Description

Here stands a short, very tough looking little woman. Although her frame is no more than three and half feet tall, bulging, taut muscles ripple along this gnomish girls stumpy limbs, giving her the appearance of one who relies on physical prowess. She is clothed mostly with bones and rough stones and other things found in the wild, but instead of looking ragged her trinkets seem fortified by time and weather. There are fresh bandages on some of the multitude of cuts and bruises decorating much of this womans body, other wounds are covered in dirt and wrapped with leaves or weeds, and her exposed flesh is beige and scabrous with scars that appear to be centuries old. Stringy, unkempt platinum hair springs from beneath her helm and cascades down her shoulders and over her face, it looks like it was last cut with a rough blade, and even that was a very long time ago. Lustrous amethyst eyes flare beneath her wild bangs and are framed by an otherwise aloof looking face, but the detachment of this thin, craggy face is incongruous with the utter truculence that emanates from her eyes. Even though the strange little creature carries herself like an urchin who doesnt know how to act in proper company, something about her gives the impression that she is no child.

Role

Scribbled on a piece of parched bark found in the wilderness.

Added Fri Jul 25 20:25:06 2008 at level 51:
After three hundred years, I decided to learn to write and see what all the
fuss was about. So far, Im not so impressed with it, but I dont know any
magic words. Maybe a wizard could make this scribing worth his trouble. At
least its easier to keep my thoughts clear on the bark than when I get riled
up. Ive lost most of the words that I picked up so many years ago on the
streets of Cragstone, but a few still come back in the heat of a fight
sometimes.
Im not the same person I was back then, though. The closer I grow to the
ancient spirits that still inhabit these lands, the more my own spirit, as
well as my appearance, grows freely, as it should. I sense spirits all about
the lands that know themselves as Thar-Eris. Some are spirits of animals,
other are more basically elemental. Why, just the other day I sat in the
tunnels just below Cragstone and meditated by a nest of large, pale
scorpions. We had called them deathstalkers when I was enslaved in the mine.
They sensed me as a kindred spirit, and let me be. The wonderfully terrible
dragons scattered across these lands seem to be ancient, as well: fierce
relics from the old world.
Feeling these spirits enables me to feel to focus my battles on those that
will hasten the Return. I feel as if my own spirit has found its purpose now,
as if I finally understand the reason behind all the fighting that Ive been
doing my whole life. The wolf knows not why she hunts, nor does she need to.
She still culls the herd, as is her place. I also finally feel close to the
earth, and I understand why I did not, even when I lived on the underside.
Because I did not know the truth of what the old world was, I did not feel a
kinship with land. Now my connection to the earth is much deeper than most of
my unenlightened kin, no matter what they may claim.
Oddly enough, I have also found a home. And believe it or not, of all places
that it could be its in a Tree, no less. A Tree! The Imp laughs at us all,
truly He does. Just because Ive found a home, though, doesnt mean that Ive
forgotten that not everybody can be trusted. Especially not other svirfnebli,
although Nizi was an exception to that rule. Im not so sure about that
Sniggledof, but he might be alright. Time will tell. Maybe I like him because
hes a transmuter, like Macha. She has made me rather found of those of her
guild by her own good deeds. In Macha, Ive finally met a person who deserves
the title that they carry, and I am proud to call her the Sunwarden and give
to her the respect deserved by the title. She proves to me that not all
titles are more hollow than the tree I peeled this bark from, even if most
are. Shes nothing like that Dortangil in Cragstone. He doesnt deserve that
crown on his head any more than I do.
I want Dortangil off that throne, but I dont have a plan for what to do
after I depose him. If its not done correctly, another fool will pick the
crown up and continue his reign, and I certainly cant have that happening.
Perhaps charging headlong into battle with him isnt the best idea, at least
not yet. That seems more and more to be the case in my life, and even though
I cant stand the thought, it seems like Im going to have to learn my
lesson. Sometimes there is more to a war than the combat itself

How Shumwrahm was brought into the Refuge

Added Tue Jun 24 09:14:31 2008 at level 46:
Shumwrahm awoke one crisp, clear morning from a long rest in the shadow of an
ancient obelisk. She had bedded down under a hedge at the edge of the
Halfling lands after a raid on Upper Cragstone where she had killed Darrgan,
the Captain of the guard, and that pathetic Jarajin and quite a few of his
cow-eyed lackeys, and then broken into the warriors guild and paid for her
training with the very things she had pilfered from the guardsmens corpses.
If they were going to hire more guards, she thought to herself, which they
surely would, at least they wouldnt have to mine anything else to make new
equipment for them. Because she didnt think the guild-master believed her
story about finding the things in the Azreth wood, and because seeing all of
the buildings she had been locked out of as a child made her blood boil, she
hurriedly finished her training and made her way out of town just as the
alarm was being raised. She had been caught once years ago in Cragstone, but
then she was only a child. She easily crushed the skulls of the two gate
guards who tried to stop her with already bloodied flail and slipped out into
the vast plains unseen.

As Shumwrahm rubbed the sleep from her eyes and stretched her tiny, muscular
frame, she heard a voice greet her. She whirled to meet the voice, but saw
absolutely nothing where it had come from. As Shumwrahm reached for the
handle of her flails, the voice soothingly assured her that no harm was
meant, and that she was a friend. She asked what a little svirfnebli was
doing sleeping out in the bushes. As Shumwrahm spoke with the disembodied
voice, she began to sense that this was a kindred spirit, but one that was
wise far beyond Shumwrahms years. The voice seemed to sense the same thing,
for finally she revealed herself as Macha, the Sunwarden of Thar-Eris.
Shumwrahm knew little of the Ancients, but as she followed Macha through a
mysterious, haunted wood that Macha said had once been her home, the
Sunwarden explained many things that resonated with Shumwrahms own spirit.
After being shown a magic mirror that transported the two halfway across the
world, Shumwrahm found herself camped under the biggest Tree that she had
ever seen, speaking still with Macha about Ancient ways, and the ills and
injustices of the world around them. Shumwrahm realized that there was much
fighting to be done in order to hasten the inevitable Return of Thar-Eris,
and that she could help in that respect. As the Sunwarden Macha welcomed her
into the Refuge of outlaws and freedom fighters, Shumwrahm realized that for
the first time in her life, she was home. More importantly, Shumwrahm finally
had something to fight for, rather than having only a world to fight against.

Child Labor

Added Mon Apr 21 19:10:09 2008 at level 30:
After Shumwrahm was forced onto the streets of Cragstone, she quickly became
involved in thegang warfare lifestyle of forgotten children, living as much
as a part of a litter of rabid wolf-cubs as anything else. She grew used to
stealing from the baker for breakfast, and her propensity and talents for
fighting quickly gained her a reputation as the fiercest girl in the dark,
hidden society that was Cragstone street life. Eventually though, she was
caught in a sweep made by the Cragstone guard designed to clean up the city.
The children rounded up were promptly relocated to the nearby diamond mine
and put to work.

Shumwrahm was forced to slave away in the mine, but she quickly realized that
she could slide her hands out of her shackles. She bade her time, making
friends and waiting for the slave-masters to drop their guard. Late one
night, Shumwrahm heard the blessed sound she had laid awake every night
waiting for- she heard low, rough snores echoing down into the slave quarters
from the nearby guardpost. As quietly as possible, she slipped her right hand
out from the shackle and unlooped the length of chain that had been wound
about the post that was her headrest. She quickly snuck to the guardroom and,
peeking around the corner, saw that she hadnt woken either of them yet. As
she inched into the room, she realized that she wasnt going to be able to
reach the guardsmens heads while they were sleeping upright. In what most
strategists would have deemed an unwise tactic, Shumwrahm began to climb up
onto the large wooden desk both men were seated at. As quietly as she could,
she began to loop the length of coiled chain attached to her wrist (which was
longer than she was tall) around the neck of one of the guards. By the time
she cinched the chain and the guards eyes popped open his throat had
collapsed from the pressure and he fell to the ground wordlessly. Much to
Shumwrahms surprise, though, the chain caught as he fell to the floor and
dragged her down with the dead guard.

Nobody was more surprised by all of this commotion than the other guard, who
by this time was on his feet, groggily looking around for the source of the
racket. Shumwrahm fled from the room just as the guard shook his and cleared
his eyes. While she ran back down the corridor to the slave quarters, she
picked up a pick that was lying on the ground. With one deft strike, she
split the link keeping the other dozen children chained to the wall. As she
turned to face the swiftly approaching bootsteps, Shumwrahm picked another
shackle up from the ground by its still attached chain and began to swing the
shackle in circles above her tiny head. She spun to meet the guard just in
time to watch the guard crush the skull of one of the smaller boys with his
truncheon. The sound, like a dropped melon, sent Shumwrahm into a rage.
Screaming, she lept at the guard and swung the shackle in her right hand,
shattering the guards knee and dropping him much closer to Shumwrams own
eye level. On his knees and blind with pain, the guard stood no chance.
Shumwrahm spun in a tight circle and brutally lashed the chain still attached
to her left wrist across the guards face, leaving his nose barely hanging on
his bloodied face. Before the guard could even hit the ground, the other
children were upon him wit

Childhood

Added Mon Jan 28 17:44:55 2008 at level 15:
While she was growing up, Shumwrahm loved to fight. Loved. to. fight. She
damn near killed her mother in labor, and her first official act as a baby
was to kick the nurse maid square in her wrinkled, old chin. Things didnt
really start to get out of hand, however, until she learned how to walk.
After that, Shumwrahm would start fights any chance she had. While her choice
of target was never particularly predictable, it was entirely egalitarian. As
a child, little Shummy started fights with other kids. She started fights
with furniture. And neighborhood pets. With big rocks. The elderly.
Mechanical gadgetry. Waterfalls. And of course, she started fights with her
family. Consequently, Shumwrahm was kicked out of her parents house as soon
as she could take care of herself.
