Description
Towering over most adventurers, blue-hued skin easily marks this behemoth
as a Storm giant. His hair has a silver-blue hue, but some of the greys
are now due to the old age. Fine lines and creases in his stoic face
are a witness to the indelible imprint of time. Clean shaven, angular,
with square jaw and glimmering green eyes, he has weathered more than
a few bad seasons. Wide, powerful shoulders are unbent and his thick,
muscular arms are corded with the vitality that comes from decades of
physical labour. Yet, despite the unmistakable strength, the giant
does not appear brutish. He has a focused look of one charged with
duty. Thoughtful appearance crosses his brow from time to time, like
winds caressing the sea waves. What armor he possesses is meticulously
cleaned and maintained, bearing witness to military discipline.

A flash of lightning tears through the night. In one split second,
the sheets of rain are reflected as shiny diamonds, whipping the air
furiously. The row upon row of my kin stand silently on ramparts. Every
face etched with grim determination, coral pikes, swords and maces
glistening in the rain. War is afoot.
Old Duke Magvallin got wind of Imperial hordes moving on our Loch
Terradian. A necromancer with hordes of undead minions, obeying his every
twisted desire. A massive fiery giant wielding swords and moving better
than anyone of his size had a right to move. A skinny, lithe bard who,
it was said, especially liked to play twisted games with children. We
know why they were coming. They sought to test their mettle against us
and gain more infamy in the lands of Thera. And now they are here.

Rays of morning sun are warm on my skin. So are the fires reflecting
off of burning ramparts. The Imperial monsters were defeated, but at
such a great cost.
Flashback - haunting bardic melody, and our warriors falling like stones
tossed into lake, in deep slumber.
Flashback - fire giant monster, mowing down foes with hurricane of steel,
edged with defilement.
Flashack - mindless undead minions, pushing with hacked off limbs at
our sword wall, protecting the cackling necromancer.
But then, the rousing call of trumpets and Rusal, crashing like a massive
wave with his squad, into our enemies. His axe arcing with lighting, in a
mighty ooverhead swing that split the degenerate bard in half. The arena
of war is a chaotic place and the winds have shifted to our favour. The
tides have turned and the battle morale was lifted for us, gone for
our foes.
War is chaos. But war is order, too. War is crucible, and in it, all
that matters is forged.
If we are not tested in mettle, how will we ever know what we are capable
of? What is worth fighting for?
I think about all this, as I move with experienced healers. My halberd
is leaning against stone walls. I help however I can. Bandage here,
clean wounds there, watch how the elders do it and try my best to mimic
them. Now is not the time of reaping, but of what comes after War tests
you -- time to rebuild, strengthen, draw lessons and be even better
prepared next time.

Many battles in continual War came after the first one. Many lessons
were learned and many remain to be learned. After every battle, generals
examine pieces on the board, but us soldiers... we examine our own
conscience. What is it that we do and what do we want to be?
I decided I want to be a honed weapon in the great War. I must better
myself physically and spiritually. I know I am good with pikes to
attack. I know how to lend first aid when battle passes. I spoke to
elder priests and warriors and received uniform advice: go to Galadon,
the greatest city of Thera and see a storm giant guildmaster named
Dallantius. If he deems me worthy, I will enroll in the Adventurer's
Academy of Thera and begin making a true difference in our world.

Dallantius agreed to admit me to the guild of Paladins. I found myself
at the gates of the Great Academy of Thera. My mind was whirling like a
leaf in a storm, thinking of countless adventurers who walked through
these gates in all the Ages of Thera. Yet another soldier marches on
and this one is me. With faith in the Light, with strong grip on my pike
and with higher purpose in mind, I marched on.
The teachings of Paladin Code resonate with me. The lessons in combat are
simple, for one who already saw battle. But the higher purpose, that is
not easy to glean. I've seen mindless recruits happy they learned how to
stab -- but not ask themselves, if the blade should have been stayed? Or
why they fight in the first place. Nay, the Academy will not teach you
strategy, nor give you the meaning in life. That is for you to find. All
the academy gives you is training. The rest is up to you and your Gods.

Many a wave has crashed against ramparts of Loch Terradian since I
graduated from the Academy of Thera. Many a battle has been waged, won
or lost and many a lesson learned. Battles come and go, akin to turbulent
storm at seas. But then, storm passes and the calm waters remain. To me,
War is like those calm waters. Always there, undeniable and massive,
and hiding so much underneath the surface. Even when you think you have
smooth sailing ahead of you, seas may start to rage suddenly. And then
you'd better be prepared. So I looked for those seas and found one --
the great Fortress of Thera, the Champions of Light.
The more I saw of their Marshall, Amriith, the more I approved. She is
a great general, marshalling troops and emboldening the spirits. I was
so impressed, that I pledged myself to Fortress. It was the high honour
of my life when I was accepted amongst their ranks, as a Squire in the
great War. And what a war this is! The largest battles against the worst
enemies, always forcing you to learn and adopt. The goal is to secure
the supremacy of the light, but what I like about them is that they are
aware of dangers of falling into mindless bloodshed and savagery. In
other words, they worry about the same things I do! To them, War has a
higher meaning. I feel at home here.

I have served as a soldier of the Fortress of the Light for decades
now. The high honour of my life came when Lady of the Misty Ruin,
mighty Goddess Baerinika herself had addressed me. She wanted to
bestow a mantle of the Maran upon me. In what was supposed to be the
pinnacle of military service of my life, I found myself whipped by
maelstroms of memory. No storm dancing upon Aryth would ever wound
me so. Faces of my idols -- Amriith and Thamuuk, emerged from the
mists of the past. Faces of long departed brothers -- young Hiilos,
who grew to be mighty, mischievous Keinte who grew to lead as a
great hunter -- swam up too. In a moment as quick as the lightning
strike, I measured myself against them, and saw myself as a small
raft next to mighty barges. What did I accomplish? What did I really
do? Nothing, it felt like. So I made a vow to My Lord Panmorne. If
I am worthy to wear mantle of Maran, I will prove it by destroying a
darkheart. If I cannot do this, I do not deserve to wear the mantle.
