Description
Before you is a figure clad in mostly loose, baggy clothing. Over the
clothing, various pieces of armor are strapped tightly to his body. It looks
somewhat odd, but you can tell it affords him an unparalleled freedom of
movement. A sword hangs at his hip and a light buckler is strapped to his
back. Both of which he seems to know how to use. Young still, he yet looks
confident in his movements and he bears the grace of one trained in the
martial arts. Long dark hair is tied into a pony-tail by reddish leather
strips, much like the nomadic peoples of the Araile deserts. Likewise, his
skin is darkly tanned and his eyes a dark golden brown. His features are
slightly sharp and angular, but the tall, dark youth might be considered
handsome by human standards.

Childhood

Sumeraj: (Sue-mer-ajj)
Summary: Born in the Araile. Deep ties to it as home, but little desire to
return. Family moved to Hamsah for economic reasons. Enjoys music on a
profound level yet has no talent for playing instruments or bar room dancing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Born to the nomadic peoples of the Araile, Sumeraj spent part of his youth
amongst its red sands. At an early age he took the oath to the Araile,
cutting his hand and proclaiming:
"Let my blood nourish the hungry sands, and may this moonless night bear
witness to my bond with the Araile itself."
A ritual many of the young nomads take. To this day he feels a spiritual
connection to the sands as his home, but his people no longer worship the
Araile as a god like they did long ago. The bond is there, but it does little
to hold him in place.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Later in his childhood, Sumeraj's family moved to live within the walls of
Hamsah Mu'tazz. Many nomads take this course. With the promise of wealth,
trade, and the easy city life right at their doorsteps it can be hard to
resist. At first Sumeraj protested, but once in the city, he heard the music.
Every tavern they passed let loose the sound of music from its walls. Bards,
troubadours, and whole bands playing their chosen tunes for the crowds. His
protests were quieted quickly indeed.
As he grew older, he spent most of his evenings at the taverns on the Street
of Dahab. Forbidden to enter the taverns by his parents, he would sit and
listen from outside. To avoid the ruffians that often roam the streets of
Hamsah Mu'tazz, he would keep himself hidden behind barrels or in alleys.
Away from prying eyes.
Alas, Sumeraj showed no talent for the playing of instruments or the wild
dancing that often accompanied it. However, the rythm was infectious. It
spoke to and pulled at his soul in an indescribable way.
The Martial Art
Added Thu Jun 30 02:21:33 2011 at level 10:
Summary: Sees assassins performing katas in a parade dedicated to the Sultan.
Realizes a link between martial arts and rhythm. More calculated and
meaningful than the wild barroom dancing. Joins Royal Society of assassins
for training. No interest in assassination. Wants to perfect self (mind,
body, and spirit). Seeks challenges to overcome. Wants to find out more about
ancient assassin magics.
-----------------------------------------------------------
***THWACK***
The sound of flesh as two bodies slam to the mat. Interlocked in what could
be a deadly embrace, if it were not training. Rhythmic and fluid motions take
them through various forms, strikes, counter-strikes, and locks. Sumeraj
sweats furiously as he fights his opponent and struggles to keep his focus.
One of the final tests before he is to complete the initiate training at the
Royal Society of Assassins. No interest in becoming an assassin, he will not
become a full member, but the basics of martial arts mastered he will move on
to find his own way.
How did he come to be here? At the age of fourteen he witnessed a showing of
the Royal Society's finest fighters. A parade in honor of the Sultan. Their
rhythmic kata's were mesmerizing. They moved with purpose, focused and
calculated. Immediately he began inquiring about how to train under the
Society's Guildmistress. Showing some promise, he was offered initiate's
training.
Through this training he learned the martial arts and found what he sees as
his own way to connect to the rhythm of life. He sees the art as both a
utilitarian and spiritual focus. The guild taught him that with great enough
focus, one could achieve a true unity and balance of spirit, mind, and body.
FEEL the rhythm of reality as it ebbs and flows. Sumarej's life goal was
realized. He would dedicate himself to the martial arts.
To perfect the self, there must be tests and challenges. To this end he will
explore Thera. The Guildmistress spoke of ancient techniques from those who
founded the guild. Some minor control of magics that further enhanced the
fighter's abilities. Perhaps born of the link between mind and body, or even
the spirit. In any case, little is known of this supposedly black arts and
Sumarej plans to find out more.
Five Faces of Evil
Added Fri Jul 1 22:05:23 2011 at level 14:
Summary: Finds Five Faces of Evil. Removes taint. Taint still affects him.
Drags at his mind and soul. Gifts the bracelet to Neltouda's deckhand.
Sumeraj happened upon an arcane looking bracelet in the temple of Hamsah
Mu'tazz. Just lying there on the ground. Abandoned. Odd that it seemed hidden
to normal man's eyes. He picked it up and was immediately taken by it. The
visages within drew his attention and he could not help but wear it.
Sensing the taint, he sought out a paladin before it could affect him. The
taint banished, Sumeraj saw no harm in continuing to wear it. Just a pretty
trinket now.
Later, he discovered a pair of warriors murdering the innocent citizens of
Voralia. Normally, he would call on the lawmen to deal with them, but instead
he found himself stalking the two. Waiting for a chance to end them. Before
he even knew it himself, he was on them. It was all he could do to stave off
the attacks of the two well trained fighters. Then, of a sudden, the bracelet
gripped him. Burned his skin and blistered it deep under the surface. At the
same time a jet of flame ringed the dark-elf and ended his life instantly.
Taken aback, Sumeraj retreated to safety. This evil artifact had not been
cleansed fully. Somehow, it managed to retain some semblance of its former
evil. The bracelet bade him attack the two. It wasn't his mind, he was
certain of it. Knowing he had to be rid of it, and unbelieving that any
mortal could handle its power, he decided to take it to the shrine of a god.
Captain Neltouda, one he heard sails the open sea in a magnificent ship,
perhaps she would enjoy the trinket.
Unable to find audience, and unwilling to bear the object, he left it in the
care of Captain Neltouda's deckhand.
New Resolve for New Goals
Added Wed Aug 10 17:41:14 2011 at level 21:
Summary: Defeated some foes. Seeks Lord Marcatis or his priests to learn
about "Form and Spark" as a mean to find perfection. Spoke with Gleebrok and
may become Tribunal. Gleebrok gives name to old assassin magic and suggests
speaking to Lord Twist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sumeraj continues his training. A few have fallen to his art and innocents
have been spared. Knowledge gained and challenges overcome. Feeling
confident, he has set his eyes further along his path.
In his travels he has learned of the Lord Marcatis. His followers preach of a
"form and spark" and returning to the whence one came upon death. There is
some correlation here, between what Sumeraj believes to be the trinity of
Mind, Body, and Spirit. The mind and body are aspects of the form, and spirit
the spark. Eager to learn more, Sumeraj now seeks the priests of Marcatis and
hopes for an audience with the Lord himself.
Gleebrok was the first he approached, though not a priest of Marcatis. The
Magistrate has had dealing with Lord Marcatis as a matter of his position. An
offer was put forth that Sumeraj join the Spire, and he now considers it.
The Provincial Magistrate also gave Sumeraj a lead in his search for the
ancient magic of his guild. A name to the techniques! Hellfire he called it,
and a magic blindness. Surely there are more wholesome forms of this magic,
but it is a place to start at least. Gleebrok spoke of his Abbey as a source
for this knowledge, but said abbey is unreachable for now. However, Gleebrok
mentioned that finding audience with Lord Twist may allow him to gleen more
specifics on the techniques.
