Description

Your gaze comes to fall upon a dirty nomad of a man. Slouching slightly, he gazes around his surroundings ever so cautiously with each twitch of his eyes. Dark and leathery tanned skin is contrasted slightly by tattered locks of greasy black hair to his shoulders. Around his neck is a necklace of animal teeth with thirteen various shaped and sized teeth on it. Grey eyes seem to shimmer with what could only be called passion. He is about average size for a man in height and size, fairly muscular and healthy looking. He is clad in leathers and ivory under his various armors, mostly consisted of bone, dragon scales and various other items petrified by the power of nature. On his right forearm, there is a long burn scar running from one side of his wrist to the other. These burn scars continue all the way up his forearm and bicep to his shoulder. Counting them, there are thirteen burns on his arm.

Role

Thirteen windows

Added Thu Oct 20 02:39:50 2011 at level 1:
The howl of the wild winds on this stormy night could be heard from even
the most secure residence. Rain battered on the street, drowning out
Galadon with the pitter patter of millions of rain drops landing in
random patterns. The streets were all but empty, with the rare light
being visible through the occasional shop window. Thirteen windows lit in
the entire city. A lone figure slowly walked up and down the shops,
looking in and out the windows. She was dressed in heavy armor, the
chainmail bearing the symbol of the city of Galadon, she turned her head
tediously, as she patrolled the dark streets. There was no rest for the
Enforcer, she knew not the meaning of the word. The smell of blood was in
the air, and the hunt was on. She knew her nemesis was out there
somewhere, looking to cause havoc on her watch. She turned the corner in
the market and marched out onto the main trading road of the city.
Something caught the corner of here eye just for a moment, and then it
was gone. Intent on keeping the watch, she moved towards the weaponsmith
to investigate. Finding nobody in the shop, she was about to leave when
she noticed wet boot-prints leading directly to, and up, the stairs. A
robbery in progress? She would make sure to deal with them accordingly.

Making her way up into the attic, she looked around the rather spacious
yet cluttered room. Nothing that she could discern from the naked eye,
perhaps in the other corner. As she turned she was met with a thundering
shout, "Enforcer! Now you perish!" The words cut through the silence like
a knife through butter as the Slayer lunged out at her from the shadows.
Striking out in defense, the two broke out into a massive brawl, both
fighting tooth and nail but neither gaining or losing much ground. This
was a fight that had happened many times, thirteen times this week to be
exact, and they knew each others strengths well. Violently they tumbled
and fought, wrestling and struggling. As they continued to battle, the
fighting slowed, the distance between them slowly decreasing as they both
became more and more lethargic in their movements......In an
instantaneous flash, the fighting ceased and was replaced by a fiery
embrace and passionate kissing. Overcome with passion and emotion, the
two collapsed to the floor, making love violently in ways that cannot be
spoken in most languages in public. As quickly as it all began it was
over, the Slayer grinned a sly smile and retreated into the shadows. He
had always wondered how she would be off of her back. As the sound of his
laughter in the night faded, the Enforcer was left still laying down on
the cold floor of the weaponsmiths attic. As she slowly came to her
senses and realized what had happened, she rubbed a hand gently over her
stomach, tears rolling down her face as she whispered to herself, "What
have I done?" The thirteen lit windows in the city all went out.

A hard decision

Added Thu Oct 20 02:42:13 2011 at level 1:
The night was cold as she walked north along the lonely merchant path of
Balator. Looking down at the baby boy in the basket she carried, she
stopped a moment and made sure he was tucked snug and warm in his bundle.
The walk had been long, each step feeling like she was carrying a bull on
her back weighing her down. It broke her heart to do this, but she knew
that it was necessary. She had a duty to the city of Galadon she could
not turn her back on, and it was the only way the she would be able to
protect him from his father, and from the truth. She had not told a soul
about that night, taking a leave from duty and not saying why. She went
to the far north with the elves in Darsylon for the pregnancy and birth.
He was born on the thirteenth day of the thirteenth month, the month of
Dark Shades. She spent thirteen months with them, including the time
recovering spent there after birth. They took good care of her and kept
her secrets, knowing the risk the child would be in if his father was
able to manipulate and distort his vulnerable young mind. She knew what
his name would be the moment he was born, almost as if angels sang it in
her mind...Thalion. She loved him very much, but it was important that
Thalion was never found by his father. She feared the Slayer's influence
would corrupt Thalion's soul, shattering his innocence. The orphanage was
the best place to hide him, knowing that she had an old friend there. She
rounded the corner to the orphanage and knocked on the door a few times,
and waited. The door opened and standing there was a charismatic looking
man in golden plate armor. "It is good to see you again Jaragh," the
woman spoke. "Thank you so much for taking on this burden." The man
smiled and nodded to her and said softly "We have been friends for many
years, you are like my sister. I will treat him as my own, and he will
have a good home here. He can learn in the temple as he grows, it will be
safe. When he is old enough I will make sure has everything he needs to
start a life for himself." She handed the basket to him, wiping tears
from her face after she released it. Within moments she had her composure
again, and leaning in, kissed Thalion on the forehead before turning and
walking away, never looking back.

A scale weighing 13 black stones and 13 white stones

Added Thu Oct 20 02:47:31 2011 at level 1:
Thalion's life in Balator at the orphanage was a simple one, but very
quickly Jaragh could tell that Thalion was not like the other orphans.
Thalion was gifted with a wisdom well beyond his years from early
childhood. When the other orphans were out playing and being children,
Thalion spent his time reading. Everything he could get his hands on,
though the orphanage was not known for its library. Rather then take to
the knightly teachings and morals that Jaragh passed down from his days,
Thalion found himself more drawn to the ways of reason, and knowledge.
Jaragh could see that while Thalion was capable of great deeds in his
life, he also could see that Thalion's fathers poisonous blood also
flowed in his veins. If he lost himself, Thalion could be capable of
terrible darkness as well. The rare mix of his parents blood created a
unique child, indifferent and resistant to the struggles of good and
evil. He felt compassion inside of him, but he also felt a streak of
cruelty and anger. His life was a delicate balance. Thalion was the
finest student in the temple in the village, and he was well aware of it
from the praise he would receive. Daily he would practice his talents in
the temple, aiding the clerics with their daily rounds. He knew of his
potential, that he was capable of greatness. Jaragh continued to notice
the battle going on within Thalion as he watched him grow over the years.
Holding a balance with the blood that runs in his veins has never failed
to be a struggle every day of his young life. But Jaragh also noticed
something else. Something rare, that he had heard of but never witnessed.
Thalion seemed to have the sickness. The number sickness. Though subtle
and small for now, it was small things that tipped Jaragh off. After a
couple years there was no doubt the number thirteen seemed to be on
Thalions mind, weather comforting or vexing him. Thalion just seemed to
see it, and it seemed to see him. He did not understand the number, or
its meaning, but it seemed to be everywhere.

The druidic path

Added Thu Oct 20 02:56:23 2011 at level 1:
As he grew to a teen, Thalion could not help but feel as if there was not
enough for him in Balator. He was given great talents, great gifts. He
felt a responsible duty to make a difference in the world around him,
because those with the power would truly be the only ones responsible for
tending and shaping Thera. There were also answers out there in the
world, answers he would never find in balator. The number haunted him in
the back of his mind, revealing itself to him in random places and times.
Thalion decided it was time for him to leave Balator and find the answers
he seeked, and open his heart to the wisdom he found. He had never left
the safety of Balator, and he did not know where he would go. He readied
what he would need and went to see Jaragh before making off. Jaragh knew
he could not reveal the secret of Thalion's origins to him, but knew in
his heart Thalion was too wise to not eventually uncover the truth. It
would be wise to send him on the druidic path before exposing him to his
own secrets. He knew little of the number sickness, but he did know that
those that meditated deep in the wilds and made their divine ties there
tended to be more centered. Jaragh suggested to Thalion that if he truly
wished to make a difference, to go deep into the wilds and seek the
answers in the calm of nature. To meditate, and open himself up to the
druidic voices of the wilds. Drawn to the idea, the deepest wilds would
be his dwelling while he sought answers in some of the most ancient and
untouched parts of the sanctuary of Theras wilds. He would adapt or he
would die.

A letter arrives

Added Thu Oct 20 04:17:54 2011 at level 10:
The Enforcer paced back in forth in the Mayor's office in obvious
irritation. "Those damn outlanders, that is three fires this week!" She
grumbled as she moved to the desk to have a seat, a well deserved break
was due. The office door squeaked open a crack, the mousy head of a
gnomish courier looking in. "Letter for you! From Balator!" The Enforcer
smiled at the gnome, bowing at him and taking the letter from his hand.
The courier gnome quickly closed the door, the quick rattle of gnomish
footsteps fading away with each one. The Enforcer had a seat at the desk
and relaxed, opening the letter.

********************

My dear friend,

Thalion has grown into a fine young man. I write this letter to tell you
he is in good health, and strong in spirit. I kept him here as long as I
could, but he was too curious about the number and his origins to live a
quiet life here. I sent him to find answers in the deep wilds of Thera,
to live his years and gain his knowledge in the druidic ways. He should
be out of the way, and find his center that will allow him to become a
man of very strong character. I am concerned though. Villagers have
claimed to have encountered a dark man at night near the orphanage asking
about the children. For thirteen nights he roamed Balator in the
darkness, barely seen darting in and out of shadows and whispering in
dark corners. He has not returned since. He seemed quite interested in
the boys Thalion's age, and I dread our worst fears have been realized
and that "He" may suspect the truth. It may be years yet before his
travels bring him to Galadon, but when they do, it is imperative you
reach him before his father does. You will know his face, he has your
eyes. Also, you probably should know that he grew to have the sickness.
The number, it troubles him as it did your father. He is a very wise
young man, and resourceful in his travels. I have no doubt he will find
the answers he seeks, but I worry about the sickness getting worse, and
the consequences that may have for him. I am sure Thalion will make it to
Galadon one day. When he does, be sure to reach him...before "He" does.

Walk in the light my friend
Jaragh

Down the hole...

Added Thu Oct 20 20:30:44 2011 at level 13:
It had been three years and ten months since Thalion had seen
civilization. He was not sure he would ever get used to the idea of it
again completely. He had done what Jaragh had asked, taken the time to
meditate in the wilds. At first, he was unsure he chose the right path.
But as time went on in the wilds, he began to open up to them. In a way.
Thalion did not choose the druidic path, the druidic path and forces of
nature chose and accepted him. It was hard at first, learning to survive.
Over time he developed a system to coexisting with the wilds that he
found tranquility and comfort in. He had found his true balance and
center. He had even taken training from several nomadic druids he had met
in his time in the wilds, and learned to better attune himself with his
powers. The number sickness still hung in the back of his mind, always
showing itself at opportune moments. Though he does not understand what
he see, or how others could not seem to see it, Thalion has accepted the
number engulfing his life in the oddest ways. It no longer causes panic,
rather, he tries to find understanding and meaning of its placement in
his life. Still confused by the significance of the number, coming out of
the wilds for brief periods of time to seek the answers he could not find
in his new home seemed the only wise choice.

It was in these travels one day, after he had achieved his thirteenth
session of lesson with a desert druid he had met that his luck seemed to
pay out for him. He was traveling the svirfneblin city admiring the
wonders of the undergnomes and he tripped and fell down a crack in the
walkway. The fall down the hole was not long, but the landing knocked the
wind out of him. As he came to and looked around, he was not sure if he
was dead or alive, dreaming, or really witnessing what was before his
eyes. He had fallen into some sort of temple, or had he gone mad?
Detailed statues, lavish rugs, hand carved benches, intricate carvings.
It was a place of wonder and gold. Numerous jewels and treasures were on
display, all in groups of thirteen. Thirteen jewels, rugs, benches,
statues. Thalion almost felt high as he looked around in disbelief at
what he was seeing. How had luck brought him, of all people, to this
place, of all places? Thalion felt an unbelievable sense of comfort while
in the temple, seemingly almost connected to the gravity of the place. He
spent some time in meditation, and found it incredibly easy to balance
himself there, almost as if he were deep in the wilds where he learned to
meditate. He did not know what he had found, but he knew it was
significant to him in some way. Every thirteen days he made it a habit to
return to the temple, to take in its wonders and meditate on the answers
he sought to his maddening questions.

The Discovery

Added Mon Oct 24 14:05:54 2011 at level 26:
The poor and scraggly looking man kept pace as he hobbled quickly along
the eastern road. He could nearly see the gates of Galadon now. Nervous
beads of sweat trickled down his forehead as he made his way into the
city. He was dealing with a dangerous man. He had little choice in the
matter, the consequences of not doing what he said would be far worse
than if he submitted and did the task he was given. It was two hours past
midnight, and he was well past the time of their midnight meeting. He had
no idea what was waiting for him in the back of that alley. He made his
way to the alley, working his way to the far back corner where he found a
large man waiting in the darkness for him. The Slayers words cut through
the night like a hot knife through flesh. "You are late. I do not like to
be kept waiting whelp. You had better have the information I asked for."
The scraggly man seemed to shrink where he stood. The slayer could crush
him with a foul glance if he wanted to, and he knew it. "My lord, my
lord. Apologies for my timing, but I wanted to make sure before I brought
this before you. It seems your suspicions were right. She was with child,
that is why she took that absence. The child was born my lord. She kept
it secret. It seems you have a son somewhere." The Slayer cocked his head
to the side and narrowed his eyes at the scraggly man. He knew that bitch
was hiding something, and now her secret was out. "Tell me where I can
find this boy whelp." The scraggly man wiped the sweat from his forehead
and looked to the floor. He would not be happy. "Nobody knows my lord. He
was long gone from the orphanage, and rumor has it he makes his home deep
in the woods somewhere. I was able to get only his name. Thalion. Thalion
Wildheart." The Slayer grinned an evil grin, moving towards the man.
"That will be all whelp." The screams of the scraggly man echoed
throughout Galadon for several minutes before the city was silent again.

Balancing the foothold of Galadon

Added Tue Nov 15 16:18:48 2011 at level 38:
Thirteen months. It had been thirteen months since he had fallen down the
hole last. Thalion could sense he was due for ale and stories in the
lucky cave again. His last ventures out into the wilds had proved
enlightening and fulfilling to him. The druidic arts were a part of him
now, he could feel it. His talents had proved a useful tool to helping
maintain the balance in Thera. The islanders were great to him. A family
even. The sense of companionship had suited him well, and he had enjoyed
sharing his views with others that agreed with him. His home would always
be the wilds, but lately he had become much more comfortable around
others or in the cities. He had traveled all across Thera, far and wide,
speaking with scholars and philosophers as he traveled. He had learned a
great deal about the core of the number vex, and was learning to use his
gifts rather than fear them. The number often showed up as a sign, or
warning, among many other things. Learning to read such omens had brought
Thalion a sense of comfort. Knowledge was a powerful tool. But learning
was often scarce in Dairein, and few traveled there for learning. Perhaps
a move was in order. An easy choice, Galadon was close and the center of
the world for commerce and travel. If ever he was going to enforce
balance, the biggest shifts would likely center near there. Packing what
little he needed, Thalion headed to Galadon to register with the city and
meet the guildmaster nearby. Galadon would be a battleground soon, he
knew. The village had grown strong, and the island had been buckling
lately. Thalion knows the time to get a foothold and gain ground is now,
and is well prepared for the bloody days ahead.
