Description
Heavily cloaked in lightweight, black garments of various materials, this man
is attempting to remain concealed. Through various slits in his wardrobe,
slick, silvery feathers glimmer slightly. Very slim and graceful, yet
athletic, at just over six and a half feet tall, it is clear that he keeps to
some sort of constant physical activity. With most of his head tightly
wrapped and veiled, all that is immediately visible is a short, rounded, gray
beak with steaks of black and a sparkle in his deep, brown eyes. The scales
that cover his silvery-gray talons have a dull sheen and it is obvious by the
numerous scratches and scrapes on them that he has done his best to keep
their shine to a minimum. Other than the dagger in his belt and the various
pouches stealthily attached to his frame, not much is discernable on this
heavily enshrouded young man.

Shortly after the appearance of this poster, I've been told by his old fellow
gang members that he slipped onto a ship headed for Hamsah Mu'tazz in order
to pursue his dream of joining the Empire and commanding a legion on the high
seas.

After receiving the news of his father's death, Tanpolhin's escapades took a
turn for the worse. He became more gruesome, more thuggish, more fierce. He
has always wanted more. Greed is certainly driving factor in his life and
this was only multiplied when the loss of his dad was coupled with the
"fishing trips" with his uncle. When speaking to those of the nearby
villages, I've discovered that he used this as an outlet for his emotions.
On one particularly bloody raid, he was recognized by one of the victims. He
never even returned home. Immediately, at the age of only 12, he ran to the
nearby bustling city of Seantryn Modan. Come to find out, this is a dream
that he had always had.
Following in Tanpolhin's footsteps, my investigations have led me to the
docks of Seantryn Modan. Naturally, this is where he came upon running away
to the city. He found comfort with the gangs of the docks. An assortment of
misfits and runaways, they prey on the ships coming and going from the port
and are famed for their brutality. It is in this environment that Tanpolhin
learned of the Empire and its goals and he saw his chance for power. From
the ages of 12 to 17, he lived on and around these very docks honing his
skills as a brawler, as a thief, as a hustler. It is here that he learned
the tricks of the shadows and, with his agility, slipped into them with ease.
It is also here that he received his nickname, "Duckbill." It was given to
ridicule him for the small, rounded beak that he has, but he took it in
stride and it has stuck. Though he certainly doesn't "like" the name, there
is a certain amount of pride he has about his youthful years on the docks and
so he wears it like a badge of his past affiliation with the gangs of
Seantryn. There are many stories I've heard of his sneaking onto ships for
joy rides as an unnoticed passenger, just to fulfill his love of the sea and
keep him on it. Some people pirate because they need it, after all it's good
pay. Not Tanpolhin. He gets a deep satisfaction from it. The rising thrill
of the battles, the calm after the storm, the barbarity of the pillaging, the
share of the loot, and the brotherhood of the crew all arouse in him a sense
of belonging, a certain feeling of unequaled joy, in some sinister way. I
found this extremely weathered, but still attached to a beam on the Seantryn
Docks:

Captain Suling, Captain of the Red Barnacle
Added Fri Jul 10 20:05:12 2009 at level 31:
During my weeks of discussions with Suloche, I was told many stories of
Tineperem, Tanpolhin's father. She seemed to be very in the dark as to a lot
of this man's activities. I've heard numerous reports from my dealings with
the neighboring villages that he was not only a womanizer, but he was also a
terror on the high seas. I've heard him described as both a drunk and a
smooth manipulator, but in either case, there was nothing but distain for him
as a person. Fear, yes, respect, no. Suloche sees him in a very different
light. I guess you could say she is blinded by love. Her tales of him are
of a sweet, caring man, traveling far and wide not out of a desire to satisfy
some selfish need, but rather to provide for his family. Either way, it
matters very little now as he is dead. It seems he was out at sea working on
the Red Barnacle, the famed red sailed pirate and exploring ship, under the
ruthless command of Captain Suling. Attached is the letter Suloche received
from Captain Suling explaining the events surrounding her husband's death:

To: Suloche
From: Captain Suling of the Red Barnacle
Suloche,
I ain't bein' too good with a pen, but I gotta be givin' you the news meself.
you been knowin', yer husband's, Tineperem, been part of my crew many a
year now. Proud I is of callin' em me mate. Him's a helluva deckhand.
Hell, yer knowin' of his love of the sea, love of the storms. I'ma just get
t' the story o' what's happenin'.
Damned if we ain't been out there on t' seas doin' the things wer doin'.
Fargin' bloody bilge if we ain't too been givin' em hell and beatin' em back,
em filthy duergar o' the Horrid Mermaid o' the East. Er ship's bein' close
t' bein' takin' o'er by us when a storm was comin' up outta the depths, a
gold storm, nothin' like I's ever seein'. Bein' the salty dog e'is,
Tineperem was runnin' up t' the fore top t' be bein' m' eyes through the
storm. Alls I's seein' is a flash o' lightenin' and hearin' a loud crash.
It were hittin' the fore mast and topplin' Tineperem. Now him's a strong
swimmer, ain't pay no mind t' them wings and feathers, sure, but e's damned
wings broke and thrown in the crashin' surge as em were, em's ain't bein'
able t' swim and the crew ain't bein' able t' get to em in time. E's
swimmin' in the locker o' the seas and it ain't often I's sorry t' be sayin'
dat.
I's sendin' dis missive wit a fair share o' gold fer ya. Wishin' I could be
doin' more fer a pretty lass like ya, 'specially wit dat youngin' yous got.
Bein' said before, but I's sorry to be givin' ya dis bad news.

Coastal Plains

After a grueling investigation which included a run in with blood-sucking
leeches, fending off an attack by a pack of angry wolves, and vomiting from
the stench of some nearby bogs, I've finally tracked down Tanpolhin's
birthplace, the small village he was born in. I actually found his mother,
Suloche, and she was not only alive, but very helpful to me in my studies.
She told me that she has not seen him for some time and begged and pleaded
with me to put her back in contact with her son. I told her he is well and
she told me of his tumultuous young life. His father being a sailor and
living on the shores of the ocean installed in him a deep love and bond with
the sea. While most of his race have an inherent fear of the waters, it
seems that something in his lineage has shed that outward fear. It intrigues
me.
I've attached a note that his mother has given me. She says that she found
it tightly folded and stuffed at the bottom of a chest in his room along with
some other belongings he left behind. Here is the note:
_____________________________________________________________
Tanpolhin,
YAAARR!Pack yourself a small bag, kid, we're going on an adventure and
you're going to have the time of your life! I'm taking you on the high seas,
see? Get this, though, you have to tell your mom we're "going fishing." She
ain't my biggest fan, so just let her know I'm taking you out like I used to
do with your dad. Oh, by the way, bring a knife along with you. It's best
to be prepared, you never know what trouble we'll get into! It's gunna be
fun!
*signed with a squiggly line that looks nothing like the name Kaullad*
_____________________________________________________________
Suloche told me of Tanpolhin's uncle. The above referred to Kaullad, was a
pirate and this note was given to Tanpolhin at the young age of only 10 years
old. This note marked the first time Tanpolhin went out to sea and where he
fell in love with it. He had always been drawn to life on the oceans, but
these "fishing trips" installed the zeal, the fascination, the passion in
him. It was discovered that these were actually pirating trips that his
uncle was taking him out on. They would prey on other villages of the
Coastal Plains and small fishing vessels on the fringes of the Aryth Ocean.
It should also be stated that this Suloche is actually the older brother of
Tanpolhin's father and is not related to Suloche. This is where his thievery
and brutality begun, these pirate, fishing trips. He loved them and learned
from the bad habits of his uncle.

As I plodded through the lovely streets of Hamsah Mu'tazz peddling my skills
with the pen I, Elduray Tas'rili, was commissioned by a young thief to
compile some information of his past. Why he has not kept a more meticulous
recorded history of his family and adventures is not only absurd to me, but
it's downright shameful. I digress. I am not sure if it was because his
pockets seemed to be never ending or if because he sees the task as below him
or even if because perhaps he can't write, but he seemed dead set on not
writing his tale himself. Given the enormity of this task, I first
interviewed him in hopes of learning more myself before I set to the true
detective work required to get a true perspective. Following are some notes
I took during our discussions (some for my own sake and some directly about
Tanpolhin):
- scour the various villages of the Coastal Plains north of Seantryn Modan.
he says he was born there in a small village, but did not provide it's name
- find Captain Suling, Captain of the Red Barnacle
- investigate the ruthless, youth gangs of the Seantryn Docks
- seeks to expand Imperial influence to the seas. wants to captain the first
Imperial vessel, be Admiral of the Imperial Fleet
- he is very suave and while he certainly is able of using force to get what
he wants, it isn't often needed
- nicknamed "Duckbill" as a youth to make fun of his beak. doesn't like it
at all, but puts up with it
