Description
A raptor like creatures looms before you with its outstretched wings spanning
more than twice its height and its razor-sharp talons poised to strike.
Gracefully it hovers, its movements seeming to be effortless. A holy, non-
magical light emanates from its being; a light so pure and radiant that it is
difficult to discern the finer details of its form, save two distinct feature
The first, a thin pink scar that runs across the belly and up from the center
past the middle of the chest. Second, belying the creature's otherwise holy
nature, two radiant orbs burning with the wrath of fire and brimstone pierce
blinding white veil. So fiercely do they burn, it is as if the fires of the
phoenix themselves lash against the orbs in an attempt to break free and burn
their foes.

The Cloaked Man's Tale (Part I)

It hurt now more than usual as he sat clutching his throbbing skull. The pain
generally surfaced in various forms, sometimes an overwhelming sense of nausea,
often times a tightening of the chest where he could hardly breathe and worse
yet, when the hairs on his neck simply stood up as if someone, somewhere were
watching him. This was the price he paid in his pursuit to destroy all those
who walk within the darkness, not to mention being cast out of his home and
disowned from his family. For you see, in Shothak's mind, the only way to truly
and finally cleanse the dark taint from the land, is to remove darkness'
greatest weapon and defiler of many a soul; Magic must be returned to the hands
of the Gods and the Gods alone.
His family was of a proud and pious heritage, one of nobles and merchants. It
was said that many of his ancestors had been priests in the great wars that
raged throughout Thera ages ago. As time passed and balance swept through the
land, most of them put down their cudgels, some taking to the trades and others
to political life. His father's profession was one of trading various ores and
precious stones. Growing up around this environment taught him a darker side of
his family's otherwise pious lifestyle. He witnessed in one cunning form or
another the extent that his father would go to in order to keep his family and
business safe. A curious child, Shothak took to the seedier side of the
business and began to pick up various skills from some of his father's less
reputable clientele. One notable client was a mysterious man, cloaked in what
appeared to be simple attire, nothing flashy and humming like the arcane figures
that came through. Unlike the others, this man taught Shothak nothing of his
profession nor any other tricks of the trade. What he did impart upon Shothak
was a story of a great betrayal and of how magic had come to corrupt the will of
even the most steadfast and pious. Taking the story with a good amount of
skepticism, Shothak set out to validate for himself the horrifying tale. Verify
it he did. He disappeared from his father's shop for many moons into the
ancestral library where he studied and uncovered the horrifying truth of the
cloaked man's tale. With a new found vigor to drive back the encroaching
darkness and a savage determination to destroy the arcane taint that assisted
it, Shothak emerged for a confrontation none would soon forget.

Marching up the broken cobblestone steps he headed straight for his
grandmother's home, the matriarch of the family. He knew that she was not only
an ally of many a great mage, she also was one of the head clerics of the Holy
Temple of Light in his village, not one to be trifled with. Breaching her front
gate, he stepped into what appeared to be a meeting of various nobles and
several of great arcane personage. Unable to control his anger after having
uncovered the truth of the great betrayal, he began casting insults at everyone
in the yard. Looking his grandmother square in her steely-grey eyes, he accused
her of being responsible for many of the atrocities that had ensued during her
time and still ravaged the land and its people today. He told her she must seek
to purge herself of the taint and begin making amends for the atrocities she
allowed to transpire. He then looked at everyone in the room, studying them as
if to discern which of them bore the taint. As he turned back to meet his
grandmother's cold stare, her beak opened and she chirped words he'd never
before heard uttered, all he remembers was that the world went black and when he
awoke he was alone, save for his grandmother looking down at him. "You have
dishonored yourself, your family and most of all your ancestors. May their
curse weigh upon you with an untold guilt until you have found redemption for
what you have done." Quickly he leapt to his feet, his wings thrust outward
as he took to flight like a phoenix. "By the grace of Shokai alone shall I be
judged," he exclaimed as he flung himself over the railing and downwards through
the clouds, wings tucked tightly into his chest as he sped towards the land
below.
Just as quickly as the pain had begun, it subsided, clearing Shothak's mind to
once again focus on the task at hand. All this was the past, what mattered now
was finding the Village and proving to them and most of all himself, that he has
what it takes to see the war to its end this time, leaving no defiler left to
spread their wretched seed.
A Perch Amongst the Huts

Many moons have passed since Shothak first stood before the Noldarian smith, the
fresh scent of magi blood upon his hands. Now, here he was, a scout for the
Village and doing what he does best, striking quickly and quietly. Much of his
time has been spent over the years honing his skills and driving off the dark
beasts of the land, all the while remaining vigilant and ready to pounce at a
moments notice. Yet, with all he has done to drive back the darkness and
wretched magi taint on all fronts, the pain within hurts more now than ever.
What pains him most is seeing his so-called brothers of the Light, those
amongst the holiest in all the land, succumbing to the disease of the
magi. Too many has he seen quaffing the potions as if hooked on some fiendish
drug. While his blade quivers in anger, he knows that they might yet be saved.
It is for Shokai to judge their souls when their time has come. Now he must
trudge on, preaching and educating in what little manner he can to those he
feels might still be redeemed. The others, may Lord Shokai purge their souls
once and for all from the planes of existence.
The Breaking of Parity
Added Fri Jul 2 22:01:27 2010 at level 43:
Many a reason coursed through Shothak's mind. Perhaps it was his
youthfulness, his inexperience in battle, his zealousness to right the
wrongs brought unto the land by his family or a myriad of other thoughts
which cursed his frantic mind. There was many an excuse but none were the
real reason Shothak broke the sacred code of parity in battle, thus bringing
dishonor to himself, his Village and most of all, Lord Shokai. The most
disheartening moment, was that Shothak did not even realize he had broken
the sacred code until the heavens themselves called unto him, revealing to
him his dishonorable act. For his dishonor, he was called to face another
who had dishonored the Village, amidst the circle of rites. Offered a
chance to save his honor in victory of battle, Shothak stood fast and fought
courageously to his death.
Exiled from the Village, he wandered high into the great northern mountains
where after many moons he came unto the shrine of Lord Shokai. For more
nights than he can remember, he prostrated himself before the altar, seeking
penance from the Shepherd of Light for the dishonorable acts he had committed.
All was quiet.
Shothak knew that without parity of battle, one would never be able to find
the true path to honor, and without honor, what is to separate the Pious
from the wicked? No, he had brought a shame unto his Lord that only self-
sacrifice could cleanse. Swiftly he grabbed his wakizashi in his
outstretched right hand, plunged it deep into the left side of his stomach,
pulled it to the right and then quickly from the stomachs center brought it
up past the middle of his chest as he gasped a final prayer to the heavens,
"Lord Shokai, forgive me..."
A final Look Back: The Resurrection and Exile

Visions of holy men and women chanting, praying and performing varying
rituals above his dirt mound flashed before him as he looked up at his buried
form. A multitude of demons, servitors and all manner of specter came
clawing and pulling at him as he strove to banish them from his presence.
Despair, hopelessness and dread were all about him, yet, within he felt a
burning sensation, a fire raging so intensely that would he be amongst the
mortals now, certainly he would burst into ash. For many a day this ensued,
time seeming to stand still. There were no signs, no visions of Gods to
guide him. The only thing that kept him from succumbing to the dark forces
clawing at his soul was the faith he had brought with him from his time
amongst the living.
Choking, gagging, a feeling of suffocating came over him as life was breathed
once again into his body. Scratching at the dirt with talons, beak and wings
he worked his way back to the surface, bursting through the earth, wings
outstretched, eyes set ablaze with fire and a shrill cry emitting from his
renewed form.
Shothak the Lightborn had been reborn unto the land as Shothak the Fireborn,
Exile of the Great Siege, Prophet of Parity.
His rebirth and exile only strengthened his resolve and belief that the war
he waged was just and true. He continued to scout for the Village and hunt
the wretched as he knew how. Yet, a deep seated fire burned within him, a
burning so intense and so unfathomable that he knew he could not rebuild his
perch amongst the Scouts, this time, he would build it amongst the Berserkers
and destroy every last minion of the dark taint known as magic. In Shothak's
mind it was not just those who used the arcane arts or wore its magic upon
their visage that were tainted; it was all those who aided it in the war,
bringing it onto his doorstep that were to have the taint cut from their
mortal flesh, not even those hiding behind the Paladin guild would be safe
should they succumb to its succor.
The Road Home

His perch built anew within the village, Shothak took to the siege with a
renewed vigor and purpose. The burden of engaging the self-proclaimed of the
Light seemed to be easing, as he saw not the person before him, but only the
force of evil that needed to be cut from the mortal flesh. Yet, another pain
gnawed at his skull with a renewed vigor, a deep-rooted pain that could be
remedied in but one way.
He was nearly there, the flight up the mountain and through the uncharted clouds
was more treacherous than he had remembered. Arial City somewhere far below and
even Shokai's shrine far off in the distance, not much further now. Coming upon
the lonely clouded rock, he noticed the marred fence, talon marks sunk deeply
into the wood. He was home.
Before he could take another step, a bony talon lay itself upon his shoulder and
a familiar elderly voice flowed forth, "I have been watching you for some time,
youngest of grandchildren, come inside, we have much to talk about."
Inside they sat for many hours until the sun made a complete rotation and was
now beginning to set again. The entire time, his grandmother sat behind a
simple wooden desk, her back closely to the wall and seldom did she lean forward
except at the rare emotion Shothak was able to pull from her stolid visage. But
manage to raise her ire he did. "You see, grandmother," Shothak chirped curtly,
"the magic is the breath of evil, its dying grasp, just when we think we have
snuffed it out, some fool dogooder of the Fortress will still be dabbling,
using, thinking he can control what is not his to be controlled and the darkness
will begin to encroach all over gain. No, grandmother, the final battle cannot
ensue until the great siege is over and the taint is once and for all purged
from the lands, regardless of the vessel it chooses to hide in." A look of
disgust poured over the old bird's face as she leaned forward to give Shothak a
righteous tongue-lashing. Her beak opened enough to emit a faint gasp as her
last breath began slowly seeping from her lungs. "I too," wrasped Shothak, his
talons run through her neck, "have been watching you, grandmother. I shall
begin to right the sins of our past starting with you. May the Ta're guide your
soul to the purified light..."
Slowly, deliberately he walked away this time, a look of neither pain nor joy
upon his visage. Instead, what overcame him was a sense of righteous
determination as he looked over his shoulder to see the house consumed in a
blinding white glow of flames. Gripping the railing one last time, he uttered a
prayer to Shokai as he leapt over the fence and soared out into the encroaching
twilight.
