Role
Tombury Blackblood
Added Wed Jan 8 13:50:15 2014 at level 6:
Tombury Blackblood's mama lost her ass,
got knocked up by some dark-elf bloke
Tombury Blackblood was top o' his class,
cut people open and fixed what was broke
Tombury Blackblood went to the battlefield,
swooned like a lass and was piled with the dead
Tombury Blackblood woke up sick'n squealed,
somethin' snapped deep inside o' his head
Tombury Blackblood's crazy as a loon,
pray he ain't comin' to fix you soon
- Child's rhyme in the townships of Seven Pines and Easthaven, northeast of
Voralian City
It doesn't take long for dead bodies to stiffen - just a few hours. Most
people know that. After a few days, though, they soften up and bloat with gas
as they rot. Most people don't know that. And almost nobody knows that like
Tombury Cooper.
There he was, tossed into a pile of dead dark-elven bodies, after a
particularly brutal skirmish in the mountains north of Voralian City. He was
there as a field medic for the Voralian guard.
He passed out as he witnessed his first bloody battle and fell into muck.
Unfortunately, he looked very much like his drowish father, and some soldiers
- either due to an honest mistake or to torment the half-breed, piled him in
with the dead.
And so he slept atop a soft pillow of bloated corpses, within a tangled cage
of stiff bodies, still luke-warm and intertwined in a rigid orgy of decay.
Imagine the horror when poor Tombury woke up.
You can't.
Craving Affection
Added Wed Jan 8 13:54:46 2014 at level 6:
The dark-elves had taken too many sons and daughters of Seven Pines for their
sympathies to extend to Tombury the half-breed.
The blessings of his heritage made them dislike him even more. He went to
school with their children and excelled, athletically and intellectually.
While maidens became mothers and mothers became crones, he retained his
youthful glow.
And while he hungered for acceptance, he received only spite and passive
rejection, even from his own mother and her husband. They cared for him out
of a sense of duty, but they showed him no affection.
His fellow schoolchildren called him "Tombury Blackblood" because of the
dark-elven blood within his veins. Parents kept their daughters away from him
to avoid the possibility of polluted grandchildren.
But still, Tombury aimed to please. The sensitive young man felt indebted to
his parents and the community of Seven Pines for raising him and wanted to
give back. He learned first aid and basic surgical techniques at the healer's
guild of Voralian City, hoping to one day become the town healer.
He was assigned to a patrol along the Rocky Path. Dark-elven scouts often
peppered the area, particularly near the crevasse, major battles rarely
erupted. Unfortunately for Tombury, bloodshed began almost as soon as he
arrived.
So much blood...
Afterbirth
Added Wed Jan 8 14:19:19 2014 at level 6:
Tombury choked on the stench before his eyes opened. Did his eyes even open?
All he could see was darkness. He commanded his body into action, but he
couldn't move. He wriggled and choked and vomited, then wriggled some more.
Something beneath him burst like a bubble, and everything became tacky, soft,
gooey. Something sharp scratched at his face.
Was he drowning in a swamp? Was this quicksand? He froze. No, he wasn't
sinking. He kept wriggling in a direction he assumed was up. Mnay minutes
later, he realized he was near the bottom of a mountain corpses. About a
hundred of them.
He spent several more hours wriggling out of the heap, passing out at times,
crying and dry heaving as he went. Tombury's thoughts turned inward. His
entire life, he had been hammered over the head with the ideas of goodness
and righteousness. But he spent a day and night with the product of goodness
and righteousness, which seemed to be precisely the same as the product of
wickedness: Death.
In the face of death, all of these distinctions fade away. Men and dark-elves
are all meat in the end. Tombury found this Truth.
And so he was reborn. He emerged back into the world, bloody, gasping,
screaming, in the middle of the night. Voralian guards at first believed he
was a stray drowish zombie before someone recognized him. When he returned
home, the townspeople teased him about it: He was a sissy, a coward, a
light-weight. His drow-blood made him weak, they laughed.
Before, that would have devastated him. It didn't anymore. He became
disinterested in the living and their arbitrary distinctions and instead
developed a fascination with the dead. Dark-elves, wood-elves, high elves,
humans. They're all pink inside.
Tombury was a skilled surgeon. So despite his new eccentricities - which only
provided more gossip fodder for the quiet town - they trusted him to care for
the sick from all of the surrounding villages. They didn't realize that he
wasn't the same young Tombury they had tormented for nearly 30 years. The
sick became dead, and the dead became something else entirely.
By the time they discovered his twisted experiments, he was gone.
There's Something About Tombury
Added Wed Jan 8 14:20:11 2014 at level 6:
Tombury, an avid reader, knows a lot about the history of Thera. He had
previously harbored a deep resentment for dark-elves, but this faded after he
acknowledged he was only trying to win the acceptance of townsfolk who would
never love him.
The teachings of Scarabaeus Sacer, a lich whom he had also previously
abhorred, also began to resonate with him. The great revelation was within
that mound of corpses. The Truth requires further examination.
Tombury has some social deficiencies.
He definitely has some wisdom to share, and his strategies are usually sound,
but he is conversationally tonedeaf and fails to respond to social cues as
most would. It's unclear whether this is intentional or a product of
psychological damage.
(OOC: Namechange, and IC explanation)
Added Wed Jan 15 09:25:46 2014 at level 18:
Tombury has become Thombury to avoid an accidental (perhaps subconscious?) combination
of "Tomb" and "bury."
The IC explanation is that he added the "h" to keep his name while shedding his original
name's specifically regional ties.
Never Alone
Added Thu Feb 6 13:00:49 2014 at level 41:
The Father of Devils called out to Thombury as he battled a warrior of the
Light, and the young necromancer arrived to the holy Mausoleum to find
gathering shadows and a whispering voice.
For all the years Thombury felt alone, it seems Scarabaeus had been watching
him. Finally, the time came that the Father would admit him into the Cult to
be with others like him.
But the decades that followed were not what Thombury expected. The Elders
were often out on holy missions, spreading the Word of the Father and culling
the Profane. He again felt alone.
Finally, one day, his Father called him back to the Mausoleum. There, He
tattooed Thombury the mark of the Ruby Scarab. As Thombury marveled at the
beauty of the mark, he felt his Father's presence. It was only then that
Thombury realized that he was never alone. The Father of Devils has always
been there.
Thombury now dreams of tracing his Father's footsteps to enlightenment, as
Coprophagus has: Becoming a Lich. The thought of a trinity of Liches in the
Temple seems somehow significant.
Otherworldly Things
Added Sat Feb 22 19:32:31 2014 at level 47:
Thombury is troubled by his body's signs of aging. He has become slightly
paranoid and plagued by occasional auditory hallucinations. He believes these
hallucinations to be brought on by spirits from the other side, and he has
begun to put some effort into interpreting their meanings. He has visited the
High Priest of Eil Shaeria, rumored to be the maker of liches, in hopes of
rendering his age irrelevant.
He has come to develop a distaste for Scions in general. While he dislikes
most of the world's residents, he doesn't want it destroyed, either. The
thought of a world ravaged by extraplanar beings doesn't appeal to him, and
the idea of bargaining with them seems foolish.
This growing dislike allowed him to strike a "deal" with the Scion healer
Sindy, before Scarabaeus demanded her death: Some day, Thombury would kill
the Chancellor of Eternal Night in return for Sindy's full support.
Of course, his Father's demand have voided the deal. But once he attains
greater power, Thombury still fully intends to kill the Chancellor, whoever
that may be, to prevent the enslavement or annihilation of the spirit of men
by otherworldly beings.
