Description
Before you stands a simple looking human man. He is neither tall nor short
for a human, standing about 5' 9" tall. His hair has been shaved to the skin
with what must have been a very sharp knife. The missing hair lends a depth
to his eye sockets that makes them seem dark and mysterious. His eyes, full
of intelligence, are an ordinary mud-brown color but shine with unusual
fervor. It is difficult to say if those eyes are merely reflecting inner
faith and vigor or if they have actually begun to take on a piercing cat-like
quality. He is lean and tanned, clearly having spent a life outdoors on a
diet of simple, scavenged foodstuffs. This diet has also left his face
hollower than it might otherwise have been and makes his cheekbones protrude
and his clean-shaven jaw appear angular and strong.
Role
A simple beginning for a simple man.

Sindrai, by the standards of heroes, is a very simple and ordinary man. Where
so many adventurers are marked with horrible scars, elaborate tattoos,
stunning good looks or any number of noteworthy traits - Sindrai is average
sized, average looking, brown haired, brown eyed, slightly plump and an
unremarkable fellow. Where many escape terrible circumstance or answer calls
to incredible adventure Sindrai hails from a small, insignificant farming
village where little ever occurs. He was not orphaned, tortured, raped, or
visited by demons or angels. He was born of ordinary folk, raised to be a
simple farmer, perhaps read an inordinate amount but was otherwise typical.
He is simple, but intelligent, thoughtful and not given to accept anything as
truth without careful consideration. There, really, is where the story
begins. In his village he was pleasant and mostly unnoticed but his mind was
always at work contemplating and questioning everything he saw.
The questions we ask ourselves shape our thoughts, our thoughts shape our
actions, actions shape our lives and lives shape the world. Therefore it is
important to ask yourself good questions.
The "good" question for Sindrai was, "How should I live?" When he came of age
he had no sure answer to this question. Yet, he knew enough to know his
purpose would not be found in a hut in an unknown and unimportant farming
community.
He has some simple beliefs:
1) He can be better person. He can improve everything from his magical craft
to his very soul. Purity in deed and thought is his utmost goal. Too much
selfishness, too little work and conviction are the roads to Ruin.
2) Some things, especially Purity, are worth fighting for. Though he is no
great warrior he believes if simple men do not stand for their beliefs they
will just be sitting when Ruin comes.
3) You can hear your thoughts better in the quiet of Nature. Cities are the
constructs of a society that assails your individualism. If you want to think
for yourself pull away from the gray grip of civilization.
4) One should approach life with passion, dedicated to their beliefs, and
always in search of personal growth and betterment.

The Jungle, The Jaguar and the Refuge
Added Sun May 27 10:31:36 2012 at level 28:
Sindrai knows his path is lit by the Sun. Too fragile are the natural places
of this world against the insidious threat of Darkness. The Scions and
Imperials, to him, are the most terrifying entities in all Thera. The Light
and the world both howl for their destruction. Who will answer this call? Who
will stand for the righteous and pure?
There are two groups. The Outlanders of Thar-Eris and the Holy Brigade of the
Phoenix. Sindrai councils with representatives of each (as previously
mentioned - he does little without tremendous research and thought). He
decides the Maran are dangerously limited in vision, thinking too little of
preservation in their search for the destruction of evil. There is,
allegedly, a counterbalance in the Acolytes but Sindrai is unwilling to bet
his personal Purity on another man. While he does not like the presence of
the Reavers in the Refuge he would rather have evil's tendrils reaching in
the open than infest him subtly from within.
Sindrai believes the best way to avoid giving evil a foothold in the heart is
to spend time in the Sun. Meditation by a calm brook, atop a mountain, under
a waterfall - these quiet places are where the whispers of the Light can
reach the heart.
Of course, joining the Refuge adopts other enemies he may not have made. The
Blood Tribunal, for example. A harmful organization, by Sindrai's measure,
but not necessarily evil by its intent. Dwarves, minotaur, conjurers - not
necessarily the enemy of a Maran but certainly an enemy to Thar-Eris and that
gives reason enough to earn Sindrai's opposition. However, the rise of
Thar-Eris cannot come at the sacrifice of Purity. Therefore, Sindrai will
avoid conflict with others of the Light if at all possible.
Sindrai has heard tell of a ghostly Spearmaiden in the Ruins of a jungle who
guides even simple men on their quest for Purity. It is said her way to
Purity requires Dedication, Courage and Combat - and though Sindrai is no
great hero, he believes this a path worth walking. So with ordinary eyes
heavenward he goes in search of the Ghost and her Ruins.
Random thoughts on Sindrai.

Sindrai is starting to evolve away from the "aw shucks" farm kid. I thought
it was important to work that persona at first because he heroed so young.
(He was under 30 hours with 51 levels, a/b/s and all his controls mastered.
Thanks, bonuses.) So even though he was a "powerful magician" he was still
wet behind the ears and I wanted that to come across. He really didn't have
any right to be talking tough to more proven heroes. Now that he's
middle-aged, bloodied and an "initiate of the Jaguar" I feel him becoming a
little more sure of himself.
I suspect this to manifest in the way he deals with other characters. I find
more and more he says things like, "I started an ordinary farm kid, now I'm a
powerful force for the Jaguar." Instead of where he started which was, "I'm
not strong or powerful but I'm dedicated," or "I'm not worth much but I'll do
what I can." He's also started to preach more and to try and persuade others
to see things through his filter.
Next time I get a chance to play with Baer I'm going to let some of these
things, along with all his time in the woods and eating scavenged fruit, come
through in his description as well.
Sindrai is also very interested in learning how to be the best Warden he can
be. He wants to make the branch look powerful and vibrant. Once he gets into
the Refuge he'll pour a ton of effort into this via interviews, talks with
others and aggressive PK and raiding. Hopefully Sindrai and I can put the
goody outlanders on the map!
The Mournful Mists of Melancholy
Added Fri Jul 6 05:53:09 2012 at level 51:
The Mists
She called him, "The Watcher in the Mists" though he did not fully understand
why. Time passed, events transpired and Sindrai knew the words to be
prophetic. His life was once innocent, that of the simple farmboy. Then he
grew into a powerful sorcerer, the Sunwarden, and all seemed clear. But when
the world faced destruction at the hands of the Scion he chose a path that
stole the luster of his Purity.
Oh, he was not dark or even gray. Just not the beacon he was intended to be.
It was then the Sun, his source of Purity, hid from him in the mist. It was
there to be sure, somewhere, glowing ambiguously and lighting his path - but
no more was it a beacon to navigate by.
He was deserted, he feels, by the one who was to understand him best,
Kycalbrum in Sindrai's hour of need. His most promising recruit, Danyll, had
taken his own life because he lost his swords. To find comfort he sets his
heart upon a woman whom will never take him, Salyeris the Commander of the
Battleragers. He is once again alone on his branch amidst a sea of Reavers.
There in the mournful mist he watches. Occasionally the impure crosses his
path and he strikes like a vicious predator. There in those moments of combat
all seems clear once again. But the clarity always fades like the departure
of a lover in the morning and he finds himself literally and figuratively
very alone.
