Description

Standing before you is a figure which stands just over six feet tall, yet his body is lean and muscular lacking any bulk. Shocking silver white hair has been cut very close on the side, yet it is a little bit longer on the top and is a shaggy mess. With the sides closely cropped, one can see that long elven ears stick out and appear to have a single silver stud in each lobe. His angular face appears to be cold and stern, lacking any sort of emotion at first glance, as a pair of circular rimmed glasses are perched upon his nose. His almond shape eyes are even more pronounced with the glasses, and one can see that his eyes are steel grey in color and seem to burn with a passion within despite his calm demeanor. His slightly tan skin is clean shaven of any facial hair like many of his kin, though it appears to be weathered as if he has been within the elements for a good deal of time. His garments appear to fit him well as they conceal most of his body, though one can see that there is a leather band around his leg which seems to conceal an assortment of sharp blades and tools. As well, there are several pouches upon his belt that give off an earthly herbal. The edges of his garments appear to be well worn and mended several times, as one can also see old stains which are consistent with wear and tear within the wild. Looking at his arms and hands, it appears that his garments have been rolled up to his elbows allowing his hands fast and easy movement.

Role

Tharliss Willowdust, a brief outline

Added Wed Jul 19 14:36:30 2023 at level 1:
Born to a doctor of natural medicine of Evermoon Hollow, followed in his
teachings from a young age.

Cold and logical, however he gets excited when it comes to his research. He
is a bit ignorant to society cues, and he attempts to see the world in terms
of science and knowledge. He is very slow when it comes to jokes and humor.

Believes in the Nature vs magic view of thinking. His view is that when magic
is forced upon beings which were not naturally imbued with such, that it
corrupts the body and becomes a cancer which rots at the body. As such he
does not HATE magic, but see's it as a source of poison.

Even among those of Evermoon Hollow, he spent a lot of time in the forest and
plains exploring in attempts to discover new herbs and roots for medicine.

He hunts and kills in the name of science and does not seek to make it
personal. He believes that the death of the mages is a necessary step for the
'greater good'. He thinks it is a great honor for the subjects of his
research, for their sacrifice shall live on in his work.

Tharliss seeks to collect samples from all the mages that he kills, mainly
with that of steaks from their corpse. His ultimate goal is to achieve a
sample of every type of mage and the different races across Thera to have a
true sampling. With this research and data he hopes to write a medical
research paper which can perhaps aid with the treatment of many within Thera.

Among the many citizens of Thera, he has come across those of the Village of
Battleragers. They intrigue him as they appear to be immune to a limited
extent to the ways of magic. They deserve study just as much, for they may be
the key to solving the issue of the magic plague. Will seek to become a medic
within such a village.

To pass down a legacy

Added Wed Jul 19 14:38:33 2023 at level 1:
As he stood there grinding away at the mortar and pestle grinding the herbs,
Thaliyaus could feel a presence watching him from the window. A slow smile
spread across his face as he could see a reflection in the many glass bottles
before him of a shaggy headed little boy with wide eyes peering into the open
window. He had always hoped his son would take an interest in the ways of the
healing arts, but it was not something he was ever going to push upon him.

Without ever taking his eyes off his work, Thaliyaus gave a simple wave with
one hand to beckon the little boy into the room. A small giggle escaped from
the little boy at being discovered yet he disappeared from view briefly and
then remerged through the front door. An eager smile upon his face as he
stood there watching his father, trying to peer up over the counter to see
what he was making.

Pausing briefly, Thaliyaus reached down under the table and pulled out a
small step stool and placed it next to himself. Returning to the counter top,
he then placed a second mortar and pestle to his right along with a freshly
picked pile of herbs. Watching out of the side of his eye, Thaliyaus began to
explain what it was he was doing and as to why. How he was preparing
medicinal herbs as he does every morning for the day to come. With a cautious
and simple nod, the little boy watched his father in awe and took in all he
could and mimicked the motions. Though his face did not show it, Thaliyaus
could not but help feel pride in this moment in his son and a new generation
would begin their journey into the path of medicine.

The nature of life and death

Added Wed Jul 19 14:40:37 2023 at level 1:
Living within Evermoon Hollow there was a strong tie to the cycles of nature,
the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. Thaliyaus knew this
well and had seen death up close many a times in his life with his
profession, yet his son had not. Thaliyaus knew that this would be the first
important lesson he could ever give his son, that no matter what one does and
try they shall never escape that of death. It is the inevitable end of the
cycle of life, one that should be respected and honored, for without it life
has no meaning or purpose.

This was why Thaliyaus allowed his son to be by his side as he cared for the
elderly woman whom he knew would soon pass. His son had to witness death in
person, to acknowledge that it was a conclusion which would be with him for
the rest of his profession. Yet Thaliyaus did not want his son to fear death,
but to see its beauty and that is why he first sough to show him this way.

As little Tharliss watched the elderly woman give her last breath, he watched
as a peaceful look settled upon her face. Looking up to his father, Thaliyaus
gently shrouded the woman and whispered a soft prayer before escorting him
out of the room. Little Tharliss was confused however and asked his father
that if everything ends in death, then why do we seek to heal and prolong
life? A kind smile spread across Thaliyaus face, as he told his son that 'we
do what we can to preserve nature but we must know our limits. There are many
things which go against nature and seek to infect the body and that is what
we seek to fight and cure'. These words and event would forever live with
Tharliss would shape the future of what was to come.

Dedicated to Natural Science

Added Wed Jul 19 14:42:32 2023 at level 1:
As the years passed for young little Tharliss, his dedication to the
teachings of his father grew and blossomed into an obsession. For when he was
not with his father, he could be found roaming the plains and forest studying
the flora and fauna within it. Always driven to find new herbs and plants
that could be used in medicinal ways, there was nothing he was not willing to
try. Any time a rumor of a new illness, disease or plague would sprout up,
Tharliss would always beg his father for them to go so that they could study
it. Amused by such, he father would often relent and they would travel to
other villages and cities in which Tharliss would be in awe.

To see these places and know there were so much untapped knowledge buried
within books that he had never seen. Though as he would find time to read
them, he would often be disappointed in what they contained as they were
basic and rudimentary in nature. They often lacked true insight and would
give little on practical uses of herbs and natural medicine. Instead often
recommending the use of clerics to solve the issues which may affect someone.
Or in worse cases they would suggest magical elixirs and tonics to pollute
the body in an attempt to rid it of some common ailment which was natural.

In his younger years Tharliss would not give much thought to this, but as he
grew his eyes would be opened to a possible cause for many of these
infections and mutations found within the body. Magic.

Diagnoses of magic:

Added Wed Jul 19 14:44:31 2023 at level 1:
Within that of Evermoon, Tharliss noticed that they had far fewer plagues and
strange occurrences of outbreaks. There were no wild infections beyond the
common cold or illnesses which could be found within the forest. Yet the
outside world was a different place in which plagues and such ran unchecked.
What was it that made Evermoon and those of his kin resistant to such
outbreaks? Ever driven to his studies he could not help but come to a
hypothesis that it was their rejection of the use of outside magic.

Nature was so ingrained within Evermoon and his kin, that it did not have a
need to augment their lives with enhancements. That they accepted what they
were born with and did not seek to change their bodies in such ways to tap
into something that was greater then they could control. There was a balance
to which magic could be found in some creatures within nature, but they were
born to it. They did not seek to change later in their lives to harness such
powers. It was only those beings which had contact with magic at a later
point that they found mutations and other illnesses.

But this was only a working theory, and there was a lack of magi within
Evermoon which he could study. More so, how would he go about studying the
changes of the body within the mages who touched this source of infection?
Driven on by such questions, Tharliss mind was racing with possibilities. Yet
he knew staying here in Evermoon would not get him any closer to his studies,
so he gathered what he could to set off upon his own research.

The Journey into Thera

Added Wed Jul 19 14:46:18 2023 at level 1:
Tharliss did not think much of his travels, for he was confident in his
skills of survival. He had lived much of his life within the forest and upon
the plains where he knew he had the skills to find food and shelter. Granted,
he would miss the books which he had left behind as well as his laboratories
but it was a sacrifice in the name of science and medicine that he did such.

More so, Tharliss was unsure if it was truly safe to take up residence in the
larger cities as they could be a source of infection. As he traveled through
towns and cities, he saw how unchecked and widely used magic was and saw this
as a breeding ground for the plague. Tharliss believed it would be better to
reside in the wilderness and observe and quarantine himself from such
sources.

Being out on his own for the first time in his life, Tharliss was a bit nave
in how things worked. It appeared that not everyone was as interested and
passionate in the medical sciences as he was. Granted he appeared to many as
a strange and emotionless wood-elf who would approach them completely garbed
from head to toe to protect himself, but Tharliss did not see this as
strange. If anything he thought it prudent to take precautions when dealing
with this possible infection. However as he failed over and over again in his
attempts to socialize and observe those within large cities, he found he
would have to take a risk and approach it in a new way. Of course, always in
the name of science.

To do what must be done for the greater good

Added Wed Jul 19 14:47:55 2023 at level 1:
With even changing how he approached those of the city, Tharliss could not
find any willing to participate in his studies or experiments. Did they not
understand that this could change how medicine was viewed within Thera? Did
they not understand that in such research that they could help exterminate a
potential plague which was quietly destroying so many?

Well then, if they did not wish to aid in the manner in which he needed then
he would revert to treating them like wild infected beast. And one thing that
he had learned in his youth and time in Evermoon Hollow was how to hunt and
put down infected beast. Yet to do such in the confines of the city, well
that would only cause panic and make it harder on obtaining research. So
Tharliss began to plan, lure and hunt those infected by magic into the
wilderness where he could remove them from the populous. There he could
ethically euthanize them and ease their suffering, for clearly their brain
and body was being rotten away by the effects of magic. And once such was
done, Tharliss could take his time in his autopsy of the subject. Perhaps he
could find what within the body made them drawn to magic and what made them
so vulnerable.

Tharliss believed that there was something within those touched by magic
which made them different from the rest of the populous. Else there would be
a food of magic within society and the weak would have been filtered out
leaving only a hybrid of a magical creature. So since such had not happened,
it was clear that mages were abnormal and aberrations to the populous and it
was Tharliss mission to find out what made them such.

Medical Journal: Conjuration

Added Wed Jul 26 15:14:11 2023 at level 21:
Subject: Samples of Rhontda
Species: Svirfneblin Conjurer
Location: Ysigrath
Date of Entry: 6AM, Day of the Great Gods, Month of Heat year 478

It should be noted that these samples were obtained at an eariler date and
were preserved for later inspection when I had a location sterile of magic.
With such procured I can now move forward with my investigation upon such
samples. These were collected within the swamps of Ysigrath as the subject
Rhontda was found to be traveling with his familiar which was a homonculous.
As a note, the homonculous could not be researched nor a sample obtained as
it was banished upon subject Rhontda being euthanized.

Being as this was my first in the field biopsy, there were mistakes which
were made that shall be corrected in furture collection. As such, only one
steak of subject Rhontda could be obtained along with blood samples and brain
matter. Upon inspection of the blood, it appeared to be of a thicker
consistency then your average human that I have seen. Unlike many of the
myths or horror stories, Svirfneblin do in fact have blood and is not unlike
the rest of us. The brain matter however could not be fully inspected due to
rapid deterriation once removed from the skull.

It should also be noted that post biopsy interview of subject Rhontda
returned aggressive in nature. It remains to be seen if this is a side
effect of his body being purged of magic for the moment, or if it is the
natural nature of Svirfneblin.

Results: Inconclusive at this time, as more data upon that of Conjuration
shall be needed.

Medical Journal: Invocation

Added Wed Jul 26 19:30:26 2023 at level 21:
Subject: Samples of Cheldric
Species: Elven Invoker (Sex unknown)
Location: Azreth Forest
Date of Entry: 3pm, 35th day of the Moon, Month of Heat in year 478

While exploring that of Azreth Forest for any possible new herbs or fungus
which I have yet to experiment with, I observed that of an Elven invoker
named Cheldric. In his company was a Storm giant priest and a Cloud giant
warrior who previously expressed interest in that of the village. (side note:
I can not but help think his brain was somehow infected by the proximity of
the plagued elf. He was informed of such and he seemed receptive to such
advice)

The Elf was euthanized humanly, though he did attempt to fight such while
casting fireballs. Further proof of how those infected with magic seem not to
care about the environment in which they travel or live. For such actions
could have set the forest ablaze. For chain of custody to the authenticity of
the samples, I must note that I had to briefly flee from the subjects corpse
to prevent further blood contamination upon the ground with the others. Able
to return unmolested, I proceeded to conduct my biopsy upon subject Cheldric.

With lessons learned since last harvest, I was able to procure many more
samples. First observation of the corpse of subject Cheldric was their waif
physical appearance. It is unsure if this is due to their close affinity to
magic of related to that of their heritage (Further research will be
conducted upon such). However what was apperant was strange markings upon the
hands of subject Cheldric. While many who work with their hands will have
callouses, these were different entirely. They appeared more akin to that of
burns and frostbite that one would find upon a corpse. The brain sample was
clearly more well defined and a marvelous specimen, however nothing was
evident in its study.

Conclusion: Minor physical alterations to the hands region, though this could
be an anomaly. Evidence of exposure to extreme elements, and larger dilated
pupils of the subject. Unlike previous subject, subject Cheldric was more shy
in post interview and reclusive.

The Eternal Library

Added Fri Jul 28 15:12:12 2023 at level 23:
Ever driven for knowledge and research, Tharliss has always sought out
libraries across Thera. There was one behind the Inn of the Eternal star yet
it seemed to be restricted as one could not come and go. This truly did
frustrate Tharliss as he felt it was gatekeeping possible knowledge away from
him and others. But in his travels, he heard whispers of another library, a
greater library!

As Tharliss found his way to the Eternal Library he was amazed at its grand
stature. Though as he started to poor over the catalogues and indexes of
books, he grew slightly disappointed. For while there was a plethora of raw
knowledge, there was nothing yet on medicine. Nothing upon herbs and roots or
even of anatomy of the races of Thera! Recognizing that this was an
opportunity to further not only his knowledge but to spread the awareness of
the harms of magic, Tharliss sought the guidance of Lady Ishuli.

Intrigued with his research and goals, Lady Ishuli opened up her Library to
Tharliss and simply asked that he continue his research and to propose a
preface to his paper. Thrilled with such, this has set Tharliss into a
whirlwind of possible avenues to which take his research. However the major
problem he knows he has, is to distill it down into a clear and
understandable goal.

Growth within Thera

Added Wed Aug 16 14:40:43 2023 at level 51:
Some time has passed since Tharliss had traveled to the library, yet he has
always been driven by thoughts of it. He spent many a nights squirreled away
compiling his notes for his paper proposal which he submitted to Lady Ishuli.
While it took some effort to distill down what he wished to convey, Tharliss
believes that it is a solid starting piece.

Within that of the Village, Tharliss soon began to establish himself as the
Doctor as he would tend to any and all whom came in contact with the arcane.
Granted, most of the injuries were of physical nature, it always thrilled him
when he was called upon to diagnose something of an arcane infection. More
times then not, it was of no issue for Tharliss had dedicated himself to
becoming a master herbalist. It gave him a smile when those of the village
were amazed at his abilities. Though he knew that this was only one step upon
his journey, for at least the village understood the perils of the arcane.
The world was so large and vast and there were so many clueless souls out
there which have not yet gotten the message. It is to them now that Tharliss
would focus his attention. To promote not only a clean healthy life style,
but to show the village as a premiere location for medical advancement in
pure living.

This was a driving force as to why Tharliss dedicated himself in growing
within the guild, and stepping up for more responsibilities within that of
the Village. He put his name forth to the Commander as one to be considered
for Drillmaster, and was told should the current candidate not succeeded that
he would be next in line. While some may have been disappointed in such news,
Tharliss was happy with such for at least there was a line now established so
that the Village would continue to grow. As well it did not stop Tharliss
from speaking with all new applicants and conducting his only physical upon
them.

Libraries and Laboratories

Added Wed Aug 16 14:42:41 2023 at level 51:
Ever in pursuit of knowledge within Thera, Tharliss heard a rumor of a
laboratory deep within the Underdark. It was first only a whisper, yet he dug
deep within the libraries and soon had a name, K'tengs. As he searched the
underdark he soon found his way to its steps, and there was much sacrifice in
which Tharliss had to endure for the pursuit of knowledge. Bracing himself,
he even traversed a portal knowing full well how the taint of the arcane
would make him sick.

Though his sacrifice was well worth it, for there was a treasure trove of
knowledge within! More so within the labatory were so many specimens which
filled him with wonder. There was even a dissection table, though now dirty
and not sterile.

Clearly this had once been an astounding mind which as well sought knowledge
but fallen to the infection. Looking about one could clearly see madness
setting in to their settings. Tharliss however sought to find whatever
knowledge he could, and soon he had in his possession many notebooks and
scrolls upon subjects like Distillation, Sublimation, Crystallization as a
few examples! Devowering this knowledge, Tharliss once again returned to Lady
Ishuli library for it deserved to find a home there. After sitting and
reading them all in depth within the library (with a fine bottle of wine
which was retrieved as well from there), Tharliss left these notebooks as an
offering to Lady Ishuli.

Reflections of what is a Drillmaster

Added Mon Aug 28 13:55:20 2023 at level 51:
Sitting at a table in Lady Ishuli's great library, Tharliss sat down to
ponder what it truly means to be a Drillmaster of the village. He had seen
the previous one, and they were indeed impressive. Yet they were a bright
burning flame which was gone way to soon.

Tharliss decided that he would not be that type of Drillmaster, as he saw
greater value for the village to have someone who withstood the test of time
and battles. He knew that in order to fight this plague and infection which
was spreading across Thera, you needed a strong village. You needed it full
of souls to be out there on the front lines to be the vanguard against it.
And it was Tharliss mission to keep them healthy and ready for battle. To
keep them geared and prepared. For an army which is sick or wounded shall
never be an army at all. He would be their doctor upon the fields of battle,
risking his life to get to them and heal them.

More so, it was to Tharliss duty to educate them and teach them. To help them
learn from the past and gain knowledge which has always been passed down
through the ages and uphold traditions. Could Tharliss be on the front lines,
frothing at the mouth looking to kill all those whom are infected? Of course
he could, and he does not shy away from this duty when needed. Yet his goal
is to stop the spread of magic across Thera as a whole and not just in one
magi. It is a long battle, and one where knowledge and patients wins in the
end

Medical Journal: Transmutation (Shapshifter)

Added Mon Sep 4 19:53:34 2023 at level 51:
Subject: Samples of Geyo
Species: Elven Shapshifter
Location: Ruins of Maethien
Date of Entry: 10PM, Day of the Moon, Month of the Dragon Year 486

I observed the subject Geyo traveling within the Ruins of Maethien along with
two others (Laeknir and Lyronides) as they sought to progress. This elf
seemed to be on an accelerated path and to such I worry about the effects
already progressed with his infection. While watching him in the wilds, I
observed that he seemed to take shape of a lobster which is strange being so
far inland. Perhaps another side of the deuteriation of his mind.

While Geyo rested with the other two, I figured he had suffered enough
already to this infection and humanely euthanatized him in his sleep. The
subject Geyo hopefully did not feel anything. Upon inspection of the tissue
sample, it was hard to get any accurate data from it as there was
contamination from the surrounding ruins.

Post sample collection I attempted to gather information from subject Geyo.
However they would not respond to any medical survey of their medical
history.

Medical Journal: Second Hand infection

Added Thu Sep 14 13:43:31 2023 at level 51:
Subject: Samples of Jaqusa
Species: Half Elven Assassin
Location: Sterile Grounds of the Village
Date of Entry: 3PM, Day of the Bull, Month of the Spring Year 488
I was in luck as I was presented with a chance to study a subject who has
been closely tied to a pure source of the arcane. More so the subject Jaqusa
reported to the Village which allowed me a closer study of them. It should be
noted that the subject was in a hostile mood, perhaps an onset of a hyper
aggression due to their status within the Maw. While engaging the subject
Jaqusa it became apparent that they suffer from delusions and they do not
view the world around them in the same reality.

This lead to me finally euthanizing the subject so that they would no longer
suffer. However upon retrieving their garments they appeared to continue to
rant upon something which was meaningless. Perhaps the infection is spread
not only by the arcane of magic but of what they wear. It is an interesting
and horrifying thought that mere objects could have such an impact upon the
health and sanity of mortals.

An autopsy within the sterile compound of the Village revealed that their
body was in good physical condition (other then what I had inflicted upon
them) showing no other signs of decay. However it should be noted that I
could not perform an examination upon the brain where I believe the true
issue is for second hand infection.

Further study is needed, but I am making progress.
