Description
This elven man's face is radiant with vigor. His fair skin is tanned from
constant exposure to the sun and elements, and his muscles are lean and
supple. He stands just about six and a half feet tall. Long, golden hair
has been tied back in a ponytail with a simple leather cord. His pale green
eyes seem to shine with internal light, which in combination with his
beautiful elven features gives him a serene, friendly appearance.
Role
A higher calling

All his life, Talimor dreamed of being a hero like the one in the stories.
When he was a young boy, his father would return from his travels with
incredible tales and songs that he had heard or written: mighty warriors
triumphing over evil, powerful sorcerers performing feats of great magic,
blessed priests communing the very will of the gods. Talimor's two older
siblings wanted to become bards like their father, to meet the heroes of his
stories and sing songs of their deeds, but Talimor longed for more. Rather
than simply witnessing the heroism of others, he felt called to greatness
himself. While they studied music and dance, he went outside, pretended the
garden tools and instruments were swords and spears, and fought long battles
of his own imagination against the forces of darkness.
As Talimor grew older and his father's journeys kept him away for
increasingly long periods, he spent more and more of his time watching the
elven guard practice and keeping them company, admiring their training. Some
of these men and women saw his potential and began to teach him, informally
at first, but soon he was joining their training sessions and well on the
track to becoming a warrior. He would return home only to sleep and eat,
unless his father was home.
Divine intervention

Wine, iron, and blood were all Talimor could smell. He felt a slight pain in
his knees, and a greater pain in his side. It seemed like he was being
dragged across a floor, or perhaps a street.
"What should we do with this bastard, eh?"
"The boss said to have some fun before we do him in."
"Ha, ha, ha. Boss knows best, yes he does."
A dagger rended his skin, then another. Laughter continued to echo around
him, the two bandit henchmen clearly enjoying themselves. The torture
continued for some time. Cuts, punches, then broken bones, strangulation. He
started to wish for death.
"Seems like he's about to go, eh."
"Dumb bastard. After what he did to me hand, I wanted at least another hour
of fun out of him. Oh well." The thug plunged a dagger deep into his side.
Talimor screamed in pain - then, for an instant, there was nothing. No pain,
no sound. Time felt as if it had stopped. In the silence... he heard a voice,
clear and pure. "TALIMOR. THIS IS NOT YOUR TIME."
He tried to cry out in response, but could not. "KNOW THYSELF." The voice
rang out again in his mind, a command that would not be ignored, and the
Light itself could not have been more beautiful. He felt his body begin to
burn. In an instant, the sounds came back and time returned to normal.
Talimor opened his eyes...
"Oi! Look here, his eyes!"
"What the hell? He's too young for a Maran!"
"Run!!"
Talimor's eyes glowed with holy fury, and a nimbus of Light burst from within
him, healing his wounds in an instant and causing the bandits to stumble and
fall. With another burst of holy energy, Talimor moved dispassionately from
one man to the next, and when he was done they both lay dead at his feet. The
Light faded, and he collapsed again, exhausted and bewildered.
Talimor's path
Added Mon May 29 20:35:48 2017 at level 16:
Talimor's near death at the hands of the bandits humbled him. His dreams of
greatness were largely replaced by dreams of service, although it might be more
accurate to say that his understanding of greatness had been adjusted by his
experience.
The touch of the divine upon him that day drew him towards the paladin guild. He
will still put to great use many of the skills he learned from the guard. His
fate is to serve the Light - like the heroes of his fathers' stories, he wants
to learn to lead and to command the love and respect of others, so that he can
play his part in unifying those of good heart and soul against the forces of
darkness and evil.
He offers prayers to Ignolmeer, seeking guidance as he sets out on his journey.
He has sought out the Maran, and seeks to become a Squire of the Fortress of
Light.
A visit home
Added Sat Jun 10 11:33:50 2017 at level 42:
After many years away, Talimor paid a visit home. His parents had known since
the incident in his youth that he was fated to make a lasting mark on the world,
but imagine their surprise when he strode in the door to their home cloaked in
a mantle of holy flame and carrying a shimmering white staff of pure energy.
"A Maran, my son? Light's blessings on you and all of Thera, how wonderful! Come
and tell us everything." And so, they talked, and laughed together, and shared
stories until well after the sun's light had passed and already come again.
Talimor told them of his first encounter with Lord Ignolmeer, and how the God
Elf had shown him how to use his mind. It seemed in nearly everything Ignolmeer
said there was both explicit and implicit wisdom to be gleaned, for one inclined
to consider his words. Talimor told them the story of his pledge to the Fortress
and spoke, although not at length, on the terrible and righteous burden that
those who walk the narrow path undertake so that the rest of the world need not.
As he spoke, he saw a tear in his father's eye, and he smiled. "Don't be sad,
father. Lord Ignolmeer put it best, once: 'The truth of being able to maintain
goodness in the world is being able to defend it with violence when necessary.'
And the Elder Prophet: 'Terrible deeds with pure intentions. As long as the
heart is pure, we will find forgiveness.' I've made my choices, and I'm at peace
with them, and I pray that the world is better off for it."
Suppressing a shiver, Talimor's mother wiped the tear from his father's eye and
smiled back at the young elf. "We are so proud of you, son." Conversation turned
to other matters, but sooner than not it was time for rest. Talimor laid his
hands on each of them, then hugged both. "Light bless you and strengthen you
both. I am always here for you."
The branching path ahead
Added Sat Jun 10 11:34:21 2017 at level 42:
Being raised him to Maran filled Talimor with inspiration and with confidence.
He continues to focus his efforts on the war against evil, and decided to make
gains within his guild in order to stand alongside others who seemed less than
certain of their ability to deal with a certain anti-paladin.
He prioritizes seeking out and destroying the wicked, but also considers ways to
best focus his efforts on doing the work of an Ambassador of the Citadel. A
conversation with Kanlax Eldraugh helped to shift his thinking on his role as a
Paladin faithful to Lord Ignolmeer as less "service" in reaction to the desire
of another and more of "intentional, useful, action."
He thinks of his duty to the light in much more practical terms than he did when
he first began to pray to the Elf God. He is focusing on sharing his strengths,
shoring up his weaknesses, and encouraging others to do the same.
His main strength right now has to do with tactical decision making before and
in battle. He doesn't always make the right decisions, but he knows the value in
setting up a battlefield before a fight, and in executing a plan of action that
will not only win a battle but will kill those in need of killing. He tries to
constantly reflect on recent battles with the other Maran and the Squires, and
to help the Squires especially consider what all parties involved could do
differently the next time to see better results.
A main focus of improvement continues to be his knowledge of useful trinkets,
potions, and arms and armor. His experience has been that helping others equip
and stock themselves effeciently is one of the best ways to inspire friendship
and help them fight more effectively. So, he has decided to make it a point of
emphasis to expand his own knowledge - as Kanlax pointed out, you can't teach
others what you don't know yourself.
