Description

You barely glimpse the form before you as it melds into the background. The thin, somewhat tall shape is covered in ritualistic tattoos. Decades spend in the woods have scarred and tanned his ivory skin. A melange of leathers from different beasts cover his wiry frame while a few bits of rocks decorate his hands and neck. He carries a slender staff that is hand-crafted but better than anything you've ever seen in any shop in the realm. The mud splashed on his skin almost make him seem a swamp creature.

Role

The Savage Philosopher

Added Tue Jan 10 14:19:54 2012 at level 20:
Ruch Galice was a philosphic savage, or perhaps better put, a savage philospher.
Ruch led an interesting childhood with some of the usual events --
orphaned during an orc rampage, sold as a house slave to drow and rescued by high elves.
Because he was still quite young when rescued, he was adopted into a scholastic family in Darsylon.
Ruch spent the rest of his youth in various academies where he excelled in his studies.

However, Ruch suffered the usual discrimination that many high elves feel for their woods kin.
While somewhat protected by the family, it nevertheless gave him a sense of not belonging that permeated his existence.
His studies had led him into philosophy where he thrived, trying to find a sense of belonging in higher thought.
His studies of wood-elf patterns and logic appealed to him but, again,
he didn't feel connected to his feral kin in his bones.

It was on a trip through the lands of the OneHearts where he had a lengthy discussion
with the mystics and the Chief where he found a belief that rang true --
The belief in Thar-Eris as the correct pattern for existence.
Once he found that core belief, he pursued the logic towards the end
that led to adopting a simple hunter existence. The savage lifestyle
seemed closer to the Earth and truer to all existence.

Ruch then sought out what sources he could and began to rely more on his instincts in pursuit of this simpler life.
Amongst those whom he eventually sought were the Outlanders. Their pursuit of individuality in
bringing about the return of Thar-Eris appealed strongly to his core nature.

On Hunting.

Added Thu Jan 12 11:06:57 2012 at level 25:
Ruch had to admit that even after the training and practice, he was still an indifferent killer.
Oh he was good enough hunting the strange abominations of trolls and in liberating the souls of slaves,
But when it came to killing necromancers or conjurers, he was a bit incompetent.
The first, a necromancer he managed to lure into a trap which didn't work as planned
because he was too slow on the attack, still managed to send the black mage running with
only a few drops of blood left but Ruch was blind and could not chase.
The second, a conjurer who wandered into an ambush, fled again before gasping his last breath.

The problem, as Ruch saw it, was that his academic training left him deeply ambivalent towards taking life.
Philosophically he understood that re-incarnation would make the death impermanent and that was enough to let him hunt.
But he needed to find a way to finish the hunt if he was to be of value to the Tree.
That had been made clear to him by Rolas Spiritwind, the Harbinger.
Ruch had begun to doubt whether he would actually make a good member of the Outlander group
given their generally bloodthirsty reputation. He felt strongly about Thar-Eris but wasn't confident he'd ever be a master hunter.
As a result of all this deliberation, Ruch decided to practice his skills tirelessly
until he knew that a lack of skill wasn't the impediment. With that cause isolated, he pursued his hunts mostly alone with his thoughts.

A little update

Added Sat Jan 28 21:50:35 2012 at level 40:
Much has passed between the chapters recorded here amongst the ether in the life of Ruch Galice.
Ruch had analyzed his hunting problems and decided that two problems needed to
be addressed -- deficient skills and overthinking the prey.
To address the first he decided to concentrate on hunting alone and hunting dangerous prey.
This forced him to learn his skills to the best of his ability and put all the blame or fame on himself alone.
The second problem was addressed by simply diving all in to every hunt.

What really helped was the awakening of his instincts that were brought out by being brought into the Tree.
Yes, Ruch had been inducted into the Outlanders by Rolas Spiritwind, the Harbinger.
Associating and emulating these esteemed hunters led Ruch to some modest success in hunting.
But he had faced some of his biggest challenges in simply finding dangerous game to hunt.

A philosophical musing.

Added Sun Feb 19 17:19:24 2012 at level 50:
Ruch had many debates with himself about the existential conflict between Order and Chaos.
Most of the time he felt that Chaos was the natural progression of all life and that when
we reached the state of perfect Chaos we all would be in a state of perfection forever.
He understood the position of most beings though that rebelled against this notion of perfection.
They insisted on Order because it was familiar and safe and their rather feeble minds could grasp it readily.

In this context, the Spire became a home for the insecure because they could attempt
to garner enough safety through Order.
The Imperial philosophy however seemed to Ruch to be one of using this insecurity
to gather more power for themselves and through Order, regulate the behavior of weaker beings.
It's not really that much different than what the Fortress seeks where they desire
everyone to follow in their footpaths of their own self-perceived righteousness.
Nevertheless, they have all adopted philosophies that are short-sighted and wrong.

Ruch came to the conclusion that it was these misguided philosophies layered with greed and power
that had led so many astray from the Thar-Eris.
Now if he could only figure out how to bring it all back to the primeval path of increasing chaos.

Simplifying his Life.

Added Fri Mar 9 10:52:54 2012 at level 51:
Ruch had enjoyed considerable prowess, at least from his point of view, during his hunts.
By timing his hunts, with considerable patience and some very good luck,
he had managed to kill several of what he viewed as the most formidable foes.
He was under no delusions about how deadly he was to population as a whole,
but he felt that when he chose his hunts, he had a good chance of success.

However, when he sat down to meditate upon his hunts, he became concerned.
Ruch examined his self and wondered how much of his success was attributable to
his luck in finding good armor and clothing and how much to his own prowess.
He also realized he had felt a sense of burden by all the things he wore.
It was then that Ruch realized that he had strayed too far from his early simple longings.
So with that in mind, he removed the larger pieces of armor and left them for others to use,
keeping only a few trinkets of adornment, a pair of boots for backraking and a girdle for his herbs.

Having done this and not only simplified his own existence, but strengthening
the youngsters in the Tree, he breathed a calming meditative breath and continued on his hunts.
Now would come the real tests of his prowess, unencumbered by what most considered necessity.
But what he knew from the Ancients to be trappings of greed.

23 19 An Immortal An Immortal added 1000 exp for: He was an orphan that, through a series of unfortunate events, got raised by elves in Darsylon. He went out to speak with the One Hearts and realized he never felt at home and wanted to serve Thar-Eris.
40 87 An Immortal An Immortal added 400 exp for: More updates about joining Outlander, hunting, tactics, etc. Still working on becoming more skilled, I guess.
50 152 An Immortal An Immortal added 400 exp for: Updates about chaos. Basically, he thinks chaos is the perfect way all life strives to be and orderly people are insecure and hide behind false rules.
51 161 Neltouda I think being inducted into outlander for over 100 hours is deserving of a last name.
51 185 An Immortal An Immortal added 400 exp for: In reflecting about his fights, he thought he was successful because of all the crap he wore, so he shed most of it and fights lighter now.
