Description

There seems to be an unusual sense of calmness about this massive Giant of a man. His pace is steady, elegant and controlled. His movements seem deceptively slow, because of his large size, but in reality, you notice that he makes good speed. His skin, deep-blue like the depths of the ocean, has a faint pearly gleam to it, as if constantly wet. Thick strands of dark-green hair, almost black, fall well beyond his shoulders. You notice that the hair seems extremely curly, which is why the strands are woven into thick dreads. While at a whole looking quite natural, you notice that the weaving is too fine to be truely random. Two pale green eyes gaze forward with a gentle, but very vibrant look. While the man has obviously seen numerous battles, it's amazing how unscathed he really seems to be. He's got the weathered look, but no scars or visible bruises to show for it, whatsoever.

Role

Life is simple

Added Sun Dec 26 14:57:48 2010 at level 1:
Life is simple, really. The greatest gift is to be alive, anything beyond
that is a bonus.

While this may seem fatalistic or even cynical, it really isn't. Because,
once you accept that fact, it becomes easy to enjoy the simple things.

Friends, a good meal and a tasty drink, these in themselves can be considered
luxuries. Especially when you consider how many have less. They have to
scavenge whatever they might find, or perish. They have to drink dirty water
from filthy mud pools, risking infection and disease. When you keep this in
mind, you should feel very fortunate, when although you have little cash, you
still are able to walk into an Inn or welcoming home, and find all you need,
to spend a pleasant evening.

But, to have all that, you have to work hard, you have to make the most of
your life. You have to be ambitious and dedicated, passionate about what you
wish to be and accomplish. You have to be clear of mind and calm, in
everything you do, patient and ultimately quite relentless.

When you manage that, you've already come a long way. When you can remain
modest and humble and not embrace greed or ruthlessness, you may truely be
set upon the path towards the Light.

Thuorn, the union of two different lifestyles

Added Sun Dec 26 15:24:05 2010 at level 1:
Thuorn is the son of Terham and Mishra. Terham, his father, was a Ranger,
hunting the depths of the Aryth Ocean for food and enemies. Mishra, his
mother, was a Paladin attached to the Voralian City Guild and working as a
guide for the Eternal Star Inn.

As such, Thuorn was able to taste the wonders that can be found in the
wilderness, but also those that may be encountered within the more civilized
parts of the world.

From his father, he learned to appreciate everything that nature presents us
with. He's learned about the code of the Wild:

- It is harsh, so that we may be strong and prosper.
- Respect all living things and they shall respect you.
- Hunt only out of necessity, honor the fallen.
- Never take (or kill) more than what you need.
- Ride the wave, do not fight it.

Terham also told Thuorn about the Seasons and their names:

Spring, Lifegiver
Sun, Lightbearer
Autum, Nourisher
Winter, Guardian

From his mother, Mishra, he learned about the Paladin Code. To wander the
wild is a lonely occupation, and Thuorn has always enjoyed the crowds that
gather at the Eternal Star Inn. As such, he was more inclined to join the
Paladin Guild, when the time came, though he's never forgotten the wisdom
that his father shared with him.

From his education, he has learned to be patient and calm, like the Hunter,
and to be self-assured, so that others will want to be around you and be
inspired.

From the Paladin Guild, he's learned everything he needs to, to earn the
title 'The Humble'. What ever else he may learn, he will find out right now!

Book of People - Chapter 1 - Araille Desert Village

Added Mon Jan 3 05:24:15 2011 at level 37:
When one enters the village just off Caravan Road, you immediatelly see how
vigilant the warrior guards are. They are polite and correct, but very strict
in the way they handle the merchants passing through the watches. Their
countenance is fierce, but with good reason, for many bandits wander the
deserts.

Once passed the watches, you will notice that the villagers seem equally
grim, but only because they've adapted themselves to live within the desert.
It is harsh and unforgiving, and so are it's people. There is beauty in the
wastes, as the sun rises behind the horizon, with many shades of orange and
red, fiery and wild, as is the desert dwellers' heart.

If one is honest with Life and himself, even a fierce heart will see the
virtue that lies in compassion and hospitality. We all face the same
hardships, so it is only natural that we are treated as equals. That is how
the desert people see it, and they act upon it.

Once they let you into their tent-homes, you notice that they are cozy,
minimalistic and very practical in their decoration. You will see no
luxuries, only the necessary tools to make live bareable and enjoyable.

As can be witnessed daily on the buzy and bustling camp center, trade is very
important to the people. Items made from bone, hide or rock are traded with
whatever is considered a decent bargain.

When you are greeted by the leader, you notice that he displays many
trophies, to emphasize the status that accompanies his status. As the one who
guards his people against danger, he is clearly a great warrior, capable and
able in his own right. Without a doubt, he is a formidable hunter as well.

Once you walk through the camp, no doubt you will have noticed the Obelisk
that stands south of the leader's tent. Well over twenty feet, it will be
hard to miss. At it's feet are worn out stones, that spell out a now
forgotten word. Only 'ar' and 'l' can be read.

Would that be Araile? The desert that is these people's home. The people whom
are as grim and beautiful as the place that is known by that name.

Beyond the Obelisk is also the tent of the Elders, it shows the grandeur that
comes with the wisdom of their age, but it also humble and inviting. While
their councils might perhaps not be all too concerned about the world at
large, I have no doubt that it will be a blessing upon anyone willing to
listen. I know as a witness, that the young soak in every word they say.

Catch the Wave, part 1

Added Wed Jan 12 13:21:08 2011 at level 48:
A middle-aged Giant is sitting on a single rock, alone in the vastness of the
Aryth Ocean. Next to him sits a very young boy, wom, judging by the way they
interact to one another, is clearly the larger Giant's son.

The Giant says "It is time, son. You must find the wave."

As the boy slides down the rock, into the Ocean, it is clear that he is an
experienced swimmer, yet there is clear anxiety on his face. The father sees
it, yet does not speak about it, as he glides down the water behind his son.

As both Storm Giants are now being engulfed by towering high waves, they are
now both in the middle of a ferocious tempest, dark deep-blue waves crashing
upon the two tiny specks, swimming against the waves.

As the father just follows his son, he sees that the young boy is struggling.
He swims too well to be in any real danger, yet he does not seem to be at all
able to regain controls, being tossed here and there, unable to hold a
specific direction.

As the boy is rolled back one more time, the father intercepts him, and holds
him close to him.

"Do you think that fighting solves anything?"

Too smitten by the thought of the waves he was rolling about in, just a
moment ago, the boy does not seem to understand.

"Why do you struggle? Surrender yourself."
(continued)

Catch the Wave, part 2

Added Wed Jan 12 13:21:53 2011 at level 48:
With a gleam in his eyes, the father let's go of the boy, leaving him to
float along with the waves, where they were.

Swiftly, the father swims away, ever further, through the very same waves
that caught the boy, but he does it with ease, as if there was no storm at
all. As if they were swimming in a quiet lake, not the furious ocean that is
the Aryth, caught in a wild hurricane.

After some time, the father reappears, coming back to the son, going very
fast now, picked up by the waves, going at the same speed. Soon he is with
the boy again.

"Physically, you swim just as good as I do, perhaps even better, you have the
vigor of youth in you. Do you know why you were unable to catch the wave?"

The boy slowly shakes his head, the dreads glimmering with water and the
lightning that reflects in it.

"You went out to best the waves, to defeat them, but you cannot defeat
nature. All you can do is go along with it. Catch the wave, do not fight it."

"Do not idly flap your arms, as if trying to fly, but wait for the wave to
come down, then dive into the water, so that the surf will not push you down,
rather you will be caught in the updraft behind it."

"Rise, and pick up speed, as the wave loses momentum, so that you are ready
to ride with the next wave."

"Once you accept things as they are, you will see them for what they are.
Keep it simple, embrace things, rather than fight them."

"Do you know what I speak of?"

It is clear judging by the boys reaction, that such is the case.

Laughing out loud, the father ruffles through the boy's dreads, and swims out
into the ocean once more, yelling "Follow me than!".

Swimming just as the father does, both giants head into the waves, and
embrace it, emerging from the backside, unscathed, picking up speed again.

A personal approach

Added Mon Mar 7 14:55:04 2011 at level 51:
An elder giantess is looking amused, as she sees her son walking through the
main hall of the Inn of the Eternal Star, as almost all eyes seem to be on
the Paladin, some with admiration, some with envy and a few with clear
hatred.

Mishra says 'You're clearly good at getting people's attention.', followed by
a warm laugh.
Thuorn says 'Hi mom, if it convinces even a single one of all the people in
there, to better his life, than it's worth all those who watch me with
disdain.'
Mishra replies 'But, it would be better to convince all of them, right?',
with a smile on her face.
Thuorn says 'One at a time, mom. Can't expect to make a real difference if
you treat them all alike.'
Thuorn continues 'As a matter of fact, that's what I came to discuss with
you.'
Mishra nods and says 'Come, let us move into the kitchen and give those eyes
out there a little rest.'

Thuorn laughs softly and follows his mother into the kitchen.
Mishra goes to sit in a comfortable chair near the hearth, the fire burning
ferociously, the flames heating up the kitchen.
Mishra says 'You seem ... troubled, I hear the Fortress is a bit of a mess
these days?'

Thuorn responds 'Well, I suppose that would be true, it does feel strange to
be the only one on the roster now. And it's outright painful to have to see a
friend walk out of the gate in shame, for what might be his last time.'

Mishra puts an arm on the Paladin's shoulder, in comfort.

Thuorn continues 'And now Radik tells me he's lost his loved one, Derialx.'
Thuorn says 'She seemed outrighted shocked by that whole Drayden business,
and I can't exactly blame her, I knew he was wild, but, I hope he has not
gone feral.'

Mishra says 'Athioles is fine though?'

Thuorn replies 'Well yes, he seems to be, though it's going to take some
getting used to, to not be able to greet him as Marshall anymore. At least
he's found his way as a Maran again.'
Mishra nods agreeingly and says 'But, you had something on your mind?'

Thuorn responds 'Aye, all these things got me thinking, aiming to inspire
others in itself is fine, but, it's still a rather broad approach.'
Thuorn continues 'While it seems Derialx seemed to have gone beyond anyhow, I
do feel easier, knowing she did it while at peace with things.'

Thuorn says 'After the whole Drayden affair, I went to see her and was able
to console her at least a little. I've come to the conclusion that a personal
approach works best.'

Thuorn proceeds 'Also, we should not just limit ourselves to those directly
around us, but also tend to the lost, who still wander, even while they dwell
within the Light.'
As the evening continues, mother and son continue talking, but not a whole
lot of politics anymore, more about cake recipes, father and seeing the sun
rise behind the ocean.

A most terrifying dream.

Added Mon Apr 4 14:14:59 2011 at level 51:
As you lay down to rest, you feel yourself slip into a dream, but you feel
more aware, than usual, as if almost conscious.

"As the sun rises slowly above the Aryth Ocean, a deep red light colors the
horizon.

"It is as if the entire sky is bright red and deep orange, even while there
is no sign of the sun."

"Suddenly a black divide runs through the middle, as if torn by a massive
claw."

"As the blackness covers the sky, it is suddenly everywhere, as if you've
stepped into the void."

"You feel yourself fall and a fierce pain runs through your chest, as you are
impaled by a spear."

"As the blood starts to run out of your mouth, across your chin, you hear the
mad cackle of, ... an Orc?"

"As your head falls down, you see the legs of the beast, black scales
covering them."

As your head stops moving and life almost has poured out of you completely,
you wake up abruptly, screaming loudly.

A meeting with a friend

Added Thu May 5 13:31:58 2011 at level 51:
After a lot of walking around in the mud, through the forest, Thuorn reaches
the clearing that was described to him. And indeed he finds the shack there,
so covered with leaves and overgrown with moss, it would be very hard to
find, had he not been given directions for it. Inside, Thuorn finds an old
ranger.

"Who disturbs ... ah, it's you, yes, it's unmistakable. I am Gnarith, the man
you seek."
Slowly, but yet remarkably swiftly for an old man, the Ranger walks to a
chair near the fireplace and sits down, indicating that Thuorn should do the
same.
"Now, about your inquiries, I don't know where your father is, he's supposed
to be here some time ago, we had arranged a meeting, or else I would not be
here either. And then you called out, so I stayed a while longer. It is very
much not like him that he is not here."

"Given the amount of time that has passed, I can only conclude that your
father has disappeared, and I would suggest you go look around at the Kuo Toa
lair. "

"Well, we caught wind of a grand scheme they're pulling, or preparing to.
Something bigger than the usual petty nuisances they do."

"Your father went to scout ahead and was supposed to meet me here afterwards,
clearly he hasn't been able to."

"You think you should go have a look at the King? Mmm ... Yes, perhaps that
is necessary, you could at least learn more from him."
