Description

Here stands a thick, squat, hairy man with a rigid back and his shoulders puffed out proudly. Although he is even a bit shorter than most of his dwarven kin, he is every bit as stocky as one would expect. His auburn beard and hair are thick and very well kept, as is his polished, shining armor, and his long beard is impressive in the complexity of the weave. The face that peers out from beneath his warhelm is friendly and a bit aloof. He grins briefly to himself as if hes thought of something amusing before resuming his vigilant gaze. Deep-set amethyst eyes brim with smoldering determination and you also see that

Role

The Best Laid Plans ...

Thraininkh braced the old, sagging chair underneath the handle of the door of
his musty basement room and said a quick prayer to the Goddess that this
would at least give him a head start if his pursuers were to find him tonight
and the chair didnt hold the door shut. As he wearily kicked off his boots
and removed his outer armor, he ruminated on the events of the last half day.
Perhaps he had gotten a little overly excited and done a poor job of reading
the room, and he most assuredly had pressed the issue further than anyone
else expected, but why couldnt the elders see what was plain to
Thraininkh?

He chortled to himself as he ate what scraps he had grabbed
during his flight from the Mountain and drank a very disappointing burgundy
provided by the innkeeper. His biggest mistake, obviously, had been punching
Bahdol in his fat nose in front of everyone, but Thraininkh would cut his
beard before he would let his childhood friend, and one of the only members
of the guard that was lower ranked than he was, manhandle him that way in
front of Ludan and the others. Bahdol had a good heart, but neither the
foresight nor the determination necessary to garner Thraininkhs respect.

While things most certainly had not gone as expected today, the foundations
of a new plan for peace were already coalescing in Thraininkhs mind. If he
wasnt able to convince those in charge of the war effort in Mortorn of the
wisdom in reaching out to the Spire to create an alliance to would restore
order under the Mountain, then he would just have to work towards his goal
another way. The people he had left in Mortorn would most likely need twenty
or thirty years to cool off and forgive him, so he would use that time in
exile to begin moving the pieces on the chessboard that is the outside world.
Thraininkh would not be deterred even by the loss of his home. He keep
pushing southeast until he found the Goddess Ishuli, the Witch of the Eternal
Library, and beseech Her divine aid in bringing peace and order to his home.

"History, Stephen said, is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake."

Dear Ma -

Ishuli be praised, the foundations of my plan seem to be in place. I knew my
faith in the Curator was not misplaced, even in the darkest days of my exile. I
can't help but wonder now if the prescience that drove me to seek the shaman's
guild and the Eternal Library was my own. Was it a first note of Divine
inspiration inked onto my spirit that began this journey, just as a single
spark may ignite a forge fire that will burn for centuries and produce
innumerable pieces?

Since fleeing Mortorn, I had to learn quickly to live in the outside world. I
settled into a relatively peaceful residence in Galadon (the lack of the
constant hum of war was disconcerting at first, but I'm sleeping better now),
I'm proud to say I secured a role in the Tribunal Spire as a Magistrate, and
most importantly I've been blessed with Lady Ishuli's presence and power and
entreated Her guidance and aid in my quest to end the Great War. (Yar, I know
how you feel about this.) Much like the dwarven gods of yore, the Curator's
blessings are earned, not freely given. She offered to help me find the
Knowledge I sought, but in return I must transcribe the results of my
investigation for the Eternal Library. This arrangement is agreeably generous,
but I'm damn surprised (and flattered!) that Ishuli would want the results of
my work. To be honest, I never considered myself a scholar before, but the idea
has since begun to take root and I can't shake the suspicion that my true
calling may be as more than purely a combatant.

Ma - I've got a confession to make: I've been back into the Mountain a few
times since they ran me out. Don't you worry, though, I kept my head down and
my hood up, I didn't use the family name, and nobody seemed to recognize me.
I'm sorry I didn't stop by, but I didn't want to cause any more trouble for you
than I already have. I figure Ludan has probably calmed down by now anyway, but
it's best to be sure the forge is cool before you sit on it. I had to get back
in for research, though, and it couldn't wait. While I haven't pushed beyond
the fortifications yet, I've spent days looking for information on the early
days of the Great War. The Library, sad to say, has been damaged beyond repair
and ransacked. The Hall of Remembrance, though, is full of history from floor
to ceiling. The writing is arcane, though, and I cannot understand the older
script. I wonder if any alive still can. Most of what I can read describes
Kor's life and deeds. I must admit that the more I learn of him, the more I see
parallels between us in some aspects. Whether these thoughts are hubris or

The time is neigh to return to my duties, so I'll end this letter here. Give my
love to the family, and know that if you need to contact me for anything, you
can leave word at the Tribunal Spire in Galadon. I hope and believe the day
will come soon when I can return unhidden to the Mountain, but until then I
think it best to talk this way.

"Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves."

You find yourself looking over a worn but mostly well-kept leather journal.
Some of the pages have wine stained red thumbprints on the corners, but for the
most part the book appears to be well guarded and cared for. The journal is
open to a page that is mostly filled with what seem to be random short notes,
ideas, and curiosities that Thraininkh has jotted down in passing for further
study. Some of the blocky, hastily written scrawl reads:

"Lyceum: nothing helpful found yet, but further research warranted. Don't dally
in there, they kick you out faster'n a whore that figured out you're broke."

"Delar-Tol: High hopes the Old Dwarves will remember something since forgotten
... I found a library stacked to the roof! ... That damn library is so full I
can't find anything..."

"Mortorn: It's good to be home, even if I have to hide my face for the time
being. The library is empty, shelves, tables, and all ... As many spiders as
words in there now. What in the hells are the summoning circles for?
The Hall of Remembrance- the walls are full of arcane writing, but I can't read
enough of it! The room is full of Knowledge that's beyond me ... Mayhaps I can
find a way to focus or strengthen my revelatory powers in order to look back
into the past and see what was ...
Kor: There's much to learn of Kor in the Lower Halls that we didn't learn as
pups, but I have more questions now than before. Apparently the Avatar had a
longer and more arduous journey to achieving the Purity of his spirit than
we're taught as younglings. Regardless, I'm struck by some of the commonalities
between Kor and I. We've both dedicated ourselves to our Duty, we both have
trained beyond simple martial combat, we both saw the Scales of Justice as a
guiding light.

So many questions remain, though: Did Kor start the Great War or did it rage
already and he is one of the few that brought it to peace, if only temporarily?
What became of Ironoak, is his story known? How was the bond between the
dwarves and forest guardians broken? "

The final entry on the page is a single line, written in a more unsteady hand
and divided from the rest of the writing on the page by a dark wine smudge:
"EXILE HAS FOLLOWED ME TO THE SPIRE"

"If we will be quiet and ready enough, we shall find compensation in every disappointment."

Ishuli says 'The troubles of decisions is that we must make them.'

Ishuli smiles happily.

Thraininkh closes his eyes and focuses himself, centering his powers of
Revelation and letting them flow through him.

Thraininkh exhales halfway and stops, holding the breath while his beard
quivers to stillness.

Thraininkh opens his eyes and looks up at you, his jaw set anew.

You say 'My feet have always walked the path of Vengeance.'

Ishuli says 'And so the path shall be walked.'

As your resolve flows through you, you begin to feel refreshed.

You have been imbued with the gifts of Vengeance.

Ishuli says 'I hope to see the fluency through which you use it.'

Thraininkh flexes his hands and relaxes them, feeling new Knowledge course
through his veins.

You say 'There will be new studies te undertake, te be sure.'

Ishuli says 'Without doubt.'

Ishuli says 'And study is always enjoyable.'

You say to Ishuli 'With this study, my others studies should also advance.'

A joyful smile graces Ishuli's face as she looks toward you.

You say 'Soon I'll press inte the bowels of the Mountain.'

Ishuli says 'All things come in time. And with the path of Vengeance, your
vengeance is all the more assured.'

You say to Ishuli 'Also, your previous gift was most ... educational.'

A wry little smile crosses Ishuli's face.

Ishuli says 'Frail, of course, but I am glad it was educational.'

You say to Ishuli 'Full disclosure, I broke it tryin' te smith it.'

Thraininkh smiles wistfully.

You say 'Too proud, I was.'

Ishuli chuckles politely.

Ishuli says 'A perfectly valid use.'

Ishuli says 'Experiment often results in failure.'

Ishuli says 'But we often learn from it as much as we do success.'

You say 'But..., the fragments yielded more knowledge than the whole.'

Ishuli says 'Interesting.'

You say 'The inner hilt, and the lower blade had more runes. Even older.'

You say 'More study is needed, but I think those runes compliment some of the
more modern ones on the outer blade.'

You say 'Translation may be possible.'

Ishuli says 'Interesting. I have met a few interested in hoping to learn the
rune-work of the Dwarves.'

Thraininkh begins to move his hands about, clearly exited at the prospects.

You nod.

You say 'The Hall of Remembrance is full of runes older than our modern
knowledge. I wonder what I could learn from them'

You drink wine from a bottle of 'Arvam's Passion'.
You feel tipsy.

You say 'or what I will learn.'

You nod wisely.

Ishuli says 'Hopefully as much as history has to offer.'

Ishuli nods sagely.
