Description
The towering centaur before you draws attention from the public for when most
look upon this abomination they unwillingly remember of the shared reality
from things beyond. Inky and leaden skin stretches tightly over an inhuman
bundle of muscle; savage and weathered scars mar and stitch over his exposed
skin, telling a wordless story. A smokey combination of jet black and ashen
hair create a magnificent mane that spills from his helmet and armament,
wavering in the wind like a storm moving in his wake; patches of hair cover
down his body and even obscure his hooves in darkened gray plumes. A distinct
lack of tribal beads and rural trinkets further alienate his visage from the
rare norm of other centaur clans. His equipment is haphazardly collected;
stitched together without fashion or thought as his bulkiness and strange
physique requires creativity. A sharpened weapon hangs from his hands, a
clearly comfortable and daunting partner to someone so trained. One oddity
draws attention - a ragged scrap of crimson cloth, covered in dirt and tied
tightly around his right wrist. A newer scar seems to have formed along his
neck in the form of two shadowed pockmarks from a pair of fangs. Inspecting
further, you spy the following detail...
Role
Nightmare in Elm Wood

"THEOOOoo......reEEENDUS....." The haunting whispers, voidless and taunting,
drifted and echoed through the strange plain where the sun never rose. The
'thing' was hunting him - always since the day he was born. How it knew his
name or why each member of his kind was hunted by one, and only one, unique
for everyone... none ever knew why.
Theorendus huddled within the remains of an ancient ruin, a shell of a small
crumbled tower giving him a moment's rest. Using a makeshift spear made from
the bones of probably an ancestor, he rummaged through a scattered pile of
rusted and mangled contraptions that hid in the shadow of the ruin. Alien and
foreign, none of them ever seemed to do anything or hold an obvious purpose
but they grabbed his attention nonetheless - it was like a giant puzzle he
didn't have the time to figure out and it gnawed at him. Perhaps it was just
the necessary distraction to the insanity of an existence always on the run,
always on both sides of the hunt. He bent down and lifted up a large metallic
sphere, roughly the size of his head, that was broken inward on both sides..
"THHHHEEEEOOOO..." It was closer, above him now. He had spent too long
playing with his toys, he needed to retreat. Without hesitation, he raised
the sphere above him and hurled it with all the strength he had across the
clearing. Before it landed, something had swooped down and latched on,
tearing off shreds of metal as it rolled in the dirt creating a cacophony of
noise. Theorendus bolted the other direction and rushed into the woods
seeking shelter from the 'thing' above... he had learned from his mother
never to stay in the woods long, there were other horrors here that could
kill you.
Sadly, his mother taught him that lesson the hard way.
The Fountain Ring
Added Fri Feb 14 18:09:49 2020 at level 2:
Walking at an incredibly slow pace to try and silently make his way through
the thickened brush, Theorendus controlled his breathing and knew that
patience could be the only thing to save him in this treacherous place.
Stalking through the web of branches, he'll never admit the strange sound
that froze him in fear.
Strange laughter, almost a muffled quiet giggle broke the eerie silence -
slowly turning his head to look behind himself, a small clearing was suddenly
present that wasn't moments ago. Two small beings that rose barely to his
waist stood with their backs to him in the middle and...they walked on two
legs! They each only had two legs! Dark-haired and shrouded in darkness, the
two were conversing in a foreign tongue and nudging each other before an
archaic stone fountain, yet another broken ruin. Terrified of what they could
be, in the woods which had already taken his mother, he stood petrified in
thought before a strange midnight void parted reality before them. As if
tearing the very air, this black swirl unfurled and the two small beings
calmly walked in and faded away.
Not truly understanding what he had seen, Theorendus thought he might be
going mad - something in the air... right? Cautiously after several minutes,
he stepped into the clearing as the swirling mass of blackness was hypnotic
with pulses and ripples to match a heartbeat. This was clearly the first
working thing he had ever seen and that fact along enticed him. It showed
life where everything he knew was lifeless.
Something shifted inside the portal, the motion stirring in reverse - a
direct reaction. As every fiber of his being screamed at him to pull back, to
run and survive, Theorendus didn't. Without a single sound, the void sprang
like a flower trap and encased him. Bright colors and senses assaulted him as
he howled in pain, his head pounding with pain where the only thing he could
hear was all too familiar.
"THEOOOoo......reEEENDUS....."
Getting Out
Added Fri Feb 14 18:13:27 2020 at level 2:
(Skip forward several years)
The sign above the door was faded, worn, and it was his home. The El Azahr
Trading Company had given him hope in what seemed like an eternity past...
when he was just a panicked centaur fighting the guards in the Modan. Lost,
unable to communicate and in dire shock from the sudden flood of color and
sound, it was a visiting old merchant that saw a deal to be made.
In that time he had learned the language, been shown the wonder of cities and
how interconnected these puzzles could be - what he only knew to be dead
ruins, could foster life. It took longer to earn companions he trusted,
others seeking glory to become the next Sultan. He had taken a role as bounty
hunter, utilizing his speed and power to hunt down the wicked... a job he
quickly regretted starting.
Soreina Lidwych, a typical thief bounty was all but simple. It was easy
finding her and bringing her alive was what he wanted had she not resisted.
Thrashing about, when she reached into her red cloak he instinctively struck
her down - regret filled him for killing one of childbearing capacity.
Telling himself that he would be endlessly taunted if he didn't follow their
custom to bring in proof, he reluctantly returned her scalp. After being
paid, he heard the man say "Dumb bitch, thought she could run with my
heirloom ring when she denied ME at the Altar! That wom..." The rest trailed
off as Theorendus almost lost his balance in shock. What had he done...he had
stalked her like the 'things' from his Hell...
After talking the sullen centaur out of ending his own life, the now High
Merchant took pity and said "I've been on the path so long, my wine has become
vinegar - find your own trail now, however strange it may be."
Now standing before the sign, holding what little he took on this next step,
he knew that this time he was going to tracking down himself.
Sour Man, Sour Man, Sour Man

"You murdered my mother!" roared Lorente with a primal scream.
"Your name means a spirit of bad intentions - enjoying causing harm to
others" said Azhult.
"You pompous fool, you hoof-brained mare!" yelled Admund.
"You are key to this, Lost One" whispered Argothus the Seer.
"Nooo!" cried out Soreina Lidwych.
Theorendus tossed and writhed in his sleep, remembering the pain and emotions
from his past. The acts of sorrow grew, he was struggling to let go.. And he
was headed back to where it started.
"THEEOooooo...." growled the darkness in his dream.
Theorendus snapped out of his rest, breathing deeply and taking immediate
stock of his surroundings. Heart racing, a shiver traveling through his back,
he shook out his mane and rose quickly. This was all getting to him too much,
it was taking hold of his calm of mind.
Fleeting images rushed through his thoughts of the past: the Captain's
departure, the suicide of his ancient foe upon the Watcher, the deathly dance
with the vampire and the constant struggle in the War. Shaking his head and
focusing on the cooling waters of the lake shrine, he tried to calibrate
his thoughts - filling himself with positive energy to combat the growing
darkness.
"The world may try and dissolve into Chaos and Darkness, but I must prevail!"
The Shining Heart

A strange silence filled the antechamber. With a small hiss, toxic fumes
rolled around his legs as it continuously poured out around him; the dark
altar dedicated to Yzekon before him littered with these small holes. Resting
along both sides of the altar were two bowls filled with black blood and
their acidic smell made Theorendus' nose twist slightly. Lifting with both
arms, he raised the top panel of the altar and found within something glowing
with a violet array of light...
Laying in a pool of its own blood rested the large heart of a shadow dragon.
Covered in savage cuts and tears, it still continued to pump blood somehow
alive with its twisted source of power.
Raising it before him, his mind immediately raced to his past with these fated
beasts. The Shadow Plane and its host of fiends had haunted him since
childhood and now, he had grown strong enough to hold them back. His fear had
been replaced with resolve, his intent to cower now curtailed by a drive to
move forward. He could still remember that distinct grape-like taste when a
felled elder shadow dragon had landed roughly after battle, and yet had one
of its strange ghostly eyeballs survive the impact - and he had eaten it to
be granted its strange vision in the monochromatic hellscape.
What pulsed in his hands was another clue, another step forward. Something he
had started ages past and yet now knew he was on the right path to finding
his family... he knew they were alive, somehow he knew.
After an internal debate and moment of reflection with others, he knew with
everything in this war there would be risk. That on his trail lie shadows
that would mean to trip him and cause him to stumble. With a sigh of resolve,
he knew there was only one choice forward.
After a brief prayer to Einoh for strength, he closed his eyes and ingested
the heart. As the strange power fought against his own internal strength he
knew.... More.

"I will burden you no longer."
The words echoed over and over in his mind, the thought becoming a cacophony
of discord that swirled and spiraled through his growing anger. A fiery
response had died long ago, the embers foster a chilling cold spike that
nestled deeper.
Theorendus was sitting calmly within the hellscape that had evaded him for
too long. The only noise that could be heard was his own heart and breath -
the shadows had given him a moment, likely their empathetic gift responding.
"Wasn't it you, Einoh, who spoke of the burdens we must bear to do what is
right. And yet, when the choice came you abandoned and betrayed me just like
the rest." Lifting his hand to mockingly call upon that which would never
come, the lack of response brought a small strange smile to his face. And
then suddenly, he blinked in a moment of understanding.
All had betrayed him and abandoned him... and yet that was eliciting a
trained response. If all had done what they desired and turned against him,
then perhaps what they did was right. Not the act of his work within the
Plane but following what they desired. Closing his eyes and pausing over
this, a strange rush of enervating darkness fluttered around him as some
fiend of the night flew by the open tower. Something within him pulsed... and
fed.
"I will no longer hesitate. The Father knows what I desire... and I will now
ask what was forbidden."
Rising up and staring into the darkness of the swirling exit before him, he
grinned. It felt good to be unchained, it felt.... pure.
As he walked back into the portal as he had countless times before, something
followed him this time. It was the Day of Freedom, in the Month of Dark Shades.
The Seer would enjoy such irony.
