a mad rage and buried their bodies in the woods. He was seen running from the
village on the day they disappeared, after all. The only person to have not looked at him funny
in the weeks since the incident was an elven ranger who had travelled through the woods and
seen him mumbling to himself. The elf had looked at his arm with great concern and spoke to
to him of being overrun by darkness and doing what was right by everyone. Ronas thought it
an odd thing at the time but as time had marched on since then and the infection in his arm
appeared to worsen he found himself having dark thoughts and dreams.

In these dreams he was leading black creatures through towns and cities and tearing them,
and the people in them, down. He awoke after the third night of these dreams to find that
darkening skin was as high as his jaw line and across his chest where his heart lay beneath.
He knew now what the elf had meant and decided there and then to take his life to stop
himself from becoming a pawn of the darkness. He gathered up a coil of rope from his
tool shed and shambled into the forest towards the black tree where he would die as his
family had done and be with them for eternity.

He climbed as high as he could with one true arm and then through the rope over a branch
then tied it off. He then put the noose around his neck and spat at the tree before jumping.
He fell and the air rushed past him he braced himself for the jerk, the sudden stop or the
tightening but none came. He opened his eyes and he was back in front of the black tree.
He thought he must have imagined it so he tried again and again and again but the same
result occurred each and every time until he yelled at the tree 'What do you want from me?!'
A sound like a horn echoed in the mind of Ronas, 'To serve!'.

The Quasit

Added Mon Jul 23 02:52:08 2012 at level 17:
The black tree or the being behind it began communing with its lesser followers and
chose one called 'Asheath'. It bound the Quasit, Asheath, to Ronas and told him to do the
bidding until the infection was completed, with the seed embedded in his heart.
More importantly though Asheath was commanded to spy on Ronas and to report any
incidence of Ronas' humanity bubbling to the surface. Asheath solemnly nodded before
he found himself thrown from the belly of the tree, into the bracken, to follow Ronas
until he was called back by his true master.

Protect Asheath

Added Sat Aug 11 06:20:11 2012 at level 39:
Ronas woke in the Hamsah lecture hall with a strange feeling in his head, a calling to
the black tree near Arkham. He tried to resist until Asheath pounced on his shoulders
and sunk his teeth into his neck then Ronas dutifully accepted the calling and travelled
to Arkham to commune with the black tree.

'Your body grows weak Ronas and Asheath has been broken twice by your lack of care
for him. You must better protect him and in turn protect yourself for we are not done
with you, our emissary of the woods.'

Ronas motioned towards the tree, his axe in hand and tried to explain that there were
greater nuances to discuss with the guildmasters to allow him to complete his mission
and to be allowed to die but Asheath jumped up onto his axe arm and stopped him
raising it. At the same time a small black seed of metal and earth shot from the tree
into Ronas' chest as a voice echoed in his head 'Protect Asheath and protect the seed'.

The Black tree's gifts

Added Tue Aug 21 01:55:01 2012 at level 41:
Ronas did as he was instructed and used his accumulated knowledge, to discuss with
a guildmaster of conjuration, and ward Asheath from harm and make his body more
robust. It pained Ronas to do so as he still hated the little Quasit so very much and
everytime he watched it squashed he knew he was closer to his own end when the
trees could no longer touch him.

Then, as he wandered from the consortium of magic that lies north of Tir-Talith he
found himself in receipt of powers bestowed upon him by the trees. He was given
the ability to twist and squish his already tainted and poisoned flesh to mimic the
pockets you often find on girdles or belts. It does make him less able to control
and persuade servitors considerably but the extra places to put magical armaments
have proven useful and something will just need to be worn to draw the eye away
from the fleshy pockets so that he can still work with the beings from the other
planes.

The second gift was more of a feeling. He had always been quite comfortable as
he walked through the woods but now he almost felt the wooded grounds through
his footwear, something like being a child in soft moccasins. He did not know whether
the black trees were trying to further his torment with reminders of a life he had once.

The third gift perplexed him the most. It seemed more of a mockery than the second
and yet he did not know that the black trees had such mirth within them. It could be a
a great boon if harnessed correctly but to make a being fear wood so much as to make
it hurt them more felt redundant in his hands. The days of being a woodsman and to
swing an axe or staff, with great accuracy and damage, are behind him and his servitors
and fellow scholars are not wooden or use wood either. He mused with the master of
the planes about the possibility of demonic treants from the shadow plane but whilst
the idea excited them both they were not knowledgeable enough to work out how.

Ronas had been putting off this journey until he had a reputation of strength in the land
but it seems he must seek out the Eye in the Darkness to help make sense of these gifts
and discuss his plans for the future Night but first he must find a suitable gift.
