Role
Part X: Senility, Insanity and Rejecting the Prince of Darkness
Added Mon Mar 24 23:25:07 2008 at level 47:
Shenkov stared at the Prince of Darkness. The Beast was enormous.
The horrible voice echoed in Shenkov's head.
"Do you defer to me?"
Seconds, minutes, hours or maybe years later - however long it took to recover
from his awe, Shenkov answered.
"No."
The Prince of Darkness hurled Shenkov out of the bowels of the Inferno. But Shenkov
was pleased. He had seen only two more awesome beings in his life: A... well,
a God and his Dog. Shenkov knows his soul belongs to them.
But as he returned to his guildhall, still carrying the stench of Malebolge,
he stared at the confining walls. It was then he realized something was different.
His body is slipping into a frail senility. His mind, which was never altogether
sane, was spiralling into terrible madness. His grip on reality was loosening.
It is time.
Doubt fills him, but it is time. It has been decades since Shenkov has lived
for himself, anyway. It is the Magic that drives him. The certainty in his
head that Lord Twist loves him, and that his own love for the god (and Dog)
is Sacred. And, quite pathetically, he wants to please them with every fiber
of his being, or die trying.
Death, after all, is what he thirsts for... in one variety or another.
The Dragon's Tooth, the Veil and the High Priest
Added Mon Jan 14 23:14:44 2008 at level 47:
Years have passed since Shenkov made things right with his beloved Lord Twist.
The Love that fills his heart for his Lord (and Dog, too) has manifested in a sort
of giddy detachedness. He has what he had wanted. But contentedness is for the dead
and the worthless, and Shenkov is neither.
Lord Twist has tasked Shenkov with weakening the Veil when possible. And despite his
dislike for those of the Island, Shenkov has obliged in his Lord's name.
But Shenkov hungers to grow closer to his Lord (and Dog, too). He seeks undeath.
And so Shenkov has taken to awaiting the High Priest of Arboria in the dusty, dreadful
halls of the fell church, praying fervently that he will earn a chance to Become a Lich.
Part VIII: 'Nice One'
Added Thu Dec 13 13:29:14 2007 at level 46:
Shenkov is subject to odd mood swings and prone to a general lack of internal editing
due to the conflicting identities within his mind. For some time, this problem manifested
as a complete lack of emotion. Most recently illustrated by a strange conversation with
Twist, whom he has professed his overflowingly abundant Love for, this tendancy could
very easily get him into trouble.
Immediately following his tattooing - and its subsequent removal - Shenkov was left
confused and heartbroken, but infused with the irrational resolve that only the heartbroken know.
He will have Twist's favor back.
Dog's parting words continued to ring mockingly in his ears: "Nice one."
Part VII: Warm (Hot) Memories
Added Tue Dec 4 23:12:42 2007 at level 42:
In the distant dusk, the wild dogs bayed and howled.
The cries were softened by the snow, but still made their way to the homes of
the townfolk. But next to no one heard the chilling sounds over the roar of
their fires.
They were all tucked away in their homes. And even as the sun fell out of the
sky on this winter holiday, the plains seemed a warm place.
In his home, Denneshol sat by the fire and leaned up against his mother,
anxiously playing with his blanket.
"Can I open just one?" he asked, looking up at the bottom of his mother's
fire-lit chin.
She smiled. Only a few wrinkles. Still beautiful.
"Now wait for your father. All he's getting from you is the smile on your
face, and don't you think he deserves that?"
Denneshol frowned just a little bit.
"Yeah, I guess he does."
Before long, his father opened the door, letting in a blast of cold air. His
cheeks were red and his eyes were vibrant. He was carrying a bundle of ginger
pastries that he had miraculously kept warm during the half-mile dash he had
just made from the bakery.
He kicked clumps of snow off of his boots and pulled them off with his feet.
He hurried to join his wife and son by the fireplace with just as much
enthusiasm as Denneshol had shown.
He held out the brown, paper package for his boy. It was tied with a thin
string.
"Pull it, Denny," he said.
Denneshol pulled the string, and the package busted open with a puff of spicy
steam.
Next came the gifts.
Under the gleeful eyes of his parents, he greedily tore the thin paper off of
a box and reached in...
- - -
Exactly 20 years later, Shenkov didn't care what day it was.
Every day is just like the last, except for the day he saw Twist.
He uttered a few curses as he slid down an embankment of volcanic rock within
Mount Kiadana. He scraped his knee. Now, where did that accursed storm giant
go to die?
In here, it was hot. Excruciatingly hot.
Ah, there he is. Lying on his back and sputtering diseased blood. Oh, stop
trying to live.
Shenkov knelt over the dying giant. Within the necromancer, a faintly
familiar sense of glee bubbled out of the deepest wells of his subconscious,
forcing an odd smile onto his face.
He greedily tore the thin, diseased skin off of the storm giant's chest and
reached in...
- - -
Inside, he found a relic of frail, mortal love.
Part VI: Stirrings of the Heart
Added Mon Nov 26 17:37:08 2007 at level 37:
It is the Day of the Bull, the 22nd of the Month of the Winter Wolf.
I have finally looked upon Lord Twist, the God of Magic. He gave me a gift.
He is as glorious as I could have hoped, and more. My only disappointment was that Dog did not
accompany him. I still intend to meet Dog one day. Soon, I pray. But Twist knows of my devotion
and my Love. But he says he will never trust me. I hope these were only words of the here and now.
But most importantly, I felt. My heart warmed. I feel: Angry. Sad. Happy. Ecstatic.
Part V: Into Darkness
Added Thu Nov 22 13:06:07 2007 at level 33:
It is the Day of Thunder, 10th of the Month of Nature:
So complete has been the destruction of my old name that I strain to remember it. I
am Shenkov, now. Whoever that is.
Chancellor Ravon laughed at my broken heart. He believed it petty and human. But I know
that my love is sacred and all-powerful. It is for that reason I destroyed her and made
her anew. It is for that reason I wear her around my neck. We are one. And, through
the Magic within me - once I obtain the guidance of Twist and the Dog who made him powerful -
life, death, this plane and the next will all be the same.
It will be the Eternal Night. The boundaries of this life will open, and happiness and
despair will flood me. I have not felt for so long, but I will feel again.
Very few others will.
Part IV: A Mother's Love
Added Sun Nov 11 23:58:36 2007 at level 13:
The grape burst against the roof of Denneshol's mouth, trickling its sweet
juice along his tongue. He liked that.
His mother couldn't suppress her smile at seeing her son's wry grin as he
chomped on the fruit. She ran over and squeezed him tight against her and planted
a kiss on the top of his blond head.
Denneshol would tend to the livestock and hurry home, looking forward to having
his mother tell him a story and play with his hair. In that way, he would slowly
fall asleep. These were the best years of his life.
His father was firm and fair. His ideas were always progressive - he encouraged his
wife to think and write. He fostered her love of art and literature. They loved one
another dearly.
The father was no less supportive of his son. He encouraged Denneshol to pursue
his passion, and that he was under no obligation to continue the family farm.
He wanted Denneshol to have the opportunities to what he never did.
When Denneshol was 12, his father was kicked by a horse and fell back against
a water trough. His back snapped. His feet and legs were no longer of use.
In addition to being permanently bedridden, his health rapidly declined.
Denneshol's mother paid less and less attention to her son as she did her best
to keep the love of her life comfortable and alive. For Denneshol, this was
devastating. He began having unnatural thoughts about his mother. He wanted
to to beat her, to smash her and to penetrate her. He wanted to make tender love
to her and he wanted to drag her behind a horse. He wanted to destroy her
and create her. He wanted to be with her forever.
Of course, consciously or unconsciously, he couldn't do this. He instead fixated
on Laurelia.
Sweet-eyed Laurelia.
Part III: Falling Forever
Added Mon Oct 29 16:36:24 2007 at level 1:
Candles flickered with a blast of frost the open door let in, and a young family
huddled in the corner, trembling at the sight of a terrible apparition.
"Is there a pain worse than unrequited love?" the dreadful ghost Shenkov asked.
"Soldiers do not fear death. But they fear the loss of love. The denial of
their nature - their glory and their existence."
The father mustered the courage to speak to the shrouded figure, who reeked
of the grave: "Please, Shenkov, you terrible spirit, return to whence you
came and leave my family in peace!"
The ghost answered, wailing mournfully: "It is not your family. It should
have been mine!"
As he shouted that last sentence, his voice cracked. His mortality - indeed,
his late adolescence - was revealed.
Laurelia, trembling against her husband, wondered if it could be him -
Denneshol? It seemed too unlikely to be true.
She watched the figure impale her husband on a sword and wrest the child from
her hands. She watched, petrified, tears streaming out of her disbelieving,
beautiful, sad eyes.
Denneshol wanted to fall into them. Forever.
She watched the baby splatter against the floor and beneath the boot of the
Denneshol the unloved.
And she watched the edge of a delicate spoon came ever closer to her eyes.
And then she watched no more.
- - -
+ Denneshol embalmed Laurelia's eyes (they shrank, anyway, and became
dessicated) and now wears them around his neck. He still loves them, and now
they are his.
Before he set out, he killed his mother and his father. He removed his
father's testicles and his mother's womb.
Those at the village, upon finding the corpses, said that the killer,
probably Shenkov, ate them. Poor Denneshol, abducted as he was, couldn't
possibly have been the terrible ritualist who did this.
The terrible truth, however, would never be accepted into local legend.
Really, he just wanted to destroy, once and for all, the place from where he
came. He is no longer Denneshol. Denneshol is dead. And he isn't Shenkov, the
pitiful excuse for a man that no one truly knew.
He has taken up the mantle of Shenkov the legend.
Part II: Why Pain?
Added Mon Oct 29 16:30:41 2007 at level 1:
Denneshol was cute as a three-year-old and handsome as a teen. He was quiet,
industrious and bright. He was a talented painter. The girls in the town
lusted after him and he had a small farm and a family legacy of horse
breeding.
But he had also inherited a deep sadness. It was as if a hole had opened up
in his soul that he just couldn't close. He felt it yawning inside him. He
heard it scream with emptiness, and echo until he thought his head would
explode.
There was one girl whom he loved, but she did not return his sentiments. She
was in love with someone else.
Whenever he saw Laurelia, he was filled with such a terrible hunger. He
wanted nothing more than to embrace her and clutch her close to him. Her eyes
were the most amazing things he had ever seen. They were piercing, expressive
treasures in her skull. They were as deep and endless as the sky. He felt as
though he could fall into them, plunging blissfully into eternity. He wanted
to know her - to laugh with her and to make love to her. But Laurelia wanted
nothing of the sort. He saw her every day like this.
And so the pain was kept fresh, and every other girl seemed insufficient, as
if to speak with them would be only settling for something less than
Laurelia.
Denneshol would dream of being with her. Smelling her. Feeling her. Looking
into her dazzling eyes. He would wake and weep that it was not true.
So he took to long walks to fight the pain. It helped, a little.
In a light patch of forest west of the town, he happened across a partially
buried plank of wood. Curious, he began to uncover it, tearing away nets of
ancient, dried grass and clumps of dirt and roots.
Beneath it, iron bars and a small, crushed skeleton.
Denneshol was frightened at first, but relieved at the reminder that someone
else's problems had, at once, been greater than his.
He turned the plank over and found faint, dark scrawling. He guessed that it
was written in feces by this unfortunate child.
"no food. nasty shenkov said would not starve us and we wud live for evar."
On the bottom panel, beneath the skeleton, two words were carved, messily -
probably with fingernails: "why pane?"
Denneshol covered up his find again. He told nobody about it, and he visited
it whenever he felt terrible.
Part I: Legends and Lies
Added Mon Oct 29 16:19:37 2007 at level 1:
The dogs ran in a pack. They were one entity.
They kicked up dust in the plains. They trickled over the rocks like the
stream used to. And they arrived at once in this small farming village
outside of Voralian City.
Here, it always smelled like wood wet with beer. Probably because there was
so much wood wet with beer.
When the dogs arrived, the men in the bars and in the fields knew at once it
was a bad omen. No, the dogs didn't cause any trouble, really. They just
trotted around the outskirts and sniffed around. They did whatever dogs do
when they don't have masters. For them, it was probably very fun.
But they had become associated with a shamed, tragic child of their modest
village.
They called him Shenkov the dog-headed. Some say it was because he was ugly
and mad. Others, because he really had the head of a dog. A few say it was
because he worshipped Twist, the God of Magic, who has a link to those
beasts.
Whatever the case, it is known that Shenkov had always sought to cheat death,
and it is rumored that one day, he actually did. A popular tale holds that
sometimes, he haunts the outskirts of the village. He watches the children
play, yearning to take them away and lock them up and cook them into a
potion.
- - -
Shenkov, of course, had long since died. He did lock children up during his
short, terrible life. He tortured and raped them. He wasn't found out until
the end, because he ritualistically boiled their bodies into a sort of sludge
and crushed their bones into powder. He wasn't smart enough to be a real
necromancer. Besides, he never traveled as far as the nearest necromancer's
guild, and he was quite insane.
He did have dogs. He fed them well. He did not have the head of a dog.
He died due to blood poisoning when he tried to inject the aforementioned
sludge into his veins. He had labeled the vial of sludge "The Elixir of
Death." Left unattended, his makeshift laboratory burned down. No one was
sure whose skeleton was found. It was his. But it was buried in an unmarked
grave, just in case it wasn't.
None of this really matters, though. No one remembers these truths.
In this story, the lies hold the power.
