Description

You find yourself looking upon a storm giant. His height is roughly average for his kind, and his physical frame well muscled. His skin is light blue shade like the color of rain. His hair is a vivid green, akin to the trees of the Emerald Forest, and is long yet tied back. Dark blue eyes stare out from beneth a set of bushy eyebrows, while his nose is small and sharp. A short, trimmed green beard covers his face and decorates his rugged jaw line. He is considered average looking for a storm giant. Hanging about his neck is a horsehead knight piece.

Role

Chapter 1 - A Young Soldier

Added Wed Feb 8 13:55:17 2023 at level 21:
A strong wind whips across the stone battlements, banners waving
fiercly. A tall storm giant looks out across the lake, the massive axe
known as Shockwave resting on his back.

"One day, it may be you that stands upon the battlements, soldiers
and guards at your command, your duty becoming more than that of
just defending our home, but leading." Rusal spoke sternly.

He turned, his gaze falling upon the small gathering of young storm
giants, eager to be soldiers and guards like many of their kin. Rusal,
smiled, happy to see a good group of canditates this year.

"Alright you lot, dismissed. You've got a lot of training still." Rusal
commanded. As the group dispersed, the giant called out to one of
the young cadets, "Tharlingon, stay here a moment. I've got more to
speak to you about."

A young giant stopped as he was ordered and as the last of the group
were gone, he responded, "Yes, Commander?"

Rusal looked over the lad, studying him a moment, "There is
something more to you. I can see it. You are meant for more then
being a simple soldier or guard. There is nothing wrong with being
one, but a unit needs a leader. I think you have a quality that could
lend itself to it."

Tharlingon pointed to himself, "Me? I don't know the first thing about
leading, Sir. It would be a disaster."

Rusal laughed, "Right now yes! That is why I want you to begin
studying with Agalothin and become more then a soldier."

"Agalothin sir? Isn't he some old hermit?"

"Indeed he is! But at one time he wasn't old, and he led several
occursions upon Kiadana. You'll report to him in the morning. He'll be
waiting for you. Now, dismissed."

Chapter 2 - Knight to E4

Added Wed Feb 8 14:00:52 2023 at level 21:
The waters of the lake lapped hungrily on the sandy beach shore. The
morning dawn bathed the area in its warm rays, causing the waters to
shimmer. Tharlingon found himself far up the shore of the lake and
standing before a small wooden structure. The home of Agalothin.

As the young Tharlingon reared his fist to knock, a wizened voice
ordered, "Enter, and be quick about it! I ain't getting any younger."

Tharlingon pushed the door open, shadows and sunlight mixing,
making it difficult to see until his eyes adjusted to the dimmer
lighting of the inside. In the center of the room sat an old, bearded
storm giant upon a thicket chair. Before him was a table, and on that
table a chess board.

He didn't bother looking up to the young giant but reached out an old
wrinkled hand and moved a horse headed shape piece, "Knight to E4"
he remarked. "Your move."

And so the day and the following days went. Tharlingon would try to
raise questions, but the only response would ever be "Your move."
Time after time, Tharlingon lost and no matter how many times he
adjusted to a new strategy, the old man had a counter.

One day became different. Tharlingon again was losing at the game of
chess and his frustration was building. He had come to learn about
war, not play a game. His breaking point came and Tharlingon knocked
the pieces from the board, roaring with anger, "I came to learn from
you, but all we do is play this game, old man! I'm sick of it!"

As the young giant began to grab his things to leave, he heard the old
man chortle. "Ah, so at last your first lesson has been taught."

Tharlingon looked back, puzzled, "What do you mean first lesson? You
haven't taught me anything!"

Agalothin just laughed more, his old wheezing laughter filling the
young Tharlingon's ears with taunts. "Don't you see, my student. Your
first lesson is about creating anger and rage in your enemy. An enemy
blinded by rage cannot focus and will not see the ploy being laid out.
They willl be caught and defeated, as you have today."

Tharlingon's eyes widen as he realized this whole time it was a ruse to
push him, to push him to a point where he would act out. The old man
laughed again and responded, "Now for your second lesson. How to
stay calm..."

Chapter 3 - Lessons Left Untaught

Added Wed Feb 8 14:06:19 2023 at level 21:
Years went by and Tharlingon grew. No longer just a naive, young
cadet hoping to become a soldier, but now a young man, learned in
the basics of combat and warfare. Weapons felt comfortable in his
hands, armor moved as though it were part of him, and his focus
became more clear.

His studies taught him much about war, from battles to skrimishes,
from fights with swords to joust with words and cunning. War was
more then soldiers, more then men and horses. And each day he
looked forward to learning more.

Night had already fallen when he was making his way back to his
Master's home. A long days of combat training left him sore, but
happy. His fellow cadets had come a long way to in their training.
Tharginlon smiled, taking in a breath of the crisp fall air. The stars this
evening dotted the sky, a testament of their eternal eyes upon mortal men.

Tharlingon noticed one star burning brighter then others and as he
studied it, the star flickered and shot across the sky, falling from view
and disappearing. Thinking nothing of it, he entered the home. "I'm
home Master. You won't believe what I just saw."

No response. Tharlingon found this unusual and after a quick search
he found Agalothin on his bed. The old man slowly opened his eyes,
his breathing was short and raspy. "My student, I am afraid it is my
time. There were so many lessons still to t...teach you."

"No Master, save your strength! You've still got time."

Agalothin coughed, wheezing as he formed a smile, "You've become a
fine man. See out the Commander's Crest. Perhaps your lessons will
be finished then. Goodbye Tharlingon. Serve the light well." He
closed his eyes one last time.
