Role
A memory of scorn.

Deradel Madivani was brilliant.
A once in a generation talent, and a once in a generation mind; he was
slated for greatness even as a teenager. His spellwork was flawless, his
teachers effusive with praise where praise was rarely found.
But this tale is not about him. Not really.
He was just the one laughing the loudest.
I will always remember that. For a long time, it kept me up at night.
There I was, standing at the front of the lecture hall. We were all
presenting research, you see. One after another my fellows had come up to
talk about their planned area of study over the next three years. Why they
should be one of the four exemplers who would gain room and robe and step
into the high tower of Thar-acacia. The future greats. The next generation.
Well, three candidates. There was no doubt who was getting the first
position.
I was laying out my vision. Not some trite improvement on the enlargement
spell, or a way to make the boundaries of a celestial circle malleable
whatever that was supposed to achieve--I admit I dozed off part way through
that particular lecture. Conjuration is perhaps my second most favoured of
the five arts, but nevertheless, honestly.
No.
I proposed fixing our greatest mistake.
Is order not the greatest boon to the civilised world? Does not magic in
the hands of an ordered mind pave the way to wonders? Should we isolate
ourselves and pretend our error had not taken place?
No. We should return, and unmake that which was made in error. The remnants
of the anti magic army should be snuffed out or brought to heel, and we
could once more guide the world forward to a new age beneath the aegis of
the rule of civilised law.
I was naive, in hindsight. So naive. Some wounds run too deep, and this one
had festered.
Yet I will always remember the laughter. The derision. The scorn.
And Deradel Madivani's smug smirking face.
I did not get one of the positions.
Consigned to mediocrity.

It wasn't so bad, or so my father told me. He had never made it into the
tower either, and while my aptitude for the five magics was greater than
his, he had always cautioned me that the opposition was always rampant.
He was a kind man, my father. A little lacking in ambition, and a little
mediocre; but kind. He got me a job in the Wizard's Wish, and I wasted the
next year of my life stocking shelves and serving my fellow citizens.
I kept up my studies in my own time, but it is no substitute for formalised
education, and my father was of little help in this regard. His aptitude
lay in the field of transmutation, and I can't say I've ever had much zeal
for the subject--a noble enough calling, as is study of any of the five
magics, but my interests lay elsewhere.
I wish I could tell you that I would not have remained stocking shelves and
sweeping floors for long, but I will not indulge in self delusion. No: it
required a catalyst to break me of my malaise.
Seething with a smile.

It was just another quiet day in the Wizard's Wish when it happened.
I was working the counter when the man entered. He stood out immediately.
Not because he was one of the rare adventurers from outside, who would
sometimes brave and surpass even the formidable defences of the valley
below. No: it was because he was dressed in shining silver robes.
Those of the tower rarely came out into the streets, and even more rarely
to shop.
I remember he asked for me by name. It is strange to me even now that I did
not recognise him. It is amazing what a year can do, a set of formal robes,
a bit of growing up. But when I confirmed my identity and Deradel Madivani
offered sincere apology for his mockery of me during the disaster at the
lecture halls?
I recognised him then.
I thanked him, of course. I can be graceous, even as he drove the
metaphorical knife between my ribs, and gave it a good long twist with an
offer of getting me another chance with one of his connections and help
formulating a superior research proposal.
. How could I refuse? It was everything I could have wanted. More than any
failed applicant could dream of, particularly one as lo born as myself.
It turned out Deradel Madivani, like my father, was a kind man too. No
doubt it'd ate at him, that moment of casual cruelty. He had wanted to make
things... right.
And I loathed him for it.
Because I did not want empty accolades, or robes, or my signature on some
research paper among a dozen others. I did not want pity, or apologies.
I wanted to see my vision come to pass; and this born genius had just spat
on my dream with his high handed righteousness.
For that, I would never forgive him.
Or anyone else.
To seize.

There is a reason I believe Necromancy is the greatest of the five magics,
and why Conjuration follows in its wake in that regard.
A true master of Necromancy--not one content with the bestial and rabid
form of the Wight, or one who lacks the dedication to excellence necessary
to pursue it to its heights--must put his very life on the line in service
to his craft. Conjurers do this, but it is a byproduct rather than the goal.
No true magus of order who undergoes the becoming can be said to lack
conviction, for the price of failure is not ambiguous. One can say this for
no other arcane discipline.
I note this, for it would be unfair to judge my actions in the next days as
rash. There is risk in seeking advancement, and all risk must be measured.
I do not revel in this risk like some agent of chaos, hoping only to see an
intriguing result. Risk is the gateway to opportunity, and opportunities
must be seized as they present themselves.
Knowing this, it did not make my hands any less clammy as I crept through
the tower of Thar-acacia. I had already almost been seen several times.
That would not be a disaster--I was allowed to be here, if I would likely
reap some silent disapproval. For what I had in mind I must avoid detection
though, and it was a relief when I found an empty room on one of the higher
floors. I had hoped for a student of Necromancy's room, but the silver
robes hanging in neat rows would have to serve.
They fit surprisingly well, and the council of Thar-acacia did not even
give me a second glance as I strolled passed them into the seat of
discipline. After all, I had spoke of opportunity: and there would be no
greater opportunity than Vakrin N'harst being occupied for the day with a
matter outside of the tower's limits. Some eyes simple robes and confidence
will never be enough to deceive.
I did not look back as I stepped out of the city of the Order Magi.
I'd show them all.
Summary/key points/character stuff
Added Sat Jan 30 01:06:21 2021 at level 21:
- Seraxan is from Thar-acacia and believes the policy of isolationism is
flawed, and a trageddy. He believes that being paralysed by the past cannot
be allowed to stifle the grand advances the five magics can achieve in the
hands of the order magi. He proposed that exterminating the battleragers
would absolve them of any blame and they could return to business as usual.
He was quite literally laughed out of town.
- Is very obsessive of his 'vision'. Will harbour deep animocity for those
he believes to be mocking or dismissing it, even if he does not show it
openly. Very vindictive in this regard, more than happy to play the long
grudge game.
- Favours order magi, though only if he perceives them to be working
towards a benefitial cause: one's who set themselves in opposition or who
he perceives as being apathetic he'll consider close to traitors.
- Naturally, wants nothing more for battleragers but an ignoble and ideally
well documented extermination.
- Has a deep disdain for chaos magi (and other chaotic individuals to a
slightly lesser extent), though believes they can be educated and brought
into the fold. Those that cannot be are menaces to society and must be
quietly disposed of or contained.
- Particularly loathes wights, believing they sully Necromancy, his
favoured of the five magics.
- Fairly indifferent where paladins or other good aligns are concerned.
When they start proving to be 'disruptive elements', that will change (he
really does not like disruptive elements - calling someone this is a big
insult from him).
- His goals do somewhat align with Empire, but he does not approve of the
way they handle most magi. Will go Tribunal.
- The one piece of sentimentality he allows himself is he has kept the
robes he used to disguise himself so he could leave through the Thar-acacia
Galadon exit. He is highly resentful of his former home, but also rather
attached to it and prizes the connection to it the robes signify.
- TLDR: he is an ambitious (mildly?) genocidal magus who believes an
ordered world is a grand aspiration for any upstanding member of society to
aspire to, and magic is the oil to grease the wheels.
To cultivate.
Added Mon Feb 1 15:19:00 2021 at level 31:
I have gained a position within the Blood Tribunal. A most industrious and
thorough group, it was no great hardship to select them as the best
organisation to achieve my goals. The Empire's overt hostility has some
advantages, but it is also a far more fragile and tenuous bastion of order.
Not to mention the Tribunal is lead by a formidable Archmage (who I had a
delightful dialogue with), while the Empire is openly oppressive to four of
the five magics. I could never operate in such a short sighted environment,
though they may prove useful in the future if handled correctly - time
shall tell.
The next years will be busy ones. My study of Necromancy has advanced in
leaps and bounds under the tutoring of the guilds, but there is much yet to
learn. The ultimate expression of the art is distant, but I am no longer an
apprentice. One day, it will be mine. However, in the more immediate future
I must begin to cultivate my position within the Spire. I do try to learn
from my mistakes, and I will seek to gain the support of my fellows. The
Vindicator may be a barrier here. I am not sure he is particularly fond of
me, and I cannot say he made a particularly good first impression upon me
either. Something to monitor.
I will also need to begin setting my plan to deal with the blight on the
Order Magi's record into action soon. This at least proceeds a pace. Soon I
shall make the opening play of our war, and it will be a strike they will
have no means to counter, for it will be on a battlefield they do not fight
on.
Soon.
To normalise.
Added Tue Feb 9 12:56:32 2021 at level 40:
I have been unable to meet with Lady Ishuli so far, which has somewhat
delayed my plan. Patience is the hallmark of any future Archmage of the
craft however, and I do not doubt that soon enough such a meeting will take
place. In the meantime though, I have determined that I cannot afford
idleness. Though it was intended to be the second phase of my strategy, I
have moved up the next part of my plan: normalisation of perception of the
village as direct threats to order (which, naturally, they are).
This will mostly be handled internally, and my first foray into the
endeavour has already born both fruit and snag: the Provost was pleased
with the concept but did gently chide me on my depiction of the village. I
will need to frame my approach slightly differently going forward and put
the village in a far more adversarial light, but that is no great hardship.
The Provost is a formidable Archmage, and I believe truly does desire peace.
She is too kind for what must be done where the village are concerned, but
I will not hold that against her. I always knew this process would be
gradual, and I will handle it with the delicacy that it requires. It was a
gamble submitting my exercise without running it passed the Provost first,
but I needed to sew the seeds and gauge her authentic reaction. I think all
in all it went as well as could be hoped.
I am even more certain now that the Vindicator is an enemy, not only to me
but to order magi everywhere. It seems no great secret that he wishes to
remove Necromancy from the Spire if given opportunity, a derangement that
cannot be tolerated. I have not been able to gauge what his contributions
to civilisation are as of yet, but they would need to be beyond simply
staggering to outweigh such an outrageous ambition. Somehow, his influence
will need to be curbed.
If the Provost is an ally and the Vindicator is an enemy, I think in time
the Justiciar could have particular zeal for the task that lies ahead. I
admit I have always had little time for those of her guild when I was young,
but perhaps that was the purest in me. I have grown to appreciate the
particular brand of violence her ilk produce--even if in arcane terms it is
rather lacking in refinement. This is a relationship I will carefully
cultivate.
As my next steps, I will continue seeking audience with Lady Ishuli, and
continue my efforts to reveal the remnants of the antimagic army for the
threat they are to order.
Carefully.
To educate.
Added Thu Feb 11 04:25:22 2021 at level 41:
I have always believed that the fundamental flaw in any prior plan to
address the remnants of the antimagic army have been that they treat them
like a conventional foe to be vanquished. Did our ancestors not forge them
for war? Did they not bend all of their considerable Arcane might to forge
warriors that would rule the battlefields? Of course they did. So then why
do we forsake rationality and seek open pitched battle as our first
recourse generation after generation?
I postulate that education is how we will overcome our great shame. We must
study, analyse, document, and finally publish our findings concerning our
enemy. It is not enough to have one in ten Magi slip through the cracks and
rise to become an Archmage. How many great minds have we lost in the
nascency of their craft due to ignorance of that which they face? How much
has been lost before it could fan that spark of genius potential that is
the province of the Magus of order?
I put to you all today: if we strip our foe of this, their greatest weapon
against our hallowed institutions, victory will follow. Perhaps not soon.
Perhaps not in a mortal lifespan, or in ten. Yet when they find year after
year, decade after decade, that each new student comes forth armed with the
knowing of their nature and the flaws within our ancestors grand design: we
will have our hour of rectification.
Let us slay them with that greatest weapon, the blade that cannot be
parried and the spell which cannot be silenced. The bain of ignorance and
ally of civilisation:
Education.
- The closing statements of Seraxan Althraxten's presentation before his
fellows in Thar-acacia, moments before he was jeered off the podium (set
directly before chapter 1).
To lament.
Added Sun Feb 14 02:13:04 2021 at level 47:
I put pen to paper this day with a rather foreign emotion. I cannot
remember the last time I felt melancholic. Not when they crushed my dream
beneath the heel of mockery in Thar-acacia, certainly. That was different.
This is not bitterness, or frustration, or impotence. It is just... regret,
perhaps. For what could have been.
Provost Stormwind's passing is a blow. Even in my youth, surrounded by the
Magi of Order I can think of few who possessed such poise and conviction;
such drive and such relentless expectations of precision. I will lament
that I had so little time with such an esteemed Archmage, but it is more
than that. Perhaps this is the lesson that all that aspire to Lichdom must
learn. It is one that is abstractly simple, but rather less so in practice.
No matter how great our fellows, they will all die. No amount of genius can
avert that truth. Only the becoming can.
My research into the remnants of the grand mistake proceeds well. My
meeting with the Lady Ishuli was a refreshing affair, without the customary
need for tedious pleasantries so many require the excisement of before
genuine conversation can begin. My research on the topic is advancing
better than I could have hoped, though I believe the Vindicator has already
attempted to poison me mere days after our Provost's passing. Rather crass,
even by my standards - but I can admire the dedication, if nothing else. I
will need to take this confectionary to an Alchemist who can exercise
disgression. Perhaps if toxic substances can be found, I can wield such to
dislodge him from his position--though such has grown magnitudes more
difficult with the Spire's leadership now in flux.
Thus, my next steps:
- Await analysis of my proposal.
- Continue my research in the meantime (note: more information upon the
defenders and scouts must be prioritised: the Commander has contributed
much concerning the berserker school of study).
- Prepare to make initial contact with a certain High Priest. I suspect the
approach may be nontrivial, given my preliminary examination of the terrain
- adequate preparation will be key, as always.
- Seek an Alchemist to determine if the Vindicator did in fact attempt to
poison me with this confectionary. Take appropriate steps, if such does
prove to be the case.
To adjust.
Added Thu Feb 18 09:52:56 2021 at level 47:
If there is one lesson that has been driven home repeatedly since I
departed Thar-acacia it is that, despite the commonly voiced axiom,
problems rarely solve themselves. Therefore, it did come as rather a
surprise to wake to the Vindicator's retirement. I do not know the reason,
and do not particularly care; I can be magnanimous in victory, even if it
was not of my own devising. May he enjoy his retirement, and may his
irrational loathing of the craft die a quiet death with him. It is for the
best, in truth. The alchemist I located upon the Onyx Dream was completely
unacceptable for my purposes. Perhaps I will simply feed this confectionary
to a remnant of the mistake and see what happens: a rather abstract
experiment by my usual standards, but one which should prove enlightening
nevertheless.
However, not all goes well. I did eventually breach the Dead Vale's
formidable defences, but the High Priest seemed lost in some high working
of the craft. A rather troubling issue, as the venture is no small
undertaking. I shall endeavour to continue my efforts to make contact,
though I may need to bring one of my fellow Magi in on the venture in order
to expedite the culling of the ghasts. That is not ideal, but one must be
flexible when dealing with unanticipated variables.
My research has continued to make great strides. I have had recent success
in studying a defender; a rather morbid experience on occasion, for he has
proved a most recalcitrant research subject (though, fortunately, he is
also a vocal one). Nevertheless, progress on locating a scout for in depth
study has continued to be problematic. This must now become my research
priority, for preliminary investigations indicate that perhaps some of the
subtlest works of the remnants are found within this school.
To age.
Added Thu Feb 25 10:47:08 2021 at level 47:
It is a strange thing to be nearing the time when that fundamental decision
concerning one's life must be made.
For ordinary Magi, it is different. The question becomes how the twilight
years shall be spent. What priorities must be raised up and which discarded
due to the ever encroaching time of one's decay and demise. What is the
most economical use of a year, a decade, perhaps a century in the case of
the elfborn.
For those of the greatest of the five magics though, it is different. We
choose the same. We make the same exacting calculation: and yet we must ask
that most dangerous and terrible of questions.
What if?
What if in choosing the manner of our own end, spend a number of those
precious years in a single instant, we gain eternity? What if we fail, and
cast a decade aside in an instant, a failure among a myriad failures and to
be forgotten?
The equation is clear. One can not measure a scant few years against the
unending sands of time, and the fear of failure is a paralysis that I have
long since scorned. The time to turn my attentions to the becoming have
grown close at hand and this must now become a priority, for even in
failure: my foundation has been laid. Perhaps I shall not be the one to
build upon it in the event of disaster, but the stone has been cast and the
avalanche shall follow.
I have learned much of this Dead Vale. Intermediary study while my focus
has been elsewhere was slow, but progress in the ability to navigate the
terrain is consistent. The ancient High Priest has not responded to my
presence so far, but such is not yet cause for concern. No doubt many an
intrepid Magus has come before him only to succumb to the lure of a lesser
transformation. I shall persist in my visitations.
Meanwhile, the Spire is in somewhat of a quandary. Such is inevitable
during any transitionary period, though this one is emphasised by the surge
in the number of enemies of Order of late. It is a rather tedious
distraction from my research, but it is something deserving of my attention.
It is unacceptable that young Magi feel they do not have a viable
institution to progress their studies in: this is something that the former
Provost understood well. To that end, I shall need to invest at least some
of my ever more limited time in recruitment efforts. While I do not intend
to become quite as unfortunate as this imperial agent hawking wares at the
market square like some over-eager merchant, it is an area where our
current efforts as an organisation require improvement.
Then there is the next phase of my research. This is a rather delicate
situation. I nudged the Provost towards making it policy to take the
remnants relic of power when possible; this has already become established
rule in the absence of a Vindicator, which is to the good. Preliminary
investigations can proceed uninterrupted, at least for now.
