Description
You see before you a massive giant, stretching to nearly fourteen feet in
height. The dark blue skin of this giant's shorn head evokes feelings of
the deep blue sea he likely hails from. Simple, yet ancient runes of the
giants are tattooed on his head, starting just above his brow and stretch
back in a line of single characters across his bald head to the nape of his
neck. His face is handsome, though otherwise unremarkable except for the
silvery gray eyes that pierce his dark visage. He has a long, forest green
beard, braided in a fashion common to the dwarves of a forgotten age.
His shoulders are broad, and give way to a massive, muscular frame. Arms
and legs akin to tree trunks seem to sprout from a boulder-like torso. His
armor and weapons looked well cared for, as is befitting a fighter.
Role
Ruvende Raseri
Added Wed Apr 5 20:29:14 2023 at level 11:
Ruvende Raseri was stolen by magic from his family and deposited into the
past, where he became a slave and eventually a pit fighter in the ancient
citadel of Ostalagiah. Good in his heart and at his core, but hardened and
shaped by the brutal life he was forced to live, he has come to see magic as
the true evil in Thera. The mages that caused the chaos, his abduction and
the death of his bride-to-be were both elves, wizards of the light, toying
with powers beyond their grasp. Leaving death, ruin and despair in their
wake. The life of a fighter and soldier has caused him to look with disdain
upon not only wizards, but any who choose a soft or easy life. Despite
initially being captured and enslaved, he came to feel kinship with all
giant kind and before he learned of the path through the Grove, he had
resigned himself to a life of combat in defense of Ostalagiah and support
of the giant races.
Despair

The screams snapped Ruvende awake. His screams? Someone else's? He could not
say. He did not know where he was, he had only a vague recollection of how
he arrived. He was lost. Beyond the underwater canyon of his home, beyond
the reef, beyond the ocean, beyond the kingdom of his people, beyond even
the gods. He pushed himself to his feet. The robes of his bonding feast
barely clung to his massive body, having been ripped by sand, stone and
wind. How many days... or was it weeks, had he been walking? He did not
know, but he pressed on towards where the sun set. His understanding of time
began to disappear and his mind slid through cycles of dreams and
hallucinations, reality all but a mystery.
All he knew by day was the searing sun and the scouring of his skin by the
blowing hot sand. All he knew by night was his beloved's laughter turning
to terror, a blood-curdling scream snapped short by a gruesome crack.
Her body simultaneously ripped apart and put back together, boiled and frozen
in the same terrifying moment, and then Ruvende was sucked into a rushing
whirlpool and everything went black. How long he had been in the desert was
a mystery, and now he was crawling, the robes of his bonding feast long
disappeared, his skin peeled away by the desert sand. Then, mercifully,
finally, there was the sharp crack of lightning. The gods called to him.
Ruvende had not even noticed the darkening of the sky, but the lightning
brought him out of his daze. Bewildered, he realized it had been raining,
beneath him, the rain pooled in the sand, and Ruvende plunged his face and
drank deeply. Salvation, His punishment ended, or so he thought.
Hope

The shovel squelched in the mud as he drove it home, then scraped across
loose rock and stubborn root as he scooped the mud out of the soon-to-be
grave for the giant soldiers that had fallen in defense on their great
citadel. He had been in captivity for months, but he had slowly regained
his strength, and while his skin had returned the brutal desert exfoliation,
he did have the deep furrows on his back given him by the slaver's whip.
But, he had plenty of food, and the wet, dreary climate suited him. As fate
would have it, the graves he dug today were near the Giant Caravan, where
the leaders and commanders of the giant army led the defense of the holy
city. Ruvende didn't even bother to look up as he heard the raised voices
behind him, but was drawn out of his daze by a rough hand on his shoulder
and turned to see the slaver squatting at the edge of the hole.
"Storm get out hole. Go General." The slaver pulled the shovel from
Ruvende's grasp and offered his hand to pull him up. Ruvende clambered
out of the hole with the slaver's help, a look of confusion on his face.
The confusion turned to shock as the slaver pressed a large, double-bladed
battle-axe into his hand. "Storm done dig hole. Goes fight." The slaver
then turned to his other wards and snarled a curse, snapping his whip. He
turned and grinned at Ruvende, as if he had not spent the last season
beating and brutalizing him. Ruvende had a flash of vengeance, but then
realized, this was not the way of the giants. Their life was brutal, as was
their society. The General snarled at him and motioned him towards the city.
Ruvende fell into line with a handful of other giants with equally shocked
looks on their faces and trudged off towards the city, to what end he was
unsure, but as he passed through the gates, and heard the cheers go up from
the city center, he began to have an idea.
Destiny
Added Fri May 26 19:30:46 2023 at level 17:
The crowd roared as he jerked his axe free from the lifeless corpse. It
squelched, as his shovel used to in the mud, and the blood of his foe
leaked onto the sandy floor of the great arena, pooling as the life saving
rain in his desert ordeal once had. It reminded him to drop to his knee
and bow his head in prayer. That brought jeers from the crowd, a mix of
all giant kind. Most of them had forsaken the gods. Ruvende, however, was
certain the gods had chosen him to live, and had delivered him from the
desert to the holy city of Ostalagiah, where all giants had gathered,
and now were forced to band together and defend themselves against the
Grom'lak, the small ones.
What Ruvende still did not understand, and constantly questioned, is why
he was forced to survive such an ordeal in the first place. Why he was
punished in such a brutal manner? Why the gods would send their chosen
children, elven wizards, to be the purveyors of his punishment?
At that moment, two great pillars struck the ground on either side of him,
one of water, and one of lightning, and the crowd once again erupted in
cheers for the victor. Ruvende looked up, and the High King of the Giants
smiled grimly upon him. At the side of the High King was a captive wizard,
forced to do his bidding, and in the midst of the spectacle of victory,
it suddenly dawned on Ruvende. Magic. It was magic that had corrupted the
elves at the bonding feast. It was magic that was to blame for the death
of his betrothed, for his exile from his kingdom, even for the war the
giants now fought against the Grom'lak. The scheming galdros, or wizards,
hiding in their high towers sent the brave humans, dwarves and elves onto
the great battlefield against the giants. This death and destruction was
on them, trying to seize more power for themselves. Yes, Ruvende was certain,
it was magic that was the source of evil, and it was Ruvende's destiny to
fight against those wizards. That is why the gods preserved him, why they
hardened his skin and his soul, so that he could do what must be done.
