Role
1) Shadows of the Underdark
Added Wed Apr 26 23:40:33 2023 at level 38:
In the southern reaches of the underdark rests Teth Azeleth, city of the
drow, where neither the inhabitants nor the sinister plots of those who live
there are revealed in the light of day. Shadow within shadow, order through
chaos is the means to which the matriarchal hierarchy of the Houses
determines their rankings of power.
The weight of such can be crushing for some Houses. Yet for others, it is an
opportunity, an opportunity for advancement if one is ambitious and careful
enough.
Skry was young for the dark-elf females among her middling House, but her
House was specialized. In this was her Houses advantage. Usually one
House would try to take over a lesser House that threatened it, or perhaps
was ambitious enough to eliminate one above it to increase its own rank if
they saw it weakened in an opportune moment. However, Skry's House was
unusual. They specialized in assisting bigger Houses in their takeovers by
going in at the start of the assault to eliminate the chaos mages and magical
defenses of the house itself. The mission was success or self-elimination.
Teth Azeleth did not tolerate failed plots.
And Skry loved it. Trained in the guild of the Anti-Paladins with an arsenal
of tools for both priest and mage, she loved using her very magic and martial
skills to eliminate the mages who relied on their chaotic magic in her home
city. The Anti-Paladin guild, influenced by demons and devils, knew much of
chaos and order, though her kin clearly favored unbridled chaos.
There was an advantage to those who understood chaos magic, but had the
discipline and methodology of order, to seek out, dampen, and eliminate the
chaos mages. And she was good at it. Her future seemed bright for caverns so
dark.
2) An Ill-fated Undertaking
Added Wed Apr 26 23:45:00 2023 at level 38:
The Fifth House of Teth Azelth was the target. Skry's House was assisting
the Third House in eliminating the lower House. Third House against the Fifth
House? They had no chance and with Skry's own House's mage hunting
abilities, it was all too easy. And the new archmage of the Third House was
paying handsomely besides.
The early night started out like so many former missions, with her Houses
mages placing the darkness spells to cover the beginning of the assault from
any witnesses who were all too willing anyway to turn a blind eye. They moved
in fast, dispelling the magical traps with spells, and their rogues who could
detect such things, disabling the wards. Quick were they to the sanctums of
the magical faction of the Fifth House, for this was their mission, their
training. The Third House would deal with the regular soldiers and priests in
the main assault as they followed up Skry's House on the fifth Houses
defenses.
Skry rushed into the master mages laboratory in the Fifth House and
suddenly skid to a stop, much of the rest of her familys House behind her.
There stood not the expected figure of the Fifth Houses master mage...but
the Archmage of the Third House who had hired them for aid in the assault.
And she went cold. They had been betrayed.
The Archmage of the Third House gave her a sinister look as the Fifth
Houses soldiers and priests could be heard outside the mage quarters
drawing them into the trap. Newly risen and a chaos mage of growing talents,
suddenly Skry realized the Fifth House was never truly the threat to the
Third House. Skry's House had been the real threat to this new Archmage.
And he was eliminating them before another House could use their services.
And then death on her family descended. She didn't think as she saw what
must have been a side room for conjurations. Could it possibly be a room
outside the Underdark's strange transportation properties? The methodical
anti-paladin chose chance, and throwing herself in the direction of the
conjuration room, uttered a teleport spell...and the world flashed.
3) Whirl. Bang. Flash.
Added Wed Apr 26 23:50:04 2023 at level 38:
Light. Blinding light.
She had never teleported much, living in the underdark. And Skry was
certainly not ready for the instant shift from underdark shadow to the
surface world's hellfire sun.
And she was falling.
Whack. Thwack. Slam. Falling again. She grasped at roots and rocks as she
skidded down the Beaten path.
A sentry seemed amused as she went flying past.
She collapsed in a heap of travelers and squished worms. Skry stood suddenly,
and cast them a look of disgust for intruding on her fall.
Now to find out where she was. She carefully moved along the beaten path in
the direction of a large city downslope and to the north. Was that a paladin
hanging from the city wall? Thats a choice.
Walking through the city gates of Udgaard, Skry found what would be her first
surface home. But she would need a name and a new mission. Something suited
to her talents. It did not take long to realize that for a supposed city of
order, the corruption was wrought with chaos. The city's watch might hate
criminals, but the laws were hardly clear.
And so Skry Spellshackle adapted. The city of had a new mage hunter,
specialized in rooting out the chaotic and renegade mages hold up within the
city. She would make a name for herself, seeking out those hiding from the
Udgaard watchmens searching eyes.
Like her House, Skry Spellshackle knew there was opportunity for those
ambitious and careful enough.
4) Seeking Order Amidst Chaos
Added Thu Apr 27 00:00:17 2023 at level 38:
Skry Spellshackle was frustrated stepping out of the Udgaard mage laboratory,
leaving the chaos mage slain on the floor. She carried the head of the chaos
mage in her left hand. Those Udgaard watchmen sure did like hanging heads
from the battlement walls.
The room was strangely silent, a result of her deafen spell no doubt. Yet it
did not mask her sigh as she moved on from her 20th mission.
The pay was good. She heard there might be better elsewhere. But what really
bothered her was the endlessness of it all. The city was broken. They sought
order, hunted criminals, sent her on her missions, yet order was rarely ever
achieved. She was no closer to her own lab and the orderly research she
sought into her guilds secrets.
In her opinion, order in Udgaard was so corrupt that it was all a faade.
Yet the ability to adjust to the surface world? Hunt non-drow mages? Develop
her spells and battle prowess further while she survived? Invaluable, but she
wanted more. She always wanted more.
Standing in the east Udgaard plains, Skry took a walk among a slaughtered
camp of Onehearts as she often did to brighten her mood. There on the ground,
a tribunal insignia caught her eye. She paused, holding it up, running her
hands over it. There was a golden pill on the ground. She tried eating it,
but nothing happened.
Skry Spellshackle looked to the south. Towards where she imagined Galadon
would be. The Oneheart hunting party that had come through this had been
wearing Tribunal insignia. They had been mentioning a bull named, Provincial
Pharagon.
She thought about it. She was young. But when had youth ever limited the
talented. South she went out to seek out this Provincial named Pharagon.
5) Frustration
Added Thu Apr 27 00:04:21 2023 at level 38:
Skry Spellshackle, now a magistrate, sat in her room in the spire, frustrated
at her assigned patrol, despite her obvious value to the Spire. Voralian
City.
Galadon to Hamsah to... Voralia? She knew Provost Tiarumas was punishing her.
Not for her failings, but for her obvious talents. The city of Voralia must
be protected, but with no guild to welcome her, what a nightmare patrolling
had become! And when she joined the spire, all she had wanted was a trade of
services so she could build her own laboratory in Galadon. A place where the
more chaotic magic of the anti-paladin guild could be studied in a more
orderly and methodical fashion. Walking the edge of chaos and order.
"Admit it Skry, you know what really is bothering you." She whispered
viciously then answered her own question: "Cyash!"
Had he been sent from the Underdark? Was he part of the Third House even now?
Sent to eliminate her? She had tried to engage him on a dozen of occasions.
All of which she lost, and a couple of which left her killed and giving her
own shards of her soul. She hadn't succeeded in sleeping him ONCE! Him...a
dozen times her. She fumed. And how he LOVED to profess the power of
unbridled scion magic and even chaos over the limitations of the spire!!!
And he was awake again. She didn't move, afraid to leave the spire. She
hated herself. Think, Skry, think. Why is he so different than everyone else?
He's better than you and you know it. So you just need to be more
methodical. More orderly. Plan better! Yes, his unbridled chaos magic has
strength, but it also has disadvantages.
So she plotted. She would try once more. She had skipped killing a gnome as a
potential ally. Now she would ask this new friend, Joxis, for a favor. He
would wake her if she got slept the 12th time.
She set out to hunt.
6) Confronting a Nightmare
Added Thu Apr 27 00:10:13 2023 at level 38:
Firenewts. Not enough last time, but she brought them again. She had shield
and aura rods. Also not enough last time, but she had no barrier. This time
she would add the one purple potion to resist mental. A herald conjurer had
suggested that, though she had no idea that they helped with sleep
incantations as suggested.
She tried to lure him to the holy grove, but instead met him on the eastern
roads. She went to sleep him and failed! He went to sleep her in combat!
So...she cursed! He fled and return to sleep her again and failed! So she
blinded! And then he teleported and was gone.
"Joxis, find me Cyash" and I will pay you well... "Okay!" the
gruelingly cheerful gnome responded.
The crag soarer soon reported back. "He's sitting in Akan!"
She went there. Knowing his blindness was gone. That he was cursed, but could
teleport easily. Was he just sitting there? Maybe he was sleeping and
didn't see her approach. No...of course not. He was waiting. The nemesis
cast sleep as she entered the western market square...
It failed! But one thing had changed...the aftertaste of the yellow enlarge
root still sat on her tongue. She had planned. Enough sleep games! She
bashed, and he went flying! She bashed again, and despite her lack of
training, he went flying again! A rush of ecstasy...Cyash's soul shards
flowed into her pitchfork of lightning.
And now the race was on, his unholy weapon was nowhere to be found...but she
had learned much in defeat. It was a totemic spear, never the weapon he
walked around with and...and...and... there it was. Hidden in a bag.
The ghostly form of Cyash returned. He did not touch a single thing, nor ask
for his weapon back. The dark elf kin grinned evilly at her. HAD this chaos
mage been sent from the underdark? This anti-paladin who preached unbridled
chaos over order? He spoke, "Well done...yes...well done."
And then he cast a spell and ripped himself open in truly demonic fashion.
And so her nightmare, her adversary, disappeared. Just like that. And as a
trophy, she took the totemic spear, a gift towards her own foray into the
study of her guild.
