You look upon a charming wood-elf of about six and a half feet in length. His golden hair almost shimmers in the light and flows freely, except for the braided forelocks that are tied back around his head. His face is strikingly handsome, with a strong jawline, chiseled features and ivory skin. He evokes memories of an expertly carved statue. His eyes shine with an intense, emerald green. His build is lithe yet strong, much like a predator that lacks raw power, but relies upon speed and hidden strength. His shoulders are broad and give him a somewhat imposing stature. His armor appears to be well cared for although it is mismatched in the manner of most travelers. You notice a necklace that appears to be woven of gold strands and ivory hanging around his neck, hanging from it is a golden ring, set with five twinkling diamonds that remind you of a constellation in the northern sky.

Role

Taivu Ard'Riogh

- Taivu comes from the Ninth Tribe of the Wood-elves, who originated around
the Pine Forest. Part of their creation legend is that they are descended from
the offspring of both Yean and Kastellyn, referred to as the Grandmother and
the Grandfather. The religion of this tribe is driven mostly by the ideas of
Kastellyn's religion, placing a very high value on glory, achievement and
generally becoming legendary. The specific prayers and traditions are greatly
influenced by the songs and writings of Yean. This also created a tribal
tradition that that closely aligns with the beliefs and traditions of the
Village. He has never known a world in which magic is acceptable in the hands
of mortals.

- Taivu was born the fourth son of the chieftain, which didn't leave much room
for any kind of upward mobility in his tribe. As he grew, he became ambitious
and even a bit jealous of his brothers. He came to resent his position as the
fourth son, particularly on account of two of his brothers being spoiled and
generally foolish. This all came to a head when the oldest brother died in his
coming of age ceremony. Instead of allowing either of his next two brothers to
take on the mantle of heir, Taivu challenged them to ceremonial combat. In
that combat he killed one of his brothers and was cast out from his tribe. In
his anger he stole the Ring of the Heir, and vowed to return to his tribe and
take up the mantle of chieftain after earning his Legend in the south. This
created a great division in the tribe, as Taivu was very popular, and had
consequences that Taivu did not intend, and will not come to realize until he
is much older.

- Taivu is very much a politician, with drive and ambition to greatness. He is
exceedingly kind and forgiving to those he sees as friends and allies, and has
great hate and disdain for his enemies, or those who cross him. He is not
above lying to get his way, and sees his end goal as righteous and just. Thus
the ends always justify the means.

- Since coming south and learning more about Thera and the other tribes of
wood elves, an idea has begun to form in the back of his mind. What if
Chieftain of the Ninth Tribe is not his destiny, but in fact High Chieftain of
all the wood elves? He has even heard tell of teachings that are focused on
creating a new order and way of things. Perhaps he will seek these teachings
out, once he has become a hero of his guild.

The Prodigal Legend Rises

Woodsmoke and juniper overwhelm your senses as you peer through the dark and
mist. You are in a village of wood-elves in the far north of Thera. You see
an old crone, smiling and laughing with some young children, motioning for
them to join her around the fire.

"Come children, gather 'round, and let me sing you the song of Taivu Tulvas,
who the wind tells me is now called Taivu Ard'Riogh, Drillmaster of the most
sacred Battleragers."

She begins in a sing-songy voice, striped with age and gravel.

Far to the south on bloodstained stones,
A boy no more, now bound to glory,
Cast aside by choice, by consequence,
He left his loyal lands, an old story.

To the village, his heart won't still,
He carried on to earn his name,
Where wizards scheme with wicked wills,
And vengeance veiled each vict'ry gained.

The winds whisper his name with awe,
Through the blood and cries and smoke,
His foes fall fast, their names cast down,
His spear a storm, his soul awoke.

Each vict'ry earned in blood to fame,
Each triumph told with thunderous tone,
The prodigal son, through power and pain,
Now wears a crown, his own legend grown.

"Come now Viisas, don't fill their head with that nonsense," a passing woman
snarls. "Taivu killed his brother and stole the ring! Curse his name!"

One of the older children snatches up a rock from the ground and whips it at
the passing woman's head, striking her just behind the ear. She staggers and
hits the ground with a thud, the furs and skins she was carrying dropping to
the ground.

The Prodigal Legend Begins

The struck woman and supporter of the old king scrambles to pick up the furs
and skins she was carrying and scurries away. The gathered children laugh,
and the one who threw it turns to Viisas the crone and says excitedly, "Now
sing the song of his victory over his brothers!" Cries go up and she clears
her throat.

Under the bleak and brooding sky,
The call went out, a challenge cried,
A father failed, his heart awry,
The heirs at war, to surely die.

Two to one, the challenger young,
The eldest certain, but soft and weak,
Youthful rage, warcries in the lungs,
This day would be mournful to speak.

He struck his foes with righteous might,
The eldest did crumble, fall, and fade,
A flash of fury, the second sees night.
The stones are bloodied, the tribe is saved.

Our hero stood, his gaze unbowed,
Silence fell heavy, over the throng.
One dead, one vanquished, a father cowed.
Surely now, his legend to be seared in song.

The kings voice, both sure and swift,
Kinslayer his call, piercing the air,
Cast out the youngest, a family rift.
He would not have, the ring of the heir.

Off the open neck, Taivu snatched his prize,
Gazing to his people, to his father he scoffed
His gaze meeting the king's welling eyes.
A legend born, he held vict'ry aloft.

Off into legend, did Taivu stride.

The children smile and excited chatter overtakes the crowd. The old king is
finally dying, and Taivu will be able to return home and take up his rightful
mantle as their chieftain.

What they do not know, is far to the south, as Taivu's legend grows, so does
his ambition, and Chieftain of the Ninth Tribe will not be enough for him.

Role Explanation

The story portion of Taivu's role will be written in a series of songs and
poems sung by his tribe with the whole finished role being the Saga of Taivu
Ard'Riogh.

While the role chapters are in chronological order from the perspective of
the events taking place around the singing of the songs, the songs themselves
will not be put in chronological order until they are all finished.

He Remains Outside the Door

Viisas the wise woman ducked into a room dimly lit by a small fire. The smell
of pine sap was heavy in the air. She smiled grimly at the small gathering of
mostly young wood-elves within.

"Viisas, when will he return? Why hasn't he come back?" asked one of the very
young children. His brother will root us all out if he doesn't come back soon.

"Now, now child, his path is one of legend, one The Grandfather would be proud
of, that his acolytes would sing songs of. Listen now, to the newest verse of
Taivu's Saga." Softly did the soothing voice of Vissas rise...

Yet he remains outside the door,
His rightful throne a distant dream,
The legends lift his name to soar,
His oath to Battle, he does deem.

The fire fierce, burns in his chest,
The wayward son, with might and skill,
Has yet to seek the soil he left,
And turns not toward his hearth's warm hill.

Though time and tide may twist the tale,
The prodigal's path is paved with pride,
A king of combat, crowned by crime,
In every victory, far and wide.

The winds will whisper, wane, and wait,
But till he's home, he's lost to fame,
He stands to guard the Village gate,
He will not abide, the kings blame.

He will not return north this fall,
His focus, his oath tied to the War,
A legend in the hearts of all,
Yet he remains outside the door.

A grim silence fell over the small group, and a few sniffles could be heard
in the back. While Taivu still had many supporters amongst his tribe, some of
them were beginning to lose hope that he would ever return to them.

The Victories of Taivu

Viisas looked around, and knew she had to raise the hopes of those still
outwardly loyal to the rightful chieftain. She cleared her throat, and raised
her voice much more loudly this time. There were looks of apprehension on some
of the faces, songs of Taivu had been outlawed for some months now. Still, her
gravelly voice rose, and with it, the spirits of the room...

His enemies now, an endless tide,
Do strike and snarl, do claw and tear,
Monsters born of magic, greedy and snide,
Our hero unafraid, outnumbered he is aware.

Beyond eternal nights of nothing, days of dread,
He fights and fights his fury won't fail,
Through endless wounds and rivers red,
A legend forged by song and tale.

His enemies, with hated breath,
Unleashed their wrath, unleash their sting,
On and on they come, they seek his death
The hero's spear does brightly sing.

The long defeat, the bitter fight,
Standing tall and strong, he wipes his brow,
They bled his soul, but he won the right,
The Grandfather would honor him now.

"Remember this always my children," Viisas intoned, "Taivu is our rightful
chieftain, and I am certain he would have the blessings of not just the
Grandfather, but the Grandmother as well."

Taivu Claims the Dawn

Clamoring voices and the din of strife rose in the gathered Tribe, who now
all stood in the center of the village, watching their honored wise woman who
was tied to a towering post and set upon a waiting pyre. They watched in fear
as the Usurper lit the pyre with a pine-tar torch.

Viisas bellowed, and it seemed as though the spirit of Grandmother Yean had
entered her body.

"Listen to me now, remember the beginning of his legend! Remember his rise,
where he claimed victory, and his brothers claimed fear! Remember the first
verses of his saga!"

The flames began to lick at her legs, and the scent of flesh joined that of
pine, but she began the song, and her voice did not waver.

A gray morning, a heavy rolling sky,
Deep Pine Forest, shadows slip and creep,
Bold Taivu sets forth with steely eye,
He seeks a dire wolf, poised to reap.

His step is sure, his spear in hand,
The wind holds its breath, the forest still,
He slips through the forest stands,
A whispered song, an iron will.

A quiet step on the forest floor,
A flash of fur, a fleeting sight,
The moment neared, his legend and lore,
The wolf stood proud, ready for the fight.

With nimble nerve and heart aflame,
The hunt engaged with artful grace,
Taivu took aim, he would make his name,
The wolf would feel death's embrace.

The dance of death begun, caution fell,
His courage held, his pride now soared,
A prince, a hunt, a tale to tell,
The kill was his, the prize in store.

With youthful might, his victory won,
The forest sings, the sun shines through,
A hunter's legacy had just begun,
The prince had claimed the dawn anew.

"He claimed the wolf, he claimed the dawn, he claimed the ring, he is the
rightful king! Hail Taivu Tulvas! Hail Taivu Ard'Riogh!" Viisas boomed out
and the crowd winced. With that, the flames overtook her fully, and she
sang no more songs.
