Role
The Beginning
Added Mon May 7 19:44:28 2012 at level 1:
Dawn came late this particular morning, as the past eves storm hung over the
great Arial City in a commanding display of natures force. Rain fell harder
than Treyliu could remember, lightning flashing so intensely, it was as if
the boundaries between night and day vanished for brief moments, marked by
thunderous booms that echoed deeply from the earth below.
Up to this point, life had been easy. It was only fitting that this young
arial, having become so utterly discontent with the life of luxury found
within the palace walls, was to be setting out for unknown adventures amidst
this downpour that left her feeling young, fragile, and rather terrified.
Something about the storm brought back distant memories, lying in bed as a
child awake with fear over nothing more than night itself and the imaginary
creatures that might lurk beyond the shadows edge. And yet somehow the
intensity of the rain, the danger of the unknown all laid out before her,
left her feeling more alive, more real than ever before.
Treyliu packed a few slices of bread, a torch, a spare cloak and a small
handful of coins into an old sack. She could feel her heart pounding with
excitement. All her life it had seemed that there would be no surprises, no
adventures. Her uncle, brother to the Emperor himself, had raised her to tend
to the treasury. She had forever been surrounded by mountains of gold and
riches, fine foods and elaborate works of art. Strangely, she had come to
feel no sense of value in these things. She lost herself in books, stories of
great heroes and their epic adventures.
She began to sneak out from the palace, wandering the streets of the Arial
City and eventually venturing amongst the hills below. Stealing treasures
from the palace vaults and giving them to the sickly beggars on the streets
brought her great joy. Often she would leave fine weapons and ornate armors
lying in the road, watching from the shadows as others would make the
delightful discovery. She found a sense of thrill in the flowing of power and
wealth from those who had it to those who did not. Stagnation seemed so
pointless and dull, lacking the substance of the great stories of war and
adventure.
And so it was, this early morning in the heart of the storm that her life
would change forever. She listened for the clanking armor of the guards as
they turned down the hall and quickly sneaked out into the wet darkness of the
dawn. The cold rain soaked her feathers as she set out down the empty street.
A bolt of lightning fractured the sky ahead just as she spread her wings and
rose up with the gusting winds. She let out a wild scream and dove beneath
the clouds. For now, her life was truly just beginning...
Becoming a Thief
Added Wed May 16 19:24:47 2012 at level 22:
Treyliu wandered the woods, soaked from the rain, cold and hungry. Her first
days out in the world had been a harsh realization of life outside the palace
walls. No longer were things going to be given to her, no longer was life
going to be easy and luxurious. This was what she had wanted, right? At times
she was no longer so certain. Yet there was an undeniable drive inside her
moving her toward something unknown, dangerous and exciting- something
important and inevitable.
As utter exhaustion was setting in, Treyliu came upon a well-traveled
crossroads. To the south, she could make out the city of Galadon. Hints of
wood smoke and fine meats drifted with the breeze. She made her way to the
city, stomach rumbling and body aching. She had long since run out of bread.
As she reached into her bag for the last of her coins, they were nowhere to
be found. She sat in the shadows of the market- and for a short time she
cried quietly and considered giving up.
As fate would have it, an enormously fat merchant waddled by gnawing on a
turkey leg. He mumbled to himself, drunken and careless, and paid no
attention to the shadows where Treyliu sat resting. As she watched him
tearing ravenously at his food, she heard a very familiar sound- the sound of
gold coins. Without hesitation, without even a thought really, she was on her
way down the road holding a small pouch full of coins and laughing
hysterically.
She ate a pile of meat and seed-cakes that had never tasted so good. As she
was about to lie down in a dark alley, a strange man suddenly approached her
from the shadows. He was draped in a long black cloak. The unmistakable
glimmer of gold caught the light, causing him to sparkle as he stepped
forward.
"My child, you seem lost and alone", he said with a mysterious grin.
She was cautious of any stranger and this man was difficult to read. She had
no intention of being a victim and gripped her dagger tightly. "I'm alright,
just leave me be", she replied.
"I saw your work earlier, my dear", he said with a hiss. "That merchant-
well, you know how to pick 'em! I was about to rob that fat bastard myself."
She wasn't entirely sure what to make of this. Was he after the rest of the
gold? She had nothing else of value. "There comes a time when the wealthy
have too much. That merchant will be just fine", she said nervously.
He laughed. "Oh? I'm quite certain you're right. There are those of us
who...have a certain gift, call it the gift of the hand." He held up a
dirt-stained palm with fingers widespread, closed his hand and opened it
again, now holding her pouch of gold!
She drew her dagger and growled, ready to strike. The man laughed again and
threw her the pouch. "Come with me, child. The thieves' guild of Galadon is
always in need of quick hands, sharp minds, and a pretty face. I'll show you
how to survive- and how to thrive!, said the thief guildmaster of Galadon.
Approaching the Island
Added Tue May 22 19:49:29 2012 at level 26:
Treyliu stood at the edge of the sea and stared out at the distant horizon. A
pale blue line marked the transition from ocean to sky as a gentle breeze
rolled in to meet the waves casting a fine mist of salty water into the air.
She was often drawn to the coastline for relaxation and reflection. This
particular day was sunny and peaceful and perfect for reflecting on life and
pondering the future...
There was something profound about the waves. In many ways they reminded her
of the gusting winds that would swirl around the Arial City. She would watch
the birds play in the breeze for hours- and here she could watch dolphins
surfing in the waves in much the same way, playful and joyous.
Life, it seems, is not all that different from the ocean or the sky. We are
all encompassed by a sort of flowing energy and there is clearly a similar
force behind it all- as storms move, as wealth and power flows, as thoughts
progressed in the mind, even the flowing of a blade in battle and the
movement of a pen on paper. There is a power which is guiding us if we are
attuned to it- something that connects each moment to the next- in a way that
can be harnessed.
role + She thought for a long time on this, until the sunset had painted the sky a
deep shade of purple. It was then she noticed a lone beam of sunlight shining
on a strange island in the distance- and suddenly she knew what she would do.
Her life was to be dedicated to one thing- attuning to the flow of energy,
becoming a vessel in the winds of fate and riding the waves on the seas of
time. It was only at that center point of perfect balance where energy flowed
from strong to weak, from rich to poor, from good to bad, from order to
chaos, where she could be closest to the pure essence of moving energy, where
she could most directly feel it guiding her- and where she could begin to
harness it. She knew not where this would take her, but knew that her own
fate now lay in the essence of the wind and the waves.
Treyliu spread her wings and the breeze immediately lifted her into the air,
seemingly guiding her straight to the Island with no effort at all just as
the sun fell below the horizon.
+ Treyliu's Journal Entry: The gift of the Winds
Added Wed Jun 13 12:34:00 2012 at level 41:
I have noticed a subtle yet strange feeling as of late- it seems as though
I may have a gift. I can sense shifts in the winds, which I have come to
believe are guiding me toward something. Toward what end? I do not know. But I
have reason to suspect the process itself is much more important than the end
point.
Today I decided to test my attunement to the winds. I emptied my mind in
meditation as I was within the Eye of the Storm, and I let the wind flow
through me- through my pen. I have never written a poem before yet this is
what followed:
------------------------------------
I be white knight
And black bloody spikes
With a tattoo
Of the wealthy life
Of Poetry
Like kaleidoscope
Spider webs
Spinning smoke
Swirling whirlwinds
Inside the rings
Of an infinity symbol
Worn as my wings.
------------------------------------
I have heard rumors of the God Fjarn, Lord of the Winds. I've decided to seek
him out for guidance, for worship, and shall bring this poem as a gift
and perhaps as a sign of my connection to the winds.
Treyliu's Journal Entry: Wind Worship
Added Wed Jun 13 12:45:18 2012 at level 41:
After endless searching, I have finally found the temple. Its been a long
journey and my arrival, as it was foretold by the Windgiver, left me with
confidence that I am truly on the right path.
But what does it all mean? Where does my fate lead me? I could have spent my
life at ease, spoiled by wealth. Instead, I have ventured into the unknown,
following these winds that I cannot see nor can barely feel at all. At times
I wonder if Ive simply gone made, yet then there are other moments that I am
certain that I am being guided. Toward what end? I still do not know. And so
perhaps this is I am drawn to the God Fjarn.
Lord Fjarn spoke of many things. I was told that my life would be easy, but
that my choices would lead to great hardships, that I would seek love but
instead find hatred. He encouraged my worship of the winds- and so I will
press on despite the mysteries that remain.
For now, my destiny is obscured. But as the winds are my guide, I will not be
lost. I have felt the energy guiding me in battle- this glimpse is all that I
need to press on- for when fate is guiding me, I feel as though I am
invincible.
Treyliu's Journal Entry: The Love of Fate
Added Wed Jul 18 18:59:22 2012 at level 51:
They call me the Kingpin, the irony of which is not lost- as it seems the
winds would bring me wealth whether I seek it or not. So this is my fate. So
be it. So I would will it. And so it is.
Yet with wealth and notoriety also comes certain costs, it seems.
I often wonder about the aspects of my fate that Lord Fjarn has foretold. As
the time has passed, it has become increasingly clear to me what was meant. I
would have an easy life, but my choices would make it exceedingly difficult.
I would seek love, yet I would find hate...
Just as the winds bring me gold and treasures, friends and great adventures-
the winds also seem to carry all manner of life's beasts to hunt me down-
wyverns and gorillas and lions and nightmares coming from the air itself.
They bring me nearly constant struggles and warfare, enemies that do not
understand the many ways in which our destinies are interwoven and evil
creatures with no honor guiding their souls.
Yet I continue to do all that I can to embrace my fate, with the winds of the
balance as my guide. And I do love the winds just as I love to watch the
ocean waves and the falcons soar in the breeze- and yet so often the return
for my love is cruelness and brutality.
There times I feel that the winds hate me, yet I can only press on and keep a
certain faith. Perhaps I am being tested. Perhaps this is all part of my
destiny. I put myself up against the strongest forces and I trust the winds
to guide my blade- and so often the winds guide my enemies to victory
instead. I know not why things are the way that they are.
Am I not attuned properly? Is my faith not sincere? In my heart I know this
is not the case as I still feel a love for the winds. My faith perseveres. I
embrace my fate. I love my fate with open wings despite the hate and
hardships that it entails. I press on toward my destiny.
Treyliu's Journal Entry: My Destiny
Added Mon Aug 13 18:30:19 2012 at level 51:
These are times of heavy storms, waves of hardships that seem to pass over me
more frequently than ever. The winds have been swirling all around as of
late, as if the world was quickening, becoming more difficult to track my
fate with confidence. The Village grows stronger. And yet somehow the mark of
Lord Fjarn carries me forward, as I know in my heart this to be the way. By
the words of Fjarn: it has been foretold.
I meditate often on my destiny, a vision revealed by the winds. There I stand
alone amidst an endless battlefield, littered with carrion as far as I can
see. The corpses utterly surround me, the aftermath of something so immensely
powerful, beyond comprehension. And I am there in the center of it all, a
lone survivor, for reasons I do not yet understand. Did I cause this? Are
these corpses of my enemies? I feel a sense of terror, but there is also
something strangely peaceful about it.
I wonder, are my friends among the dead? I hope this is not true. Yet I fear
that it is.
As these thoughts weighed heavily upon me, a dwarven voice echoed down from the
heavens. Lord Thror speaks of a test, of a gamble I might make with my own
life. He speaks of even greater hardships ahead.
As if I were unaccustomed to hardships! As if I believed in luck! This is my
fate. It has been foretold. I say, Let the storms come, and with them bring
the winds to guide my wings!
As the Village grows strong, they have beaten me down. It seems for now the
winds guide their victories, but I trust that their time will pass. In time,
air and water shape even the greatest mountains simply through perseverance.
We are no doubt in this together, our fates interwoven as part of something
much larger, something spanning great stretches of time. It seems there is
something important that I am moving toward, that much is evident.
I have only recently come to realize what this may mean-- that which would
cause the great violence that has been foretold as my destiny-- and it
troubles me greatly. For now I only speculate, and I shall not write of it nor
speak of it to any mortal ears. In time I will know if I am right and shall
elaborate further.
Treyliu's Journal Entry: Strange Dreams
Added Thu Sep 20 13:19:46 2012 at level 51:
Two strange dreams have been reoccurring every time I sleep, utterly
impossible to ignore. At first I thought little of them. Yet over time these
dreams have grown more lucid and frequent. I believe they are somehow related
to my destiny.
The first entails a small dragon. I stand amidst the gory battlefield which I
have seen as my destiny, looking out at the landscape of carnage. I feel no
fear or pain, no regrets or concerns, simply a sense of calmness and
curiosity. I kneel down to examine a nearby corpse and can make out no clear
face, as if my eyes were unable to focus properly. Suddenly, a small dragon
crawls from beneath the body, flies into the air, and lands in my hand. At
first I am startled. I stand there as its tail wraps around my arm and I
realize that this this is connected to me in some special way, as I imagine a
conjurer might feel connected with a familiar. I remember my explorations
with Iklahn and I think that perhaps I must somehow pursue that dragon
beneath the Sea. How one becomes worthy of such, I have no idea. But I shall
attempt to find out.
The second dream entails the couriers. I stand within the Rift below the
Island, the couriers flashing in and out of sight chaotically all around me.
I hold a large sack endlessly full of all kinds of mysterious glowing magical
items. And the couriers come to me repeatedly, without end, reaching out as
if they were starving, taking everything I can give as the Veil crackles with
power. I keep handing over these things, one by one, and I sense the Veil
growing thinner than I have ever felt before. And then suddenly the world is
consumed by a bright flash of light. I feel nothing for a brief period and
then I am standing again in the midst of the gory battlefield again, alone.
Sometimes this cycles into the first dream again.
I have spoken about my fate with Lord Fjarn. He hints at further
hardships to come, the many challenges of deciphering the mysteries of one's
fate. A thing to be pursued, actions to be prevented--the end that in
inevitable, or a terrible fate to be avoided?
I have my suspicions and in time I would hope their meaning shall become more
clear. As the winds would have it, so it shall be.
Treyliu's Journal Entry: A Fated Vessel
Added Mon Oct 15 15:35:39 2012 at level 51:
Strange things manifest as it seems my fate has carried me into the midst of
a raging storm. I hear whispered rumors, speculation, and hints of things to
come. Still so much remains a mystery, yet to unfold. I gauge the winds as
they swirl all around me.
I recall a time many years ago when fate led me to aid the Fortress in their
attempts to close a dark portal that had opened near the Outlanders Tree.
Now, nearly a lifetime later, I am approached by a shadowy lich and asked to
steal something of immense importance. This thing- I would expect to greatly
aid in reopening something equally dark and powerful as the portal I had once
helped to close. Such actions are clearly dangerous, for myself and others.
But clearly this is no coincidence. I fear nothing except losing track of the winds.
I continue to see visions of my destiny- a thing to be avoided? A thing that
I might cause by doing something right, or wrong- or failing to do something
I was meant to do? Or perhaps it is simply the inevitable end to my story.
Our collective story.
I find lately that I am different than most of the other Islanders. They seek
to keep the balance as a stable and perpetual state of existence. That
purpose drives them. The focus on the end rather than the process itself. Whereas myself,
I am simply a vessel for the winds. I care not that the world is kept balanced any more
than I favor the Light or the Darkness- but rather I live for the movement,
as it is the imbalance that drives me to realize my fate, that carries me
toward my destiny. Calm winds anymore, and I am lost in this world.
Give me struggle then! Bring the storms!
I will seek out this thing, for if it can be stolen- then I am the one. And
should I hold the thing in my hands, I will look to the winds...and I will
know what to do.
