Description
You see a short woman with shoulder-length, dirty blonde hair and brilliant
blue eyes. Her eyes are quite large, and their brightness by contrast has
been enhanced using what can only be described as a haphazard application of
kohl liner. Her general facial structure and pointed ears make her look
almost entirely elven, but her small stature and darker skin betray her
part-human ancestry. She is dressed in fine clothing, but in various states
of wear and disrepair. She has liberally adorned herself with implements of
magic, baubles that glow softly in pink, blue, and gold. In particular,
dangling from the woman's pointed ears are a pair of silver earrings set
with glowing blue jewels; possibly no more than costume jewelry, but it is
clear she enjoys the glamour of magic. Around her shoulders she carries a
weathered bag, packed in a manner that could never be called organization,
filled with a great many scrolls, wands, and other magical items.

The Order of the Blue Ferret
Added Fri May 24 15:53:53 2024 at level 43:
The Blue Ferret, a legendary figure of ancient times. A vigilante, a shadowy
presence feared and respected in equal measure. To some, a hero. Little is
known about this mysterious person, except that they were a shapeshifter who
could become a giant ferret, a form that seems to now be lost to time. As a
ferret, they were able to conceal themselves so completely that even those who
could see into shadows could not see them. In this form, they stalked the
streets in the cities of Thera, fighting those who made the people's lives
worse. Of particular interest to the ferret were thieves, apparently. No thief
was safe from the ferret, for even though they could not see the ferret in the
shadows, the ferret seemed to see all. It was also blue, for some reason (as
legend tells it).
When the Blue Ferret passed from the lands, a void was left behind and the
thieves and ne'er-do-wells of the land began to resurge. A group of brave men
and women banded together, taking the name The Order of the Blue Ferret in
honor of their hero, to be a force to fight against the scourges of the land.
The order was not interested in enforcing laws, for they deemed all laws to be
the product of corruption, often serving the very people the order would
battle against. No, they would observe from the shadows (metaphorically,
mostly) and mark specific individuals who they deemed to make life worse for
the people. Those individuals would then be targeted by the Order of the Blue
Ferret, and no mercy would be given.
As well-meaning as the Order of the Blue Ferret was, they never quite
instilled the same fear that their namesake did in the hearts of their foes.
Yes, the name was whispered within thieves guilds, but it was often with a
sneer and a joke. Those marked by the order were frequently able to elude
them, and the lives of the people became worse for the presence of this filth
among them.
In recent times, the leader of the Order decided that what they lacked was a
figurehead, a heroic and iconic image that would solidify in the minds of
their foes. Again in honor of their namesake, they decided that a shapeshifter
would be the ideal choice to become this iconic figure. And so, they began to
adopt children who showed both magical promise as well as having reason to
hate thieves (for those remained The Order's primary targets). They would put
these children through training as shapeshifters, hoping that one day one
would be powerful enough to fill the shoes of the ancient Blue Ferret.
Shalendra Orphaned then Recruited
Added Fri May 24 15:56:11 2024 at level 43:
Shalendra was adopted by the Order of the Blue Ferret when she was very young,
but not too young to recall the horrible events that led to her becoming an
orphan in the first place. The only daughter of a rich couple, the family
lived in a beautiful estate on the border of the Virgin Forest. One day, a
group of thieves broke into the family's home to rob them. After tying up
Shalendra and her parents, the thieves went through the home, stealing
anything they deemed of value. They then left the family tied on the floor,
making some snide comment about how grateful they should be for being allowed
to live. But as night fell, and darkness began to creep over the darkened and
opened home, the creatures of the forest investigated. Little Shalendra had
managed to loosen her bonds just enough to wriggle her way around on her side,
but her parents were tied, helpless! The little girl watched in horror as her
parents were mauled to death by bears.
The grief this caused her was unimaginable. And she would never forget nor
forgive the thieves that caused her such grief.
And thus she was a prime candidate to be recruited by The Order. A couple
within the Order volunteered to be her new family, and together they moved to
the secret home of the Order near Evermoon Hollow to begin the girl's magical
training. She showed immediate promise in the art of shapeshifting, and was
able to do some very temporary partial shapeshifts with very little
instruction. But they were always of strange nature. The girl seemed to love
turning her fingers into turkey talons, for example. She thought it was
hilarious. But she was just a small child, after all.
More concerning to The Order was that, as the girl grew older, she had become
increasingly obsessed with magical trinkets and jewelry, anything that was
bright and sparkly. The Order considered this behavior a red flag, for
hoarding such things was thief-like and could lead to thievery, which they of
course abhorred. So they did their best to dissuade young Shalendra from such
things. But the girl kept a secret stash of items she loved, glowing costume
jewelry and the like. Her little treasures.
A raccoon?
Added Fri May 24 15:57:25 2024 at level 43:
Shalendra was not the only child sent out to learn the art of shapeshifting,
in hopes that one would grow to be able to step into the shoes of the
legendary Blue Ferret. Not the only one by far. Each child The Order of the
Blue Ferret recruited and trained was closely monitored as their training and
growth in the art of shapeshifting progressed. Those who were deemed unfit,
whose forms lacked the use for The Order's purposes, were pulled out of the
field. These shapeshifters would serve the Order instead behind the scenes in
some capacity.
The fitness of Shaelndra came into question when she learned the form of a
raccoon. To The Order, it was little surprise that a girl who had always been
a bit obsessed with shiny things should learn the form of a greedy little
creature obsessed with shiny objects. It could hide in the shadows, and steal
things just like a thief! The Order was very divided on the subject of
Shalendra, because she showed great promise but the raccoon was troublesome to
many. But then many also argued that The Blue Ferret itself was supposedly a
form that hid in the shadows. Perhaps this was a sign that Shalendra was on
the right path, not something to be feared.
And so it was decided to allow her to continue her training to its final
stage. Perhaps her final forms would allow her to become the symbol of hope
they were looking for.
As for Shalendra herself, she was very glad to be allowed to continue. She had
met a lot of people in her training, and was having a wonderful time learning
new forms. She was an easy-going person, who easily integrated with a variety
of social groups. And while she seemed like she did not take a whole lot
seriously, she was always on the lookout for people to report to The Order.
And she was eager to receive that first name from the order, a target to hunt.
But she kept this to herself.
A Hero of the People

Shalendra sat at the bar, surrounded by the empty glasses of drinks she had
consumed. All the pretty colors, red and green and blue and purple. She had
demanded one of each color they could find. Her head was buzzing pleasantly,
her vision not quite but almost doubling as she looked around the dingy inn
interior. What town was this? Shalendra could not recall. She was flying...
and then...
"Hello. You're Shalendra, aren't you?" came a male voice beside her from a
person she had not heard approaching.
She slowly swiveled her head, the room spinning behind the figure of a young
human man in peasant's clothing. "Yep!" she said, flashing her winningest
smile, which stopped just short of the corners of her mouth, as if not quite
able to force itself into full sincerity. "That's me, alright," she slurred.
"You do so much good for this land," the man said a bit shyly. "I can't
believe you're here in... this place."
"Yup. 'Mreal hero oth'a people," Shalendra said. "Whassyer name?"
"Jefrel, son of-"
"Look here, Jeffers. I'm gonna tell ya somethin' Idn't tell mose peeepl,"
Shalendra leaned in very close to Jefrel, the potent array of alcohols she had
consumed wafting over him. Her voice lowered conspiratorially. "I like helpin'
pepl juss fine. I do. But, that's not th'main reason I do it. Every nice thing
I do, thass'a favor someone owes me. Thass'a person who wans'a help me back,
ya know? Who will let me know if they see summ'n on'a list. I get 'em young,
y'see. Give 'em some armor and shit, then they rem'ber me fer t'rest o'ther
lives. Haha!"
Jefrel looked back at the happy drunk archmage, not sure how to respond. The
soft light of Shalendra's magical jewelry illuminated the man's features, a
peasant's face but not unattractive.
"Look, f'get it," Shalendra slurred. "What say you an' me get a room here an I
c'n show ya sm'a my partial shifts? I c'n even become a camel... if yer inta
that."
The next morning, Shalendra awoke with her head pounding and only a foggy
recollection of the events of the previous day. She rolled over, the course
weave of the sheets chafing her naked skin, to see a young human man beside
her sleeping soundly. She sighed, wishing instead she had woken in a field
next to a centaur man. Oh well. She quietly gathered her things, used her
magic to become translucent, shapeshifted into a eagle, and flew out into the
morning air.
