Description
Standing a hand over six feet in height, this arial man has a slender build
offset by broad shoulders. The microfeathers covering his face and the
exposed portions of his chest, legs and wings are a shade of radiant cream,
looking much like skin to the untrained eye. The tops of his arms, legs and
tips of his wings are marked by looser feathers of a striking, bright
cerulean. His face is long, marked by a slight hint of a lantern jaw, and
fronted by a small, well-proportioned burnt orange beak. Above his beak, his
eyes stare out from brows marked again by cerulean blue, the orbs yellow
jasper flecked with turquoise. A train of feathers falls back from his brow
to his shoulders, a spectrum of blue transitioning from cerulean to cobalt.
His attire is a strange mix of formality and function. An immaculate gray
suit, the cuffs and hems trimmed in blue, sits over a functional yet collared
white shirt. Strapped to his arms and legs are bats of padding meant to hold
greaves and vambraces of whichever armor he chooses, while a set of
well-cared for goggles of black leather and glass rest on his forehead. A
small buckler sits at the small of his back below the wings, and the mix of
hammer and lash look well used. As to his present condition, you notice
that...

History and development

"To rule the folk you must understand the folk" was one of the earliest
pieces of advice Torzen received from his father. It was also the earliest
point of resentment he could recall. Torzen comes from a noble family, one in
rotation to govern Ayr'Tiril. For the last several generations, each of the
patriarchs of the house had been a wizard of considerable renown, though in
the distant past his for fathers had been great generals and warriors.
To honor this tradition, the young men of his family were schooled in both
the martial and magical arts, and Torzen was no exception. He resented being
told what to do, instructed on which option he should pick every time life
presented a choice. And so while his education was of a dual nature, because
the expectation was for him to become a wizard, he embraced the martial side
of his training. This was much to the dismay of his mage tutor, but he was
not deterred.
After some years it became clear that his interests would not turn to magic,
and he was given family leave to join the guard. In the guard, he found true
passion for commanding a squad of guard known for conducting offensive raids.
Whether against unruly cloud giants, infringing jaettes, or plain orcs, his
men (known rather grandiosely as the Swift Wings) became respected and
feared.
It was during one of his further ranging expeditions that he made it to
Hillcrest and was exposed to gnomish innovation. He took a quick and keen
interest in their machinations with constructs of a non-magical nature, and
became convinced that this was the future of civilized theran society. This
would likely have been a mere quirk of an otherwise regional concern had
Torzen not begun channeling some of his great family wealth to a gnomish
innovator known to eschew magic in his constructs.
Conflict, Evolution
Added Sun Nov 29 13:23:52 2015 at level 20:
Torzen's younger brother, Kalzen, who had followed the traditional path for
their family and become a wizard, was incensed. He had become the heir
apparent to their family due to Torzen's de-facto abdication, and yet the
family name he inherited was (in his opinion) being tarnished by Torzen's
association with a "crazed, lunatic gnome".
He went to confront Torzen one day, in his guard headquarters, and an
argument ensued. The wizard had gone into closed audience in Torzen's office,
and as tempers flared, he had fired off a fireball as a threat, which caught
Torzen offguard. Hearing their officers shout, two of his men burst in and
attempted to restrain Kalzen. But his temper was up and he reacted sharply,
burning them badly. Torzen was incensed, and beat his brother across the face
so severely as to break off his beak and blind him in one eye.
There was no death that day, but Torzen knew he could not maintain his
familial ties and pursue what he wished to pursue. He had come to believe
that the use of magic hindered the progress of civilized Thera, and gave
power to those who did not have proper seasoning to exercise such
responsibility. And so he left, forsook his family name to take up the name
Swiftwing, and looked to combine his love for campaigning with the desire to
abolish the dangerous and stunting force of magic.
About Torzen, His Choices and Mannerisms.
Added Sun Nov 29 13:33:55 2015 at level 20:
Torzen is polite and fastidious, due to his noble birth and upbringing. He
takes great care in his appearance and belongings. Similarly, he has come
from a place of pure wealth, so does not place great significance on items -
should he lose them, they will simply be replaced.
He has developed a love for campaigning and war, and believes them to be a
necessary instrument in advancing Theran society forward. As such he is
intrigued by the god Jormyr, though wisely feels some trepidation about a
child of society following a brutal, elemental force.
He believes the reliance on magic has stunted this progress. Because of this,
and the circumstances estranging him with his family and brother, he has
chosen to fight magic in all its forms.
He does not hate magic or its practitioners, but believes they are selfish
and short-sighted. And such selfishness does incense him to the point that it
can provide fuel for his fires in combat. Should he be granted a place within
the Battleragers, as he desires, he will seek to berserk - though it will
always be more the quiet fury than an explosion of rage.
He does not let law of the land or social constructs hinder him from what he
believes, and as such will do as he sees necessary, when and where he sees
necessary.
Torzen's Growth, Temperment, and Decisions
Added Tue Dec 29 12:21:14 2015 at level 49:
Torzen has matured and gained a weathering from his years of war. A brash,
arrogant arial noble has been tempered by defeat and toil. Goals he has set
for himself, even softly, have not been met: he fancied himself a more deadly
warrior than his results have shown. He believed he could catch the eye of
the lord of War, Jormyr, and that has not yet happened either.
The effects on his choices and demeanor have been subtle but significant.
Though he has always been a man of aggression and offense, when his time to
visit the Macalla came, not once but twice did he make choices of a defensive
nature. His time fighting alongside Varnon left him deeply impressed by the
resilience of the stout dwarf and Torzen, wishing to make a greater impact in
the tides of war, sought the Mountain's Soul because of it. So too did he
hear the Whispers of the Seige to be able to endure the trials of war more
fully.
As to his personality, he has perhaps become a bit more cynical, but not
embittered. Where he expected to spend his life battling magic, he has been
hounded by the Fortress instead. Torzen is somewhat conflicted about these
trials. He still does not believe himself a wicked soul, only one resolved to
do what he must, and yet the paladins and Maran warriors proclaim that the
divine have clearly judged him wicked. He wishes to spend his life warring
magic, not the ideology of light and dark, but where once a stubborn pride
would refuse him any chance to hear their words, the more practical and
weathered Torzen considers if their overtures of "redemption" would end up
serving his war better in the end. So he will continue to mull such, and
fight on as a slightly wiser, much more humble, man of war.
