Description
A barrel chested dwarven priest stands before you in the robes of an acolyte.
He wears the warmest of smiles across his face, carrying mirth and good-will
every where he goes. A massive red beard is tucked away under his chin, just
the girth of it suggests that unrolled it may go all the way down to his
toes. Along with his robes he carries a simple shield and a wooden hammer,
that does not look threatening in any way. You notice that there is a slight
limp in this dwarf's step that seems to favor his left leg, perhaps an injury
or a birth defect?

The lame dwarf

Last in the long line of Thanes of the Thiggursun lineage, Thurk was also the
first to disappoint. Born of Rongar Thiggursun, the fabled lich slayer of
the forge everyone expected Thurk to take after his father as a menace to
those that would challenge the sanctity of Mortorn. Unfortunately for poor
Thurk, he was born was a weak leg that never grew any stronger over the
years. He was always last in any physical task that was assigned, limping
his way to the finish line when others had sprinted ahead finished their work
and gone on to enjoy the fruits of their labor.Oddly enough though, Thurk
never let it sour him in the least bit.Dead last on just about everything,
there were two things that set Thurk apart from the rest. One he finished
everything that was given to him, be it a task, a race, a meal or a flagon
and second he always finished it with a smile on his face. The lame leg did
nothing to dash his cheerful nature nor his optimism, in-fact it he looked at
every task as a blessing. To Thurk it was a sign of being treated as an
equal, he would relish every challenge and take his sweet time with it.As
he grew up he became a resource for those things that other dwarves could not
be bothered to do, or would treat like a chore.
The medic

Dwarves are not known to be particularly nurturing, and this is true of their
medics as well.Medicine among the dwarves is just whatever patch it takes
to get them back into battle without their guts falling back out. It was no
surprise that Thurk found himself being assigned to the task of being a field
medic during the skirmishes that often took place in the ongoing battle for
Mortorn. But in this task being slow and relishing the work was a boon for
the dwarves of Mortorn.Often those tended to by Thurk, came back to the
fight reinvigorated both in body and in spirit.Thurk became the one that
tended over the ones that had the most devastating injuries, taking his time
to nurture them back to health and providing them with kindness that would
often mend the spirit. The empathy that oozed from the lame dwarf was soon
noticed by some of the priests in service of the Morton brigades.
Despite years of encouragement, Thurk was never able to commune with the light to
provide salve to the ailments of battle. He became one of the best medics but
lacked the faith in himself to be able to commune in service to those that
were suffering. On the day of his 48th anniversary of birth, Thurk found
himself tending to a particularly wounded dwarf. Taking his sweet time to
tend to the fellow, Thurk did not realize that the battle lines had been
re-drawn. That other dwarves had retreated past the station and he was not
firmly behind enemy lines just himself and his ward, a heavily wounded
berserker. It was not long before their surroundings became hostile, the
berserker knew that end was near and demanded Thurk make a run for it. Thurk
had never run to or from anything in his life, mostly due to his lame leg but
also due to his disposition. Thurk shook his head and continued tending to
the hurt dwarf, when the duergar approached. Thurk ignored it and kept
scooping the guts to put back into the berserker. When the duergar prodded
him with the spear, Thurk ignored the pain and wrapped the bandage. When the
duergar hooted and hollered for others, Thurk stayed with his task, smiling
at his hurt friend while he did, he best to save him. When the duergar
impaled him through the lame leg, Thurk screamed in pain and kept with the
task. As the duergar approached for the killing blow, the scream became
something far greater and with-it Thurk passed out.
The miracle

Two days later Thurk came to, surrounded by priests poking and prodding at
him. His lame leg had been bandaged and from the look of it a considerable
amount of healing prayers had been applied to it. Oddly enough the berserker
he had been tending to sat by his bed, and he looked remarkably well off far
a dwarf that was recently having his guts shoved back into his stomach.Yer
stubborn bastard, yer saved us both! A meek smile is all Thurk could muster
before he passed out again.Thurk came to again, several days later and found
himself much farther along than his last two waking moments. The priests had
finished tending over him, the berserker had gone on to the next battle. Just
one old dwarf remained behind, puffin his pipe and watching over Thurk.
According to the old dwarf, Thurk accomplished a minor miracle down in the
tunnels. During the brutal assault, when Thurk let out the scream he also
communed an extreme amount of healing that instantly the berserker. So great
was his prayer that berserker was able to withstand a heated battle with
numerous foes, taking debilitating blows without even a scratch. The
berserker extinguished any immediate threats and dragged Thurk back to
safety. The interest from the priests came from Thurks sudden ability to
commune and mend the berserker at a level that even the most prolific healers
in Mortorn would not have believed possible.
The Neophyte
Added Sat Apr 8 14:28:21 2023 at level 13:
Unfortunately for Thurk, this event did not turn him into a miracle worker.
Over the next few years Thurk and other priests spent a considerable amount
of time and effort trying to recreate the event to no avail. What Thurk was
left with is an inkling of communing, much like what most neophytes are a
capable of, where there had been none before. That and a lot of questions.
To answer these questions, Thurk has set out into the realm to forge a path
on his own. Someone or something blessed him that night to allow him to do
the impossible, he would dedicate the rest of his time to find out what made
him worthy of it. Something deep within him drives him to seek a temple atop
a mountain, with a guardian on a broken staircase.
