Description

Before you stands a lithe man heavily cloaked trying to hide in the shadows. He is perhaps a little under 6 feet in height and from his stature and build you would guess that he is human, though the face lies in the shadow of his hood so is hard to make out. Lean shoulders are heavily strapped and a number of weapons cling tightly to his back but all within easy grasp. The weapon at his belt is a sharp looking dagger. It looks clean but worn so perhaps has seen a lot of use. From beneath his cloak you can just make out some armor. His face is heavily weathered and many wrinkles appear on his aged skin. The hair you can see is mostly grey. He doesn't move like an old man though and you could easily have mistaken him for a youth without a closer look.

As Ryfin grew up he never wanted for anything. He was the youngest son of
a minor noble in the Galadonian region. The Vasdenhorst's lands were small
but they had held them for generations and were well established. Their 
wealth came primarily from their vineyards, though they were probably more 
known for the work they did in supporting the local food shelters. 

All the Vasdenhorst children served in the food shelters once they were of
an age to do so. And all did so willing, it was their heritage and it was
a just and right thing to do. They were always many in need so they were
kept busy.
This also gave Ryfin the chance to meet a variety of interesting characters
that he wouldn't otherwise encounter on the estate. And although their lives
were hard, he envied their freedom. He spent much time with the younger street
kids, sneaking away from his duties at time to cause mischief with them.
Over time he become more comfortable in the city streets than he did back
at his home.

That of course was frowned upon by his parents. As the youngest son he was
being groomed for a leadership role within the guard. Much like his uncle
was the captain of the local garrison that was to be his allotted place.
At least he wasn't to be married off for political reasons like his sister.
But try as they might, his parents could never stop him sneaking away from
when he should have been attending his fighting and academic teachings.

The Streets

During the time on the streets, Ryfin was witness to a lot of the cruelty
that the rest of his family seemed mostly ignorant of, or at least unwilling
to take action outside their sphere of influence. More than one of his friends
were killed or maimed, for simply taking a small purse from someone who didn't
need it, or run down by a horse because the rider didn't care to take notice of
a street kid. And that wasn't to mention the slavers who were always on the 
lookout for young boys and girls for nefarious reasons.

He knew being a captain of the guard was not going to be enough, he also had no 
desire to be a leader, he just wanted to make a difference. Make life just a 
little bit safer for those he could. He started to attend more training on 
the estates but would take the minimum of instruction before heading off to 
practice without the rigidness that his trainers always seemed to want to enforce.

And as he returned to the streets he found solace in the shadows there as his
friends did. Although still young, he become a look out and enforcer when needs
be to protect those who were less able to look after themselves. His training
aided much, but he was still far from what he needed to be.

The Guild

It was one of his street friends that introduced him to the Guildmaster. Joesph who
Ryfin had thought was lost, tracked him down and after a quick reunion explained
that he had been inducted months earlier by the secretive organisation. The Guild
was always on the lookout for new apprentices and the streets were often the first
place they looked.

Little convincing was required as Ryfin agreed to meet the Guildmaster. It was far
from anything he had planned, but knew this was the training he required. He quickly
dedicated himself to this new art form, almost to the exclusion of all else. Though
he still ventured home from time to time, he felt himself drifting apart from his 
family. His father came to accept his son's choice, even if he did not fully understand
it. 

As his skills progressed he ventured further from Galadon, and was not long before
his took down his first wicked soul. Though no joy was received in taking a life, 
there was satisfaction that the world was just a little bit safer. It was during
this time that he began to learn of the Fortress of Light and the Maran that called
it home. Ryfin was sure this would be his family of spirit as he pledged himself
to their cause.

First Journal Entry

I've never kept a journal before, but well today was momentous for me and I think it will be
useful to have a place to put down my thoughts. 
Today, well today I met the Captain of the Brigade and today I become a Squire. 
Something I have longed for and hunted for years now. The Captain is everything I thought they 
would be, welcoming, knowledgeable and earnest in the quest of the Brigade. I spoke to the Captain,
an interview of sorts along with another hopeful Paladin Knight recruit. It seems the Fortress 
was recruiting heavily that day for others were recruited shortly after ourselves. I dared not
ask if it was due to attrition in the ongoing war. But nether the less I have new brethren who
share the same goals as myself.
It is hard to describe how it feels and I know I won't be able to write it elegantly like my
sister would, so I won't. Reading this I am sure will be enough to bring back those feelings.

It is difficult at times, did I really know what I was getting myself into when I joined the
guild. Is it easier is for the soldiers who rush into battle. Stalking my prey and being witness
to the wickedness of the world makes me wonder. Choosing the right moment to strike it is not
simple. Time and again I have let my emotions in and my prey has escaped when I should have
shown patience. I must do better, I chose this and I will not let my brothers and sisters
down.
