Role
The Old Man's Friend, Taerg and the Rage
Added Sat Oct 8 00:16:47 2011 at level 41:
"Oh dear oh dear, let me tell you about this duergar I know. He
is quite the nasty fellow. In fact, his life was pretty much
driven by his rage. Terrible duergar, bald head, nasty attitude
and a chip that does not come off the shoulder, but instead
just gets bigger."
The old man chuckles in front of the fire. He is sitting there
in a small hut talking to a gathered group of young duergar
children. He is also duergar, and his skin is ashen black with
veins of white streaking across his flesh.
The young duergar chuckle while a few perform mischief to their
fellow children sitting and listening. The old duergar snarls
at the mischief makers and the small children instantly shape
up and the story continues.
"Rage, my boys and girls, is one of our gifts. Yah cannot
give up yah gift, but this is the story of a duergar who tries
and tries and tries. Why you say? Because his rage just got
him in trouble, so much trouble, to survive any longer, he
had to swear it off. He had to control it, or else it would
burn him whole!"
The old duergar chuckles again. "Rage, this is a story of rage
and how its beauty has a black side. One even blacker than our
own skin." The children all lean forward, waiting with baited
breath as the story begins to unfold from the old duergar's
voice.
Rage Leads to Slavery (Part 1)
Added Sat Oct 8 00:18:30 2011 at level 41:
"Underdark, always a dangerous place, but the duergar I knew,
named Taerg, called it his second home. He never did mind
slinking through its caverns. He was always very adept at
avoiding the many dangers there. He was a scout by nature and
loved it."
"This scouting allowed him to find a little known outpost
for a mixture of kin, just near the dark elf city. It was not
well known, and only the most nefarious or those seeking the
anonymous nature of the place sought it. It was quite a difficult
place to get, even for Taerg."
"It was here Taerg had his favorite meading hole. And this place
was known for its most rough and tumble ways. Taerg didn't care
because he knew how to handle himself in a tussle and always
had a good eye for trouble before it started."
"This night, a pillaging group of fire giants had arrived. They
looked very regal and dangerous, and seemed to be celebrating a
recent victory. One particularly large one was handing out the
mead while holding close a glowing axe at his hip. Taerg didn't
like him at first glance, and seeing that weapon, he didn't like
him even more."
"'Anti-paladin' Taerg growled."
"It certainly was an anti-paladin, a famous one, named Tohr from
Kiadana Rah. Taerg hated magic, mostly because it lessened his
skills of service. But also because of its nature. Simply wrong
in his eyes. It just didn't feel right, and those who practiced
it in front of him usually found themselves dead shortly after."
The old duergar interjects some words to the children. "Not all
of us duergar hate magic, but there are reasons to do it. And
Taerg had many more reasons for it. But that, my children, is a
story for another time."
Rage Leads to Slavery (Part 2)
Added Sat Oct 8 00:20:10 2011 at level 41:
The old duergar then continued the story. "Taerg made up his
mind to cause this one trouble, kill him, and snap that axe of
his. He knew it was an unholy weapon, and judging from the stories
circulating, the fire giants recent pillage was not for gold. It
was for souls for the weapon. And those who were missing was
a duergar scouting party sent against the dark elves. In that
weapon were some friends, and they didn't deserve this."
"Taerg, being the raging duergar he was, walked right up to the
fire giant as he was passing out mead. 'Yah dead.' and that was
all that was said. Tohr was stabbed in the chin with a piece
of broken obsidian taken from the wall of all places. Tohr
slumped forward and Taerg went into a blinding rage not seen
since the infamous Dern decided to find his way to a dark elf
temple."
"From there, Taerg took the axe from Tohr as he fell and snapped
it in half. Fire giants all around were shocked but only for
a moment. They then bound upon the duergar. The breaking of the
weapon caused Tohr's body to explode in a rain of blood and
gore. This flesh spray gave Taerg what he needed, and opening.
Blood rage filled his eyes and he started grabbing and snapping
flesh and bone anywhere within his reach. Be it fire giant, a
serving wench, or innocent bystander. It was a a bloodbath."
"Dozens of fire giants died, two duergar wenches, three drunks
sitting at the bar, a targ who got in the way, seven chairs,
three tables, twenty seven mugs, and about ten gallons of mead.
The bar itself barely survived the rampage. The only saving
grace, if you would call it that, was a fire giant necromancer
who admired this chaos and Taerg's brutality. He wanted the
specimen for himself. With a simple word, Taerg's rampage
was brought to an end, "grzzs". Taerg was now a captive of
the Kiadana Rah family."
Slavery Leads to Control, Well Kind Of (Part 1)
Added Sat Oct 8 00:23:19 2011 at level 41:
"Taerg woke up deep within some kind of mountain. Huge bellows
could be heard in the background. Where he was exactly he was
unsure. But he did know he was in Mount Kiadana. He surveyed
around him and saw he was in a pit. Bones were littered everywhere
from what looked like many battles. Taerg's keen eyes could
tell by the scraps and breaks of the bones. The one thing he
had not lost is his ability to scout."
"A bellowing voice came from above, 'Greetings Taerg, you are
quite the nasty one. Lucky for Tohr he had magic that protected
his soul and could be placed back into another body. Unfortunately
for him, you broke his most prized axe which contained many
souls. It will certainly take him many years to get another of
its kind.'"
"Taerg bellowed back, 'Comes in reach of me whoever yah are, and
I'll give yah a bloody hug.'"
"The voice just chuckles. 'I know of your rage and strength, I
will stay out of the way. But I want to study it and see if
I can incorporate what it is about into my own studies. Time
for the first lesson.'"
"Right after the voice stopped a spell was cast, Taerg could tell.
And his mind filled with belittling remarks so personal they
hit to his very core. And out from his core came his rage, like
a gyser. His eyes turned red with blood and he lost control"
"This seemed to be what the necromancer wanted. From out of
a locked gate came a young duergar woman. She was fearful and
shocked to see a duergar in such a state. She screamed but
that only drew attention to her. Taerg, in his state, tore
her apart, limb from limb, using her own leg as a weapon to
cause her body more damage."
"The voices ended quickly, and so did Taerg's rage. Before
him was a disembodied female duergar, an innocent. A victim
of his darkest parts. He was shocked, and this would not be
the first time."
Slavery Leads to Control, Well Kind Of (Part 2)
Added Sat Oct 8 00:25:07 2011 at level 41:
"This experiment continued over and over. The voices, the rage,
and the slaughter. Next was another young female duergar, the
next a dark elf boy. The next baby targs, the list continued.
Each time a massacre of godly proportions. And each time
a lesson of remorse. The necromancer was gaining some kind of
essense from each experiment. And using it in his own creations
to create almost unstoppable zombies. Taerg's rage was the
fuel for these creations."
"Taerg knew what he was doing, and slowly but surely he began
to be able to control his rage. He needed to, as he was seeing
how terrible it was, even for a duergar. So on the next time
for the experiment to happen, he resisted the voices enough
to look like he was out of control, but he was not. When the
gate opened to push in the next victim, Taerg instead was
upon the opener. He snapped that thrall's neck without thought
and rushed out of the cell cavern."
The necromancer was so shocked he didn't have time to react
to contain Taerg. And Taerg, using his scouting and sneaking
abilities, was gone into the caverns never to be seen again.
The necromancer was angry, very angry, as Taerg was the best
source of rage he has ever found. He will look to find him again.
Lucky for the necromancer, he can sense rage in extremely high
levels. Bad for the necromancer is Taerg knew this. So
the battle was on. If Taerg went out of control, the necromancer
would be close to finding him, and controlling it would not
be an option... or would it? Taerg needed to control the rage
and be better for it."
But, But, But, Where did he go?
Added Sat Oct 8 00:26:22 2011 at level 41:
"But but but!" said one of the children. The old man stopped
and waited for the question he knew was coming.
"But where did he go?" yelped the excited duergar boy.
"Well, Taerg thought the best thing to do was to find a place
where he could prepare himself for a possible encounter with
the necromancer. And he also wanted to put himself in a place
where rage was all around him. Hopefully to mask his own if
he ever snapped."
"Where would that be? Duergar city?" another duergar guessed.
The old duergar chuckled and said, "No no, this is a place
where rage is so common, it is upheld as an aspect of those
who live there. The Battlerager Village."
All the children gasped. They had heard of it, but only in
scared whispers by mages. They knew of the deadly berserkers
whose rage killed armies.
"He went there and became one of those nasty berserkers!?
But then wouldn't the necromancer find him right away?",
a smart duergar girl stuttered.
"Maybe, if he sought to be a berserker. But he did not. There
are others in the village who do not embrace rage. Taerg
went against his nature. He choose to be a scout.", the old
duergar cackled with ironic glee.
The children muttered outloud. "He's stupid. Duergars are
not scouts!". But the smart duergar girl nodded knowinly
and whispered just enough for everyone to hear, "Taerg is
not stupid, thats extremely smart. A scout trying to control
his rage in a place of rage."
