Primly dressed and properly poised, Tivlin Longbranch stands upright, bearing her petite frame with dignity. Resting atop a thin arcane robe, gleaming proudly from her shoulder, is a copper badge declaring her allegiance to the Blood Tribunal. In characteristic Hillcrest fashion her coarse brown hair, now streaked with strands of grey, is neatly kept in two braids that fall to the middle of her back, each fastened at the ends with a copper-toned ribbon tied into a bow. Perhaps the only thing unusual about this woman is the sparkling emerald green eye that sits unmoving on the left side of her face, staring directly in front of her at all times - regardless of where her other, less-vibrantly green, slightly smaller eye is looking.

A brief chronology of Tivlin Longbranch's pre-adventurer life:

- Born and raised in Hillcrest to the owners of the Longbranch Pub.
- At roughly 15 years of age is kidnapped.
- From ages 15 to 35 is held prisoner. Learns elemental magic and pretends to
be able to predict the future.
- Age 23, kidnapper cuts out her eye to "help" her connect to the unseen.
- Age 35, murders her kidnapper, bonds to the copper pocketwatch, flees
Hillcrest.
- Ages 35-55, wanders from city to city attempting to find healing and purpose.
- Age 60, comes to term with her madness, wants to help others, pledges to the
Blood Tribunal.

Memories: part one

"What happened to yer eye?"

Tivlin Longbranch glanced up towards the red-cheeked face of the Galadonian
baker with a blank stare, her fingers clenched around a thick piece of
parchment. She had woken hardly 20 minutes prior and had come just for an
energizing slice of berry pie. It was far too early for such a question.

Should she tell the truth? The last time she had, it hadn't gone well. She
still vividly remembered the look of horror on the poor woman's face --
Dorothy, her name was -- and the sudden silence that befell the Voralian City
shop when she told of the kidnapper, the knife, the strange obsession with
prophecy.

Nobody in that shop spoke to her anymore. Perhaps she should learn to leave
some parts out.

She had once tried to explain to another pushy stranger, a passerby on the
streets of Udgaard, that some people believed that use of one's eyes stopped
you from really seeing, and so one of hers was cut out. But then the stranger
agreed and began spouting a memorized script about the ways that rocks write
to us (if only we would read), and asked where Tivlin found a doctor willing
to perform such a procedure, and would she like to join their circle of
witches, where they read each other's fortunes in crystals? With her lips
pressed so tightly together she thought they would meld, Tivlin pulled out a
small copper pocketwatch, made some nonsense comment about the time, and left
the stranger stranded in the street.

Tivlin did not consider herself a witch. Witchcraft, she thought, was the name
for the sort of deception that powerless crones partook in to deceive others.
Witches were phonies and liars. They told themselves that they could read
fortunes, predict the future, and see the spirits of the undead, and then they
conned others into believing it too.

Tivlin's kidnapper had attempted to turn her into a witch. In doing so he had
made her a mage.

Memories: part two

It was about a year before he cut out her eye that he started to teach her
elemental magic. "If you connect with the world that we all see," he had said,
"you will find it easier to connect to the one that only you can." He was
convinced that Tivlin could predict the future. She could not. She knew that
she could not, and she knew that anybody who said that they could was a liar.
But she did what she felt she must to survive, and so she dutifully absorbed
the magic lessons.

This ended up being his downfall and her freedom, if one could call it that.
He had brought her to her old home, the family's pub in Hillcrest, and
demanded she burn it. It would prove her loyalty, he said. It would prove that
she knew the value of what she could see and he could not.

She couldn't do it. She brought fire, yes, just as he directed, but instead of
lighting her home she twisted the flames down his arm until they snaked around
his privates and choked his limbs. He burnt so easily for one who had seemed
as demanding as the oceans.

The moment after he died was a strange one. His charred, still-twitching body
sent up plumes of smoke and indented the grass of Sunset Park. A small child
dropped his copper toy, screamed, and ran for the safety of his home. Tivlin
took in the sights and the sounds and the smells and knew that she could never
return to Hillcrest. The event would forever haunt her and the guilt of murder
would forever mar her.

She picked up the toy. It was the copper pocketwatch, ticking merrily away as
if nothing unordinary had occurred. Time is like that, she thought.
Consistent. Brutal.

She ran away from both the memory and the shame; first to Udgaard, then to
Voralian City, and then to Galadon. She tried to forget how to bring fire and
why it was important that she was not a witch. But she could never escape, and
she could never bring herself to be rid of that horrible ticking pocketwatch,
so she decided at last to move forward and help others, even though she
couldn't help herself. And so she came to the bakery for motivation to submit
the paper in her hand to the Blood Tribunal. "My name is Tivlin Longbranch,"
the first line read, "and I seek to become a Magistrate."

"You hear me all the way down there?" the baker suddenly asked, cutting
through her foggy thoughts. "Was wondering what happened to yer eye."

Tivlin met his gaze with her singular green eye. She began to laugh. "Tick,
tick, tick!" she exclaimed, her head jolting slightly to the left with each
iteration of the word. "Tick, tick, tick!"

On madness

There was a madman that came to visit the Longbranch Pub when Tivlin was a
child. His clothes were torn and his skin was covered in pus-oozing boils. He
had a shrill, raspy voice; his vocal chords destroyed by the burn of alcohol
that was constantly shoved down his throat. But that didn't stop him from
speaking. He raved night and day of twittering, tapping rats, rats that
overcame his shack and crawled over all of his food and swished their scaly
tails against his face as he slept. The rats were his friends, he said,
friends who adored him and would never leave him unlike anyone else in the
world.

Tivlin remembered wondering how a person could ever fall into such despair. No
ordinary person, she thought, could allow their mental state to disintegrate
that much. No ordinary person could hide that from their family or friends
long enough for it to get that bad.

But now Tivlin knew that madness was less of a switch, as she had thought of
it back then, and more of a fog; one that creeps in slowly, unnoticed, until
it nearly completely clouds one's vision and muddles one's thoughts. It was
easy to hide the fog from other people, especially while it was still thin. It
got harder as it became thicker.

Tivlin's fog had been growing steadily thicker since she fled Hillcrest. At
first it was hardly noticeable at all -- a wispy tendril, a whispered thought.
By the time she reached Voralian City it had become a misty cloud. Always
present, always coating her thoughts in its thin, loving embrace. Here in
Galadon at the bakery, it was the thickest it had ever been. Tivlin could
hardly see through the clouds. Instead she saw images of dancing unicorns and
bent-over witches with their gaudy crystal balls. Perhaps this is what her
kidnapper meant when he wanted her to see the unseen.

Cutting through the dense fog came a sharp, clear sound, the first one she had
really heard since entering the bakery. "Tick!" said the piece of copper
resting in her pocket. "Time will pass and so will this. Tick!"

"Tick, tick, tick!" she repeated, taking her slice of pie from the confused
baker. "Tick, tick!"

She took her pie and her paper and her pocketwatch to one of the little wooden
tables and closed her eyes, listening. The fog slowly began to burn away.

An excerpt from Tivlin's diary

Dear Diary:

I went back to the pub today. I didn't want to but I did. I needed to see what
would happen.

They didn't recognize me wearing the cloak that Rhanie made for me. It was
bright orange with an ornate hood, not something at all that the Tivlin of
childhood would wear. I don't think they would have recognized me anyways, it
has been so long. But the hood helps. I'm not me when I wear it. I'm not a
killer or a judge or a madwoman. I'm just a traveler who they'll never see
again.

I hated seeing the family. They're not "mine" anymore. They're not strangers
and not acquaintances either. They bustled around in the shop as if they never
had another daughter, another sister. They looked that traveler in the eye.
They sold her bread with honey and told her to have a nice day. They saw her
but they didn't see me. I'm forgotten. I'm free when I wear Rhanie's cloak.
Free!

Ignoring the signs

She didn't believe in omens. Omens were untrustworthy, unpredictable, and
unreal -- creations of one's mind that attempted to trick you away from
reason.

No, she didn't believe in omens. But it was difficult even for her to look
past the glaring examples of former Tribunals who had fallen as she had risen:
Ritel and Wophen.

She held no qualms against either of them. In fact, she had even blinked back
tears after begging Ritel to remain within the Spire (and she never cried).
Nonetheless, revoking his badge was the first act she took as Provincial.
Later, revoking Wophen's was her first as Provost.

Was it indicative of what the Spire may come to under her leadership?

For a while the worry gnawed at her, eating away at her insides like how a
fire melts away the ice. But Tivlin did not know how to deal with worry, so
she treated it like she treated every other unpleasant thing and ran away from
it, locking the memory deep in the recesses of her mind, where it sat
underneath a too-broadly--smiling mask of flesh and bone. Concerns promptly
forgotten, she pushed forward to the new normalcy of fulfilling a Provost's
duties.

But though they were forgotten, they did not cease to exist. Simmering quietly
they lingered, casting quiet shades of doubt over her thoughts and actions.
Though she didn't realize it, there was a pressure building within her,
molding into a dense orb of stress that slowly built in size and strength with
the passage of time.

Tick, tick, tick.

Emptiness

By all accounts she should be happy.

She had everything that she had worked for: a functioning Spire, a community
of friends, and, now, a healthy brain. And to some extent she was happy.
Rather, she was grateful -- very grateful, and to prevent others from thinking
otherwise she kept that same broad smile plastered on her face. But even she
could not deny the emptiness that was left in stead of the fog that had
accompanied her for so many centuries.

Perhaps it was not ideal, nor conducive to good health, but Tivlin's fog had
guided so much of her life that she did not know how to live without it. Like
before, she found herself wondering uneasily when it would suddenly thicken
and steal her away. Like before, she continually made contingency plans about
what to do should she find herself in a strange place on a strange continent
with no memory of how she got there. Like before, she kept that horrible
ticking pocketwatch in a pouch close to her heart, fingers itching to grasp it
at any moment.

Logically, she knew that no such things were necessary. She had seen and felt
the gray fog leave her soul. She had watched as it entered the pocketwatch --
not hers, of course, but a different one -- and as the Lord Zizaerix himself
trapped it inside. She had looked into a pile of shadows, twisting,
contorting, and screaming, and fought against them as they attempted to clutch
onto her soul, bleeding their insanity into her own mind. She had seen the
wounds such a battle had inflicted onto Raevyn. And she had seen the madness
itself defeated.

"I am glad," Raevyn had told her afterwards, "Glad you are free of such
a curse."

She had nodded, and, in the Apotheosis' temple, in the presence of one of his
Truthseekers, lied. "I am too."
