Tolgrumm Hammerhand the Voice of the Jaguar, Captain of the Brigade

Faesham Hammerhand paced nervously outside of the bedroom, pipe in hand, his
breath less fouled by ale than it normally would be.  "Fargin' 'ells.  How
long for this shite?"  He swore again and began chewing his pipe as another
scream issued from the bedroom. His footsteps were fast and heavy even as
the pipe's stem splintered in his mouth. "Fargin' 'ells!"

Glancing about for anyone who might overhear, the old dwarf muttered another
short prayer to Aarn, knowing it might not be heard. But as if it had, the
loud screams from the bedroom subsided, replayed by a somewhat quieter but
shriller cry.

Faesham's eyes opened wide as the dwarven midwife stuck her head out of the
door. "Ye going to just stand 'ere, you dumb sod, or ye comin' to meet yer
son?"

Bursting through the door, Faesham's locked his eyes on his wife, his
firstborn son in her arms.  His heart melted like smelted ore, and he had to
cough gruffly to cover the emotion in his voice. "Me boy," he said.  "Yer
belongin' to Aarn."

Faesham named his son Tolgrumm after his
great-great-great-great-grandfather's grandfather, and as his paladin
namesake, taught him to worship Aarn and his precepts.  Foremost of these to
Faesham was dedication: it was dedication that kept the village standing,
dedication that kept the mines producing, dedication that kept boar in the
table.

Also a sign of dedication was the worship that the Hammerhand clan still
offered to Aarn.  It had been Ages, in fact, since their Lord had been seen
or heard, or since his priests in the village showed any true power. 
Paladins had become mere warriors, and healers had turned to salves.  But
Faesham swore by his ancestors, though, that no other god would be served in
his house.  "Fargin' 'ells," he exclaimed, "ye got dedication or not?  What
kind o' gully-dwarf duergar crossbreed turncoat gives up on the god o'
dedication?"

Tolgrumm, like any good dwarf, tried his best to please his gruff father, but
was a frequent target of Faesham's ire.More than once Tolgrumm was caught
at the village tavern, listening to tales of heroes of renown and lands far
away. "Shite, boy, th' tavern ain't got no ore.Where's yer dedication?"  By
the tender age of 30, Tolgrumm had become more productive, but longed for
more than dedication.

Bindle over his shoulder, Tolgrumm Hammerhand started when he turned the
corner and bumped into his father.  "Fargin' 'ells, boy.  Where d'ye think
ye're going?" Faesham questioned. "Yer chores ain't done and yer..." his
father tailed off as he saw the light in his son's eyes.

"So, ye're leavin?" Faesham asked, his voice softer than normal.

Tolgrumm squared his shoulders and tried to meet his father's eyes. "Dat's
right, pa.  Got to make me own name, just like me
great-great-great-great-grandpappy's grandpappy."

Faesham nodded once. "S'pose dat's yer right.  Ye got yer prayers o'
dedication with ye?"

Tolgrumm steeled himself.  This was going to be difficult. "I ain't just
lookin' fer dedication.I'm lookin' for purity."

"FARGIN' 'ELLS!" Faesham's explosion did not disappoint. "By yer mother's
backhair, yer talkin' about that elf wench, ain't ye?"

"SHUT YER TRAP," Tolgrumm snapped, raising his voice to his father for the
first time. "That's a goddess yer callin' wench."

Faesham crossed his arms and glared at his son, but the glare lacked somewhat
in harshness. "Ain't never talked to me like that, son.Can't say I like it,
but at least yer dedicated to something.  Just don't fargin' get yerself
killed." Faesham ducked his head and stomped past his son.

Tolgrumm's voice followed him own the hall. "Ain't plannin' on it.  I'll be
back some day."

Like his namesake, Tolgrumm seeks to be a holy warrior.He has sworn to
follow the Paladin's code as written, though he knows it will not be an easy
road.  His fiery dwarven heritage makes him prone to explosions and foul
language, and his instinct for precious metals makes him occasionally succumb
to greed.

Tolgrumm seeks to improve his compliance with the code.He sees dedication,
unlike his fathers, not as an end in itself but as a means to an end, namely
purity. As ores are smelted carefully to rid them of dross, he likewise
looks for his dedication and trials to rid him of any imperfection.

Deep down, Tolgrumm has some of his father's prejudices, and feels a bit
uneasy about setting out to serve an elf, especially a female.  But he has
heard the tales of Baerinika's followers, of their pursuit of the Light and
of purity, and sees her patronage as the only practical route.

Baerinika nodded with approval at the young dwarf, and he breathed a sigh of
relief.Her next comment, though, cut Tolgrumm to the quick.  

Baerinika says 'Also, I will want you to be able to draw clear differences
between my faith and Aarn's.'

At her words, Tolgrumm's heart felt heavy.  He had already walked away from
his father Faesham and the faith of his ancestors, and his new patroness was
asking him to draw the line even more starkly.

As Tolgrumm left the Jaguar's shrine, however, and uttered his first
subsequent prayer, his eyes flew open and drooping heart lifted.  Though
before his prayers had been answered, he now felt Baerinika's power flow
through him, as present as she had been in the shrine.  In the coming days,
as prayer after prayer was granted, Tolgrumm's bond with his goddess grew,
and she went from being to Tolgrmm "Lady Baerinika" to being "my Lady".As
his bond grew, the pain lessened, and he began to think more about what
separated dedication from purity.

Tolgrumm stood once more before his Goddess, answering the questions she had
posed to him on his reasons for fighting, the sources of his strength and
resolve.  Though he had meditated quite a while in preparation, he felt more
committed as he made his promises to Baerinika.

When Tolgrumm began discussing his faith in his Goddess, and the way it
differed from that of Lord Aarn's followers, he felt none of the previous
sense of betrayal.  The words came easily, being the realization of the truth
his heart had uncovered.

Baerinika nodded at the paladin, and he felt the warmth of her approval as he
left her shrine.  The following days, however, had an even stronger impact on
Tolgrumm.  He began hearing the whispers of other Therans, even those with
whom he had little contact, marking him out as a follower of the Jaguar. 
With the wider knowledge of him as a follower of Baerinika, Tolgrumm felt a
pressing need to follow the Code even more strictly, that he not represent
poorly the priests of his Lady.

Most heavily, perhaps, Tolgrumm began to moderate his speech to enemies. 
Though conversant outside of battle, Tolgrumm's hot dwarven blood made it
easy to slip from fair speech.  

Tolgrumm nodded to Olin.  "Tall an' cold, an' right in front o' me!"  The
day's battle complete, he looked forward to his usual pint or four of dwarven
ale.  Raising the tankard to his lips, he thought of the cold, refreshing
brew, the slight haze and pleasant mood it instilled... and frowned.

Tolgrumm tried to shrug off the odd, nagging feeling in the back of his mind,
and again raised the ale to his lips.  Again he set it back down without
drinking.  Could a priest of Purity really imbibe, muddling his thoughts and
taking away some of his volition?

"Ain't natural," he muttered under his breath.  Surely the Jaguar wouldn't be
asking THIS of him.  Surely he had left his family and their lord, but
drinking?  What was a dwarf without drinking and drinking songs?

Muttering again under his breath, Tolgrumm pushed away from the bar and
stalked off to a table in the corner, discretely pouring his ale into a spare
skin and replacing it with water.  He sighed, tugging at his beard, and began
to scrawl something down on a sheet of parchment.  "Jus' 'cause I ain't
drinkin' ale dere don't mean I can't be singin' drinkin' songs. Er at least,
a drinkin' hymn...."

Tolgrumm strode into his guildhall in Voralian City, and noticed a new
glimmer of respect in the eye of the guildmaster.   "Well done, comrade,"
said Nicolette, gracing the new hero with a smile.

Tolgrumm nodded back, taking a small measure of pride in his new stature. 
Yet he also felt a need for reflection, knowing that his maturity must be
reflected in his purity first and foremost.  His mind drifted back to his
last discussion with his Goddess.

Baerinika says, "I would never dictate your actions.  All I ask is that you
truly think about what purity means to you, define it for yourself, and then
stick to those guidelines."

Tugging at his beard and sinking down into his favored meditation pose,
Tolgrumm thought over the choices he had made:  to abstain from drink; to
refrain from foul speech; to maintain a smaller cache of wealth than most. 
Thinking back to the words inscribed in the book on Baerinika's altar, he
nodded.Perhaps his focus on purity had been too centered on abstaining,
rather than doing -- purity through inaction rather than action.  Perhaps he
should fight more against the taint and more for the souls of the Light. 
Nodding, he stood, mission afresh in his mind.

"Aye den, sir," said Tolgrumm, rendering a salute to Filndar.  The gesture
felt a bit foreign, but not because he hadn't made it before; he hadn't made
it before to anyone but Clahier.  Tolgrumm thought back to one of his
conversations with the beloved Captain. She spoke of her longing to make
known the words of wisdom spoken by the followers of the Jaguar.  "Can you,"
she asked, "help me make sure that even those who do not call on the
Spearmaiden hear them?"

Coming back to himself, Tolgrumm looked at the tattoo on his arm, so similar
to that which graced Clahier's cheek.  "Dat I will," he vowed, but added with
a grumble, "Guess dat means I got ter learn ter write better."

Looking out over the Fortress from the snowy ledge, Tolgrumm Hammerhand
allowed himself an almost undetectable sigh of satisfaction.  The Codex and
Scepter were safely secure in the Altar; the urchins of Voralian had coin to
fill their stomachs; the newly-minted squires seemed to be going about their
duties with earnestness and zeal.  A good day it was.

Perhaps most importantly for Tolgrumm, the long war between the Village and
the Fortress had ended, and no stirrings had arisen in weeks.  He realized
that the war had been perhaps the gravest threat to his Purity that he had
ever faced, but not from evil taking seed within him.  Rather, it came the
feeling of comfort -- even relief? -- that came whenever his own Hunted kin
escaped death at his hands.  Ending the torment of the deranged was one
thing.  But Tolgrumm, whose concept of Purity never allowed him to do
anything half-heartedly and attacked as such, didn't know how he could have
squared himself a whole-hearted killing of another dwarf.

Tolgrumm's faith in Baerinika had been the trail of breadcrumbs (the vein of
ore, has he thought of it) that had kept him grounded in his trial.  Amidst
it all, he had been asked to be Captain, a show of faith in his judgment by
his Goddess that moved Tolgrumm deeply.And he had scarcely ever felt as
close to his Lady as when he asked him to pen the words of peace to the
Village, without hesitation on her part or longing for further retribution.

A good day it was.

Tolgrumm is growing older: his hair has turned white, his tread has slowed
somewhat, and he has felt his muscles robbed of some of their former vigor. 
Yet instead of becoming cantankerous in his old age like many of his kin,
Tolgrumm is noticing more and more being filled with a profound sense of joy.
finds himself more light-hearted in his conversation -- though anything
that offends against Purity can still raise his ire -- and more appreciative
of the Fortress, even those who don't follow his Goddess.

Tolgrumm accounts this joy to his long years of service to the Jaguar and her
generosity to him.  He has more confidence now in the victory of the Light
and a peaceful rest ahead for him when his years of service are done.

In an attempt to help others find the joy he has found, and as the Voice of
the Jaguar, Tolgrumm has turned back to writing.  He has started a series of
scrolls to the Fortress about the virtues of the Light, as interpreted
through his lens of Purity.  He started with the virtues he has been schooled
in by Baerinika (Faith, Fortitude, and Retribution) and now moves toward less
sure footing, starting with Charity.

Tolgrumm seldom had trouble with sound sleep and lacked the vivid dreams of
those inbibing ale.  When he found himself amidst the most compelling of
dreams, then, he was convinced it was a vision from the Light.  He saw a
massive golem, a forging of dwarf-kin, perhaps the most beautifully
constructed thing his eyes had beheld.  Plated in gold and with brilliant
eyes, it seemed a perfect weapon to dispense upon the wicked.

Tolgrumm asked his Lady Baerinika to help discern the meaning of the dream,
and she sent him to find a humble forger of the Light.  Tolgrumm came across
Nikaulta, smithy of Akan, who seemed willing to forge the golem.  She
required of him three things:  a more detailed drawing of the golem, advice
from the arcane of the Fortress on animating it, and a trove of gold to
finance and plate the beast.

Ordinarily Tolgrumm tries to be more meager with his finances, giving to the
urchins of Voralian City and other causes, but his bank account now swells as
he stores up gold for the construct.  In his mind, the golem exhibits a kind
of Purity -- a Purity of forging in its mastery and detail, and Purity of
purpose in its fight against the tainted.  Though this lens, he does not see
it was breaking the code to amass wealth for this purpose.
